Community Spotlight: Action Movie Heroes, Glowing Armies & 2026 Hobby
February 18, 2026 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Action Movie Heroes by Rhox
We start off this week with a look at what Rhox has been working on. They wanted to get some paint down on some classic action movie heroes and so dove into the awesome collection by the folks at Crooked Dice.
The catalyst of this project was the awesome Rambo who was going to be fitting into a game of Battlespace that Rhox was playing. A few additional characters then joined the collection. You can't just buy one miniature, right?! So, Arnie, Riply and Robocop also got added into the mix and painted up for Rhox's collection.
The chosen method for painting these miniatures was to go with Speedpaints over the top of a zenithal undercoat. This means that the painting comes together really nicely and quickly. From that point, a bit of highlighting and additional detail work is added into the mix using regular acrylic paints.
A little bit of additional shading and then, in some cases, a light drybrush, helps to finish off the miniatures and produce that final look. I was really taken by the final look of Robocop here, using different colours to get the idea of the reflective surface across. It works really nicely with the blues and purples to make the figure feel deeper and more detailed than if you'd just gone with a standard overall metallic.
I have to say, Ripley also impressed me.
The work on getting all of those poppy colours into the mix really helps elevate the figure. I love the pink and white books and that classic military green pulse rifle. The miniatures look great and it's a solid set of fun figures to have worked on for the start of 2026. You can see more of Rhox's work once you've clicked through the Project link above.
Glowing Armies by laughingboy
Next up, we're changing up and going from singular miniatures to entire armies. laughingboy has been powering through the pile of potential and working on all sorts of armies. One of the most recent additions to the collection was the Grimdark Death Guard army for Warhammer 40,000.
The process here has been to get stuff done and in the case of the Death Guard that you see here, focus on making sure that they feel like a coherent force and to a theme. The theme here was speed and a purposeful mess, which chimes pretty accurately with the Death Guard as a faction.
laughingboy goes through the entire process of bringing these to life, which feels dirty, quick and incredibly fun. There is a great use of oils and weathering in order to achieve that rusted and broken-down effect. You've then got all of the fluorescent elements, which really make the miniatures pop.
I also like that the extra step, the blood spatter, oozing snot, crusting rust, and sticky slime, was such a fun bit of the process that helps complete the look. You get a great sense of how impressive this all looks once you see the entire army laid out.
A sterling collection and painted up awesomely. If this has got you intrigued, you should go and check out more from laughingboy over on their Project, as they also painted an excellent, bright pink Necron force. Plus, you can see the army that actually glows in the dark! You're not going to lose any of those miniatures under the table!
Kickstarted 2026 Hobby by balthazaar
Last but not least, we have a little bit of everything from balthazaar who has been working on a few different projects for the start of 2026.
Some of their most recent work has been on painting up some great miniatures from Trench Crusade. I really like the red armour and the contrasting blue for the Red Brigade (aptly named). I loved the look of these miniatures from the first time I saw them and so it's great to see them getting painted up in a different style from the studio paint job. They look fantastic and it's good to see bright colours in Trench Crusade!
As well as that, balthazaar also started working through the Prussians and a very different style of armour.
This is much more traditionally militaristic and I think it works really well. I love the deep shading and the spots of colour, like the red, used to draw the eye. You've got alao that that little bit of battle damage here and there that sells the fact that they spend all of their time slogging through muddy trenches.
As a complete change, balthazaar has also been doing what we all do and painting other miniatures as well. Here, you can see some of their work on a pair of heroes from the Battle Systems game, Maladum.
The goal that balthazaar is aiming for is to have at least painted 365 miniatures by the end of the year. A miniature a day (keeps the doctor away?). They have already got off to a good start with thirty-eight miniatures on the docket. Hopefully they keep at it and I can't wait to see what they have achieved by the end of 2026.
