I gotta say, XLBS has got to be my favorite segment of BoW. This alone makes the backstage cost worth it. Let alone all the special deals and whatnot that backstage gives you. The laid back feel is just great, and every story about Savannah is beyond adorable.
As for the journey man stuff, something easy to get out would be brackets or guidelines maybe so that people, whether in clubs or just large groups of friends, could kind of do their own little escalation thing. Just start going through system by system and think up a ‘journey man’s guide’ if you will.
Testify. I shall miss the BS if it goes on hiatus.
Yup. Me too
Yeah. I want to +1 this.
I love XLBS, it’s always awesome to watch Monday morning (Australia).
I’d love to start a journeyman thing for DZC here in Australia, now the boxed set has come out. I don’t have any experience with it (it’s not something that I’ve seen done in Australia before). So a guide, or even video guide on what it’s about and how to run one would be awesome.
A “how to play” DZC would be awesome as well. You guys haven’t done on in the past have you, because I’ve tried searching your site for it.
Keep up the great work, loving the content at the moment on BoW!
This might be a start for co-op games to look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziL905aXGnE
Sorry for the blank post, but you tube links are blocked. A good start for looking for co-op games is to search for ‘Dice Tower Top 10 Cooperative Board Games’ on You Tube. Sometimes disagree with their recommendations. Happy Sunday
Great show, no kids myself but given me some great ideas for my wee nephew.
When I’m too busy and stressed to game then I often find painting to be relaxing. It tends to be the time when I’m most likely to paint.
My other half has no interest in gaming, which is probably a good thing as she aint half a sore loser lol.
I can’t stand games like Snakes & Ladders either. For much the same reason I can’t abide Talisman.
We’ve been running a Journeyman here at Titan in Stourbridge but we’ve had to adapt the format to two weeks per ‘week’ because of the way things have been set up. It is a LOT of fun and I wouldn’t have thought about getting into Warmachine without it.
I may be a little quick on the painting though! I’m currently on 15 points and looking to get on with some painting in the next ‘week’ – Battle Mechaniks for the win – .
A neat system indeed.
Ben
Careful Warren with those games in the woods, before you know it you’ll be wearing bits of old curtain while waving a latex sword about. Its the slippery slope to larping I tell ya… Just kidding, sounds great for your daughter, will really develop her imagination which we need even more in this day and age.
As a Father to be i am really loving your Ideas Warren its getting me thinking how i could get my little one into war gaming in the future. Thanks Guys
Warren mentioned something about looking more into how the industry makes models and things, and the kind of stuff that anyone can do at home in their kitchen or garage.
Well I do a lot of silicon molding and resin casting, where I make various terrain and scenery pieces, and it’s something I believe anyone can have a go at, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with, and hopefully getting more people into this side of the hobby.
Anyway, Great show guys, cant wait for the next one.
Cool show guys 🙂
I got a young cousin into gaming years ago with 40K. Now he is more into gaming than I am and does a lot of RPGs. Not a parent myself so don’t know where I would start with a kid
Nice show,guys, thanks
Looking forward to some KoW coverage. It’s another game I’ve yet to play but I’ve heard it compared to Epic – i.e. customisation is minimal, so the emphasis is on tabletop generalship, rather than list-building.
Also I saw the mahoosive game they managed to play in 4 hours at Mantic’s open day. Very impressive!
About bloody time for some kings of war coverage.
By the way talisman isn’t just dice rolling. It’s deciding what equipment to carry, learning wha followers you want and how to rid your self of the others. Which stats to try and improve.
It will be nice to see some Kings of war stuff as besides you can use the figs for WH I have no idea how the game plays
Awesome show guys…great for the morning joe!
A great start to the morning. Cheers guys
Great show guys.
I have introduced my boys to wargaming – simple stuff to start with – the old Space Crusade; then quick play battletech etc. Now they play their own stuff. It all comes down to relationship and them not feeling that you are trying to get them into the hobby – just that you are having fun and spending time together. Conventions are good too, especially if the games masters are willing to work with children – my boys are enjoyed many a demo and other games at conventions. In the end they have to decide for themselves if they wish to pursue the hobby – just keep it as time spent doing something together and allow it to develop from there.
I’d definitely love to see more behind-the-scene stuff about the hobby, and chat’s with the games designers (love to see one with Andy Chambers!). I’ll be looking forward more to the Weekender and XLBS shows than the On The Table shows, since the news stuff is pretty much covered by the website itself, although it did open my eyes to some new games, and the one to avoid by Fantasy Flight Games. I still prefer the other shows though.
It’s still good stuff all round though! 🙂
Warren should license scooby doo adventures 🙂
Warren, there is a very finite and defined limit as to what you can do at the sink or on the kitchen table.
This is defined as Anrea’s Limitless Patience.
Great video guys.
I mentioned in a previous comments about the kids versions of games like Catan that are great for when they get to 4 or 5 , my two loved them , and now play the adult versions, I’ve never really pushed miniatures at them, rather leaving them to show interest by themselves, one has, one not so much, apart from X wing, seeing the blockade runner pics floating around the internet has been his weekend highlight.
Warren is an inspiration to Fathers and future fathers!! Keep it up!
Im looking forward to seeing what sorts of things I can make in the garage, nice.
Like to say a big thanks to Stu for mentioning crossbows and catapults last week as I have been looking to see what I could get for my son. He’s mad into Star Wars and toy soldiers, but cannot connect dice with this (he’s only 5!). However, Stu’s suggestion will be a big hit; I can’t wait til it comes through! Another thing I’ve been doing is to use ‘hands’ for a measuring device, or as a flamethrower template. It’s all little things, but it gets his imagination working and away from senseless amounts of TV/ PC games which are so damaging.
