The Epic Sci-Fi Kickstarter THON Gets Cancelled
March 20, 2013 by brennon
It seems as if we won't be chanting the THON song much over the next few days and weeks as the creator has pulled the Kickstarter and cancelled it...
From Facebook...
"It is with a heavy heart that I cancel funding on THON. The upside is that we will return bigger and better, with this experience behind us. I have no exact time frame but please stay tuned to Facebook and the official page.

Thanks to all that backed us, and especially those that hung in there despite the ups and downs. The game has changed, and we will change with it. This kickstarter is over, but our Spirit remains.
Endure."
It came as quite a surprise as the game looked like it was going very well and they had beaten their target amount and were moving on to plenty of other options for backers.
After looking through the Kickstarter it seems like they were losing support and pledges but more information is still hard to find. However it looks like the creators are willing to come back soon with this game, so let's hope it happens.
We were big fans of the miniatures for this game, so let's hope they see the light of day.
What do you think about the turn around?

In way Im glad that a few high profile Kick Starters (GOA, cough cough!) have failed recently. It was at the point where everything was being Kick Started and it seemed like it was becomming a bit of a lazy gimmick.
Yeah, i think there is just too many mini games on kickstarter atm. And you need something different then all the others to stand out.
It is with a heavy heart and infinite sadness that for the last time, i post this eulogy (sniff). A specially edited version of the song you have all come to know and love / despise….

It’s all too much to take 🙁
While I didn’t particularly care for the concept and the overall aesthetic left me feeling very “meh” I was still following this one so the closure was quite a surprise.
However I’ve seen a lot of KS troll activity recently (particularly in the Warzone KS) and I’m not sure if that is a deliberate effort by some people to sabotage specific projects.. or if this is simply the consequence of so there being so many of them that people are backing without really being serious about the pledge and pulling out again when something more shiny comes along (I’m looking at you, Zombicide..)
Thank you for mentioning the THON Song in the post Brennon 🙂 It was a carefully thought out choice to bring it to the BOW world as i first thought that the marrying of diminuitve RNB lingerie soul dwaf Sisqo and a progressive sci-fi wargaming universe may prove to be anathema for many. Luckily tho, people seemed to have warmed to it like biscuits. THON biscuits if you will. If the THON cancellation is mentioned on Weekender then i would like a shout out please. If not then, my JLS / Infinity mash up in an Aleph styley will begin to appear on all related threads. Many thanks. 😉
Shame, had some nice minis in there, although I did think some of them were a bit too spindly looking for my own personal preference.
I hope they get the game out there somehow at some point , the guys behind it had obviously put a huge amount of work into it, they deserve to get the thing out to the public for that.
GW probably have a bunch of KS trolls roaming about .. it wouldnt suprise me at all
The big problem is that there is a big overflow of wargames and miniatures in kickstarter and many people change their focus ones something new and sometimes more exciting arrives ( maybe just because is new or because it really is more exciting ).
Wargaming companies and miniatures producers need to be real and take they turns ( yeah sound impossible but is clearly needed ) in order to everyone get the best of kickstarter.
I’m not against at all about big companies using this for launching new games, is just that there is world hobby’s moneypool that’s limited and if you squish it too much you ended up like that.
A civil thing that any companie could do is put a max limit to what their want to get ( not actually state it ) and also promote other cool miniature kickstarter like many other companies are doing right now, that’s helps to spread the word and gives other companies the opportunity to launch their games.
I know i’m being very optimistic ( and utopic maybe ) but since we see is a limited resource it needs to be treated carefully.
Vondrasky got it right and I think this realy is the cause of these recent high profile failures.. KS is being gang raped by companies and our pockets are only so deep. Quality folks, not quantity is whats needed. Ill only ever stretch to two or three games a year and Ill want to get a couple of years worth of enjoyment from them. Ill back KS to get some extras and hopefully make some savings but thats it! I dont do it to get a game launched… let me just repeat that, “I DO NOT BACK KS TO GET A GAME LAUNCHED” I back them to get something I wouldnt get at retail, ie cool extras that save me money. Maybe Im alone with this but if Im not then these companies should rethink there initial reason for launching on KS. Id be realy interested to find out if Im in the minority or the majority here. Of course Id back something that was truly wish fulfilment but unless your in love with seeing your faviourite “whatever” being made into a game I seriously doubt that this kind of niech marketing will ever succeed. Im a lifetime 2000AD fan and I didnt back either Dredd or Rogue trooper.
Great Minis will get backers, like that one with the tiles and horror monsters with survivors…you know the one with the crazy ass monsters Roman is such a fan of? (sorry I cant think of its name). Or popular game concepts that fill a hole in the market, like DreadBall, have proven that KS backers are verry much not a niech market but are in fact a (mini) mass market . Am I wrong?
It’s a shame, apart from Kingdom Death this was the only one i considered backing. I liked the majority of stuff that they were putting in, there was not to much stuff which i liked. Problem with many of the KS’s i have seen is that i like a few things but have to pledge a lot of cash to get those few i like leaving me with a whole bunch of figs i will never use ( yes, yes i know i could ebay them but i doubt i would get back what i put in for the few i wanted. )
It’s truly a shame as the idea of a 3 in 1 game is unique in itself. I hope this can be supported in the future.
As for the resent string of high profile KS closing the doors I’m not surprised at all. As @anto mentioned (and I do think your in the majority) most backers go for 3 things. The first is quality minis, the second is a complete game ready for release and last is games that give loads of “free” stuff as the stretch goals are met. Some companies have learned to do crowd funding very well and they will most likely dominate this market for some time.
Yeah, there is a crazy number of mini’s being ks’ed at the mo. Think the other issue is that a lot of these companies are putting low targets on their projects to look good in the ks rankings. So while Thon was still over its target, I’d be very surprised if they actually could have put all the components together for that amount.
