Dark Age Week: Re-Sculpting Miniatures For The Forsaken & Outcast
May 3, 2016 by dignity
As we know Dark Age has gone through something of a transition over the past few months and that means we've been seeing some re-sculpting of some of the factions.
In this video we're going to be looking at what changed for The Forsaken and The Outcast and why they chose this new direction.

Definately like the new resculpts over the old ones. Keep up the good work guys, look forward to seeing more updated minis in the future 🙂
Cool minis as always
Nice to see the more real world sculpts and some of the others being released are just beautiful.
Definitely like the newer versions not a fan of oversized heads & hands.
I like like the most of the new scupt has they have a more conhesive fell to it.
The new dynamic posing is awesome 🙂
Those re-sculpts are cool, really liking the dynamic poses a lot of them seem to have as well as the more realistic proportions
I want all the new models … with more dynamic poses et realistic proportions
good they resculpt everything because I would not jump in to that game seeing old stuff, new minis are mint!
Love the sculpts!
New minis = stunning 😀
Loving the new results, particularly the Coils and the Bane. Had the originals, yet these are far more sinister. Looking forward to see what they do with the Skaard and Brood
I still like a few of the old figures better than the new versions. Like the St Mark one, it think the old one still looks great
The new minis looks great, but they look a bit scary to paint with my paint style.
new sculpts definitely brings the game up to date. Looking more like a miniature game than a game with miniatures
new minis cool but fragile.
what are they sculpted in?
Most of the miniatures are cast in metal, and the larger models (like the mounts for the Saints) are cast in resin.
The newer style is so much better, realistic feel wins every time!
The Coil troops look really good, im still a bit confused on putting together a force to play with, Is there set force organization of just pile what you want in?
Its pretty open. Once you’ve chosen your faction (or subfaction) then you’ll have a list of units available to you on the faction document.
From there you can pretty much just field what units you want, though each unit will have a max number of models you can field per 500 (or sometimes 1000) points, as noted on the unit card.
A small number of units also have a prerequisite (also noted on the card) for example the Dragyri greater elementals require you to also field a soul warden.
Hope that helps.
Really looking forward to what the guys from CMON will resculpt next…
And some terrain would be cool.
I like both generations of the models, the new ones are incredibly well done technically. But part of me prefers some of the older looks, especially for the Outcast. The newer models all seem to look a bit too clean and sharp, for instance the Outcast armour just doesn’t look damaged, bent or degraded enough to be actual junk. While something niggles me about all the crisp, clean lines and perfect moulding on most of the new Forsaken equipment. Considering that this is meant to be a desolate wasteland and even new tech is meant to basically be botched together it feels a little out of place thematically to me. That said this is entirely a personal issue and part of that may be down to the paint schemes too as I’ve noticed they tend to have some quite bright highlighting on the metallics which just draws me eye to the straight edges and makes it all feel a bit to clean to me.
That said, enough griping, they’re still beautiful models anyway, they hardly detract from my personal enjoyment and I’m sure enough people love them that I can hardly complain.
Love this direction, there new sculpts look great but take advantage of the development in that area of the industry. They are not re-sculpting for re-sculpting sake, they are re-sculpting to put across this world of theirs in an even better way. Something I am really buying into at the moment
Is the mass re sculpt the reason why I cannot seem to purchase much- even from the coolminiornot web store?
I like te new sculpts alott and I just bought some outcast to use in the RPG Mutant Year zero^^
To be fair the old scultps are good tobut the reason I do not own any of them is thath I never seen them in my country (Sweden).
I really enjoy both series of models for different reasons. The old models basically get me right in the nostalgias: I started buying my own gaming materials in the late 90’s and these just hark back to that time, playing some of those other skirmish games I used to play.
The new models though look really sharp. True scale just looks so much better in comparison. I think the design is great, the faction miniatures have an aesthetic that is more cohesive.
Though… missile mace 😀
Massive difference between the Originals and the Newer sculpts, but still very true to the Image of the character/model — Great stuff!
I want the Forsaken and the Outcasts. I like how twisted is the justice of the Forsaken.
