Pre-orders are now up for a new expansion to Hail Caesar alongside a selection of miniatures to sit alongside sit. Warlord Games will be finding out about Rome's Conquest of the East in a new book that will be available later in May.

Romes Conquest Of The East - Warlord Games

Rome's Conquest of the East // Warlord Games

This book gives you everything you need for wargaming the Mithridatic Wars of 88-63 BC. The book contains a wealth of historical background on the period and Mithridates VI, ruler of Pontus. You'll find out all about his struggle against the Romans and their plans to dominate Asia and the Hellenistic world.

There are a staggering seventy scenarios included in the book, covering all three of the Mithridatic Wars from start to finish. The scenarios cover skirmishes, pitched battles and grand sieges, so you've got a mixture of different options, starting with smaller armies through to much larger ones. A good hobby journey to start on.

You'll also find full army lists for running the armies of Rome and Pontus, plus special rules that will give battles a unique feel. Scenarios could be played on their own or as part of a campaign if you prefer breaking the map out.

There is also a special miniature for this book (as is often the case with Warlord games), Young Caesar. This showcases the mighty Julius Caesar early in his career when he was making his name as a staff officer. Maybe this could begin a new campaign where you follow his exploits throughout his career.

Legendary Leaders

As well as the book, you can also get some miniatures. If you're going to be siding with the Romans, then you can get Lucius Cornelius Sulla & Gaius Marius.

Lucius Cornelius Sulla & Gaius Marius // Warlord Games

Both of these men were powerful and shrewd politicians, diplomats and military commanders. They were ruthless in pursuing Rome's aims and the miniatures here depict these men mounted and armoured for war. Full rules for both characters will be included in the new book so you can slot them into all manner of battles.

On the other side of things, you can check out Mithridates VI, Eupator King of Pontus.

Mithridates VI Eupator King of Pontus - Warlord Games

Mithridates VI, Eupator King of Pontus // Warlord Games

He was one of Rome's primary protagonists during the period and resisted the empire's expansion. He was an equal to Rome's commanders and when he united his neighbours under one banner, he was able to drive Rome back across the Adriatic. This miniature represents Mithridates as a commander with his spear raised, ready to crash into battle with the Romans. I'm not sure on the face of this particular sculpt when compared to some of the other options we've seen from Warlord of late but each to their own.

Two army deals are also available for you to choose from, once again covering the Romans and the army of Pontus.

Marius Mules - Warlord Games

Marius' Mules // Warlord Games

Glory of Pontus - Warlord Games

Glory of Pontus // Warlord Games

The Roman force contains...

  • Roman Generals Lucius Cornelius Sulla & Gaius Marius
  • Late Republican Starter Army
  • Ancient Celts: Cavalry Boxed Set
  • Early Imperial Romans: Balearic Slingers Regiment
  • Caesarian Roman Onager

On the other side, you have the Glory of Pontus which contains...

  • Mithridates VI Eupator, King of Pontus
  • Macedonians: Phalangites
  • Sarmatian Cataphracts
  • Celtic Warriors
  • Parthian Horse Archers

You can pre-order both of these and use them as the basis of your armies for all of those scenarios presented as part of the new book. I quite like the idea of playing as Pontus so you could stick it to the Romans and see how far you could curtail their advances and ambitions.
