Cover saves are one of the many aspects of the game that I just don’t “get” yet. So because I cannot see the rest of the Orks, then I am only “allowed” to target the ones in LoS? Or have you simply maneuvered strategically in order to put the Big Guy into closest proximity? Terrain/cover or not.
In the example he could see and shoot most of them , but it was through cover, which allowed him to focus fire on the ones not in cover to make sure he killed the one biggest threat in the unit. he could still have fired at the unit as a whole but there were guys closer to the unit than the nob who’d have gotten cover saves, which could have prevented the marines killing the nob, meaning in his turn, he’d have eaten the sergeant pretty easily.
Good idea, but if you just get positioned getting closer to the guy you want to be dead, there is no need to focus fire (there are so many relative positions, that it could be really hard to find the moment to use this strategy, depends on the specific case). Also, don´t forget the rule “Look out sir!”, even if the soldier that protects the sargent/noble is not in the focused area, he can do it, as long as he´s the closest to the character.
I’m not actually sure if you can take a look out sir save, the focus fire rules say you can’t allocate wounds to a higher save than the group declared as the target of focused fire.
Surely, by definition, if the look out sir squadie is throwing himself in front of the character, then he (the squadie) loses the cover save, and hence no problem with “you can’t allocate wounds to a higher save than the group declared as the target of focused fire”.
That’s probably the best way to play it since the rules don’t actually tell you how, but in doing that you need to be sure the odds are that you can actually save the nob- two wounds on him and two left over is starting to get into the relms of futility, were in taking those saves you’ll just end up losing more boys as well, and every one lost less than 12 hurts more than the last…
Great tip.
Excellent tip. I love the new shooting rules. It opens up all kinds of positioning and targeting tactics. Looking forward to hearing more.
I also have to say great tip.On another the whole style of shooting in 40K has changes. There is no longer the idea of putting different kit on all your troops to spread the wounds around. You can now spam the same kit across the board without effecting the result.
personally I would stay where I was and rapid fire into the squad even though it might not kill the guy I want to kill but it might make him run
Being focus fired upon is also a good way to protect in some instances if you have enough cover on the important guys the enemy has to shoot the guys they can see only, I made someone waste about 6 bolter shot to kill a single tau gun drone attaced to my shas’o and in my next turn I popped out of cover and missle pod them with my shas’o and twinlinked burst cannon and rapid plasma rifle them then jump away
