The Weekender: Superheroes, Kings Of War & Memoir ’44

Video Sponsors: Battle Foam - Warmachine
We're back with another Weekender and it's been very busy with Kings of War Week 2013 and plenty of other goings on over the past two weeks. It's also time to chat superheroes from X-Men and Avengers as well as Knight Models and their expanding range into Middle-Earth and maybe more.
As well as that we have a big thank you for all the support, prizes are on the way and adding to the team slowly but surely. It also wouldn't be a Weekender without a game of the weekend and this time it's Memoir '44!
On top of that you can also win yourself a Plastik Krak Companion Skull! If you're a Backstager you can win one in there too!

Happy weekend!

Swish, a weekender. All I need now is my cherry pepsi max and skittles and I’m sorted. Cheers guys.
I’ve been playing a lot of xcom lately and was wondering if you could modify it to play a kind of xcom board game using Deadzone. You have a grid based game, uber soldiers, a lot of cover, objectives, character progression, and if you chuck in some mars attacks stuff you got aliens.
Deadzone could be a great engine to run it on the tabletop. mmmmm I might have to give that a go!
Reading the rules of deadzone. Looking pretty nice.
I love the Plastikkrak Skull. I can hang that over my painting table.
Skulls for my Skull Queen!
I could be wrong but is it the Ghostbusters phone number???
BINGO! 😉
Pulp City is not grid based, it is a proper miniature game. I’m not that interested in superheroes, but I have read the rules and they are quite good.
pulp city is great but they are just working on revamping the rules and they are planning a Kickstarter. the batman game is quite good but the rules are hard to read.
secong the deadzone ruleset it would work with a hero game.
I almost thought you were having an early chistmas episode, the setting just have that feel.
Then again fall is also a great season for sitting indoors, enjoying a good boardgame, while listening to the wind and rain outside.
My first thought, when I saw the Infinity marine officer, was Bridge Bunny.
It is quite nice to see models and missions with non-combatants .
As much as I like Knight models and their Batman game, I really hope they will release something besides that very narrow view of the universe, Gotham have quite a lot of heroes come in and out of it and personally I find most of them a lot more interesting than Batman himself.
I would love to see some more named characters for GCPD and I would kill for the chance to play with the birds of prey (I prefer the original team, but the new 52 could work as well), And generally lets see someone with actual superpowers and/or flavor (They are on the right track with Poison Ivy and the real Bane)
Oh, and as a quick note.
There should be no problem in making rules for the Watchmen and using them with the batman game rules, sure they don’t fit with the other models, (they’re DC but not in the sane universe, so to speak) but you could easily make them fight the police or common thugs from the existing range
Welcome back fellas.
Love the look of the Memoir ’44. I need to get some games that don’t require months of painting time.
you have to watch Gravity in 3D
Ordered Deadzone from my local shop yesterday as it happens, hoping it arrives for christmas.
Great vid guys, thanks a lot.
I’m collecting mine from the open day. Can’t wait to see the size of the box, let alone its contents.
ahhh ’44 I just went to steam and downloaded it 😀
I think Ive been to that beach before…..
Great weekender guys, I might have to come over and do one with you 😉
There is a space on the sofa waiting for you mate 🙂
Supersystem is a good (and cheap) rules set for superhero skirmishes and there are (community created, I think) stats out there for the Marvel and DC roster. But I’m hoping that the new version of Pulp City will re-establish itself as THE super hero minis game once the new edition comes along. You guys should totally have a chat with them once their KS goes live 😉
lemme win that scull please
You should make a weekly competition out of that comment of the week I reckon there could be some really good ones 🙂
Also I would love to paint up that skull it looks awesome.
I absolutely loved the way Warren got fired up by Pegasus Bridge! History is ff’in awesome!
Great episode as always guys 😉
Games that draw non gamers into the hobby perhaps we should start up a directory ?
X Wing certainly should be included.
Memoir 44 is the World War 2 version of the fantasy board game of Battle Lore, or so it seems.
Another great show thanks gents 😀
Keep up the good work guys:)
Sweet show. Weekends are ****ends without a Weekender in ‘um. I’m N.Ireland based, do you know where I can find out more about local games clubs? I’m a bit too old to even think about a GW store. My friends are absolutely non-gamers, though the Knight Models Batman or maybe X-Wing are probably my best chance of getting them involved.
Cheers
Congrats guys, imo you’re back on track. This was the first time I felt like getting a cuppa, best atmosphere there for listening to some chat about gaming ‘n movies and other stuff.
Now I’m looking foreward to the next weekender again wondering where you will be chatting next time.
