About the Project

Because I don't play enough game systems already and keep looking at it, let's dust off this copy of Star Saga and get into Deadzone 3rd edition!

As I was sorting bits out, I decided to just go ahead and do the bases on the rest of the Star Saga minis.  Hopefully this will speed things up a bit for the remainder.

The bases are stonewall grey, coloured stripes, diluted typhus corrosion then a light stippling of cold grey to disguise any imperfect lines.

For the Cyborgs in my Mazon Labs, I am of course using the Dreadball cyborgs.  And as I have ended up with a spare captain model, he shall serve as my Cyborg Prime leader!

Painting in the order needed to field my tournament list on Saturday, here comes the other big thing from the Star Saga box, the super gribbly Plague Aberration!

I started with undead flesh, heavily glazed/washed with Cayman green.  Then drybrushed undead flesh, some more targetted glazing with terracotta, a terracotta/undead flesh highlight and the sand colour was used with bonewhite to work up the boney spines.  And pink to pick out some details.

Some more progress on the rank & file here, with the elite troops from the Star Saga set adding some long range fire support from the rifles and crowd control in the form of two flame throwers.

As these are the PVC cast versions of the sculpts I did find some details a bit soft and kept the paint jobs simple. I’d be interested to compare these to the hard plastics at some point.

I had a little fun with this one as it is a mad thing.  I started off with going orange as part of the faction scheme and then attempted a mottled effect by glazing dilute charred brown.

The cabling was originally pink to match Dr Koyner but it wasn’t working against the orange so I swapped it out for fluorescent yellow.  Who knows what they are pumping into this psychic squid?

Make things playable

While I’m probably going to get more use out of these minis in Deadzone, I do still want them to be playable in the Star Saga boardgame.  Most of the minis come on 25mm bases which is what Deadzone uses, so cool.

The big Chovar squid thing needed a 40mm base which I could just glue on without changing anything as the model is meant to be occupying 4 spaces on the board anyway.

The Plague Aberration, however, needs a 60mm base.  That would interfere with things in Star Saga so I decided to magnetise it.  The Aberration has big meaty fists so I drilled into them and popped in some magnets.
