About the Project

Centuries ago, the elder races made a pact to keep magik from humanity, sensing in them a destructive impulse that threatened the very fabric of reality. Humanity, in response, killed them—and then stole their arcane secrets for themselves.

Skirmishers -Elite Footmen

Elite footmen are basically Men at Arms but tougher. Again I deviated away from the idea that they are all halberdiers. Mostly because I have next to no halberds available.

I decided to only use red on elite units.

Line Infantry -Crossbowmen

Crossbowmen, I used a mix of Fireforge and Warlord miniatures.

These are a pain to paint, I never like painting crossbows.

I really could do with making another 18 though, that gives enough for three regiments or two bolstered regiments. I am also considering building a second army to go up against these … it’s getting out of hand already…no surprises there

Line Infantry -Musketeers

I had a lot of fun with head swaps on these. But they were a slog to paint. I always knew the Napoleonics I bought in a moment of over excitement would be useful eventually

Line Infantry- Men At Arms

I kitbashed some conquistadors with fire forge foot sergeants. Could probably use some these in Baron’s War as well.

Went with muted tones from the John Blanche collection. With elite units I intend to use brighter colour schemes (but still from the JB range).

To add a bit of wear and tear on the shields and clothing I used a tiny sponge to add dirt and chipping effects. Pretty much the same way I would weather a vehicle.

I stumbled across this in the Void Admiral fb group and it piqued my interest. A grimdark late mediaeval/black powder setting with just human forces. I decided this might be a fun challenge to do with the John Blanche paint sets. So I set about sourcing troops from what I had around me and maybe a few purchases to plug the gaps.

The game has six factions , these are all based on one grisly form of magic or another and grants each player to a unique set of abilities.

Troop types are divided into several different categories

Line Infantry – The bulk of your army. Larger units of melee, musket and crossbow men, these units can include a cultist which give various abilities /bonuses to your otherwise vanilla troops.

Skirmishers – A broad range of elite and specialised forces -this are still fairly generic in terms of troop types- nothing will feel too exotic here.

Cavalry -Light Horse, Cuirassiers, Dragoons and Knights standard stuff but appeals to my black powder low fantasy affinities

Artillery -Cannons, Mortars and Scatterguns- if you have played Cossacks RTS game then you get the idea

Monstrosities- Think 40 mm based units from Kings of War and then monsters, no base sized specified for these, go nuts. The can be derived from dark magic or alchemy, demons , golems anything goes. I leaned into conquest minis for this. There are cheaper options out there!