Loved the original XCom back in the 90s, and loved playing the reboot last year, so really looking forward to the expansion, and as for a tabletop version…..well……. I’m in!! 😀
Memoir ’44 is such an awesome game 😀
Warren get and old psone and buy x-com enemy unknown. Its the best version it came out back in the day and in my opinion is better than the new one which has been abit dumbed down, its not as shiny as the new one tho. They also did another one which i think was terror from the deep ! But don’t quote me, but was’nt as good as first as it had too many levels i.e. Four up and four down but i digress please please please check it out warren your’ll love it
why not just get it on steam and run it on a PC 😀
It is a benchmark game it came out on the Amiga as UFO enemy unknown (I think it is still listed as that in the UK)… reminded me of the AMAZING Gerry Anderson show.
I need these in my life… they look sweet!
I like the plans for the future. Looking forward to it.
Hi there,
a X-Wing audio console with the nice sounds of laser blasting and exploding star ships would be great.
I will drink the blood of my foes from the skull. Wait… Wrong army..
Great vid guys, That “skull with servo’s” (lol) looks great, Be interesting to see what Plastik Krak comes up with in the future.
Looking forward to XLBS tomorrow, I want to know what’s in that box.
i have been playing super system for years great and simple to play. We use a GM and it works well.I am waiting for pulp city’s kickstarter to see how that works.I am a biggg fan of super hero games, including ‘clix which i sometime use for super system
That not servo skull is very cool looking and I just love there company name
KOW week has introduced me to BOW. I like the website a lot and shall we watching these in the future.
Great weekender as usual 🙂 another great intro game is axis and allies which i think is the second world at the time of 1945 which i play with my kids, also you can’t forget RISK ! These are my favs and the kids love it too my youngest started playing them at six ! And as a family we try to play a boardgame every friday which keeps us all laughing and is important as a bonding mission ! As my eldest is about to turn 13 and is constantly plugged in to some electrical device or other ! !
That skull is just crying out for some LED’s and such. Very cool!!!
I kind of like the round the coffee table feel of this week’s video. It’s a little more personable than the studio.
I have to agree, something rather chilled out and relaxing about it. 🙂
Good to have the weekender back and like the look of the Memoir 44 game as well. Will have to look up Battle Lore as was mentioned in te comments if it uses similar concepts as I think my 10yo son likely to be more interested in the fantasy aspects.
Also on tha ambient background stuff there were a couple of Kickstarters recently for quite fantasy based dungeon delving type stuff and forests etc so definitely scope there I think, dripping water, creaking doors, drums, drums in the deep;) . On the sci fi front would like to hear some city background noise, like hover cars going by, choppers, interspersed with laser and gunshot fire etc for some infinity inspired fire fights as well as things like mechanised movement like the merchant the end of Robocop. Just my brain dump!
That skull is quite delicious.
The superhero games that were being pitched sounds like it’d work better as an RPG.
This looks much nicer than your regular studio.
So glad to hear all of this on the weekender and I’m glad to see someone else sitting in front of a fire
Loving the skull, not sure on its uses but its really cool looking. Can’t wait to see what people do with them!
I know Magic the Gathering was touched on previously, would love to see a little bit of a blast on that see how people find starting that.
So THAT’S where my bluray collection went!
it is propaply written allready. but to those who are 38+ and propably still remember Amiga 500 and 1200+ back in the early 90’s. those of us remember far well the turn based strategy UFO enemy unknow. the same game that waren are talking about . it is just godt a face lift like the game Syndicate. so i remember the both games. the one in the 90’s and now 😀
Greta show as always. I like the fireside chat feel!
Warren – Deadzone will have an AI component to it with a deck that controls the enemy. I wonder if that system might work for your superhero game idea?
http://youtu.be/pkGBDzu2ggk?t=7m57s <- I think the major flaw of something like XCOM as a tabletop substitute is it's not social — it might have scratched that strategy itch for a while, but it's a solitary experience. You might have been safe!

Watched this whilst painting this morning. Good start to the weekend.
When I saw this I thought ‘BoW Breakfast TV’. The skull is unusual but frankly I would rather spend the dosh on figures, terrain, paint, the sort of stuff that actually gets used on the battlefield.
I have played video-games though all on PC rather than consoles. I liked Combat Flight Simulator, especially the Fat Cars mission – 3 Luftwaffe fighters versus 18 B17’s… you want to hear that racket when you plunge through their formation and there are the best part of 200 .50cals trying to know you out of the sky!
Strongly recommend the original 90s U.F.O – Enemy Unknown PC game. It is awesome !
The Fireaxis remake is a watered down and more casual interpretation of what was once a deep, remorseless and tense game concept. I do not doubt you will love it.
Marvels SHIELD (for some Marvel 90210) Is mediocre…. at best. With shows around like Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Sons of Anarchy, Luther, Justified, Misfits, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Banshee and if you want a DC/Marvel Superhero show, check out Arrow. and there is Anime godness like Attack on Titan as well. Simply too much good stuff to prefer before SHIELD.