Kings of war starter set? Mine!
I myself am starting to think of a way to get my 18 month old boy slowly into gaming. He has those car toys that come with sets of roads and I’m thinking of using those road tiles as a gaming board so the garbage truck can go on a quest to save the ambulance… Things like that. He’s got a garage, a construction site with a crane and loads of roads… I’m sure I can manage a lot of gaming afternoon with him soon.
Have to give this dungeon crawling with my daughter a try. Sounds realy fun
With regard to the Journey Man League:
Some games are obvious for this, such as Dreadball. I believe Mantic event do a league poster you can get (my local club has one).
An escalation league is a great way of introducting people and allowing them to build both experience and their army.
The other option is a campaign. While this requires more work it can incorporate both of the above. It can also help, if run well, with maintaining interest over the time period. This for me has often been the hardest element of any league. At first everyone is very excited but life soon gets in the way. Over the weeks, as attendance drops due to work, family etc it becomes hard work to ensure the league doesn’t dwindle away. An interesting campaign can stop this, although not always.
A resourse with tips on how to organise and run a campaign would be great.
Keep up the good work, guys. How about a Tale-of-4-Gamers-style thing. If you remember that from when White Dwarf was good. Pick a game, have weekly or monthly updates on how the painting/modelling/games have been going. Up the points levels every stage so it grows from small skirmish to full game. Should be fairly easy to set up.
i absolutely get the feeling of being to tired, iv done 60 hours in 5 days at work and i am busted. was really hoping to have a game of storm of magic with my fiance but my brain feels like mush. something i have found quite fun is playing role-playing games with no minis. Due to my partner being permanently of ill health she has to spend quite some time resting in bed. we both rolled characters for call of Cthulhu recently. As my partner is the person i play with the most due to the fact i live in the sticks and no local gaming clubs or organised play are accessible to me especially when my days off change every week. its really fun to be able to chill out in bed all you need is a character sheet and a tea tray we take it in turns to DM the story and most of the time just make it up as we go along swaping every once in a while. this doesn’t just make for good fun but also interesting stories as the other person takes control of plot progression.
How about doing some Warpath as well, if you’re planning KoW?
I’ll be uncle soon so those are very nice advice 🙂
mantic do some awesome undead
Maybe we could see a few mini battle reports or articles re the Journeyman leagues? Just to give us a taste of the action going on. Perhaps a few pictures of the various paintjobs as well – cool to see what people have knocked together, regardless of the level of painting.
Might give people a kick to run their own in their area as well.
My son never had the slightest interest in my miniature games (I’ve tried to involve him, but it just isn’t his thing), but the day I broke out Munchkin, he became a dedicated gamer. He now roleplays (Pathfinder), enjoys board games and card games. Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding what interests you. Remember, there is no one way to enjoy the gaming hobby.
Another idea, building on the “tale of 4 gamers” that innes brought up. I remember a variation where the gamers had a set amount of cash they could spend each month to build their army. Watching the thought process that went into building on a budget was very interesting to me (even though the armies had to be built using only GW kits, which these days have plenty of competition, both in price and quality). I think this would be a good way to show how a fun army can be built using the most economical methods (and hopefully a little creativity).
My daughter who now is 5 where/still is fascinated by Dinosaurs as well she even have her own red T-Rex who from time to time have left her presents and even threaten to usurper Santa round X-mass. Also let me say that the only thing that is more painful that a three-horn to step on on the stairs in the morning is a Lego brick.
We been using some My Little Pony to play with and might just take the next step and try Dwarfs Kings Hold soon
When are going to talk about Dust Warfare? It is a brilliant game with good mechanics and great miniatures. You also promised a painting video on one of the axis tanks.
My little Aubrey is coming up to eight months and I’m already plotting what games I can get her into. I’m getting there with my wife Catherine as we now play zombicide occasionally and I’m thinking about getting Super Dungeon Explore as I think she’ll like the look of the characters. Can’t wait for us all to have some good family gaming fun!
Picking up on your comment on the Weekender, being a Backstager is certainly worth the cost of a coffee.
Will be nice to see what new content is coming our way in the future. Keep up the varied stuff.
Looking forward to the KoW viedos, reviews etc. Do you have any idea when the next Dreadball Acedemy is due out?
Like always, the guys are phenomenal, Warren, you made my wife cry with your story LOL, I do believe that’s an awesome way to create memories that will never fade from your daughter’s heart. Great job, we do have two and we have done as much as we can to enjoy every single moment in life. I’m in the military and get deployed to war all the time, and trust me , you never know when is the last time you’ll see them. So make the best of it. You are doing it Kudos my man Kudos.
Would love to see some fresh child hobby slots as a parent myself ;0)
Great show.
Keep up BS, it’s Sunday evening gold!
Great
Great as always!
I have never tried a true “fantasy” tabletop game. Could kings of war be the one? 😉
Great to see you guys talking about KoW at the end there. Mantic get a lot of attention (and rightly so) both positive and negative for their models, KS and approaches to the industry in general but KoW as a game is often forgotten. If I had had something as easily accessible and not so ‘fussy’ for want of a better word as a kid, I don’t think I would have had a 10 year+ hiatus from the hobby. No substitute for just getting men on the table (and yes I realize how dodgey that sounds!)
I playing catchup with you Warren when it comes to preparing the way for my little ones 🙂 Great ideas, has me thinking of ideas for later down the track for them )and possibly starting the brainwash now hehe)
Great show. Well worth becoming a back stager
Yeah, I sudder at the thought of future spawn messing with my toys. Just not ready man.
I tried to get my kids into gaming when they were younger:

Didn’t really pan out in the long run…
