On The Table s6 ep9: Mega-Awesome Christmas Episode!
December 20, 2013 by warzan
In This Episode
It's that time of year again when the nights get longer and we have to stay indoors because of the terrible weather. That does mean however that we get to play loads more tabletop games!
In this seasonal episode we'll be taking a look at some epic games for the winter months including the aptly named Winter Tales from Fantasy Flight Games and the 'Winter's Comin' meme generator A Game of Thrones: The Board Game.
As well as that we have the frantic Space Cadets which is loads of fun and keeping that star spanning theme, Firestorm Armada from Spartan Games. Let's not forget an Advent packed with Dropzone Commander too!
Oh and some of you might have seen another film in The Hobbit franchise come out last week? Well, Games Workshop have been showing off their sparkly models for The Desolation of Smaug.
We wouldn't be complete without a regular look at two Kickstarters we think are worth a look in.

Ready to win! Always wanted to play this game…
From facebook: Why yes, I do fancy winning a great boardgame.
I’ve played as weapons control several times in Space Cadets and BoW Brennon knows I am so damn awesome at it. *Turns his hand into a gun, and blows on the end of the barrel*
Cannot recommend Space Cadets enough, not one of my games of 2013, but for party atmosphere and group communication, it’s up there
It does sound like quite a fun game. 🙂
Really like to have a go at Dropzone Commander.Reminds me of the Epic 40k I use to play with in my youth. 🙂
Gimme gimme gimme…me want Crimbo pressie goodness!
What am I looking out for? Hanakai Studios. ‘Nuff Said.
Great episode as always!
Not a bad On the table, but way too short, it should be longer we want more XD
I want me some Game Of Thrones
Some nice looking games. Keep being tempted by Dropship Commander. Have played Space Cadets, and it is a great co-op game. The mini games for each station are a lot of fun.
And strangely enough I’d like to win a great boardgame as well. Merry Christmas Beasts of War and best of luck for the coming year.
Still have the Hobbit to see. Also have The worlds end on dvd to watch. Probably watch some Star wars to set the scene for some games of X wing. Games and movies for me at Christmas and not forgetting our family favourite Dr Who xmas special.
Space Cadets looks very interesting, I will look into it, thanks.
My shelves are always in need of another game 🙂
That Gorgos looks amazing.
Humbug.
a another super fine show
Twelve elements of war is great, I’m happy I’m backing this!
It has never occurred to me before how lewd the wobbling arrow over a couple of spheres looks. Sorry if that ruins it for others… cannot unsee?
I think the Hobbit game is a little more than “a bit on the pricey side”. $25 American for a single plastic 28mm model. Enough said.
Dropzone is so tempting…many people in my group want to play it but are held back currently by cost. I’m sure one day one of us will give in and that will create an avalanche of sudden sales for Hawk Wargames. I’m currently good right now trying to pad out all of the games I’ve already gotten into this year but there is always next year.
Would love to try some Spartan games as well. The smaller scale (mini size, not battle size) games are slowly becoming more appealing to me, if for no other reason that I play plenty of 28 – 32mm games already.
I’m backing Twelve Elements and would recommend people check it out. The creator is very active in the comments and has given some basic game mechanics demos as well as demo characters to get the feel of the game. It feels like a quick, bloody skirmish game with easy game mechanics. And it goes on until Jan 14th, just in time for many of us to recover from holiday shopping.
Best whishes from holland.
Another Great episode guys, I really love seeing all the new boardgames. So much more variety then when I was a kid, I mean we had a few war and role playing but you could only get certain people to play those but boardgames you could get family or other friends to play. I remember the coolest board games we had was Risk, Stratego, and that one person I knew with Axis and Allies and Fortress America but he would never play them and wouldn’t let anyone borrow them either. Lol, guess I had been holding on to that for awhile now.
