We took some time to sit down with the creators of Dark Age to take a look at the amazing map Matt Weaver has created and find out more about some of the locations that could be perfect for gaming.
Maps are an important part of game worlds as they help to bring things to life and give you a sense of wonder about 'what's over those mountains?'.

Happy Weekend!
Another great episode gents! Warren, Paizo, the makers of Pathfinder have you covered in the Goblins department. Critical Role did a one shot of Paizo’s Goblins campaign, https://youtu.be/u8MRyyFDX3c?list=PL7atuZxmT954bCkC062rKwXTvJtcqFB8i, that you can watch here. The episode is known as “To the Poop!” Paizo has an entire campaign book devoted to Goblin campaigns in Pathfinder. http://paizo.com/products/btpy98mj?Pathfinder-Goblins-Hardcover Check it out for an amazing laugh. Word of warning, do not drink anything while watching the Critical Role episode of Goblins unless you are unafraid of spit takes.
Awesome stuff! 🙂
congrats on releasing your iner game geek?@warzan and finding your glasses.
I’d got so used to a low res Ben that I thought my tablet had broken when he appeared in full screen. I considered turning my streaming down to the lowest setting to get the soft focus back.
We need the original startrek filter for him lol
lol! The close up with the light bar across the eyes
Thank you again lads. I am not a dark age player, but I do love that map. Warren is right maps are powerful and breathe life into game worlds. Nice work CMoN.. I loved Dungeon Keeper, it was a great game and yeah I can see Justin in a Cave Rave being a real goblin slapper 😉 .
and HD Ben looks slightly more loved and harder to ignore
It’s the weekend!! Although having been off work at home for a few days the only way I can tell is the arrival of the Weekender.
Maps give context. The written fluff and any art work creates the atmosphere and sets scenes – but maps pull the elements together into a more complete world.
As soon as you have a reason to be at war (i.e. landmass, resources, creating a sense of security for your people) then you know why and whers you’re fighting.
Happy weekend! Ah yes, the scene from Band of Brothers where Sgt. Martin tells the Brit tanker about the Tiger up ahead. Good times.
Table Top Tanking, now there is a line that could have gone horribly wrong haha. Great show guys looking forward to seeing you again tomorrow!
Happy Saturday and thanks for the shout out @warzan t-shirts sounds cool☺
Hello guys! Happy weekend!
The Dark Age map looks grand 🙂 Ok, of to see the BA 2nd Edition game
Enjoyed the show again lads, a nice touch with the golden buttons anther step to get more interaction between the forums and front-page stuff and of course community community community which seems to be the theme over the last couple of weeks or so, great stuff!
Goblins and team BoW FTW!!
happy weekend guys! Live infinity is nice but it is payed, no information how much yet. I live idea of golden button I am looking forward to see it expanding!
ok update on that its free to watch yesterday prelections on corvus belli youtube channel 😀 free. so only live stream is payed?
Wahooo Boot camps gimme gimmee
Two Bootcamps..?!?! Yay!!
Can’t wait to finding out what and when 😎
Have a great time off Ben!
See you all tomorrow
Really hope the two bootcamps are not for games I’m interested in. My firstborn is due in December and I’m not sure if there are enough Brownie Points in existence to get me to Ireland around then lol
You mean you are not willing to sacrifice your first born 😉
Dunno, depends on what I’m being offered…
beer and whiskey?
@avernos with you around. .. that would never happen ; )
@redben speaking as an other half, being her along 🙂 They have hospitals in N. Ireland and just think of the stories you could tell if your little one was born in the BoW studios!
Indeed. I could entertain the clerk in the divorce court with them lol
I certainly amgoing to try get to the bootcamps, need to get ahead of @rasmus … Lol
Well you never know …. But it is doubtful
you guys read my mind , team beasts of war. count me in for infinity . kilian for team captain . infinity live stream bostria seminar last night along with the angel and luxumbra seminar were amazing. lots of news, a few more ideas on the table from corvus belli . 15mm infinity game ,Acheron blockade starship game and talk of a linked campaign between these two along with the standard game. can we have a thread if you guys have time or do you want the community to throw one up?
great stuff from cmon ,they really are pushing darkage on to a new level . i’m glad to see cmon strutting their stuff here on beasts of war. the map is a winner .
bootcamps , you have my attention.
Really keen to hear about the boot camp, the games involed will make or break my decision but this might be a chance to take the plunge.
Konflikt 47, BA2 or Dropfleet Commander would be my favourites.
Among (many) others..doh..can’t wait to find out!
Had to pause this week’s weekender 7 minutes in to say a big WOOHOO to Team Beasts of War!
I’ve taken part (can’t really say ‘contriibuted’ much) to the BoW team in the last Dropzone Commander Invasion (or two?) but I can’t go this time. Not that my lack of presence is going to be anywhere near as damaging as missing @rasmus !