Some of the old ones look nice but the new dynamic sculpts are really cool
l like a lot the new models. I have 4 blisters (1 core, 2 outcasts, 1 forsaken) and I think they are really nice. My friends don´t want new games, but I should try it.
The new sculpts are a definite improvement. And I’m a huge proponent of true scale.
I am very much in favour of updating older sculpts to maintain a cohesive aesthetic and these new miniatures are far more dynamic than the original versions. If only Privateer Press would resculpt 90% of their older models (Mechanithralls and Bile Thralls, I’m looking at you).
Nice! I want some of those.
I see some new lovely lasses to add to my collection. 😀
I absolutely love the new stuff, the aesthetic fits better with the lore I feel, not to mention the newer models look more like the art work from the books then the old ones, keep up the good work.
Very good looking minis. I like the fluidity en motion in the new sculpts compared to the old.
Without the resculpt I don’t think I would be tempted by Dark age. But now…
The new minis look great. I really like the look of the new Orchid and Nathanial
I still think some of the older sculpts were good in comparison although going true scale is definatly better.
Those original sculpts have lots of character, and I’d be happy to field a force of those; but there’s no denying the new versions are just plain lovely!
As has been mentioned in a previous comment, it’s nice to see the respectful nods back to the original designs.
Those resculpts are amazing.
I the newer ones way better.
liking the new re-sculpts
didnt you show this clip earlier? as part of a weekender or something? or am I just going more crazy?
Much prefer the resculpts 🙂
The re-scuplts are an improvement on the old models.
Damn! Those minis are the best on the market so far. The outcast faction is the most beautiful so far. Keep on updating the others!
Superbe miniatures.
I like the more realistic proportions, but don’t lose all the zaniness of the original models.
Its crazy the difference between the old and new. One thing you can always say about CMoN is that they care about their mini quality!
The detail is really amazing, I think they even knock Corvus Belli into touch which is no mean feat!
Great improvement. Loving the nomads
the new sculpts are so much more dynamic. new over old for me by a long way
Clearly the additions are a better range of sculpts.
Do you think that people already invested in these factions will feel that the changes make it difficult to blend their old and new miniatures together?
I think with the quality on show that I wouldn’t grumble overly, because these miniatures are beautiful and nothing seems that uniform in this universe that clashes of styles would matter anyway.
How this game got past me the first time, I’ll never know…
Awesome resculpts! George Miller making a Dark Age movie would be the SHEET!!!!
The style change is massive. Like they said, the 90s was in style similar to Blizzard concept art, think Diablo 3. Which has it’s place, I like it. Personally I find that style more forgiving to paint.
You can get away with softer edges.
The new models, cleaner lines, thinner, more realistic. They really do scream out the need to be at the top of your game while painting them. They’ll look fantastic, when done really well.
I’m definitely prefering the new sculpts, but the drawback of such a significant shift in style is that I don’t feel that I could mix the different generations of model in a warband. In the long term I think it’s a good move though.
They are both cool but I wouldn’t want to mix them.
….Even though the new Sculps are Amazing, i kind of miss their BROM Feel….
Great stuff, the new models have an edge on the older in my book but for the style the old one a grand as well. Some like the mother, some the daughter. … different styles
The Saints are awesome!!!
Just been checking out the site and the DarkAge BoW pages.
St Mark mounted? What a miniature!!!
If there is a ‘bad guy’ faction in the game the Forsaken’s demands for blind obedience have got to put them high on the list, but with miniatures like that I think I can look past such trifling things.
🙂
Is it just me, but wasn’t this whirlwind sculpture shown on a Beast of War weekender a few weeks ago?
Some real nice upgrades here. Love the new aesthetic.
Can I like both.. (0_0) ?
The old models are still really good for Wastelander games.
love the new sculpts over the old ones, looking forward to see whats re-sculpted next
Its not just the sculpts that I love its the new painter they have is really making these mini pop. I have a feeling the Air Caste is going to be super fine.
For the most part, I like the resculpts and the cleaner lines that come with them though there are some parts of the old line I think should have been included like the uniform of the whirlwind.
I like the new realistic model design for the game and look forward to seeing more. I love the Mad Max meets future sciences feel to this world.
