Every company seems to have their own version of a speed paint for fast results on your miniatures and Vallejo is no exception, last year they released a whole new reworking of their Model Color range of acrylics including twenty-four Xpress paints and now they have returned to the range with thirty-six new colours to bring it to a substantial sixty Xpress paints and filling a lot of the gaps.

There are two notable features of this expanded range of Xpress paints. The first is the addition of a selection of military colours that would be appropriate for World War II players, so now British, Russian, Japanese, and even German uniform colours are available. There is even a Khaki drill that would do for North Africa quite handly, while they may not be bang on accurate they're definitely close enough if you are looking to get a tabletop-ready army in short order and at the end of the day that is what most of us are using these for.

The second is a sub-division of Xpress paints called Intense, as you can see from the examples above they are ideal for Warhammer 40,000 players as they are over saturated and highly pigmented colours but still offer a great contrast and definition when dry.

Juan Hidalgo has spent a lot of time working with Vallejo to choose the colours for this range and he has put together a comprehensive video talking through the choices and showing how they go down on a miniature, he's a big proponent of using these types of paints as a basis for higher level paint jobs and being allowed to help choose the colours means he believes that whatever you plan on using them for you should be covered now.

I've used five different companies' versions of these styles of paints now and as far as a one-and-done paint job goes Xpress stands at the very top for me for a matt finish and coverage, expanding the range now to sixty colours isn't going to hurt and giving more choice should help more people get their toys painted and out playing games sooner.

What do you make of the Xpress Range?
