Ok, so with my eldar I use a thing called ‘Magz’ was an American construction type toy where you get ball barings and these plastic stick bits with magnets on both ends. They are about 5mm longer than the standard fly base that comes with the jetbikes etc. I do check that it’s ok with my opponent but they are normally ok as it’s slightly harder for me to hide them. + I refuse to use the GW crappy bases as they break all the time! Also, there is a case where you can ‘pop up’ and shoot and then… Read more »
Nah too much cheese hunting going on here 😛 Making a base which can extend too much? Thats just desperate…
Fair enough if you have a massive FW flier on the massive base stand, or even if you have your speeder/jetbike on a really tall stand but its permanently fixed to it: I think you’d be hindering yourself because speeders rarely have good armour.
Darrel has it right at the end- if you can see to shoot them, they can see to shoot you. The way we have always looked at the skimmer/flyer rules is that the base isn’t actually there- if the vehicle is behind an object of cover it cannot be seen, unless it shot ‘over’ the cover– if it’s ‘above’ a piece of terrain (ie over a building) it can be seen following normal LOS rules- base height shouldn’t enter into it otherwise its creating 2 types of skimmer, look at the IG valkerye, huge base, could be seen over anything,… Read more »
It’s an interesting question. As a long time player of races that had a lot of skimmers I was happy to play either way, depending on my opponent’s preferences. In Epic: Armageddon you have rules where you can pop up for skimmers. Generally speaking if my opponent insisted on a pop up ability and was obstinant I usually worked it like this, bear in mind this is a house rule: A unit with the skimming ability can pop up in the movement phase in order to gain line of sight. However, it must remain popped up after the shooting phase… Read more »
I can see where hes coming from with this question, considering the fluff of the skimmer. The Grav plates allow it to rise high into the sky, but are not as maneuverable as a dedicated fighter or bomber and cannot match their speed. But, personally, I think hes hunting for something that Isn’t there, and wouldn’t allow this to happen in any game I played.
yeah, it even says that you have to okay scenic bases with your opponent.
Closest thing to this is a ‘pop up attack’ which basically was something that skimmers could do in 2nd Ed. 40K. The skimmer could float up, pop a shot off and then drop back down behind cover.
pretty similar to the trick of tau battlesuits where they can move in the assault phase I think (i know very little about the tau though)…
I don’t know about 2nd but in 3rd Eldar had a vehicle upgrade called crystal targeting matrix which allowed you to move any length in movement, shoot and then move any remainder in the assault phase, although for shooting purposes the combined length was used limiting you to 12″ or less of total movement.
I used to make my friends crazy with that one, doing the exact move shown on the table here.
One would assume that if something is flying up to shoot from an elevated position, without the benefit of some sort of special rule that let’s them go back into cover, that on the opponent’s next shooting phase he gets to shoot the hovering model as though it were still exposed in mid air, because it would have had to stay there long enough to acquire a target and shoot, thus leaving it vulnerable. I guess in that sort of agreement if both players wanted to allow it it would be okay as a table rule. But hell, I play… Read more »
Well, it was worth a try. I was basing it on old epic 40,000 and epic armageddon rules. If you could apply that rule to hammerheads with rail guns they you’d be laughing. I guess I was doing a bit of cheese hunting.
Thanks for answering the question.
I think it would make perfect sense since Deathcopters are counting skimmers and our modern Helicopters do pop up behind woods all the time.
So it would be fine with me as long as you dont want to Fire a Heavy cannon, i’d say that Flying higher would use up more energy and the recoil of a cannon would just be to much(or something like that)
I have Eldar jetbikes that i bought in 2nd edition well over 10 years ago and they came with 25mm hex bases. I’ve had a few people mention that the new jetbikes come with 60mm bases and that I should change mine. Heck no I say! But speaking of 2nd edition. Back then skimmers could pop up from behind terrain to shoot then go back down (of course the enemy could go on overwatch too).
