Morning guys,
Really liking the choices Bolt Action made for Team Yankee and the British forces. Although the Kelly’s Heroes stuff has triggered my shiny syndrome having grew up watching that film.
Really looking forward to Dropfleet as I was lucky enough to grab a place on the Dec Boot Camp.
Same time tomorrow for the XLBS 🙂
Good morning! It will be interesting week!
I palatably ache for the Kelly’s Heroes set.
Just for a bit if trivia. The Tiger used in Kelly’s Heroes was originally from the Yugoslavian film The Battle of Neretva
‘Rigid.’ – Warren, BoW.
A new show…
Can’t wait! 🙂
Kellys Heroes kit looks awesome.. Team Yankee is also beginning to intrigue..
Really looking forward to seeing how John painted the Iron Maiden stuff, it looked very good.
Great show; right I’m off to watch Kelly’s Heroes now.
Looks like Team Yankee finally gets a little more shape. Really looking forward to what comes next for this game.
So. About that Dropfleet Coverage…
…where is it..? Because it certainly wasn’t even mentiined in the “Dave got a suntan” section.
Lol
Those painted Iron Maiden units from John are very cool. I might be a little sad but I’d totally watch a show where John picks a tank / unit from history, waxes lyrical about the history of the vehicle then maybe shows examples of models for that tank/unit/model from varying companies and scales.
I find it hilarious that most people who watch this show will be sneaking off to watch Kelly’s Heroes today. I did the same thing when I saw the announcement of the miniatures. I know when I get into a new project I like to hoover up information and media, books, films, you name it. In this if anyone can recommend any films / tv shows that would work well around the Iron Maiden/Team Yankee releases please let me know. I’ve already got the book which I’m starting today but what else can whet my appetite.
One of my all time favourite film characters
Oddball: Hi, man.
Big Joe: What are you doing?
Oddball: I’m drinking wine and eating cheese, and catching some rays, you know.
Big Joe: What’s happening?
Oddball: Well, the tank’s broke and they’re trying to fix it.
Big Joe: Well, then, why the hell aren’t you up there helping them?
Oddball: [chuckles] I only ride ’em, I don’t know what makes ’em work.
Big Joe: Christ!
Oddball: Definitely an antisocial type. Woof, woof, woof! That’s my other dog imitation.
It’s (half-way through) the Weekend!! Frustrating weekend waiting for some KS bundles to materialise so I can get on with hobby, including DFC. Interesting tweet showing Dave from Hawk in filming stuff… let’s see what he has to say.
Ho-hum, there’as always the plasyoc mountain…
T-72 rules!
At last, been waiting for the Chieftains, will definitely get some of these now.
Hopefully my dropfleet pledge will arrive this week also got team Yankee brits due Monday
Did you get any confirmation from Hawk that they were shipping your pledge yet ?
I haven’t seen anything yet aside from the generic announcement recently.
I’m estimating it’ll be a few more weeks as I doubt they can pack&ship +/- 4000 orders within less than two months (assuming 20 work days / month, 100 orders per day …).
Now finally an excuse to get into Team Yankee
New Team Yankee stuff is going to eat into my Bolt Action hobby time 🙂
This won’t win me a prize but Hawk have screwed the DfC release, after all the promises it seems that those who ordered retail will get an actual starter box instead of the contents of said starter thrown into an overly large cardboard box.
Disappointing as they refused to alter the starter contents when it was requested during the kickstarter, yet send the whole lot out as loose items.
I’m a KS backer, but I don’t get what you’re saying the problem is. Retail gamers are going to get a copy of the starter set? What’s wrong with that?
I haven’t been following the updates closely so I may have missed announcements and controversies, but I’ve always been fairly relaxed about these things. I accept that with a KS you pledge and then just wait until it’s ready, regardless of whatever the estimated timings were.
