Defiance
Rise of the remotes
Corvus belli is not being my friend just now. They are getting me down with the whole plastics thing. After a bit of ignoring the world they sent samples to youtubers and influencers. What a great decision I thought, still not going to buy what they say. I would rather trust my own eyes and have them in hand. They *chose to send* substandard models. I would save asked for my money back or replacements from CB if I was sent these. You had the perfect opportunity to hand pick your samples… You picked samples with defects and sent these out instead… Needless to say I am now more concerned then ever over the longevity over a rule system and the quality of the products I chose to buy in the future.
This has also had a surprising effect in me painting a self contained game with the best metal models on the market. I have lost my mojo a little. Where once there was joy, now lives despair, uncertainty and unease.
So that above is just an excuse for not getting loads painted. I did however get the remotes painted. I did hear something I think it may have even been on OTT about these just being 3d tokens. ALL OF WARGAMING IS 3D TOKENS!!!! Yes they deserve their sculpts and I do like them. Much more of a pain in the arse to paint than I thought, but I always underestimate how much painting these little guys will take.
Billie - This is Jazz's remote cute little funko foxy thing. Adorable. This took a bit of time with the short blue white blend as well as the red. I do love Scarlett blood from game colour. It is the best of reds.
Gaspar - This is Rahman's remote, not so cute but functional, this is the bot CB wishes to have around to get the plastic out of their arse when the time comes. Again this was very detailed to paint so small but perhaps more colours than in some full sized models.
Duchess - This is Trisha's remote. I don't get the double hat thing but I have seen people in real life wear hats like this so it must be a thing. Lets call this the CB thinking hat they can wear while in the corner and think about what they are doing. Purple is nice to paint it's something I used to enjoy a lot, I will however resist spending money on Aleph just for now. So that’s it for this salty update. Next up will be the Taigha Creatures if I can bring myself to paint them.
More to come, probably.

These all look excellent! Has rather taken away my enthusiasm to even start mine 🙂
sorry wasn’t supposed to be infectious. Get em started!
Still waiting for my full pledge to arrive but this is a tonic 🙂 Great work as usual! I should probably be more impressed by other parts of the project but the texturing on Rahman’s trousers is just aces.
Regarding your concerns about the new plastics, have you had a chance to have a go with them? I’ve seen a few vids on youtube and the experience with the new plastics appears to be mixed. I do think it may help with the price of their larger minis going forward though. Looks like they might be angling to make bigger stuff. Perhaps only for boardgames. Also is the big villain in Defiance made from this stuff? I know it wasn’t metal but offhand I can’t think what they did use.
A friend of mine tried to biostrip some Warlord minis made using the same process and they came out ruined. I think Corvus use a different material but we’re a bit worried that may be a problem to come.
Thanks! I was sent a sample by a friend but not of what CB have done, just of the SioCast and something they have tested out.
Pricing is a thing, but I spend so much on this stuff already I would just have to budget for that. I do hope this is only for S4+ infinity models though From the sample I had I can’t imagine this could be used for ultra fine parts of CB sculpts as it’s not very structurally sound.
The Megalodron is made of plastic but this is more like the plastic that was used in Aristeia which I think is a PVC and holds detail ok but not as good as the new stuff but it does cut very similarly. I think this stuff from playing around with it would be ok for chunky robot parts. All you need is a miscast though and trying to cut the detail back in will take a high level of skill and experience with the material depending on the miscast. Far more than hard plastic and metal from my playing about I would say 2 or 3 times as much of a skill cap. It would be easier and cleaner to cut and re-sculpt the details back on.
The issues I have seen Corvus Belli work around and from what others have said is that they will need to change their design for the material. This is ultimately what I have an issue with. The mould makers of Corvus Belli have years of experience and they are truly masters in their craft. I already know that compromises are made between sculpt and production. From this latest batch of very public testing though it seems like they are making all those compromises and more to make the outcome more reliable.
