The Weekender: The Return From Salute!
April 19, 2014 by dignity
We're back from Salute and have a mountain of things to chat about! John has popped by this week to show off his Kshatriya from Gundam Unicorn and it looks like one of the most amazing kits of all time! We'll also be announcing the winner of our BoW Goodie Bag from the competition we ran last week at the event!
We'll also be having a chat about what's caught our eye this week in the gaming world and continue to chinwag about Salute last weekend. It was quite the tiring but exciting adventure as always!

Ahhhhh ! I’m waiting for your return !
Happy Week-end, gentlemen !
Absolutely drooled at that battle cruiser 😀
Yeah, the Kum Garage is a piece of kit I’d never want to ask for….
The only bad thing about Salute is there’s too much awesome to fit into one day.
Don’t forget gamer funk, was pretty close in that hall…
Battle cruiser…operational. Hawk Wargames will prolly ruin my bank account because if they really release a space ship game which works well to create narrative battles with DZC I just might have to buy an army and a fleet =D
And [deity] knows I already have stuff to paint for at least a year. But DZC is so…shiny!
Only a year, you need more – grow the hobby stock pile until it becomes a hobby mountain :p
WOW! Any chance we can have a link to where I can buy that Gundam? Amazing Weekender guys, can not wait for Salute coverage.
for that Gundam kit, google hobbylink japan, start there.
Well played, Mastercrated, well played. Their Hellmask helmets are awesome, by the way. I’ve just ordered in the last of the body parts I need to make up a squad of not-Hellghast 😉
Hey Warren, you know what will help you survive the flight to and from Spain? A pair of comfortable, noise cancelling headphones and a good book.
A good.. Star Wars.. book 😉
Drugged hamburger. Works every time.
Don’t forget the pint of that particular milk.
I got the kingdom death pin-ups after you showed them the other week. They are beautiful. Went together well. Had to look online a few times to see how they should look though. No instructions or finished pics in the books. Not for beginners. Glad you guys had a good time. Wish I could have jumped the pond to go. Looking forward to tomorrows show.
Hi Guys. Sorry you missed our “Get to the Chopper” Game. Will get some photos to you today and someone will be in touch about filming a game.
Cheers guys your prolonging my post Salute buzz nicely. Can’t wait for the show coverage
meant to say box..
Never been into Gundam but that kit is spectacular.
I do make plastic kit models though, mainly aircraft, the £100 1/32 scale Tamiya kits , be it the Spitfire, Mustang or the F-16 are amazing quality stuff. That level of detail is too fragile for gaming use, but seeing that level of production tech making it into the wargaming industry it will transform peoples perceptions of big kits.
Warren likes large tanks? Try some of these:

And even artillery!

That Kshatriya is jaw-droppingly good. I’d love to see them take on a Dreaball robot, with it transforming from jack to guard to striker, but I guess wargaming’s a bit niche and Mantic are a bit niche for wargaming (niche squared). Ah well I can dream … or learn to scratchbuild.
Great show fellas!
Mastercrafted isn’t that bad, I still prefer Den of Imagination for freehand sculptors, but I’ll be checking out those guys as well after i move so I have more money to spend.
I should state there is a Mastercrafter painting service who’s not that bad, found them when searching for Mastercrafted.
Great to have my fill of a weekender again. Got plenty to watch over the weekend with XLBS and save the tour for the Monday 🙂
Great show as always guys.
There was a megatonne of things to see at Salute; I loved it! I missed out on ArcWorlde’s stuff though, which I’m kicking myself for as I backed their kickstarter, lol. It would be cool to see you guys talk to Warploque on the designer’s chat videos.
@warzan That chapter will be awesome! Will they be a different colour to your famed copper coloured ones? 😛
That Dropzone space game sounds ace! I wondered if that battle cruiser was a hint at something like that.
Interesting to hear that Ronnie Renton was behind the Baneblade kits, and how Warpath could develop into a full on big battle game.