What he means is that the starters going out to retail are going to be your standard shrink wrapped boxes similar to the Dropzone starter box. But so far according to all the backers that have recieved their stuff, it has just been the contents of the retail box (but no actual box), thrown loose into a large cardboard packing box with all the extra bits. This has pissed people off because during the kickstarter Hawk refused to let people change the starter fleets as they were a prepacked item. That has now been proven to be a lie and they could have easily just stuck a different set of sprues in the package as the backer retail box isn’t an actual retail box.
>That has now been proven to be a lie and they could have easily just stuck a different set of sprues in the package
Except of it’d probably f… up the entire production queue trying to cast what’s essentially a set separately to tailor it to individual customer’s precious needs, raising cost and slowing the whole thing down. Nothing that involves logistics is *easy*.
To be honest. Although it woukd have been nice i’m personally not to bothered about it. I was just clarifyimg how others feel.
Not sure how it would up the cost or feck everything up though. The numbers would have been known beforehand and it would just mean casting extra during the production run. (Which would cost next to nothing to do once it was set up.) Logistics also means next to nothing in this case as they have to pick and pack everyones pledge individually anyway as nobody would have bought the exact same thing..
@tasker every time you add a choice you are massively affecting logistics and increasing the likelihood of mistakes (which you end up paying for in more postage, more product, more packaging)
This is exactly the sort of decision, which has caused huge issues in other Kickstarters (that caused a lot of complaining) and is now why more and more Kickstarters, are settling for a reduced grand total, but a simpler product to pack and ship.
A prepacked item, (IMHO) has nothing to do with the box and everything to do with the production and packing lines – to ship quickly and with minimum error (as there will always be error somewhere) you tightly define and control the the number of actions required to put together ‘a product’ – ‘pre packed’ is about the process not the container.
I really do understand what you are trying to say but I’m not sure it counts in this regard. People are saying that it’s not prepackaged as they aren’t supplying the retail box. I grant that the individual starters might be packaged in bubble wrap or plastic bag, but they still have to grab said bags to put in the despatch box with the package containing the books etc… They have to grab all of the added extra starters and other add ons that people pledged for during the kickstarter (lets assume those are all bagged into starters etc, too) so how much extra effort is it for the packer to pick bag C&D and put them in the box instead of A&B when they have to pick a random selection of other bits too..?
As i’ve said. Personally i’m not to bothered either way. I was doing the devils advocate thing for all those that would have liked to change things. 🙂
Some KS backers are not pleased that they’re not getting the actual starter box, just the contents.
I’m a backer and I don’t mind, I don’t need the box for anything. Overall, as very successful Kickstarters go, IMO Hawk is doing excellent job of being late only few months. Also we’re getting lot more pages in the rulebook than originally expected.
Backers have received the starter set a a loose collection of components
Hawk is still a pretty small company with limited manpower and resources. I don;t care that my pledge won’t have the starter sets in the boxes.. since those are the first things to find their way into a bin once it’s done with. Also, this was their first kickstarter, and it’s aim as to make the range largely plastic, which they achieved. I think they managed it well. And at the end of the day backing for a “2 player starter box” is like going into a shop to buy the product, the fact that it doesn’t come in it’s box is irrelevant. The factions in the box are what you are getting. You wouldn’t go into a hobby store to buy one and say “oh sorry, I don’t like Scourge, can you just put another UCM fleet in there for me?”
Just glad I’m waiting for a retail version. As for throwing boxes away, I’ve still got my box from the battlefleet gothic starter set from 1999, but I’m more of a collector than a gamer, so I can see why some people are pissed off in that respect. But saying that I agree about the set, a starter set is what it is, set. The extra manpower involved in customization of a starter set for everyone’s individual needs would be quite high, so I can see why they didn’t want to swap bits around. And as the old saying goes, “you no like you no buy!”
It would have been nice though, but then again they never promised an actual starter set.
Dear me get a life, and stop moaning people wait for the delivery and enjoy it
A lot of people keep their games in the box they come in, so lack of a box is very important to those people. Not everyone has a huge studio full of shelves and containers to keep things in. 🙂
Also. Commodorerob… could you be any more condecending if you tried..?