So if you can get together 1500 points of a DZC army by mid-september, do please go and get in touch with @commodorerob . Even if you’ve not played before, it’s a very welcoming game and very relaxed tournament (at least at the bottom tables that I have experience of!).
But I think the idea of BoW Teams more generally is a great idea.
And I’ll be back for the DXC Winter Invasion.
Or even the DZC Winter Invasion…
@angelicdespot certainly hope to see you back in the team in January 🙂
Invasion is certainly for beginners and veteran players so don’t feel put off by it.
Yeah, I’m gutted to be missing it this time.
Looking forward to Coastal Assault in Brighton next week though!
So @commodorerob flying the flag all alone ? Send me a flight ticket and i’ll join you
Well @warzan was talking sponsorship deals
Sorry @seldon9 I should read the show notes as well ..
I’ve not been particularly interested in Dark Age before, although they do have some great miniatures, but the map really gets my attention. I love maps even when they’re nothing to do with gaming, but they do add so much to SF and fantasy game worlds.
They say a picture is equivalent to a thousand words. A map can be worth at least as many again!
Another great episode. I would love to get involved in a Flames of War team based in the UK if one comes up. Gives me an excuse to build a new army. 🙂
Not sure if someone has already said this, but I think the scene that John and Justin are photoshopped on for the BA Mark 2 game is from Band of Brothers, episode 4 “Replacements” when Easy Company are in Neunen during Operation Market-Garden. Sgt. Martin (played by John) runs up to a British Cromwell and tells the tank commander (played by Justin) of a hidden tank. I think I need to get a life if I can tell the scene by a photoshopped image. 😛
Great show guys! Looking forward to the BS version tomorrow. 🙂
@warzan @brennon thanks for the shoutout guys, and you’re right Warren, my bass is now in dire need of strings lol.
The sacrifices we all make to make kick-ass models for our hobby. 🙂
And a little plog from the first time we did go to Invasion after the Dropzone commander bootcamp
http://www.beastsofwar.com/eventslist/dropzone-invasion-bow-team-live-blog/
Might help any one that are on the fence about going
Deluxe Paint was cool. Loved the Tutankhamun death mask on the cover.
Dark Age looked cool when I checked it out on the special week, but I already have too many games on the go. Might get into post apocalypse stuff one day.
Ben in HD does make the whole show look higher value (not that it was a massive issue before). Not easy during opinionated discussion to make a point on a topic when you’re competing with lag.
Can’t wait to see what the boot camps are this time around.
Incidentally, when will we see Frostgrave or Saga articles (beyond the welcome occasional release updates). I know there are lots of sites doing Frostgrave playthroughs really well, but Saga is not getting the attention it deserves from anyone really. By the way Justin’s shield painting on his Saga warband some months ago was awesome.
See you tomorrow.
Happy wargaming
I want a posthumous golden button for my skaven scratch build 🙁 🙁 waaahhhhh
A DFC bootcamp would be awesome.
That is the one thing that might get me transalatic. ..
Good episode. Any chance you guys can put a link to a large version of the map? Not having any luck finding it so far. It looks fantastic and you guys nailed it that this is a fantastic addition to Dark Age.
Hi soinull, Dave from CMON here. We’ll be putting some wallpapers of the map up on the Dark Age site next week, and hope to start work on a cool interactive piece soon. We just couldn’t wait to show it off : )
Fair enough. It looks fantastic and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it. Amazing how something relatively simple like a map really helps to tie the world and fiction together.
I collect Kukulkani and Core so this revved me up enough to go purchase the mini’s I hadn’t gotten yet from each faction. I really enjoyed the Kukulkani step-by-step you did recently on the Dark Age website.
Hi soinull, the wallpapers are now up on the site : )
http://dark-age.com/2508-2/
Thanks Dave! I was gobsmacked when the link rolled in, it’s so cool to see people being excited over the map!- Matt
Dungeon Keeper! Now there’s a flashback…. hmm…still have it…. somewhere…
Another great show. The button idea seems like a good one.
I absolutely love you guys going over the community picks! I think how you guys have been going over community comments and what they are doing, I just love that stuff 😀
Best of luck to the BoW DZC team! Smash your enemies in the name of Beasts of War! Crush them! Drive them into utter submission! Do not show the slightest pity or mercy! 😀 😀 😀
And I’m just gonna check, I know the team probably can’t offer a definitive answer at this point, but . . .
Earlier there was talk of a Bootcamp or a Bootcamp-style event for “Operation Zeus.”
Just wondering if this was still in cards. 😀 😀 😀
Yes and op zeus will only take place at a time to accomodate your good self mate, so if its delayed, that will only make it more awesome.
