Finally, was missing my backstage fix 😀
Nice to have you back guys, you were sorely missed!
And did anyone else notice the box fart at 22:58 im still laughing 😀
Thanks, that was worth going back to see.
Happy Sunday >-:)-< welcome back guys
Great show, thanks guys!
I appreciate you telling about the situation and the future plans, I agree with your decision 100%.
While I can’t speak for anyone else, I was just trying to assure you that there is an audience for other games as well.
Can I just say, I loved the more relaxed feel of these two episodes. I like the out and about vids, seeing as your about to hit winter I suspect they’ll become limited but in the case of The Weekender/XLBS I hope they continue in one form or another
Happy Sunday guys. Thanks for getting the show out bright and early, lovely relaxed atmosphere to this weekends show.
Warren, I think you may take pleasure in a blood o kittens article. It looks like the top Pitbull at GW Legal has moved on. Many questions here, but her Linked-in ?application/notice for work is a very good read. Maybe some good may come of this with GW.
Here is the link
http://bloodofkittens.com/blog/2013/10/09/network-news-gw-fired/
Great video guys and well put together. I can see how much this situation has hurt you Warren and I can completely understand. I think we can all take a leaf out of Beasts of War book and continue to not only support our great hobby but also in supporting you all.
Great location guys, I would like to see more of your fantastic countryside.
Good to have you back guys. Hope your going to do Warhammer as well as 40K.
If they have sacked their current legal pitbull I hope it’s not because she was too soft 😉
Happy Sunday!
What a gigantically beautiful spot to film your weekender show. I think you’re totally right not to leave out all those players who love their Warhammer or Warhammer 40k Miniatures and the games. Diving more into painting over the last 3 years, I decided to paint my armies up and finish some of my scratch build projects. So I’m excited to see some 40k content in the future, even if I mostly play Warmachine nowadays 😉
Another great show guys, really put a smile on my face,
and I agree with what warren said at the beginning 100%, hearing this really helps reinforce my passion for the hobby, so keep the content coming guys and good luck with all your future plans.
I’m liking the new on set location, but to quote Game of Thrones “Winter is coming” and I don’t know if the great out doors will be suitable in,say 2 months. Justin may have to put on a few pounds for winter. 🙂
As far as gamer elitism goes, I can see where you’re coming from, especially as GW’s getting so many established gamers’ backs up. OK GW have been doing this for a long time (I’m old enough to remember them removing other companies’ stuff from White Dwarf and their shops) but it’s more visible now we’re all talking about it online.
FWIW I still spend the majority of my hobby time on Warhammer (so many state troopers, aargh!)
But … as a community, I think we’re better than that. We’re an easygoing bunch (~600 comments on your important announcement aside :)). Without naming names, there are plenty of places online where folks are taking things just a little too seriously. That’s why I get most of my news from this site.
You’re doing a great job – and, by and large, so are we. I see an open minded community without the much of the forum posturing you see elsewhere. The fact that there are places to talk about wargames in an easygoing, friendly manner was a big factor in my getting back into this. And I’m glad I did.
Good luck BoW! It’s a new chapter and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Great show guys, I like the on location style of filming. I would like to say that I am pleased with your decision to continue with some Games Workshop material. I completely understand why many of the BoW community and evening the BoW team may have negative feelings towards GW, however on a personal level I love 40K and I love BoW so I really wanted to see you guys continue to do some work on GW games
On that note, are you still thinking of doing a Space Marine week? It would be fantastic to see your thoughts on the new Codex, rules, etc.
Great vid guys, I have to say that whilst you obviously are not as financially secure as you were , Warren looks a hell of a lot healthier than he has done for the last 6 months or so, the stress was obvious.
I like the 40K content, I dislike the company, I often dislike the miniatures these days as well because I just do not get the direction the art and design is going, but they still turn out a few good ‘uns here and there (Dark vengeance is to me, the best pack of minis you can get in a starter set, I think the FoW and Dropzone starters are better overall, but they do not compare miniatures wise, the hellbrute is truly fantastic in the flesh) and I still love my not blood angels chapter, plus as I’ve said before, covering GW games annoy them, I’d keep doing it for that alone, but then I’m a belligerent so and so.