I am waiting for my rather large DFC pledges (plural) to arrive but I will not pass any judgement on them until I see them in the flesh. There has been some discussion of warped resin on the FB page but apparently warm water works to solve that issue (we’ll see).
Team Yankee – I still maintain that the Germans have the best and sexiest kit. Leopard 2 eats Chieftans for breakfast.
Special rules may include reference to the paint rounds ‘Because they look awesome man’
From Kelly’s Heroes (1970) Oddball: This engine’s been modified by our mechanical genius here, Moriarty. Right? Moriarty: Whatever you say, babe.
Great to see the Team Yankee stuff. I had a brilliant time at the bootcamp but am now waiting for a few more players to get involved near me. Hopefully the Brits will inspire them.
Also I have to thank you for mentioning the Arcworlde KS. I’m a huge fan of theirs. I saw them at Salute and was hooked on the game, and their lovely models, instantly. Anyone who likes some quirky, skirmish fantasy has to give this a look. How can you say no to a game where your troll can eat your opponent’s models and your orks can throw goblins at them?
Morning all. Bring on the DFC stuff. One backer patiently here.
Loving the Oddball Sherman!
Also getting very excited about the Dropfleet stuff coming out soon and of course the Bootcamp 😎
Speaking of I’m intrigued by the announcement of two more Bootcamps early in the new year..
If one of them is has got anything to do with Bolt Action or K47 I’m gonna be all over it.
Team Yankee goes from strength to strength with every new release it seems.
I really have to paint all my Leopards soon now to justify the purchase of the Iron Maiden stuff
😉
I love how Dave loves his game so much, it really is and both exciting and a pleasure to see.
I was on the fence about picking up Guild Ball at this years Salute but now with this 2 player set I am sold. I will be picking this up at release.
Great show as always.
Yikes, this show will be bad for the wallet… Am very tempted by Guildball and Arceworld – both games that look great and yet I’ve managed to miss out on so far. The Chieftan was the first 1/35 scale model kit I ever made, and so has a soft spot for me. I don’t play Team Yankee, but got to say this looks like fun. I want to see the British infantry now!
And Dropfleet Commander! This looks stunning! I can’t wait to get the rulebook and read all the latest fluff. Really enjoyed Dropzone Commander Phase II.
I haven’t seen Kelly’s Heroes since I was a kid! currently digging through my portable hard drive to see if I have a copy to watch. Coupled with their previous Dad’s Army models, these are the sort of things that make me really want to play Bolt Action.
Incidentally John, I have been reading up about Churchill’s Ministry for Ungentlemanly Warfare and how there were apparently agents and forces kept at home and trained in resistance tactics in the case of an invasion. I was wondering if a workable scenario could be built around that idea, featuring Home Guard auxiliaries and SOE operatives. It’s the sort of thing that could be made as pulpy or as historically accurate as you fancy.
Just as long as I have some excuse to get my Dad’s Army minis on the table.
Absolutely Smashing Prizes for a Tantalising “what if the Cold War went Hot”, just hope those smashing prizes haven’t been smashed by an enthusiastic Warren chucking them around.
Oh by the way I’ve been wanting to sound you guys out. I found a copy of White Dwarf in English the other day and forked out the pre-requisite arm and a leg to buy it. I was reading it in work today and my class of 10-12 year olds spotted it and are now absolutely fascinated by it (especially the Imperial Guard you will be happy to know John).
This has me thinking about perhaps setting up an after school club, let them practice their English and play a few games. Obviously, my budget does not stretch to getting every kid a starter kit, but I was wondering if there was a 40k boxed game that might be simple enough for them to get in a second language and let a bunch play at a go.
I will point out, this is unlikely ever to happen given just how little free time a lot of these kids have (thanks to the joy of cram schools), but it would be interesting to know what you all think.
The kill team box might qualify. It’s ‘cheap’ (by 40k standards) as you’d get a mini rulebook and about 10 models per army (space marine & tau).
However 40k never was ‘simple’ and I doubt they’ll ever do a starter set that could compete with the ones that almost everyone else is doing ….
