It still looks foggy to me. Though that might be the eye infection….
Excellent chat as always guys.
While you’re hitting things with hammers, I’m getting a weird bleep on sound every ten minutes or so.
Live rounds…. I still feel that an edited game would be better. It gives the players an opportunity to think, check rules, go to the loo and so forth, all of which can be edited out. Meanwhile some commentary or rules explanations could be edited in. I think you’d end up with a long, but well paced event.
and…. tabletop nation events. The map is really good….. if you’re coming by plane or train – duh! I like the idea of a gaming weekend or ‘holiday’ and would suggest that you also feature local good/reasonable places to stay for 2 or 3 nights. Maybe you could then develop the weekend break idea into a package of different games, mostly from a starter perspective.
the bloop is because the chat function is on this page, so as you are watching the vid, if anyone in the lobby is chatting you will get the bloop.
great vid
OK Stu w may have a major malfunction…
I was at the LGS last nite and had a go around w/ the GW fan boys concerning inspiration of new faction.
If you are a 40k fan boy, I am ok with that but at the sametime we need to be fair concerning other releases that are outside of the grim dark.
Necrons are pulled from this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbtlPCbhVGw
The new warmahordes faction feels like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiAHktEN6aM
I feel that everything is inspired from something, its not who done it first but who does it better…
I honestly dont see the necron connection
I’d describe myself as a hobby fanboy rather than any one system, but to ignore the huge impact Games Workshop has made is doing the hobby a disservice.
An army where the souls of a flesh and blood group are placed into machine bodies is fairly similar to Necrons (and Cybermen for that matter which I really got a vibe of with their faction logo). I also usually see Necron parallels with any army that is almost entirely painted with silver (and I include Grey Knights and Iron warriors with this connection too).
I too get the Terminator vibe when I see Necrons, but then I get a Matrix vibe when I see Terminator Salvation so go figure!
I guess my point (almost lost amongst my ramblings) is that I agree that inspiration is drawn from many areas but in such a small creative pool as wargaming (compared to the rest of human creativity) it is likely that such an obvious parallel is going to be drawn.
If you can’t see any connection to Necrons at all, I am somewhat surprised!
I see it maybe a lil bit however I can’t let that get in the way of some solid debate 🙂
I have to confess that at the end of the matter I am more concerned with the hobby as a whole rather than just one game maker vs. another.
I play both games, and saying this- it is also note worthy to mention that I have my oldest son playing warmahordes and malifaux. With my youngest one looking on waiting for his day in the sun.
We are off to the LGS doing zombies and running my trollbloods today maybe blood angels they are a bit dusty atm
Maybe its strange that I actually draw connection of Phyrexia from MtG (expesially onces from Invasion block) rather than Necrons. Still I can’t believe how I missed whole connection to Cybermen that are so classic in sense of putting creatures of flesh and blood to metal bodies.
No, I see the Phyrexian connection as well. That may be less surprising when you consider Matt Wilson, owner of PP was the art director for MtG for a few years until the end of the onslaught block. Whatever parts of phyrexia cryx didn’t take, Cyriss seems to have salvaged.
Yeah, but the one thing you’re focusing on, the part about putting people in metal bodies, is not even remotely unique to Necrons (or original to them). The Necrons are defined by their tragic history and the aesthetic of the units more than just the “souls in metal bodies” part. The visual aesthetic of the Necrons is very similar to a sort of scifi undead feel (with heavy doses of Terminator).
I think when you look at the aesthetic for the new WM faction you see a lot of influences from the early 20th century (Bauhaus modernism, Italian Futurism, early constructivism), but the faces are mostly reminiscent of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (which, due to a recent rerelease has gotten a lot of attention in the last couple years). There aren’t mechanical skeletons running around here or units that look like scarabs (which are also symbols of death).
The WM faction appears to be less about being cursed to metal bodies than it is about being uplifted into them (at least from the perspective of the faction itself). The Necrons however are clearly enslaved and have given up life. They made a deal with powers that ended up controlling them, and their aesthetic reflects that sense of mindless undeath.
Now maybe, the new WM faction’s back story will end up being darker too, but from what we’ve seen so far, I’d say they have very little in common with Necrons. I’m not saying that as a knock against GW or an attempt to minimize their impact. I just don’t think it looks like Necrons were a major influence behind this faction. I think by focusing on the one thing these two factions have in common (people in metal bodies), you’ve minimized all of the things they don’t (seemingly everything else).
I don’t disagree that once more is known about them there will be a huge number of differences. If I gave the impression that I thought they were just Necrons for Warmachine then I need to check Warren’s new cameras for more issues as that’s not my intent at all!
That said, to your average uninitiated gamer, their first reaction is likely to be “Wow cool, robots. A bit like Necrons in 40k” Once you explain things I’m sure there are myriad contrasts between them. Doesn’t stop it being the most likely wargaming comparison though.
Of course once we dig up Fritz Lang I’m sure that a Metropolis Kickstarter is just round the corner and there’ll be another wargaming point of reference… Hang on, that actually sounds pretty cool!