For the future, I’m hoping for a Deadzone series, it seems to be exactly what I want (Necromunda reimagined)but I don’t really do kickstarter so have no real idea, I’d love to see whats in the box and how it plays before I buy the thing (I bought Dreadball solely off the back of your intro series, I didnt think it was something for me on first look), and the one thing I hope you can keep from the Hockley version of BoW is the warmahordes coverage, thats a game I’ve never played, was never interested in but the two guys who did the ‘beyond the battlebox’ series and that recent battle report game brought me into the world a little, and as its played in my new local area I’ll likely end up with an army of some description at some point. They were good videos, from a complete novice’s perspective.
Also, Malifaux 2.0 please.
I bought my first miniature in 1982 after being introduced, by a friend, to Dungeons and Dragons. It was a Ral Partha elf and I borrowed some oil paints from my uncle and spent hours pain stakingly painting it. Over the next few years I built up a collection of miniatures by Citadel, Ral Partha, Asgard … But mostly Citadel. I bought the first editions of Warhammer and Rogue Trader and played little skirmish games with my space marines against my friend’s orks.
Then in the early 90s I stopped. I was at university by then and didn’t have the money or the time. I thought I would never buy another miniature ever again and at some point I think I threw away all the minis I had.
Then, about a year ago, totally on a whim I decided to look at the war gaming scene again. My other half had started a new hobby (she makes her own clothes) and I was thinking I’d like a hobby too. I started to have fond memories of painting minis as a kid 30 years ago.
It took a long time for me to take the leap into actually buying anything. I didn’t know what I wanted. I spent hour after hour looking at various things and various companies and it was during this time I discovered BoW and liked what I saw.
I finally decided that what I was really interested in was 40k. It had only really just started when I had given up playing with toy soldiers and I didn’t know that much about it, but I just found it more interesting that the many, many other games I had looked at. I did a lot of research. I hadn’t bought or painted a mini for a very long time. I discovered some amazing YouTube channels, read lots of tutorials and came across the Inq28 and Inquismunda scene. It was this last thing that closed the deal for me. I thought, that’s it, I wanted to try my hand at converting, painting and collecting inquisitors, servitors etc. etc.
So, this summer I bought my first minis. After a tentative start and lots of practice, lots of trial and lots of error, I can now say that I am the proud possessor of 3 beautifully painted and customised miniatures, with more to come.
Then the whole GW thing blew up on BoW and I have to say that it upset me. It upset me that GW can be like they are, but what upset me most was the outpouring of anti GW vitriol on BoW. I do not defend GW for a second. The way they behave sometimes is vile, but I also know that the same can be said of pretty much all public companies with shareholders to service and IPs to protect. No, what upset me most was the way that many posters on BoW spoke about GW’s customers.
As somebody who knows very little about the war gaming community and is taking their first few tentative steps into it I was left feeling like everyone else thinks I’m a dick. I was left thinking that maybe I’m going to get ridiculed by other adult wargamers for doing what 12 year olds do cos they don’t know any better. It upset me and probably shouldn’t have, but it did.
So, I am so glad to hear what Warren said today about hobby elitism. There is room here for everybody and BoW is brilliant because it is inclusive. I hope that all this fuss will die down soon and we can get back to a point where we can all enjoy what we enjoy without being made to feel like a dick for enjoying it.
For you guys at BoW, this is your livelihood and that is why I have chosen to support you in my small way with a backstage pass. For the rest of us though, it is just toy soldiers. I hope we can all have a bit more live and let live and a lot less sneering and condecension.
Know how you feel mate, makes you think twice about declaring your love of your hobby, OR you can be like me and not give a flying f@#$ about what a bunch of petty people have to say, and argue all the more because it really winds people up when you say you aren’t affected by the price rises lol. I’m not elitist, I just like trolling trolls who seem to think everyone should do as they do, each to his own I say.
Wow!! Your story echo’s mine. Started with D&D many years ago, lost touch when I went to Uni and got a real job, my wife started card crafting and told me to get a hobby, we walked past a GW store, she pushed me in…. and WHAM!!! I was instantly hooked. So thank you GW for reintroducing me to the world of fantasy. I bought a box of Bretonnian knights and spent 4 hours painting a horse. I was in Nerdvana.
