About the Project

As a break from other armies I decided to start painting Genestealer Cults. As a bit of background I’m new ish to the hobby. I played when it was fifth (my first army was Tau) and had a break for 15 years. During lockdown I started to paint again; as I’ve progressed over the last two years I finally feel I’m able to show some of my projects that I’ve been working on. I’ll include images of my progress and try and include detail of what I’ve done!

I hate batch painting; I’ve mentioned it previously before but as a New Years resolution I’ve decided to dive headfirst into the challenge.

Included are a few images showing the process of firstly painting the clothes of my Neophytes from the ShadowThrone box and then the skin.

Although not photographed the effect on the armour was created with Wraithbone then dry brushed white scar white and finally a wash of Agrax Earthshade.

Firstly I painted the clothes orange fire , then heavy dry brushed sun yellow, then light dry brushed daemonic yellow. Then repeated 10 times. Firstly I painted the clothes orange fire , then heavy dry brushed sun yellow, then light dry brushed daemonic yellow. Then repeated 10 times.

Short update today; finished off the two familiars from the Shadow Throne box.

I feel like I’m finally getting in the swing of creating the Jungle theme!

I tried something new on the familiars back! Firstly dry brushing brown, then putting dots of white scar, wraith bone, corax white, mournfang brown, black, then a thinner dry brush of black near the centre of their back and then finally a highlight with Wraithbone!

It created what I think is a natural insect- like pattern!

Inspiration from seeing a post today I think their inspiration was “Catgut”.

Now I’m away to drink some whiskey and ring in the New Year with my partner! Have a good one folks!

Look at that pattern! Look at that pattern!

I spent the day creating bases for the rest of my Shadow Throne box.

This process as usual involved using Green stuff, real twigs, cork, aquarium plants and gravel to achieve the desired effect.

I then primed black and highlighted white.

I often take pictures during the process of glueing the bases to make sure I’ve got enough space to complete my plan and that each model fits perfectly.

With all the models now glued I’m excited to start painting and use one of my stocking presents

Patriarch with Fluorescent paint Patriarch with Fluorescent paint
Patriarch finishedPatriarch finished

Well he’s finally finished!

My Patriarch and the first model painted from the Shadow Throne box.

Using Uv Resin and white Fluorescent paint had to be the most challenging part of this model!

I created a wash with the fluorescent paint on his brain to get into the nooks and crannies and dry brushed the fluorescent paint on his talons and eyes.

UV resin was applied to the tongue in layers and the brain; I didn’t want it to look matte and wanted the effect to feel like an aura.

Even though I’m sure I could’ve achieved better work using both I’m very happy with the end result and love the ethereal nature of this model. I love how it tells a story; a Patriarch kept underground it’s body drained from sunlight and becoming void of colour, adapting to the dark and even showing signs of a creature that can function in extreme conditions; finally emerging onto the jungle floor.

Tonight’s project has seen me try to imagine something that was in my head.

So the Patriarch is an amazing model, but the base wouldn’t fit in with my Jungle theme. After some thought I decided to green stuff the pipe and turn it into a tree trunk. Using actual branches and green stuff I began covering the pipe until I was happy with the amount of green stuff on it. Then using a pencil I drew heavily in the green stuff giving the impression of bark. Finally I glued aquarium plants onto the tree and neatened up the lines and put down some boulders (cork).

I’ll wait for this to dry and then add more gravel before priming!

I love the Saboteur modelI love the Saboteur model

Today was spent doing a lot of prep to begin the Shadow throne box.

This process (for me) involves cutting sprues with my trusty craft knife, neatening sprues with an emery board, plastic glueing the parts together and then using the emery board to neaten the base and finally superglue the model onto my secret ingredient; KEBAB STICKS!

I glue them onto kebab sticks so I can prime black then highlight white with loads of control individually.

I’ve left the big boy as a special project with green stuff to match my jungle/ swamp theme!

The Primus, Magnus, Familiars and Saboteur are set up as outlined in the instructions.

The ten neophyte hybrids have been set up with 6 autoguns, cult icon, flamer, grenade launcher, two mining lasers (er with one mining laser and the other seismic canon)

All really easy to build but as a minor grievance why not put two of each heavy weapon option on the sprue?!

Keep your eyes peeled for the next update when I have a good at realising my idea for the Patriarch.

A very excited Shay! A very excited Shay!
How cool is this artwork? How cool is this artwork?
Sharing out the box! Sharing out the box!

A review of the Shadow Throne box.

So today something very special happened!

I think most people consider Warhammer and other war games a very insular hobby. You buy, paint and collect by yourself. The only social element for a lot from an outsiders perspective is when games happen.

However that being said; anytime I go in I normally end up having a social element with talking to the person in the shop, posting on forums, talking to my friends about progress I’m making and talking about what I plan to achieve next!!

Shay messaged me about the Genestealers/ Custodes box and the actual great value that a spilt would be! Straight away we organised and waiting somewhat patiently… ahem not that we kept messaging each other getting hyped about it.

As value goes;

The Broodcoven works out at £37.50, the Neophyte Hybrids £27.50 and the Reductus Saboteur (I’m guessing from other elites) £17.50. With £50 spent I feel like I’ve essentially got £32.50 for free!? He also seemed to be very happy with the value of his half!

It arrived today and Shay messaged 5 minutes before the shop opened asking me when I’d be down to open it together! I think he was as excited as me.

Can we also pause and talk about how amazing the artwork looks!

What I’m looking forward to;

The model I’m looking forward to most is the new Reductus Saboteur; I love how cool it looks, and as you’ve seen I really love a quirky elite.

I’m still debating how to lay out the Neophyte Hybrids and have some great ideas for the conversions I’d like to include in the Broodcoven!

Future plans;

Shay also said about putting on a battle report playing the two halves of the box against each other on a table?! How would you feel about that? Also any suggestions for the layout of Neophytes would be greatly appreciated!

I’m looking forward to posting picks of the progress as I make and complete this box.

But y’know the devils got your number

Had a bit of fun with this weeks newest project. With a quote from Brood I mean…. Blood Brothers.

Beginning my squad with the sergeant who is an OOP Kasrkin Cadian model.

The process of this began with filing and cutting away the imperial markings (I know heresy) then applying a green stuff mound on his forehead.

I then primed and highlighted the model.

When I bought this model on eBay it didn’t come with a backpack so I bought a cadian backpack and two genestealer arms with the little genestealer insignia on them. I plan to cut this off and replace the imperial badge with this on his breast plate and backpack.

I decided to go with a white colour scheme to challenge myself;

well here is is!

I achieved the effect of the skin with a base of purple, then drybrush red, then dry brush corax white and then white scar. I used the same dry brush which I feel created a really nice blend. I then added detail with red and white scar white.

The armour was achieved with a base of corax white and then highlight of white scar.

The sword (which I’m proudest of) is based in purple, then highlighted with white scar white and electric blue, then a  shade of purple and a highlight of white again.

Any questions let me know!!

This is the progress so far; base and backpack to do!!
