Not that i’m aware of this ‘hate’ of Ultramarines personally, but in any case, i wonder if part of the problem is simply that in general Space Marines don’t live up to their lore, or at least not the lore that drew me in. (I’m not keeping up these days.) They were meant to be rare elite soldiers and yet in terms of actually building an army and what they can do according to the rules that’s not the case, and further, in terms of what Games Workshop actually produce and sell they are what is actually always available at any given time. The main complaint i see about armies is that such and such an army is out of date in terms of the codex (let alone that there is only one compared to umpteen Space Marine codex) and the rules and the miniatures. It might be a case of a lot of people thinking they were coming into a game with a lot of army choices only to find that most of those are defunct or effectively unavailable and then being directed, yet again, to Ultramarines. Vanilla is a great flavour, but it’s also often the only flavour, and so it becomes a bit… vanilla.
