Talking Weapons With 4Ground Ben

The 4Ground guys haven't just brought their Fabled Realms minis with them, they also brought a selection of the gear you might find on the battlefields of their world!

Ben took me through a couple of the different weapons, their history, and how they would be used.

Ben is awesome. I love listening to him speak of the weapon usage and historical knowledge.

Ok…I’m getting the impression Ben may be taking things a WEE bit too seriously now. The objective of the weekend is to kill and maim your opponents on the tabletop…not in real life. Or have I picked it up wrong? Hope A&E have been prepped for a large number of people with trauma and projectile injuries.

davetaylor

Love that you sheathed the sword as if it were a katana, Sam.

turbocooler

Nice, I love the old weapons.

caledor2

Nice assortment of weapons.
And Ben is right never fire a bow or crossbow without a projectile, it can be dangerous.

golonka

So the Warren vs Justin grudge match involves real weapons!?

beetle

Weapons and Warren in the same room. Not the best idea.

silverfox8

Yeah keep Warren away from the real weapons!

aermord

Great looking weapons!

chosenman44

Ummm, chose your weapon.

kristoph09tailz

chaingun

Oh my God! Ben I love you for that term: Real World Fantasy!!! Thats what I love and always when I try to tell friends and people why I like fantasy that has a real feeling and that are inspired by real armour and so on I have not used a specific term but from now on I will always use Real World Fantasy! Love it! I am absolutly sold on everything about Fabled Realms after these weekend that you put togheter with Beasts of War absolutly love it! I will buy all the Fabled Realms miniatures when you get them to your store, because I was not able to get in on the Kickstarter and cant wait to be able to buy them from your site!

wolf320f

hope your first aid kit is a big one lol

When you say we’ll look at some of the “other stuff” and Ben smells some wrapped cylindrical object… do I want to know?

smitty14

It’s always interesting to hear Ben talk and the knowledge he has. A real shame about the crossbow but still a nice collection.

collins

ben is like wikipedia but bearded!

antiphony

I love these chats with Ben.

mc1gamer

They need to shoot that xbow 😉

lordbob

I would listen to Ben for hours and hours.

Ben’s knowledge would be an asset to any game. I have a feeling the weapons will feel authentic in Fabled Realms!

The shorter swords would have been used by archers historically. In regards to the war bow the poundage draw would have been around 200lbs, which is why English and Welsh archers learnt and practiced the bow from an early age. The crossbow was at least double the draw poundage, with some being far greater. You could also train a soldier to use the crossbow very quickly and didn’t require the years of practice developing the strength to draw a war bow. This weapon revolutionized medieval warfare, you could very quickly arm and train bow men the only draw back was the speed in reloading.

I have a 90lb longbow, and that’s requires quite a lot of strength to draw, and to hold that draw steady is really difficult. The war bow would have required some significant strength, and bow men must have looked like top heavy modern day athletes.

There are manuals for most of the weapons from that period that have survived and give us a great deal of insight to how they were used but a greater understanding of medical combat and warfare.

warhammergrimace

That’s medieval combat not medical lol

was this a dead? heat scenario video?

brucelea

I love the way that Ben and the 4ground guys have thought through the impact and complexity of using the different types of weapons and fed that into the rules. Great depth of knowledge.

normandyfan

awesome weapons

stormshriek

that was fascinating, thanks.

rgreenparadox

I love the fact that THEY love all of this stuff and it shows in their game and terrain.

jemmy

Real world fantasy game: a formula for a great game!

lawnor

“I know! Lets get a bunch of nerds away for the weekend, all excited about a new game. Lets wait until they are sleep deprived, hyped on sugar and energy drinks, and then lets let them play with medieval weapons!. What could possibly go wrong?”

paragon

Like many, Wargaming got me into historical. I havent taken the plunge and done HEMA yet, but im close.

fireblarney

I love the way the 4Ground guys have always got right down into the details with the terrain, so it is no surprise that they’re handling the weapon design in the same way.

emptynessisform

don’t touch the blades

eddieharr

someone’s gonna die!

hargarpad

looks like they have great ideas

darnast