Then I stumbled upon BoW and they opened my eyes to a whole world of wargaming I didn’t know about. I saw Justin unbox a Warmachine model… and WHAM!! I was hooked again. I pick up my latest Warmachine order from my local store on Friday. 🙂
So thank you GW and thank you BoW for giving me a great hobby. I too hope all this nonsense will die down, so we can all spend our time concentrating on the hobby and not moaning.
@erastus, I have to say I felt the same way. I would often watch a video and see the torrent of GW hate in the comments made. It put me in a position where I felt that I couldn’t post my feelings as it would be seen to be supporting GW and as a result wrong. I felt by liking 40K I was in some way damaging the integrity of tabletop gaming.
I agree. I’m not a 40k player any longer but I think some of the views expressed went too far. If you’d just read these posts you’d think that 40k was doomed and no-one was playing it any more. I think most (including BOW) know this isn’t the case. 40k and Warhammer are still, by far, the most popular games at my local club and on it’s forum. I feel very much in the minority as someone not interested in GW systems.
Despite what has been said here you are part of the (less vocal so far) majority.
I haven’t played Last Night on Earth, so nice to see the unboxing and look forward to a review next week. We will be playing Zombie Dice and Zombies as our games of choice for the Halloween run up. Thanks for another great show!
Also, looking at all that gorgeous scenery has us wishing for an Irish vacation!
Nice one Lads amd welcome home. Youve come out of this shining, well done and heres to many more.
I love 40K because it was the game that introduced me to wargaming. I no longer play it as I don’t really get on with the new rules but am always interested in the new stuff GW brings out (and pleased I don’t play anymore when I see the prices!).
I still love 40K because I love the universe GW created for it so I read the novels and play Epic Armageddon to get my fix. I also play many other systems and you are my main source of information on these (I’d have had no idea about Mars Attacks for example without you, and Warren’s dodgy impressions, which I’ve now pledged on).
The main thing though is that I love this hobby and BOW is a portal to it for me. I got twitchy last weekend when you weren’t on. Keep up the great job of covering the many facets of our wargaming.
Just love what you guys are doing. The future of BoW sounds good to me.
How you all felt about receiving all those legal letters from GW must have been very draining’
Got to admit my own enthusiasm for 40K took a serious knock when you told us your news but I’m not that precious that I won’t get over it.
I have wargamed for many years and long before GW were on the scene and I enjoy a lot of games including some of theirs.
@somegeezer comments about the community on this site are sound. Its a fun site Long may it continue
I’m glad you guys have recognized that for a lot of people, 40K is part of their fabric, and the bi-directional elitism is damaging. I’ve always found the elitism tries to create and enforce a perception that people are binary creatures, incapable of enjoying several things in several different ways. People are more complex than that, and they can love Warmachine, Flames of War and 40K in equal measure, for equally divergent reasons.
I’m not a big fan of GW. I quite contently go month to month without making purchases from GW. I love what a lot of the other companies do in the miniature game space. I play a handful of games, but can only buy into and more importantly, store, so many games (thematic terrain, etc., take up a lot of space, and I’m also an avid board game and RPG player).
Anyways, you know, some people like Star Wars. To them the movies is what they know, and they are happy with that being the extent of their experience. Other people, are fans of Star Wars. They read the comics and novels, they collect the toys, they hunt down information and podcasts about it, etc. They may even decorate their homes in memorabilia. Sure, they enjoy Battlestar Galactica, and probably appreciate Star Trek, but Star Wars is core to a part of their identity. People who enjoy Tolkien are the same, to many people Lord of the Rings is the movies … to some fans, it’s being able to speak Sindarin. In other words, the continuum along which people can enjoy something, anything, is vast and in that continuum people will have varying levels of passion about specific elements.
For me, 40K (Not GW, I can separate the two) is my Star Wars. It’s far beyond the game, of which I skipped two versions. It’s the stories in the comics and Black Library, it’s the art, it’s the Universe (yup, I even enjoy finding the derivative, both blatant and subtle, inspiration), it’s the inspired 3rd party things like board games, videogames, and RPGs. When someone is Googling Princess Leia cosplay, I’m Googling for Sisters of Battle. It’s also getting absolute enjoyment from seeing how other people enjoy 40K, in all of it’s form.