Nice vid.
I think the new warmachine faction is very clever to be honest, price rises and the rest have certainly seen a rise in dissatisfaction with GW , even from my small circle of experience, having a faction with even a semblance of familiarity for people looking to see whats there outside of the 40k bubble is top notch marketing, For me, I liked the troops, not so fond of the big stuff.
I think the thing that irks me most about the change in GW stores is the hypocrisy of it. I havent been in one in more than a decade, so it certainly doesnt effect me, but GW spent years putting every independent they could out of business in the UK, I saw it first hand when they opened a shop within sight of the front door of my local hobby shop, then proceeded to mess around on his deliveries and discounts and having major offers in the GW store until it wasnt viable for him to continue. That wasnt isolated, it happened all over the country.
Now, after being directly responsible for the dearth of alternative venues, its inconvenient for them. recently independents are gaining traction again, so it isnt as bad as it could have been for sure, but given what this company actually did in the past, no, I wont give them any leeway on this one, its a crappy move, to alleviate a problem thats of their own making.(/endrant)
loving the weekenders.
While there is no denying the Necrons came first (Jan 1998 IIRC), the concept for the Cyriss force – both in terms of motivation and aesthetic, started development back in 2001 in the original Witchfire trilogy where they were described as a secretive cult who sought enlightenment and ultimately perfection in the form of mechanical bodies that would bring them closer to their machine goddess. Consider one of the miniatures privateer press released to support the WFT line and you can already see where they were heading:
http://privateerpress.com/iron-kingdoms/miniatures/tomb-maiden
So.. is it a coincidence that 40k and WM both have mechanical robo-factions? Probably not. PP are pretty canny like that. But it’s a faction that has existed for 10 years and it was only a matter of time before they had a range of miniatures to support them.
I love the fact that your sound is way better now, not sure if you were wearing mikes before but I definitely seen them this episode. I used to have to crank the volume and then when the graphics came up with their sound it would deafen me. great job on videos and gotta say I love the cheese hunters videos. I still hope you will do a grey knight or tau video. lol.
@stuart is there an age range for these events such as 18 and up???7
14+ is the recommended age limit.
Is there any sketches of the new Rhulic Collosal? I’m looking forward to some Farrow updates but really can’t find any valuable source for that.If someone could please PM me link for some site with the Warmachine and Hordes annoucements?
Nothing was given away about the Rhulic collosals sadly even in the Q+A at TempleCon. They did say the Convergence of Cyriss faction book would have a Collosals straight off the bat. So that faction book will be epic with new toys and fluff
LIVE ROUNDS!!! yes that is most definitely the funnest segment I’ve seen so far on the site. 40K is just so fun to watch!
BTW Warren you talk too much, you cut in and interrupt too much….watch for yourself. Just a friendly FYI.
Sorry guys, I really didn’t get on with video tbh. The vibe was good to start with, regarding Warrens hobby etc. But then Stuarts clipboard of doom containing GW are great ramblings is starting to get a tad boring imho. It seems most videos he is containing the same drivel. please make it stop as the videos seem to be getting more about TTN than BoW. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the need to advertise your events (which appear very good), but can’t you do so in your own little Stuart channel please? as I am sure a lot of people don’t live anywhere near you, so won’t be able to attend no matter how good they sound.
Please please please, more of the original BoW stuff and perhaps advert videos for those that feel willing to attend.
Anyone else notice how Justin is looking more like Ming the Merciless these days? Now there is one guy seriously into his Sci-Fi. hehe (no offence Justin, I have a goaty, just without the tash bit and I have hair too) 😀
Hmm… a clipboard of doom eh…, I guess I’ll need to come up with some new drivel!
My background is over twelve years working for Games Workshop in a variety of roles and so my affection for the people that make up that company sometimes leads my conversation whenever we talk about it on shows like the Weekender. That said I’ve been on a Dystopian Wars and a Warmachine Battlefield Autopsy and didn’t get my clipboard out once!
Tabletop Nation is an integral part of Beasts of War and you will find more of it, not less in upcoming videos. But that’s not something to be worried about, rather its a great opportunity as it gives Beasts of war a real venue to have their Battlefield Autopsies, a real venue to play games in and chat to regular gamers like yourself and a real venue to witness the excitement that an event can generate.
I realise that for some people the events at TTN are less relevant, but I am intending to make the event resources from most of our weekends available to the global community so that if you aren’t able to get down here you can still have fun with what we produce.
That said, I used to travel frequently to Warhammer World for a gaming weekend with no real issue and think you’ll find that many gamers in the UK would be willing to put the travel in if the event was of interest to them. The only way they will know that is if we tell them about it. We have been fortunate to have people fly in from the States and Australia to some of our events and I suspect that will continue as our quality improves.
So I apologise if you find my contributions boring or pointless. I’ll try harder to make my comments more wide ranging – although to be fair we have had GW as a topic of conversation for the last few Weekenders and I didn’t start those topics!
