Kev and Mike are gearing up for the next installment of Battlebox & Beyond! Today the mighty forces of the Iosian Elves have been brought to the table to see just what you should be adding to bolster the forces within this lovely new battlebox.

ah stormfall, how I love the, Rng 12, Pow 12, Rat 5 bows of doom
so you saved the best for last.
The big stick of the elves is the giant cod pieces on the myrmydons.
great selection their guys surprised by some choices thought they’d be a little fiddly for beginners and leaving out the ghost sniper was also a surprise but enjoyed you adding in advice about how to use the bits in the starter as you’ve only really talked about the caster from the box so far.
Cheers, we thought as there is much more info about on line for the other main factions we should try and give a new Ret player a bit more help if we could regarding the battlebox.
As simple as the Ghost Sniper is it isnt something that can go in 90% of all lists the main goal of this series is to point new players to stuff that they can get milage out of in most of their lists while they are finding their feet.
Now if you excuse me im going to think about Kylie some more……
A couple of things that might be noteworthy
a) With the sentinels, their Defensive line can often be a “trap”. By this I mean, that you typically don’t want your Sentinels base to base. There are alot of attacks out there, that ignore armour, at which point you’ve helped the guy you’re fighting. Generally, spreading out as much as possible, helps combat aoe / spray damage, because less people fit under the aoe in the first place. By spreading out, you also make better use of reach, because you increase the area you cover.
b) With regards to the Battle Mages, while it is true that you ignore AoE damage, you don’t ignore AoE effects. So if an AoE damage caused people caught in the blast to go on fire, the battle mages would still catch on fire
c) The Manticore seems a bit overwhelming with regards to all the general rules it has, but the general rule is that you want to buy as many attacks as possible, and nearly all the time, combo strike is something you shouldn’t both with
Also, as a tip to new players, the wording of Covering Fire should be looked at. I.e. any model that begins or ends it activation in the aoe, takes 12 damage. So what that means, is that if you put down covering fire on a model you have already activated, then covering will act as a sort of bodyguard.
Eg; if you charge your Mage Hunter Assassin right up to (i.e. the 0.5 melee range) a battlecaster, do some damage but don’t kill it, then you can put down covering fire on the MHA. The MHA won’t take any damage, and what your opponent then has to figure out, is either risk running away from the MGA and risk a free strike, or they stay in combat with the MHA to try kill her, and take a power 12 hit;
Want another example? You can put it on your warcaster after he has activated. Then if anyone charges him next turn, they will have to take a 12 power hit.
Hopefully that gives some ideas
d) The Pheonix and it’s arc node ability. You can’t channel through an arc node engaged by the enemy. However, if your Pheonix is fighting models more than 2 inches away, due to it having reach, and the models it is fighting don’t have reach, you can still cast through the arc node.
All good points and thanks for posting that all up. Its a very tricky balance to go through all the tricks each model can do in various situations without it being information overload.
Hopefully what we put up in the video will be a good starting point for a new player and they can either read about these subtle extra tactics or learn them theirselves over time.
Yup it was a good video / job. Truth be told, I don’t know where I’d begin if I were making a video, because it would be too easy to get bogged down with the actual rules and how they work with just this faction.
Hopefully the big (probably boring) blog of text I’ve written just about covering fire and arc nodes, encourages some to take a much closer look at the rules, and realise that alot of work has gone into the actual wording. That it is meant to be as particular as it is.
I don’t know much about the game but this is the force I like the most.
Hi all. I’m selling off my Retribution stuff that I never got time to build or use.
Set includes the Battlebox, both retribution and prime rule books and a arcanist solo. All unbuilt and in box.
Please give then a good home.