I am afraid I have to correct you guys. Kight Models made Star Wars stuff, but they lost the license. I guess George was charging a bit to much for it. I really hope they con get the license back from Disney because I never got the chance to get mie a few of this outstanding models. Chewie was simply amazing!
A box of goodies from Wild West Exodus… You certainly do know how to end with a bombshell cliffhanger! 🙂 Can’t wait for tomorrow’s show. Good to see you settling in your new environment.
About time Inheritance got some love 🙂
I would like to see Marvel Legendary as game of weekend. Been on my wishlist for a while (Mantic kickstarters keep taking my money) and seems to fit in, albeit without minis, to the AI deck controlled co-op game Warren was describing. The expansions are meant to be excellent and increase the difficulty greatly.
Agree with the others that have posted, and said to a friend earlier this week, that the Deadzone (or Mars Attacks) system should be able to work in a superhero setting. The Mars Attacks scenery and smashed cars etc would be fantastic for this
I always love watching this show. Lots of great info
Skulls for the easy chair, Beer for the Beer god !!
For the love of all that is good in the world, do a Dreadball sound console…. if you don’t I will!
I would love to have an ambiance sound for Lovecraft horror games, Hostile environments (like sinister jungle, winds, space), or Battlefield past to future wars (distant artillery or gunfire)
Now that would be awesome.
Memoir 44 looks fun
Another great weekender guys. We’re you aware that Memoir44 is part of a whole family of games by Richard Borg, basically using the same rule system. Command and Colours Ancients, Battlelore, command and colors Napoleonics, battles of westerose, battle cry, an A C W game and the latest with a collaboration with Zvezda, samurai age of battles.
Woohoo. Fame at last. 😉
lol
( And just to make sure. I have to say – My tongue was firmly in cheek when I typed that post. )
Also. I have to add my support for the original Xcom. I hade a distinct love/hate relationship with that game.
I still remember the time I accidentaly sent the wrong Skyranger on a capture landed UFO mission. It only had 2 blaster launcher weapon platforms on it. Wasted the entire level without even moving. lol
And bloody psychic attacks. Grrr. I had one guy. Boris Mansky – I had to keep his weapon in his backpack because he was ‘that’ prone to mind control. lol
@warzan so in Nottingham at the end of November eh ……. fits nicely with the Open Day of a certain company in that City. Maybe I’ll get a chance to buy that beer I promised way back at International Tabletop day after the epic games of Citadels.
You know was just pondering an idea based on what Warren was sharing about games that are good for drawing non gamers into the hobby.
Or maybe a better term would be “Gateway Games”
Would it not be cool to showcase games that have the ability to do this as they surface???
Well if this idea is somewhat well received, my choice would be Descent 2nd edition with the expansions, Bottom line is obvious, there is no better pathway to D&D and pathfinder.
I don’t know seems like a really cool idea to take notice of those games that do pull this off.
To create a buzz about it might get more game makers on board to creating more games, with this concept in mind. Which could be a everyone wins situation.
I would love to get that skull to paint up.
great show!
the skull would scare the c*** out of my cat!
I would love to see more coming out from Knight Miniatures.
Would be a great project to paint that skull. And a good way to piss off the wife for a bit…lol. I can hear it now..” That thing is not living there!”, no matter where it went…lol
I play video games now and then but not a huge video gamer. Video game coverage may be interesting but I hope it doesn’t result in diluting the true game content on Beasts of War.
Memoir’44 looks really good, I have wanted to try that for months now.
I really look forward to your gaming club coverage.
I was wondering if Beasts of War is planning on covering Roleplay games at all? Shadowrun 5th Ed has just been released and barely a mention.
The guys really needed smoking jackets and pipes.
Servo Skull looks really nice
That skull looks amazing!
That skull looks really cool.
Thought Memoir: 44 look really cool.
Where were the Plastik Krak guys when Inquisitor was still alive? I would like to see them resurrect the 54mm miniature range for that game. I have a few of the GW models and they were a lot of fun to paint.
Dire Foes looks amazing. I’ll probably get all boxes eventually, even if I don’t play the represented factions. I actually like the civvies the most. And I hope Angel Giraldez will put up a painting guide for the Marine Officer. I’m very curious to know how to create the subtle blend on her stockings.
Looking forward to watching XLBS over dinner tonight. I’m curious to know what’s in the box from WWE.
54mm isnt imposs.
Ill have a chat with Brian to see if he would do some cross over. No promises though.
He does 54mm WW2 and is one of those VERY particular sculptors where the webbing has to be right for that year etc.
Thanks though to you guys for the great response to the Companion.
Trev
How soon before we know where the club is?
