New Episode VII Star Wars X-Wing Spotted On Set!

Ok so it isn't really so much a sneaky peek at what's going on on set but actually a reveal via a new video from J.J. Abrams which you can check out above. The star of the video however is the Episode VII X-Wing design!
Some speculation as to what exactly it is was bound to spring up and while a lot of people were saying it was a Z-95 the folks behind Star Wars have said it's simply an 'Episode VII X-Wing' and not the Headhunter craft.
There is plenty more going on anyway despite what the Star Wars team say and it could be an entirely new craft with a different designation. Or, just an X-Wing. Either way I'm sure Fantasy Flight Games will sort it out when they release it!
What's your take on it?
That X-Wing looks like Jedi X-Wing from New Jedi Order books.
Assuming there have been no major conflicts between the end of RoTJ and EP VII it would make sense to me that there were still be a few X-Wings and (even fewer) Z95s in service. It is interesting that this craft appears to be (based upon) one of the variants that have popped up in the EU though.. so perhaps Disney aren’t so much scrapping it as.. cannibalising it.
A Z95T perhaps, but it doesn’t have the same engine configuration at the back..

Tbh I always assumed that’s what they were going to do. Cannibalising allows them to keep the cool things about the EU but avoid the rubbish (I’m looking at you Yuuzhan Vong!).
The more i see from the set though the more excited I get for this 🙂
He must be absolutely buzzin his beans off making these new movies and getting to see all the tech and actors / characters realized again. Swap jobs with me JJ!
I loved how that fighter looked like it was just dragged out of a recycling yard. Now THAT’S Star Wars. Not the new, shiny, CGI-perfect cartoony material they presented in the prequels. I know they were going for a “this is how pretty the universe looked before everything went to hell” but it just came off as cheap and cardboard. I can only hope this is a positive sign that JJ is listening to the fans, paying attention to what people actually like about the franchise, and delivering some great new chapters. And the little Death Star “floor droid” was… Read more »
Everything in the new movies looks f*cked from what I’ve heard.
There’s no Republic, the destruction of the Empire did more harm than good. Luke is screwed. Everything is horrible.
Which would explain why that X-Wing looks like the worn out rust buckets of the Original Trilogy.
If they’ve actually done this, then that takes some pretty big balls and completely changes the ending of Return of the Jedi to tragedy.
I really do hope they got rid of the bloody hidden/in your face politics that the last 3 movies was over run with. If they do get rid of the Republic and the Empire it can go back to being about the people on screen and less about trade blockades.
It might be shocking to you but those politics were one of those rare things that I liked in prequal trilogy besides of battles in episodes II and III.
It will be interesting to see if they have New Republic formed during new trilogy and maybe have them capture Corusant from remnants of the Empire.
agreed. it was very nuanced. palpatine never lies about the Jedi the *were* trying to take over technically.
I want one of those for the office car park.
I love that ship.
An advanced x-wing that looks like it has been flying for decades.
Also love the plot if it is real.
Heh, same here to be honest. I won’t go full fanboy (you never go full fanboy, everybody knows that!) but neither my soul nor my childhood were crushed by the prequel trilogy. In fact – and IMHO of course – when you consider the two constraints: 1) It was going to be set during the Clone Wars 2) Every piece of EU content that predated EP IV timeline, particularly KOTOR ..the three films were actually pretty good. Sure, Phantom Meanace was the weakest of the three and all suffered from some pacing, balance, script and casting issues.. but that just… Read more »
Also I love the fact that CIS were basically the beta version of the Rebellion. At the end of EP 3, the parts of the CIS that survived the war and didn’t get subsumed into the Empire either scuttled off to hide under their rocks in the Outer Rim (to become the ‘Fringe’ elements later on) or they went in to hiding.. and it isn’t difficult to imagine them forming the core part of the Rebellion during the early days of the Galactic Civil War era.
My understanding is it’s based more on Ralph McQuarrie’s original X-Wing concept. It’s little nods like this towards Star Wars original heritage that really impresses me with the way Abrams is going about his business.