If I was head of CB marketing I would have waited longer before coming out with this to iron out all the problems and included an actual production run sample in the next must have product. Give this for “free” to halt some of the thoughts which are much worse than my own in the infinity community just now. This could have even been a cross over for publicising an upcoming Kickstarter which I am almost 100% certain that this will use that material. You would think they would have looked at all the other companies who have changed their material and seen how it went for them.
Getting back on topic – (sorry this is so long) There will always be an option on stripping models I don’t have any parts big enough left to properly test though as I got sent a leg of a small robot looking thing which is now in less than 3mm cubes and only have Dettol (I may attempt a dump mould with the stuff if I can find and reach the temperatures). It may even just be alcohol and an ultrasonic cleaner or methylated spirits but I would 100% suggest testing this on sprues when you get them before taking the plunge on the model.
Worried is what the whole infinity community is at the moment normally it’s full of best intentions and joy. No one likes change and I am still not certain they can’t pull it off. They have the best of people with the best of skills but I think the time constraint may be the problem and if 2 years of poor quality models (even just the larger ones) comes out while they get the needed experience to get the quality right… Will the community support and pay for this very public development cycle?
Regardless you will be about to get a self contained almost all metal box of greatness. Even the not so good sculpts are still great and highly detailed and fun to paint. I think I will have a heart attack or die from my Wife slapping me when wave 2 arrives. I don’t think my lie of all of those boxes behind me will hold for much longer. I think I got 6 additional packs of models not including the expansions… So yeah I should really stop moping and continue painting, hope you get your dispatch soon!
Sorry this has been a very long response,
No problem at all on the length of your response, I appreciate your effort 🙂
It did take them a while to make their kits easier to assemble. Some of the old kits with separate antennae were pretty annoying. It also took them a while to produce easier to assemble parts and I think part of the change came from working with Chinese casters on A!. I guess I’m more hopeful their experience with products like A! will help them get this working reasonably quickly. That said I’ve not tried the material so I can’t say if it’s fundamentally flawed or less able to show some structures. Perhaps if they want something like a TAG with a sword they could cast the sword in metal and the rest in the new stuff? They still have the option to mix and match parts. Last I heard they’ll be sticking with metal casting for standard <= S2 figures and using this for remotes and bigger.
Good point on giving out some freebies though. I forget the name of the original producer of Carnevale but their Home Raiders kickstarter shipped with a figure for Fanhunter. I guess the remotes are the better choice for them to release first. Paying for a TAG cast in this material would garner some bad press if the cast is no good. It has come from out of the blue and maybe a KS campaign or a run of A! figures might have been the better way to start this. The A! alternate sculpts are quite pricy in metal so that could have been an avenue for some newer, cheaper runs.
I've seen some of the full pledge box piles for Defiance people have received and they're large! I'll have to claim I've bought some for others. Still excited for it though 🙂
Just to put some of your mind at ease. The material and process itself can hold the detail. The issue at the moment seems to be it is not 100% the same restraints that metal has and it may cause more complex parts to be split off of the main bodies.
I was not concerned about smaller models being produced in the material until I seen the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMPesJfxFs4 CB put out to try and calm down the community. if anything it made things worse in my mind. But it did show a live evolution with an already improved mould from the samples they sent out.
Mixed kits sounds good but as I researched at university when using a glue to glue materials of vastly different shore hardness is not a good option if there is being to be any flex. And while this new material can hold detail very well it’s also very bendy. This would be like putting superglue on your standard household silicone. it would just come apart when flexed after a while. This isn’t as much of a problem if they are similar in hardness (resin and metal this still happens with but they would be closer than this to metal. Unless it was changed to have a plug design so the materials are joined mechanically as well as with glue.
Yeah agree on the Aristeia! point but they cleared that up on the video above that it’s not going to happen and Aristeia! “is great as it is”. Personally not going to buy anymore plastics as the main box was ok but the last two expansions I got I sent one back and the other was horrible but I started painting before I realised. Which is a shame as the game is very fun and easy to play when you have been drinking.
You could do what I done and point one that a box is empty and just has foam in it. And that it will help keep everything nice a neat. It sort of worked for me but the box I already got was huge! I think the next one will be more of the same. Hope you plan a project for it so I can follow along been loving seeing everyone’s stuff so far!