I like this ‘studio’ setting the best of all of them. 🙂
You guys at beasts of war should do more videos about warhammer 40k.
Eisenhorn cosplay 😀
I am a pretty big Heroclix fan. It seems so simple at first but when you really start to play it, it gets VERY strategic. I was surprised at how much depth there is to the game and how competitive it can be.
The miniatures may not be as cool as pro painted stuff, but for a comic book fan, they can be pretty cool. I have kind of noticed that newer sets the sculpts are actually a lot better, but the paint is much more flat, almost cartoon cel shaded. Whereas if you look at some older sets the sculpts are not near as good but the paint almost seems to have a wash over it, which gives it more depth.
Could always paint over your new miniatures though if you want them to look better!
Getting the Heroclix figures you want isn’t a problem with the availability of them on the secondary market. Between Ebay and the shops that sell individual figures it can even be cheaper than buying booster packs.
Consoles: I would love to have a fantasy mass battle app, with clashing swords, magic bolts and dying monsters.
XCOM: I loved Enemy Unknown, but don’t know if this expansion’s going to be £20 worth.
I love Trevor’s work and would love to own a companion skull!
Hi Dave 🙂
Havent heard from you and Joel for a while.
Hows life with you?
Yeh the skull sat on the shelf for some time.
Got lots in the pipeline that should make the hobby interesting soon 🙂
Hows your titan I sculpted up for you?
Mail me and lets chat bud
Servo Skull and Memoir ’44 look so cool, not 100% fan of the Knight stuff, sorry.
I tried wrinting a comment on this video on youtube but google have done such an idiotic, insane, change to it that sent me into a neverending loop of signing in that by the time I’ve given up, I’ve forgotten what the comment was.
So instead, I’ll just post that rant.
Great weekender. Please, just an ambience app that works on ipad would be great.
nice to see you guys back settled down sunday night to watch this (busy life at the moment!) and thouroughly enjoyed my dose of hobby…also my partner will laugh her head off at a site called plastikk krak it’s what she calls my models!
I’ll take one robotic/cyber skull please ;D ..
Love the show. Not sure about S.H.E.I.L.D myself. BUT .. ARROW season 2 is just amazing IMO. Keep up the great work.
Memoir ’44 is a great game. My 6 year old nephew and my dad play this when ever he comes over and my nephew is getting pretty good at it.
That skull is something my son would love. Daddy can paint it up 🙂
good show guys, nice to hear you have the fire still burning 🙂
Love the game. WW2 games are always good value for first games. People have the ability to relate to what’s being played. Not too keep on the computer games coverage, but games such as the World of Tanks/Planes and soon Ships will be an interesting take…..
Sat down to watch Iron man 3, thought it was really cool then man of steel blew it out of the water. Sat down to watch Thor saw the Captain America trailer thought this is awesome then I saw the X men trailer and that’s all I could think of. It would seem the only thing left to me to fly the Marvel Cinematic Universe flag unsullied by other overshadowing forces is . . . Guardians of the Galaxy. It could be cool. Here’s hoping.
that servo skull idea is very cool, would fit in great for my games of dark heresy
Memoir ’44 is a rad game! Played it with a friend of mine a while back. It’s great for getting a quick game in. In less than two hours two people can easily take a turn playing each side. Really fun game, in fact it’s going on the top of the Christmas list!
We’re lucky Warren didn’t know about UFO (old X-COM) game back in ’94. We wouldn’t have BoF and I’d never get into tabletop gaming 🙂
Great you’re back guys!
btw – what’s the deal with the skull?
That skull is a beautiful piece of art. Truly awesome
Good show mates.
+1 comment for the Emprah!
Welcome back Weekender, and nice to see you are all warm a toasty.
just took a look at knight models pure awesome.
That skull is awesome sauce 😀
i would really love a sound effects board for warhammer fantasy or KOW sounds of marching and really big battles. also i cant wait for avp to come out really want romainto get his hands on some of those pred models
I’ll never get tired of skulls
Woop. Xcom Rules!
Painting my miniatures while listening to this weekender – what a nice way to spend a lazy Sunday 🙂
On Saturday mornings while we sit down for a breakfast ahead of doing the honey-do list I get a chance to watch the Weekender on the main TV. (gotta love the YouTube plugin for XBMC) This week was very special, while your show was on the lady of the house opened up her computer and started to clickity clack through the internets. My thought was she was bored and was into a rabbit hole of her own making, I was wrong, boy howdy I was wrong. We love playing tabletop games and usually we look for things that are co-op or can be played with two players. Memoir ’44 may be the next game in our cabinet! With the holidays around the corner I am hoping that Memoir and Formula D end up in the haul. Thank you for putting a game that will be fun and may be a gateway to a little Bolt Action.