I can dislike GW, and love 40K. I can dislike a specific version of the game, and still love 40K. I can absolutely appreciate and enjoy someone being a fan of something else like Warmachine or Dystopian Wars, and still love 40K. I really believe that a lot of other people can too.
Anyhow, long story short, I’m really glad to hear that you guys will be continuing to try to create a place where fans of all games and properties can feel comfortable just being fans, and when those fans don’t feel threatened because of what they are passionate about, maybe they’ll learn to love something new too.
Awesome show guys, thanks
Are the comments on the site that bad when it comes to criticising folks who play 40K? As I don’t tend to frequent the specialist GW content much I don’t see the comments all that much.
Its about people taking negative posts about GW personally more than anything else … personally i refuse to fund a company that bullies its own customers and community. Saying all big companies behaves questionably and use that as an excuse for GWs treatment sums up perfectly how GW survives.
Disclaimer: just MY opinion
It’s not the content of individual posts, it’s the sheer number of them. It’s the constant barrage of anti GW which I think ultimately will damage BoW if it continues by turning 40k players away from this site.
If you don’t like GW then that’s fair enough. Don’t buy their products.
However, if you keep up this constant anti-GW stuff you will just sour the atmosphere and spoil BoW for those people who do like GW. I think Warren’s statement was an attempt to draw a line under things and let us all move on, but there are people who I suspect will not do this.
Its comments like GW fans are lemmings and glutton’s for punishment. Even comments like it bullies its customers, I haven’t been bullied, I pay, they supply a product. End. Christ one dick on here compared support of GW to supporting Nazis!
And yes, it gets to a point where you think “why the hell am I paying to support a site where everyone seems to hate my hobby and these same people have even suggested we have a corner of the site for GW fans called the chum bucket!”
It’s not the comments I take personally, it’s the over-extension of one person’s experiences as being a reflection of the community as a whole.
Games Workshop has very strict, many would say abusive, policies in everything from community management to business relationships, I don’t dispute that.
But, my local GW has always been friendly and personable. When I’ve had an issue they’ve been fast to resolve it. When I go in they treat my family (wife and kids) with respect. The manager has never tried to force me into a purchase, or offer anything but what I went in for. Their advice has always been straight forward and non-condescending. GW Customer Service has been nothing but stellar to me. Sure, I pay a premium for that, the models are expensive.
But I’ve never felt abused by them, nor have I ever felt like GW has targeted me at a personal level.
I take more offense to bloggers and posters believing that their opinion is my opinion, and assuming that my support of one of the basic tenants of etiquette (If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all) is just some form of spineless acquiescence to GW, than I do any imagined injustice suffered by GW.
To be fair to the community here, it’s not as vitriolic as it can be elsewhere. With the exception of a few names that seem to pop up with the usual “40K sucks, be a real gamer and play something else”, “GW is evil, hates puppies, and kills people’s dreams” kinds of comments whenever a 40K story comes out (or God forbid another GW did something dumb news story) it’s pretty gentle around here.
It seems to be a rare exception that something goes completely off the rails for pages and pages, thankfully. But, like anywhere on the ‘net, when they go off the rails they do go personal every once in a while.
A great show guys; good to see Ireland again – it’s been about ten years since I visited those parts. I agree with the elitism aspect. I am currently involved in a mainly historical group, who whilst don’t outwardly mock sci fi/ fantasy, sideline it by other tactics. It’s a shame as they also place an age limit to block under 16’s. It’s all bullshit. The same tactics were used on me 25 years ago by the old crusties, and it was only a few of the younger members who kept our interests going.
For a hobby, we cannot marginalise anyone coming into this, especially as there is a trend for the younger hobbiests who drop out late teens/ early 20’s and then pick up later on in life. But these gamers will only return if they remember a hobby with affection. I look forward to your future intents for a club setup guide. I realise I could probably set up a club today, but it’s much easier to progress with others doing the same.
I’m rambling now, but let’s stop all the hate getting flung around. For one, I’ve not touched 40k for 5+ years but now looking to build up an ork contingent to see where this goes. Anyone want to critise me for that, well… I’m not really that bothered 🙂
Just wanted to say I agree with you. A club should be welcoming not restrictive, historical or otherwise.