I need that Tohaa Tag, that thing is sweet.
low the look of duel fighters, nice big models for all kinds of painting fun and a reasonable price considering the size of the models. think i’ll throw some money that way
Happy X-mas!
The duel fighters mini’s look great but I’m not sold on the whole giving orders at the same time and possibly having your guys run off in opposite directions. I might be misunderstanding it but the way you decide what your fighter is going to do seems strange to me.
Besides, I have my money all tied up in Twelve Elements of War. Looks to be much more my type of game.
Don’t know if this vid is going to help Duel Fighters. ( Although it’s publicity so who knows. )
It’s been hemorrhaging backers and money for the last few days. It’s just not worth the money for what you get and the game mechanics look boring as hell.
I like the look of Space Cadets. There’s a lot of potential for bringing non-gaming nerds to the dark side.
hobbit 2 good? when I as , When? it is rubbish movie do not waste your time and money for that movie guys!
Would love to win something, it would be a fine crowning to an otherwise humbug year 😛
Merry Christmas!
We need a new word for Warren other then Epic 😛
Woohoo! Loving the Gorgos exclusive. 🙂 Nicely done guys.
GORGOS!!! Sooo nice. I’m now sure I want my next army to be the Tohaa..
Merry Xmas. I’m definatly gonna spend 2014 playing more games and getting out of my painting cave.
Hi, Guy’s,
Thanks for another great video , but one thing……. I love and hate youre video at the same time cause you cpsting me a lot of money!!! Fisrt i have discover Infinity cause of you and one of my favorite faction is the Tohaa so i think i can not resist at the new huge mine that will come out soon and also you have made me spend hundreds of dollars on Kikstarter but youre show is still great so ill continue to spend money….. I think !
Ps: can you tell me how many times you have change youre TShirt in that Video ? 😉
So i wish you an happy christmas Time to all of the beast of wars Guy .
My local gamestore was talking up Space Cadets the other day. Nice to see it on BoW. I picked up Gloom after your weekender.
May have to look into Duel Fighters too.
Add my name to the list of folks hoping to win!
This game looks like tons of fun, and I would love to get my hands on it for Christmas!
As always, good show. I would have liked to see a year in review from BoW, but that might be better suited to a Weekender.
Another good episode, highlights what great variety exists in the world of the gamer!
I highly recommend Game of Thrones, its one of my favourite boardgame: Full of tactical decisions, politics, diplomacies, and backstabbing. The initial position for each house in the game itself is not balanced, but that is one of the most interesting thing in the game: each house plays differently.
The starting positions are perfectly balanced if you have all five players, they are just plain wrong if you have less than that as the first to go is Martell which gives an immediate advantage to Lannister and Baratheon with all the extra territory at the bottom.
It is a fun game but suffers from the usual multiplayer problems; everyone turtles, and anyone who has balls and tries to play the game and expand and be aggressive gets gangbanged early; which just leads to more turtling and mounting of armies.
You mean six players? Starks, Lannisters, Greyjoys, Baratheon, Martell, and Tyrell?
I think I’m using the wrong word: I mean the initial positioning is not mirroring each other, hence each house will play differently. They are balanced to one another, but not using the same kind of resources in achieving that balance.
The initial positioning of the houses favors house Baratheon early on: You have a direct access to grab three different castles: Storms End, Crackclaw Point, and King’s Landing. You can even grab the delicious king’s Landing on your first turn:
However, going too aggressive early on will have a bad impact to your game in the long run because you will be ganged (king-making) by the other players quickly.
The Starks have the perfect position to turtle up early game by using Moat Cailin as a choke-point, then starting from turn 6 or 7, they should have enough power token to grab good positions in the tracks and becoming an unstoppable force.
The Greyjoys and Lannisters are IMHO the most difficult ones to win, usually they fight each other early on, then stuck on Riverrun. In my experience, the best solution for both houses would be creating a treaty: Let the Greyjoys attack the Starks and the Lannisters attack the Baratheons. Otherwise, they’ll be crushed between these two powerhouses in late game.