I would love to see you do this @dracs – and blog about it, obviously. As well as being an incredibly fun and rewarding thing to do, you would be a hobby ambassador!
GW have recently released a boxed version of Killteam (I think that’s what it’s called); the small-game, skirmish version of 40K, that I think comes with a marine tactical squad and Tau fire warrior squad. You could give each kid a single marine and a single tau, set them a paint scheme, and have them create their individual ‘player character’ to be part of the kill team squad for tiny games?
Although I suspect there would still be a lot of reading to do. If you want to stick with GW then probably your only hope is to go with one of the boxed games, like the Deathwatch vs. Genestealer cult one. (I’ve not played it and don’t know how complex it is.)
Alternatively you could go for another game which may have simpler rules. Perhaps if you find a simple rules set you could make up stats for using 40K miniatures in it?
Get in touch with GW after schools team, they may help you out. It’s worth a try, and you never know they be generous.
I’m drooling on those British units from Team Yankee.
Keep those Re-Rolls coming!
hyped for team yank Brits!
Intrusting. Wish there was something about Age of Sigmar.
“….Always with those negative waves” The OddBall Sherman looks brilliant. I think ill pick it up even if it just ends up being a display model. Classic movie and a great idea from warlord to release it in miniature form
I know they would never have fought in Europe, but I really want the PLA in Team Yankee, T-69’s and T-80’s with MASS HUMAN WAVES!!!
Cannot believe @warzan has not watched Kelly’s Heroes!! (Probably has by now though!).
Love what Warlord have done with them, will certainly be adding them to my collection at some point
Iron Maiden stuff looks good, unfortunately missed the launch event at the FLGS not too far away from me today so didn’t get to see it in the flesh – still haven’t taken the plunge yet (been finishing/clearing other projects)
Impudent Mortal terrain looks like it could be very handy with Shattered Earth arriving soon
I’ve never been too interested in reenactment/historical wargames but a British force which could be wierd world war’d a bit is very interesting
little bit of trivia – on the TOW equipped Lynx, TOW stands for
Tube launched
Optically tracked
Wire guided
Company B actually did an Odd Ball Sherman briefly. I will be picking up Warlords character pack and 3 Hollywood Tigers. With the rules it will make for a fun scenario or even convention game. Kelly’s Hero’s is a great Movie and I look forward to bringing it to life on the table.
As to Team Yankee Soviets, their was a T-80. A Yugoslavian variant of the T-72 with slightly higher tech I believe. The Mi-24 also had some interesting variants. Other Warsaw Pact nations also had variants on equipment. In some cases it was older export equipment that the member nations in attempting to upgrade things like thermal sights actually made them better than the original(and in some cases even the front line) Soviet model.
Have I got my sums wrong or is a dropfleet torpedo about the size of a supertanker?
Dropfleet rulebook looks fantastic…but just the few times Justin has handled it makes me more than a little nervouse about handling it while gaming….will there be a small (a5?) book just for rules in the future to not tear that gorgous book appart so soon?
I bought the digital version of team Yankee for android and i am thinking of scaling it down to 1/285. I think CHQ models look great, and there is a great variety.
There are many many blogs about playing TY in 6 and 3mm
Glad to see the Brits for Team Yankee, now I need to find some 20+mm Chieftans to suplement my Battlefield Evolution British army.
Thank you for giving us a chance to win! Happy Saturday!
Great show guys!
I think i’ll have to get a Kelly’s Heroes DVD early next week, because i now have to see it again! If i was a better painter, i’d also get those 2 kits and build a mini diorama (because i don’t play BA…).
Even though i don’t play Dropfleet & Team Yankee, i Watch all the way through the interviews, i really like those 2 guys (and tanks!).
See you tomorow morning
Awesome new release for Team Yankee. This game has been sorely tempting me to play.
Now, let me just state this. If I win, I promise I’d paint eyes on the canopy of one of the Lynx helicopters, because it looks like something right out of Pixar’s “Planes”. I would do this, I swear!