The new sculpts are some of the most gorgeous minis I think I’ve ever seen. Dark Age is looking more and more interesting.
Really love the resculpts.
CMON’s take on the design of the Dark Age minitures of late is amazing. Now, I’m not saying, that I like all of the new(er) sculpts, but even those I don’t fancy cleary show a high quality degree in conception, conposition, proportions, arrangement, atmosphere etc. (often due to quite some amount of restraint) that has to be recognized. With the odd exception now and then naturally.
I do have a soft spot for older miniature design though. And Illustration for that matter. Goofyness, winking-eye-weirdness, cartoonish exaggeration. You name it. Yet, it has to be the right mix. The older Dark Age mainly didn’t manage that for me.
Now, rarly did I see miniatures that really nail so well that play between large and small elements, plain and intricate modelled surfaces, and wide and slim forms regarding silhouettes as this new generation of Dark Age miniatures do in general. Since, let’s say, the rise of the Kukulkani. That obviously applies to the resculpts, too. As perfectly illustrted by the fresh Warwind incarnations seen in the video. Man, those capes…
Happy to see some updated sculps to liven up the game
Really happy to hear that resculpts are coming for DA. Those older starters for the Forsaken are showing their age, and the resculpt of the Warwind just blew me away with the difference.
Its crazy how newer sculpting tools and techniques could give way to such highly detailed minis. The paint jobs are bang on as well, props to CMON’s studio painters for them.
I have been utterly thrilled with the the new life they have been breathing into this line; the new sculpts and updates of the older models have been nothing short of fantastic.
Some of of the first miniatures I ever got were the original forsaken buzzsaws; I had no idea what they were, but I thought they looked really cool… haven’t seen anything locally since.
Dark Age is a game I have had my eye on for ages, the biggest store near me is apparently planning on carrying it in the near future, I’m pretty excited about that!! The only problem is now, to decide which faction(S) to dive into first.
I feel bad for the original artists when you do comparisons like this. You gotta remember that it’s more about modeling techniques and casting practices. But the the new ones do look incredible.
These minis really are impressive. Love the resculpts.
Really like many of these sculpts. Will likely grab some to paint if nothing else.
Dagnabbit I don’t want to spend more money but I really want to get into this.
The new minis are well done. But I still like the older ones. They had a certain character to them.
I am loving all of the resculpts they’ve been doing.
Sculpted and painted by big child creative? Stunning dont you think?
Really like the new sculpts and may wait for more of the range to get an update for jumping in.
Incredible difference the new stuff is so much improved
The new sculpts are fantastic! 😀
They should have said brood at the end there. If any faction needs a complete overhaul, it’s them.
Dark Age is awesome!
Awesome sculpts, really like the true proportions
Yay! Dark Age!
The new poses are a lot more dynamic.
I like the idea of the Outcast troops ‘gone fishing’.
Loving the new sculpts, a big improvement on the originals. Also liking the paint work on the newer sculpts, it`s not as colourful and bright as the older paint scheme.
Very nice sculpts!
This is lovely!
Just like Wyrd and Corvus Belli, the resculpted models are always leagues ahead of their older iteration. I really love and appreciate when companies take the time to revamp some of their older stuff as it makes it much easier to get new people into a good game when the miniature looks very nice as opposed to a bit more “dated”. Keep up the good work CMoN!
Shameless contest post.
The new sculpts are beautiful.
The old sculpts had a lot of charm. I mean, the influence of Brom on the game was fantastic, but those new sculptures… It’s a whole new level. Long life to Dark Age!
Weekends on hold to catch up watching all these lol
I think the new sculpts are looking great.
Dark Age is so cool!
Dark Age looks fun!
This was interesting!
Honestly some of the best looking minis released in recent times. Being a fan of Post Apoc I can see myself picking up a mix of them. Awesome.
Wow! This looks fantastic!
I do like the new sculpts – definitely look great and just asking for time to be spent painting this figures
It looks interesting!
Dark Age Week was cool!
I much prefer the newer style, I’m much more likely to get in on this now.
Wow, awesome!
Dark Age rox!
I got to get me some of these. Only if there was an easier way
This was excellent!
I’m absolutely amazed by Dark Age!
