Just curious why 5th and not first is considered the best in this case, when the logic would dictate v1.0 was supreme and everything after it just got steadily worse?

Yarp. That’s what I thought. Also I feel that Books usually don’t get a re-write. They get sequels and translations may be done again (but than that would be a “my translation is better than yours” discussion) but in general a book stays the same (not accounting for religious books) Movies and TV shows get directors cuts, reboots, remakes or a completely different interpretation so there are arguments there but not always is a new approach inherently bad. It’s only when it’s bad it’s usually *really* bad.