*Ducks and runs for cover.*
How about a set of eyes on all of the armour? Go full pixar and never be allowed in a gaming store again.
Lol. They don’t have quite the right look.
This idea would definitely get my younger nephew into wargaming. Evil plan initiated…
Disney Paxar’s TANKS… I’d buy into that.
Disney’s Tanks :
A story about the lone Chieftain that would disguise itself as a big American tank just to help the big boys when the reds invaded …
@johnlyons Awesome! I didn’t expect you to say that about Pixar Tanks!
So if I understand correctly, you can get the new Dropzone Commander rules and not need the originals? It just advances the story line?
@aparadektos Had I not had a bunch of local gamers jump on the Team Yankee bandwagon in 15mm I would have gone 1/285th in a heartbeat. I think the ranges look and work better in that scale and you actually feel like you are maneuvering if on a 4 by 6 foot table.
@mwcannon – I’m not sure if there’s a typo in your comment (so apologies if this sounds insultingly simple) but here’s what’s available and what you need:
DFC Rulebook: ‘complete’ background / setting: history and summary of where we are in the current timeline (and this book is the most ‘up to the minute’ book from Hawk in print). And obviously, if you want to play DFC, you’ll need this book, as this is where the rules are. You won’t need any DZC books to either play the game or understand the storyline.
DZC Rulebook: still essential for playing Dropzone Commander as this is where nearly all of the rules are. It’s also where you find the history of the setting and the ‘starting off point’ for the game’s current timeline.
DZC Reconquest Phase 1 & 2 books: These books have a few more rules in (nothing essential) plus rules for loads of new units for all the armies released so far. (Phase 1 is where the Resistance faction were introduced: they had nothing in the main rulebook.). Each of these books advances the timeline by 250 days. The final few pages of Phase 2 set the scene for some of the events that will – I assume – be explored in more detail in Dropfleet Commander (I haven’t seen the book so don’t know what’s in it).
If you’re wanting to play Dropzone then you ONLY need the main rulebook (available in the excellent starter set). That said, if you enjoy the game then you WILL want to buy Phase 1 and Phase 2. (They are both excellent value for money though.)
In addition, you will want to buy the deck of command cards for each of the factions you play.
And you may want to download one of the free army builder programmes to help build your army.
Well, coughed up for a fairly sizeable pre order for DFC, can’t wait, but I frankly have no clue when to expect it to ship lol.
Also really looking forward to building the Brits for TY! Although it’s going to have to wait till next year, most of the stuff I’d need isn’t out till late this year anyway.
Guildball looks like a great way to start, and liking the new team Yankee stuff as well.
Happy Weekend!
The Kellys Heros kits look great and their rules sound hilarious, I wonder which other WW2 movies could be adapted for Bolt Action, Where Eagles Dare, maybe, The Dirty Dozen, definitely.
Yes, Fire Giants are to all intents and purposes oversized very angry Dwarves, earn their respect and they might just be persuaded to forge you some suitably epic arms & armour.
Yahoo! Dropfleet is launching! waiting patiently for my pledge. and more content on the way, excellent, the Multiplayer-Single day integrated Dropfleet/Dropzone game, in particular, looks like it could be awesome, looking forward to it 😀
Oh yes the last few pages of Reconquest Phase 2 are loaded with revelations and foreshadowing
The Hunt For Red October looks interesting, may have to practice my Sean Connery impression.
Great show guys 🙂
Eagerly waiting the arrival of both my DFC pledges, does it bother me that some people might get theirs from retail first?… Hell no, I’ve got plenty of other bits of plastic, metal and resin that will occupy me till then, I’m just looking forward to the mountain of tiny spaceships my wife and I have coming :). Definitely keen to see how the fluff progresses after the Reconquest:Phase 2 cliffhanger!
I think I’m going to have to have a closer look at the Arcworlde kickstarter some of those sculpts look particularly appealing.
I am loving the Brits for Team Yankee and I think I am in
finally Ben has a headset that’s not held together with tape
New headset, better net connection and a shiny camera – I’m almost in the 21st Century!