So you see, each house plays differently and each have a unique characteristics due to their positioning. However, I also agree that to get the most of the game you need the right kind of crowd. The game is best played with people who have played it before: it takes a few games before everyone starts understand each house’s role in the game and who to ally with.
A nice Christmas edition. All that was missing was Santa himself. Dropzone Commander is going from strength to strength – great looking models coming up.
Great show……Really want to comment on three of the games. Firestorm Armada…..all Spartan games are some of my favourite systems…and the re-boot’ of Firestorm Armada is really interesting. The latest version of the rules have some exciting changes that streamline the game…enough changes to make the ‘re-boot’ worth doing…but not too many to put ‘old school players’ off…..great new models…and of course, all the older models are still usable. Top marks to Spartan.
Dropzone…..one of the best games I’ve found in recent years…not played it enough…but plan to get more into it in 2014 as We now have more players interested at our club. Stunning miniatures both old and new…well worth looking into.
Infinity…..One of the most involving ‘hard Sci-fi’ skirmish games around that continues to go from strength to strength. Fantastic miniatures……committed to playing a lot more in 2014.
Keep up the good work guys…..have a Happy Christmas one and all….and may your stocking over flow with toy soldiers!
Happy Christmas to all of you, too. Space Cadets looks interessting, maybe Ill pick it up.
Happy Christmas and a great 2014 BOW
By the way, X-Wing big ships have appeared for preorder – releasing April 2014!
So many games, so little money…
Looks great I’ll give it a go.
Of that lot I think the dropzone stuff catches my eye the most, overall, thowever his is the christmas of deadzone in my house though.
Needless to say another awesome episode Warren, thanks.
The things to look forward to for 2014 are the monthly releases for WWX and Infinity, Robotech RPG and ofc our Deadzone campaign due to start in January. 🙂 ofc Rivet wars and AvP will be nice to get hold of too. Also wanting to get a club going for Bolt Action, flames of war and other historicals….. so 2014 should be a good one. 😀
space cadets looks superb
A very nice selection of game pity i have already blown my Christmas budget.
Thanks for another good video, and look previews and reviews as well. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a great start to 2014!
Another awesome show guys!
Yea! I’m off for Christmas. Be able to catch up on all those videos I missed
The dwarves in barrels minis should have a pretty steep movement penalty.
C’mon red shirted away team member!
City of remnants looks fun.
Merry Christmas to you all.
Great episode. I’ll be enjoying my Deadzone bundle the holiday.
Plaid Hat Games & Beasts of War: A Gruesome Twosome.
I love to see all the new games, I’m trying to get ideas of games to play…keep up the great work
City of Remnants is the BOMB! Amazing asymmetric gameplay.
Merry christmas to all and a happy 2014 gaming
I hope some of the new Dropzone Commander models in 2014 will be made in plastic. The starter set features lovely sculpts, and this would really bring the price down.
happy holidays guys!!!
very cool suggestions thx.
Saw the Desolation of Smaug and absolutely loved it. Wouldn’t mind picking some of GW’s new hobbit minis but man are the prices steep 🙁
Well, the game looks interesting and I’m going to be an optimist here. Good luck everyone!
Have I ever told you, that you’re great?
Happy winter solice! 😀
This video really got me interested in City of Remnants Looks like really fun game. Might pick it up if i don’t win lol. This may be a bit early but Merry Christmas everybody
I liked the episode, keep it up.
Merry Christmas!
Warren, you sure know how to own the screen, have you considered the silver screen???
I’ve only just discovered Game of Thrones (I know, I’ve come very late to the party!) – I’ve seen the first season & read the first three books… If the board game progresses along the timeline of the story will it ruin it for me….?
Infinity is still looking good, and the game of thrones is also something to be spending vouchers on!
Love to win something!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Came across your channel from Geek and Sundry, great episode to watch.
City of Remnants looks like a great game !