We’ve had 20+ pages of mixed sentiment regarding the GW issue…enough please. Lets get back to enjoying BoW content.
I am also eagerly awaiting a club setup guide.
Warren – this is just what you’ve been waiting for, 3D Augmented Reality linking to RFID for Table Top
RFID Tracking Grid
The RFID Tracking Grid sits underneath your surface. When used with the bases (see the Bases section below) or your own RFID tags, the software can track and uniquely identify them across the surface. This allows you to associate tags with physical objects such as miniatures, cards, board game pieces, or anything else that fits on top of the surface. You can use the tracking and identifying abilities to augment your pieces, such as displaying stats or a health bar next to a physical miniature, or calculating the distance between two separate miniatures.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/technicalillusions/castar-the-most-versatile-ar-and-vr-system?ref=live
Wow thanks for this!
I was about to post this too; it’s a much better idea than the Golem one, especially the idea for the RFID tracking grid, which they’re working on producing a flexible material, so people can put it over terrain and such. And all we have to do is put an RFID sensor in the base.
There’s a bit more info about both here: http://youtu.be/GpmKq_qg3Tk 🙂
There’s some more info about it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpmKq_qg3Tk
Damn it my link isn’t posting! Check out Tested’s youtube video for more information from the creators entitled: Testing the CastAR Augmented Reality Glasses
This is highly interesting, and I’m saying this as a real RFID professional.
Yeah this is more what I was thinking rather than what Golem Arcana is offering. Something that makes gaming actually more dynamic, rather than just a fancy rules mediator.
From a professional level, for my area of work (theoretical chemistry) this would be extremely useful for teaching purposes.
To all WFB and 40k fans,
I don’t like 40k the miniature game for a few reasons, but I’m sure that you love it.
It’s none of my business what you play and certainly not my right to call you names or blame you that you love this game. Just like it’s not for you to blame me or call me names. I’m sure that you love that game as much as I love my games.
It makes me sad that people make you feel bad about talking about your hobby or defending it. They should think twice about saying certain stuff.
Understand that I, and I hope most members, don’t think bad about you. But I think that people like me mostly don’t say this… So as in ‘Valerie’s letter’ from ‘V for Vendetta’ comes this, I hope you get what I mean by it and don’t take it the wrong way:
“But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may not meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you: I love you.
With all my heart.
I love you.
-Valerie.”
Welcome back Lads 😀 I would love to see some Kings of War “how to play” and other companies products. I used to be a Warhammer Fantasy purist *yes the shame* but as I got older I branched out and after watching your Flames of War coverage I got the Open fire Starter set and the Warmachine Starter set and Love both games. Now my hands are itching to get a copy of Dreadball and Dead Zone by Mantic when it out lol.
Keep Up the good work 😀
I personally love the 40k world. For me Its more the fluff, stories and modelling. Iv probebly played about 5/6 games over the last 4 years since iv been collecting the models, mostly coz I live in the sticks and have noone to game with( my mates think im a big geek :), but I get a lot of enjoyment from converting and painting. Also all the books and sites like this are where I spend most of my time when not at work or socialising. I generally don’t spend money in the GW stares as FW gets what I most of my money 🙂 The new Heresy line is amaising and the books are fantastic! But whenever I do go in I cant fault the guys in there, they are always willing to sit and chat or explain things to me. Never pushing their products.
I don’t think I could stay away from 40k/ Heresy even if I wanted too, Im hooked. The CEO of GW could come round my house and kick my dog and Id still be asking him whats getting released next by FW.
For people to say to me that Im a Mug for giving them my money. I would just like today that I work very hard for my wages. As a paratrooper when im getting shot at and blown up in Afghan I will spend my money on whatever I wish and who the hell are you sat in your mums spair room at 40 year old to tell me otherwise. (Sorry to those recently devorced or just staying over ;)This is MY hobby and Il play it how I wish.
To all those that are, like me, sticking with what they love, well done and dont let the ney Sayers tell you otherwise.
To BOW thanks for sticking with us 40k freaks. I do love this site and you guys make it definately worth paying for.
Keep the Vids coming and please do a Heresy week.
