Pershings & Bridge At Remagen Hit Flames Of War In June
May 31, 2014 by brennon
Flames of War has two new previews up for the month of June. Both the Bridge At Remagen sourcebook and the M26 Pershing Platoon are fired up and ready to go for World War II fun...
Bridge At Remagen covers the battles for the Rhine and charts the efforts of both the Allies and the Axis in their struggle for control. American players are presented with US armoured forces, including tank, light tank, armoured rifle, and cavalry companies. German players can field lots of powerful, heavy tanks as well as the fanatical infantry forces of SS-Panzerbrigade Westfalen.
If you'd like some tanks to take to the battlefield then why not pick up the M26 Pershing Platoon. I think these look like very cool tanks and indeed a lot more modern than some of their World War II counterparts. I guess as this was a tank used towards the end of the war it would have been a very different beast.
Are you a fan of these first June offerings?
Pershings, IS-2s, Königstigers (Tiger II)… Heavy tanks of legendary status.
It’s about time this tank was added to the game
Korea here I come…. Going to put on some MASH and game!!
You’ll need a few Centurions as well for that
Thank you @lafayette . I didn’t want to be “that guy” and talk about how much Pershings *didn’t* get to fight in World War II (March ’45, their first recorded action?). But get some T-35/85s and you’re ready for the Pusan Perimeter, Chosin Reservoir, Ichon, etc. I guess you could use the same infantry stands (Americans were still using M1s, BARs, M1919 .30 cals) . . . not sure about the Thompsons, I’ll have to look that up. Late war Soviet infantry (maybe painted differently) could fill in for North Korean and Chinese? Hear that, Battlefront? Hear it whispering to… Read more »
I’ve wondered that when the Arab Israeli stuff started coming out too. “Come on Battlefront” I said, why aren’t we doing Korea. You’ve got all the minis you need and…….oh wait, I think I just answered my question. But I think you’re right on the money oriskany. A quick TOE for each side a bit of reference material for scenarios and you’re on your way. Let me know if you come up with any special rules 🙂
I don’t know a lot about the Korean War , but I would guess the Arab Israeli War had more armoured turkey shoots meaning the players need to buy far more models for that conflict. Not that I’m cynical or anything
I’m actually churning through all five major Arab-Israeli Wars right now on a 6-month gaming/writing project (about one-third complete), using a different game system, of course. Anyway, writing and gaming in the AIW is a big thing for me. So yes, I was a little excited when I saw Battlefront was doing “Fate of a Nation.” Then I saw they were only doing the 1967 war (at least at first … crossed fingers). I was just … “Wow. You pick THAT one? Of all the ‘turkey shoots’ (like @torros mentions), you pick the worst one?” I get it, though. They… Read more »
A very nice looking kit – and I think we owe some of it to certain competitors who adopted all plastic from the get-go to persuade Battlefront to do the same. These are much neater than any resin/metal hybrid and a lot less of a pain to work with. 10/10 folks!
Couldn’t agree more, @dorthonion . Battlefront metals are still great (painting up some M3 Lees at the moment), but their plastics are at lot less trouble to work with, especially cutting off flash.
Still, it’s always fun “plunking” a metal figure down on the board, especially larger tanks. I thought about supergluing a stack of pennies into some of my plastic Mark IVs and SU-85s I was building recently to get that feeling of weight, but they wouldn’t fit. 🙁
I think about 20 Pershings saw action in WW2
There is one in Pyongyang army museum that was captured in the Korean War
Right, I know they did phenomenal … I have one account of a Pershing knocking out a Tiger and two Mark IVs in something like 45 seconds … It’s just a very small “historical sample” on which to build a FoW army. I know a lot of people aren’t that concerned with details of history, they just want to game (and that’s fine). But @lafayette ‘s idea gives us the best of both worlds.
Agreed. It might have been better to do them in a Late War Leviathans book.
But even so…
How many Ferdinans/Elefants saw action? How many Borgwards? In the Atlantic Wall book you can even select a unit of custom-made AA-tanks, used only for a short while by the 12. SS.
Point is: a low number of operational vehicles have not prevented Battlefront from adding them to the game before.
I like the sound of Korea as the models are pretty much readily available. One thing I’d like to see is more on the Cold War. Yes we have vietnam and the Arab Israeli wars. But what about the battles that “never”/”could of” happened? Love to see a game of epic proportions with Russian armoured contact groups crossing the Rhine and the Eastern sides trying to hold them up. As a tank man I’d love to see challenger and M1’s in 15mm scale done by BF.

Continuing the discussion re: Korea, I started painting a Battlefront platoon of M24 Chaffees last night, and while Googling for some reference ideas on markings, etc . . . ran across in US, UN, and even RoK markings for M24s in Korea. I’m *pretty* sure that by Vietnam, their place as the Army’s light tank had been taken by the M41 Walker Bulldog, but just one more option for using BF minis to run Korea-era games. 🙂
You’d be right there @oriskany about the bulldog. It took over the Chaffee as the main light tank. However only saw limited combat in Korea. By the time vietnam kicked off the Sheridan had taken its place. But history aside I like the bulldog model and even though it didn’t serve that aggressively I would definetly like to field a squadron of these bad lads!!
I just ordered a platoon of T26 Pershings (figuring one t26e4 and two t26s as a platoon). I agree they saw very little action at the end of the war and think they should be very limited in the army list for serious gamers or games. However, my friends and I play some pretty insane games of FOW (i.e. 3k+ games) and its about time my american army had something to stand toe to toe with his Jagdtigers. And like @torros said, it may be time for me to pick up a centurion or two…
