Army Painter RuneWars Hobby Weekend Live Blog – Saturday
Shading With An Airbrush
Shading with an airbrush is a skill you might want to look at mastering for something different on your models.
We go through some of the skills you can bring to the tabletop allowing you to achieve some interesting ideas and lay the groundwork for future techniques.

It’s nice that for those who are comfortable with using it the airbrush is there to use. So many techniques being used this weekend. What a great bootcamp.
Always good to pick up more tips for airbrushing! This is an awesome opportunity for those involved!
I like using an airbrush to lay down a wash do tone down a mini.
different, will be nice to see to different finished armies
really glad to have him share the technique with us, excited to see how far he gets.
And this is where I feel like a painting Luddite because I just can’t get comfortable with using an airbrush. I can see the obvious advantages to using one but I just…can’t!
Have not got into airbrushing yet and it is the one thing that I think could be really useful and have been looking at it for a while. Great to see that it is being used here as well.
i love my airbrush, it so much easier for me to paint my troops.
interesting method i haven’t seen before. always learning new stuff around here 🙂
An interesting idea for using an airbrush, I might try it at some point.
pre shading and Zenithal Highlight are ultimate combo with airbrush
Just cutting my airbrush teeth
I’m the same, I picked up a cheap airbrush a while back, and it’s whet my whistle enough that I’m investigating what to buy in the mid range of the market etc.
Good to see some airbrushing in action, shadows from below, that is a nice new contrast technique I have not seen before, awesome.
Yes Justin please make sure we get some coverage of this army I really want to the end result.
Ohhh interesting! As a hopeful starting airbrusher soon, I’ll need all the inside info and tips there are! 🙂
I’ll be keeping an eye on these guys through the weekend!
Great idea!
Limited space in my apartment has kept me from expanding past pots. I might set up a proper painting space with airbrush when I get myself a garage
Interesting. I’m curious to see how it turns out.
Cool. I must try this out.
That’s a cool idea. I wish I was as cool as justin so warren and lloyd would buy me an airbrush 😉
To prime in purple is a clever idea if you are going to paint in browns or reds the mini, it adds richness to the tones and to the shadows.
Good idea and technique. I’ll have to give it a try.
I don’t have an airbrush and I think that technique would be hard to get under a mini with a rattle can. Will have to file this idea away for later though.
It works well with rattle can as long as you are far back with the can and putting down light mists
Interesting technique, I’ll give that a go!
I will give that technique a try soon.
Surely the base will get in the way of giving an even and accurate undershadow?
not if use more translucent/lighter colour and are using very thin coats with the airbrush.
Exactly you are preshading with this technique so you are just forcing contrast its a quick dirty hack with an airbrush to do away with the recess wash stage…
(Take Notes)
burned umber one of best paints ever.
I will try this in the future
Nice to see so many different styles of painting getting used this weekend.
i usually do 3 colours one frome the underside
one at 45° from the zenit
and a small pure zenital
Would like to see a finished piece . Looks kinda cool
cool! I still have never plunged into the airbrushes
WOW I didn’t expect to see anybody using an airbrush this weekend. I still haven’t tried one yet myself although one of our club members is tempting me to.
I’m a newbie airbrush user myself, so I’m always looking for ways to bring it into my hobby without feeling like diving in the deep end. Thanks!
interesting approach
One of these days I’ll get an airbrush and then I’ll try the tips that provided on BoW.
One of these days I’ll get an airbrush. When I do I’ll give this a try.
Might have to give that method a look.
got an airbrush, just trying to work up the courage to use it now but nice to see the sort of effects you can achieve with it
I love shading models this way.
cool technique.
A lot of my Infinity models have three levels of airbrushing done before I start… Black underneath, gray or tan straight on, and white from just the very top. I haven’t tried it with something as subtle as those browns he’s using.
Gonna a have to give this a try.
Never seen this technique before, I am familiar with zenithal shading though.
As with Justin, I am also very curious to the end result of this guy’s army.
And ofcourse will also try this technique myself.
Seen that technique before but would love to see how his turns out after the lighter standard zenithal is applied
Interesting
Sadly I still use my airbrush as a base coat tool instead of some of the finer detail work that many people use it for.
I was just wondering about this in the previous video. Very curious to see how it comes out.
Huh! Very interesting!
I hope you guys will post pics of these once finished.
Just using an air brush is something I need to learn.
pretty interesting, would be keen to give this a try on something like zombies or skeletons first
got to try these out
Nice tip. Have to try this out.
Like that. Need to get my airbrush back up and running.
one of these years i may have to pick up an airbrush
I’ve it o breakout my airbrush again.
That is a whole new level of speed painting 🙂
Great seeing a useful hobby tool in use. Especially in painting “armies”, airbrushes are great.
Never used an airbrush before so might give it a try
What’s the smallest you can paint with n air brush mini wise? Love the ide of them but most of my stuff is 10 mm or lower..
Burnt Umber is a superb color to airbrush.
Nice one, more of those please
Love seeing new ideas for painting.
nice paints!!! I love the hobby weekend, I love you 😀
I’ve done a lot of zenith highlighting with my priming, I’m going to have to try out a zenith shading now to see how it looks.
cool brush
I use and loves this techique, that I learned here at BoW, in a step by step tutorial of a 10mm scale warmachine (can’t remember the name). I have used it to give a pearlish look to the miniatures, with the revers lighting blue and the highlight red/orange, and it looks great 😀
I’m very interested in seeing the finished product. Ive never used an airbrush before but this had peaked my interest.
Keep showing airbrush stuff!
Interesting to see techniques of all sorts for painting this weekend. I will say that airbrushing is daunting at first. I’m no expert at all, and there’s a lot I can’t do with an airbrush, but the basics – base coating, pre-shading, applying varnish etc are absolutely worthwhile things to learn, and very achievable. Give it a go!
That’s a great idea. Too bad I don’t have an airbrush to try this on yet…
Seen this technique done a few times. But to be honest, i really need to look into this highlight technique and see how to apply it to my painting
Just bought an airbrush not long ago. Don’t know enough about it get. Nice to see new things.
I need to use my airbrush a lot more.
Shadows as an inverted zenith. Only at a hobby weekend.
Cool, I’ll be testing that with my airbrush soon.
I have to get an airbrush some point.
looks difficult
@bmad Couldn’t be easier point mini away from you at about 45 degrees spray a light mist….
I loved this stuff!
Never tried airbrushing – also looking forward to seeing how this one turns out!
Good stuff
What a good apporch – never thought of thst
I’ve done that with black before. Prime gray, highlight with white from the top and black from the bottom, then paint.