The fact it’s called the intercontinental weekend is making me think that WW3 is going to be for a golden leather belt and will be settled with a ladder match… Cue ring lights, pyrotech and walkout music.
Hey guys !
If I take a backstage account, can I download the previous edition of reroll ? I m looking foward to read the series on “creating your own world” ! 🙂
@macayana – they have said that they’re going to stop making Reroll 1 available (I’m not quite sure why). So if you’re interested, you should join quickly and download it while you can. Remember, you can get a 7 day trial account for free (though the monthly backstager cost is one of the best uses of money I can think of)…
Yeah, I like what the team is doing, if my help can make that great stuff continue, so be it ! 😉
Thanks for the advice !
looks like I’m going to have to get the Oddball’s (Kelly’s) Heroes sets and another box of US infantry so i can re-create scenes from the film (& hope i can stop there – already got three armies in Bolt Action already…….)
also enjoyed watching the Iron Maiden blogs especially the painting guides
@johnlyons the weak turret motor must be for the ally seen with the tree and telegraph poll.
Yes! I forgot about that moment 🙂
This is the release I have been waiting for.
Been hard to resist the Germans but all good things come to those who wait.
Now bring on the Chinese, I fancy defending Hong Kong.
a great show guys love the way that the Dropfleet ties in with the ground units.
can you kill the asteroids to damage ships passing as it explodes?
the Kelly’s hero’s stuff looks ace.
Is there going to be a in depth un boxing of the Kelly’s heroes figures , you guys skipped over them in the video
hoping for more Dropfleet in XLBS
Great show guys, all great looking models. Team Yankee is really getting a great line of models and factions. I really need to get playing. As awesome as the Brits are I think ill still go with the Germans. Is there going to be anymore Warsaw Pact models?
I am looking forward to getting my Dropfleet Pledge and I understand the whole retail thing especially this not being my first Kickstarter and Hawks first, so that doesn’t upset me that much. Tho seeing what looks like a retail box for the 2-player starter on the shelf I am disappointed we backers won’t be getting that and were never really told. Also the communication hasn’t been great, finding things out on Beasts of War before as a backer isn’t the greatest. Not receiving my stuff yet I can’t really say how this kickstarter will stack against others on things like Quality, Value, Communication, Timeliness, but it is their first and is a learning experience. The game itself which is the most important part still looks great and I am still excited for it despite the disappointments.
Warren cant believe you’ve never seen Kelly’s Heroes, my best WWII film, well the first one i ever saw at the cinema, which makes it The Best, when i was only about 11, back in the good old days about 72’ish. (Whoof Whoof, my other dog impression).
John.., When the film Kelly Heroes starts they had willys jeeps and halftracks,
but one of the halftracks had a anti-tank gun mounted on it ?? or was it just another film prop.
If not a prop, then what is it.
If unable to get the model for my 28mm US Army, then another conversion it will have to be.
Already have 3 Willy’s and 2 Halftracks already. Now I can have my armour The Tanks.
John/Justin (I believe i put in for the same Dropfeet pledge that you’s did, but don’t have them yet, but cant wait, so exited to paint them up and start off on a all in campaign within my club).
And now the Shinning sorry shiny syndrome Iron Maiden has made its way to the table top OMG.
Once more into the breach my friends. Just what I’ve been waiting for to get myself into this war zone.
Oh, this weekend may just push me over the edge for Team Yankee!
can’t wait to hear what the next boot camps will be!
Good episode as always guys!
Great show, can’t wait to get my Dropfleet Commander stuff!
“Whip ’em out John” scared me with that one!
I have been waiting so long for British Army of the Rhine for TY… All this build up from Battlefront and BOW is a hobby dream for me. Finally TY becomes more than just tank vs tank with a few troops thrown in for aesthetics. With the 14 (!) MILAN launchers, the enemy best keep their heads down when advancing into defensive positions. And that’s without the tanks.