Amazing Weekender, so much shiny beauties. And about Gundam, let me just leave this here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLAsH1z8aZs
I think Warren should try to go on a crusade to find his perfect Mecha Anime/Manga. I have a few here that might be the ones :
Gasaraki ( Yes, let’s just get fucking serious, this a great series with a noir tone, intriguing plot and hardcore animation style. No Chibi, Kawai or Epic named attack, just pure seinen. Give it a try! Hell i want to see it again right now!) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbsVMrfogP4
Getter Robot ( is just a lot more epic-cheese like but the warriors are more humane but insane ) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwU7qXr5CQ0
PatLabor ( This is a far more serious take on robots, no epic battles but amazing none the less, i’ll recommend it for anyone that likes good seinen-like 90’s anime ) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v6Gy6_pm3s
It has not much sense to add Evangelion to the list, because it least for me is more about humanity and the characters rather than the mechas and battles, but i have to mention it anyway…
There is tons more but there is enough variety there, and i’d removed all the kawai, ecchi and silly stuff that is clearly not worth to mention ( sadly there are good series that have some of that stuff and are good but you have to pass the bad after taste in order to enjoy the good bits… 90’s anime is not more… but there is good things still ).
@warzan: all quiet on the Martian front also has a British land iron clad (Thunderchild II) in the works, together with a slightly smaller naval gun tank, and a similarily sized Martian overseer tripod.
This is going to be just great!
Great show guys, I really hope to make it to Salute! one day.
Another brilliant and informative show thanks guys.
Great show. Always been a fan of Gundam kits. Not sure about the kit John has but Bandai kits don’t even need glue. lol ( Though they do come on sprues. )
Bit shocked to see you giving your copy of Myth away. I take it you weren’t too keen on it then. ( Unless of course you managed to get a second copy of it to give away. )
lol Yup Second Copy 😉
Ahha. Well that explains it. 😀
A really interesting video as always. Thank you so much for share Salute with people like me, who cannot afford to travel to UK. I have to agree with Justin, Mutant Chronicles film is great! The OST is incredible!
Are you coming to Spain? That´s great! I´d love to meet you in person, but I´m from Madrid and don´t know if I could go to Granada. If you have some spare time, I strongly recommend you to visit Alhambra and the Cathedral… Oh, and the 3rd of May Granada celebrates the “Fiesta de las Cruces”, when the cityzens make crosses with flowers, so if you want to stay more time…
@warzan Mate, I would love you forever if you could get some Kum bikes sent my way.
I absolutely agree with Warren here, the more people that get into the hobby, the more it will be able to grow. I myself have been trying to get some of my friends into Warhammer 40k, and recently Warmachine, since I finally broke down and bought a battlegroup. I’m making progress though, add at least 3 to that number in the next few weeks 🙂
The simple fact is: if you’re limiting yourself to just the wargaming industry or, worse still, just a single manufacturer, you are limiting your options and setting yourself up to be price-gouged like there’s no tomorrow.
Telling yourself that XXX makes the best kit and therefore there’s no need to look elsewhere is just self-delusional and there’s a 20 quid pair of flush cutters with your name on them…
As for this technology coming to wargaming industry… I wouldn’t hold my breath. For example Bandai mech kits, even the cheap ones, had fully poseable rubber joints you could even pull limbs out of. They were called polycaps and they were there… In the 80’s! That’s over 25 years ago. Seen anything like that on a wargaming model?
And if ready to play is your thing, you should look into Mobile Suit in Action and Complete Model -series. They run from 10 to 40 bucks, roughly.
Let’see if I can get a link here… Try

As for the golden age… I do get that some people just want to play. But Personally I don’t see the point of pre-chewed stuff. I like building and painting things, I dont’t want to buy it ready made! I’m starting to feel like the only member of a gourmet club who still wants to cook while everyone else is heading off to get a Happy Meal…
” I dont’t want to buy it ready made! I’m starting to feel like the only member of a gourmet club who still wants to cook while everyone else is heading off to get a Happy Meal…”
I may be wrong but only Dust provides the pre built option at the moment, and having seen those models, I wouldn’t consider them a ‘happy meal’ at all… they are higher quality than most of the kits available today.