It’s always sounds funny when Warren invites backstagers to Ireland too enjoy some craic with the BoW crew. 😉
LOL 🙂
Bootcamps!!! Because of work, december is out but, depending on the november one, it could happen…
That Dark Age map is great and the Golden Buttons are a great idea.
See you tomorow
Weekender! Ben is looking glorious in HD, finally he got the upgrade he deserves!
If I lived in the UK I imagine being part of a Beasts of War wargaming team would be a blast. I do hope this is a happening thing and I am sure any BoW team would be in the top 10. How could you lose with @warzan and Co. cheering you on from the cheap seats! 😀
I am loving the new Readers Comments section of Weekender, it highlights a lot of topical conversation and varied perspectives of community members. Have to say I am also a big fan of the minis posted by @dogma2097 – well deserving of the ‘Golden Button’ – as are the community members. 🙂
Darn Dark Age looking so flavorsome and interesting – one day…
As always The Weekender never feels long enough but of course you lads need to do all those other amazing things you do for this wonderful website. I look forward to the Weekenders (both Front and Back stage) and catching up with your now oh so familiar faces. It is always makes me smile and provides a renewed enthusiasm to make more time to enjoy my hobby among my friends. Gold, pure gold. 🙂
Team BoW for Dropzone commander, so far managed to almost avoid the top 10, I did finish 8th at the last Invasion. And we did never get the wooden spoon. But more importantly we had a great time. I would love to go but, there is the little things of an ocean that need to be crossed …
Always a big thumbs ups for avoiding the wooden spoon 🙂
Some of _only just_ managed to avoid the wooden spoon, ahem…
Great weekender guys, love the Dark Age map would make a great campaign map for any game I think and the game itself sounds great. Justin is the BOW goblin?
Happy Weekend!
That map looks extremely tempting, Why Must you taunt me so, my poor wallet can only take so much, must exercise self-control.
Speaking of maps there was a time when the first thing I would do if I got a new book was to check if it had a map accompanying the story, maps give context to the world’s stories and inspire the creation of new ones.
Bootcamps? Yes please especially if DFC and Konflict47/BA2 are possible.
Another awesome show. And have a good Holyday Holly…Er I mean Ben 😉
So my squadron is based in croyders… And really interested to play drop zone. …
At what point do we get bow team colours?
Team colours are not yet decided. But if you are interested i will PM you
The best thing about HeroQuest is… the goblins!! 🙂
Wow! Thanks to Dave and Bryan for the Shout-out on the Dark Age Map that I worked on, I didn’t expect the Beasts of War would cover it as positively as they did! very humbled over it all!

That Dark Age map has more skulls than the original Talisman board, love it!
It’d be awesome to get a version of that printed out onto a piece of fabric and tatter the edges a little.
There is a great novel by Drew Hayes called NPCs. It has in it the story of a minion and the life thereof. I figure @warzan may not find it as much fun but still a fun romp through the dungeon.
Cheers guys, it’s so cool being up on the Weekender – (it’s Dogma-Twenty-Ninety-Seven BTW, like how you’d pronounce a year) – I’ve got a golden ticket!
The undead were for Frostgrave random encounters (most of my current stuff is for Frostgrave and/or Dragon Rampant, but have some other things cooking) – may expand them into something a bit more army-like. Obvious add-ons are gonna be a small gremlin looking servant, a couple of wyverns, a trio of witches and some big thugs with mastiffs…
To Commander Rob,
Hi Rob,
I battle(or slaughtered is more acuratly 😉 ) you last year at Invasion, after we had dinner with you and Rasmus at the noodle shop.
My Battle buddy isnt joining in, so i would love to join you as Team BoW.
Cheers, Michel
I blame Labyrinth for the Goblin party thing…
I think the U.S. Hero-Quest had elements of role-play narrative in the Quest missions. That’s why the H-Q novels had little vignette descriptions in their solo quests. The Barbarian Quest said the goblins played ‘knucklebones’ and cooked ‘heart-soup’ for the orcs….
that map would look great as a pair whit my D&d map
Nice show. Finally I am back. Almost two months kids vacation. So almost no time to watch the show. But great to be back. Love shows around a hour with lots of information.
I am very interested in Bolt Action 2.0. I have read the rules of verion 1.0, but I have to say I wasn’t very keen on it. I hope they will fix it in 2.0. I hope to see less special rules, faster games and lots and lots of action.
And of course I like the Goblin RPG. Yes I am a cave party boy. Always love the looks of goblins since Heroquest. Goblins have to be full of fun character, nothing serious or ‘realism’ to be found around them. Some developers don’t understand what goblins are, but this kickstarter knows.
Well, if you ever feel like awarding a golden button award to someone that likes sculpting their own wargame 😉
Looking forward to boot camp news. Also the changes to Bolt Action all seem to improve an already great game
Always wanted to get into Bolt action so that’d be the perfect opportunity if i were to win!
