Ariadna has one of the best background stories in my opinion, from the stranded colonists to the fate of the second ship (really worth reading it), their internal struggle and their uneasy unification in the face of external threats. Even their stereotypes are well made, considering they are were lost in the most distant place a human had ever been with no hope of rescue, reverting to such stereotypes in order to create a from scratch a unified culture reminding the lost home seems logical.