Don’t get me wrong Stuart, I understand what you represent and I have no real issue with that. Having the resources available to all, is very much a positive action that has came from TTN and I would like to thank you for that. My only issue was that if you are to advertise for approx 50% of the video, would it not be better to start a new video that would solely be for this purpose? When I refer to drivel/boring I was regarding this to my own view point. Many apologies if this did not come across. I do believe you are a good presenter in your field and your communication skills prove this. I just don’t want to sit though 20 mins of content that will never have an impact on none traveling gamers, as it feels like a huge commercial break tbh (not a personal attack, more a content attack, hehe).
Your opinions are very much appreciated whether GW or otherwise and I understand the EX-GW community is very tight. But as a customer, some of the reasons/excuses from GW managers etc is laughable at times (especially with the silly smirk on their face) and leads to a lack of confidence in the expertise. This I strongly believe, is due to them not listening to their customers and forcing a lot of nonsense onto their customer base.
On a whole, I would agree with your statements with regards to GW employees and their helpfulness, However, I have witnessed an employee in the Truro branch set light to a customers hair whilst horse playing with an aerosol can and a lighter!! In the same branch, their long term Saturday temp forced children to stand out in the rain because he noticed them talking about Magic the Gathering, the same Sat temp refused to sell a model to a child (that he was saving up for with his pocket money) and forced him to buy something else that was “more suited to his army”. I understand that these actions may be not be in accordance to the GW practise, but I feel some of the GW staff (NOT ALL) believe they hold a position of power over their customers rather than a position of helpful service. As an Army Veteran myself, I have had the privilege to attend a few GW’s in my time, so I understand that they are not all like this and I would like to think setting light to customers is an isolated incident, despite the buff that flamethrowers have had this edition, hehe.
Anyway, I’m drivelling on a bit now, so sorry ’bout that and sorry if I came across a bit strong in my last. Maybe a few things should have been tweaked a bit first (see what I did there Warren, just for you, hehe)
Your comments regarding GW staff behaviour like that gets me steaming. If I had caught a staff member acting in such a way they would have been facing prompt disciplinary action. No question.
agreed Stuart. Shortly after this he had a mystery customer and he got the sack from as he scored about 30% he told me! The temp worked there long after these issues though, but as a temp he was still the most experienced as they constantly had a large staff turnover. Missed Tim from Plymouth though. He was a real boost to the place imho and VERY professional and you could discuss issues with him without in an honest fashion. Long live Timmy and his huge dangly goaty. 😀
Heh, showing my age here but.. it does make me miss Truro Micro 😉
hehe, aye was kinda small. Liked the Ex-navy manager called Jim. Missed going in on my week off and drinking coffee all day whilst painting and chewing the fat. Felt a bit sorry for the truro branch as hardly anyone outside of the vets knows it is there, or have to rely on cornish transport which is scarce to say the least, so many don’t bother. Which is a big shame imho.
When were you there?
Oh, many, many moons ago. It was still called Truro Micro (and still being run by Barry and Joyce) when I frequented the place to get my fix of Amiga games, Warhammer minis, non-GW RPGs and the Doomtrooper CCG 😉
I left Cornwall to go to uni in Plymouth about the time GW took over, so I only visited the place on a couple of occasions when I came home to visit my parents 😉
Miss my Amiga!! it even had a “Hard Drive”!! hehe.
I’d been looking for something to catch my eye that would spark my interest Warmachine, and this new faction is it – an army of awesomely sculpted robots! Just as I like Necrons because they’re influenced by The Terminator, I like these too. Maybe their fluff is similar to the Necrons, I don’t know, but they look fantastic!
Anyone who decides to create an army of robots/cyborgs/soul controlled androids is going to find comparisons with their movie/book equivalents; it’s inevitable. No idea is wholly original because something that exists before it is going to influence it.
The point is whether you enjoy what’s written about them and how they look, and for gamers, it’s about whether or not they have fun and interesting rules that bring something new to the game; that’s what matters most.
So just enjoy them for what they are.
Regarding @stuart‘s contribution to the show, I think it’s cool to hear what an ex-GW guy has to say; like with hearing about Alessio Cavatore, Rick Priestly and Ronnie Renton’s thoughts and talking about their new endeavours. And since TTN is still new, I think it’s fair to expect to hear a lot about it early in the year. True, some people might not be able to travel to it (for myself I’d have to travel 2 hours on the train), but then again those same people might not be able to travel to other venues but they still get advertised anyway for those who can. Even though it was a large portion of the show I still enjoyed what they had to say about it. Something they said that rang true and that is, if there isn’t a local club to go to, start one yourself – although for myself, the only gamers I know are the people on youtube and here, so that would be tricky for me to do! I think for places like TTN it’s best to use it as a place to go to for a day or weekend out, then you can spend time before going to it to work on your armies.
Btw @warzan and @stuart do you remember the episode of Rent-A-Ghost when they all got shrunken down and were driving around in a toy car? That’s all I can remember of that episode; probably ‘cos it was a toy car and I was mad about cars when I was a kid – still am lol. 😀