Ready made can work, just look at the awesome X-Wing!
Interesting…never heard of Gundam…am i wrong to say it looks like a big Transformer?
OMG, I need that Gundam model, awesome show guys, costing me money ……..AGAIN!
Come on guys, where did you get that Gundam model from, been scouting the internet with no luck
Try Amazon they have some at £60+ that may the type your after.
Hey all! I am very new to the hobby and have only collected a small force of WHFB empire army however…I find some of the rules (especially random magic phase zerg) a bit tedious and too complex. I like the idea of games such as SAGA and bolt action, they seem to go at a faster pace and are more strategy orientated without being too much of a stats overload prior to the game. Also model counts seem a bit more friendly towards my wallet. Would you guys recommend these games? Are there any other ones you would suggest?
Another great video, thanks yall at BOW, keep up the good work. Taa very much
Great to see you getting into 7TV. I’ve been following their stuff since they started the Doctor Who minis, but would like to see how it plays before I get anything.
Hope you’ll talk more about ArcWorlde, too.
Oh, and Justin, here’s your segway:
I had a look around and done some digging for the NZ666 model kit. And Im afraid to say that Elyn Hobby no longer exist. After some legal action from Bandai it seems the company has disappeared and the model is no longer available.
Thanks for the info, what a shame as I don’t think I’ve seen a model of that quality, it would be awesome to sit and build that!
BFDZC, really?! Just tell me where to leave my paycheck. 🙂
And the Mastercrafted plan seems to have worked quite well. I think they’re capable of more than just making nice looking sculpts.
I bought some DUST models to check them out. The vehicles are pretty nice but it’s the same as when Prince August launched their pre-undercoated figures ages ago — where is that undefcoat going to be after you remove the mold lines? And yes, there are mold lines on the figures.
But that’s really beside the point. It’s not about the figures, it’s about everything. Terrain, figures, whatever… The push seems to be to cater for the instant gratification crowd.
I don’t want to play X-wing because it’s pre-painted. This has NOTHING to do with the quality or lack thereof. It could be the best figures in the world, if I haven’t painted them, I don’t want to play with them.
I enjoy the building and the painting perhaps more than the gaming. When someone does that for me, I feel they are taking my enjoyment from me. When the industry moves into that direction and pre-chewed becomes mainstay, it’s not my hobby anymore…
Another superb weekender from Warren Clarkson and it’s so good to see John turning up a bit more regularly, we’ve all missed you. Thank you for your limitless enthusiasm for gaming, Weekender and XLBS are something I look forward to each week. I’ll probably never get to a Salute/ Adepticon but this must be really close to being there
@warzan.
If you are after a land cruiser for your Nachtwolf. Have you seen Forged In Battles ‘Ratte’.
(There are some excellent pictures of the model on FiB website.)
FiB do a nice ‘1947 ‘range of vehicles, that may fit your army theme quite well.
I think the progress in plastic technology , is allowing more people access to the war gaming hobby.
Lots of companies are switching to plastic and delivering high quality products that are good value for money.
(The new Battlefront plastic box sets are a great example of this IMO. T34s, and SU 85/100s wink wink..)
Reducing the barriers to entry seems the key to growing the market IMO.And the more you sell the cheaper plastic production becomes , due to economies of scale.
So offering plastic minatures/model kits at lower prices allows more people to enjoy the hobby , and lower the costs to the company due to economies of scale.
Only complete short sighted idiots would replace white metal/resin kits with plastic kits for high volume production runs. And then charge the same price as the old expencive kits to limit the sales and prevent them from taking advantage of the economies of scale.
Why can they make a profit off that awesome Gundam kit?
Because they sell 1,000s of them that is how.And they are priced to sell that many.(Maximizing economies of scale means they only make a 10%to 20% profit on each sale , but the sales volumes are that high they make massive profits.)
If they priced it the same as GW , (76% mark up) they would not sell many at all , at £500-£600.
So the low sales volumes would render them very little profit, and potentially NOT get enough return to cover the development costs.
Anyhow, I digress.
Great weekender guys ,and excellent Salute coverage!