I’m looking to build a mechanised list that really will cause a headache in terms of watching the flanks at all times. Roll on Brits, Chieftains and Lynx airmobile assault teams. Salvaiting over here in my hobby corner… Especially after researching Berlin colour schemes. All those abstract shapes and colours makes for a fun painting challenge 😀
Can’t wait for Dropfleet! Please keep packing, guys!
Iron maiden really making team yankee so tempting. Oh as a quick update on the guildball starter it is the season 3 rulebook in the box.
Kelly’s Hero’s are awesome can’t wait to get hold of them
Hurray the Brits are coming back 🙂
Iam really looking forward to them, because i love the look of the chieftain tanks and maybe in a far future the challengers? 😉 Well i played a lot of flames of War (Soviet, German and Polish first armoured) and until now i could resist Team Yankee, but now with the West Germans on the March and the British Bulldog on the Horizon its pretty hard to resist much further 🙂
Great Job Guys now i have to talk with my Wife why i want to buy another Army. Are there Plans for some DDR (East Germans) Forces?
New I should have backe the DF Kickstarter
Damm odball and Hollywood tiger rules are hilarious, What a fun game do you go na have with such minis, Iron maden make my budget scares again, no other better ñame for brit faction coolest than that, respect.
Maybe next month can start to collect a force for team yankee or soon Hope.
Great episode mates!!
The British infantry are regarded as some of the best in the world. Every soldier in the British army are considered an infantryman first before their trade training. Every year regardless of your job role you are required to do infantry training, such as rifle training, NBC, field craft and an infantry field exercise. I served in the artillery yet during my service I completed urban infantry tactics training and house clearance, as well as infantry exercises, where our enemy were an infantry regiment, on one occasion it was the paras. Also did escape and evasion training which was fun until you were captured.
So infantry should play a vital role for the Brits in Team Yankee, hopefully there will be Para and Ghurka regiments forth coming soon, along with Royal Marines and the beach landing speed boats they use.
I think I might have to play the Brits when it comes to TY.
Also Kelly’s Heroes is the best “war” movie of all time. I met a guy once who was in the Ardennes – and he basically said the same thing about Tigers! In the movie the way the way it was filmed the tanks looked just like a Tiger. Holds up very well.
Absolutely loving Team Yankee. I was wondering though how old is the interview with Phil? My LGS already has Iron Maiden rule books in stock.
Very cool to see it global and the blog having stores info was very cool. Makes me wish I was near one of those stores! But CANNOT WAIT for my DROPFLEET stuff – was so cool seeing them at GENCON….it can’t ship fast enough! And though they announced some of us will be getting after the release in retail – I’m not bothered, and completely understand logistics with their trading partners – and they are holding back their second release – so good on ’em!
Good afternoon, all ~
I’ve recreated Kelly’s Heroes with a string of gaming groups in a variety of game systems; Valor & Victory, Axis & Allies 15mm, a scaled down Panzer Leader, etc. Even Flames of War had a dedicated supplement someone published for this. It’s always a blast, with the movie playing in the background or everyone quoting the movie, doing their best Donald Sutherland or Telly Savalas impression. The problem inevitably is at the end, you eventually have to put one Sherman up against three Tigers. And even in the movie (spoilers, for this 45-year old movie), they don’t actually win that tank battle.
And all respect to Oddball . . . and maybe this is just the “operational-scale” in me talking . . . but the best guy in this movie doesn’t get nearly enough credit. General Colt, played by Carol O’Connor.

“Did you ever hear enthusiasm like that in all your lives, they even got the damned grave diggers in there!”
Sadly, I’m not able to find his best scenes in YouTube. I may have to record them myself and upload them. 😀
100% agreed that Colt is one of the funniest characters without having to try hard at it..
“Oriskany.. did YOU lose my aerial photographs?”
lol
“Booker! I say, Booker! The old man was just on the line! Tells me I’ve broken through along an entire front. Why wasn’t I told?”
“I don’t know, sir.”
“You’re the ***damned communications officer, ain’t ya? You’re supposed to be able to communicate! Who’s broken through and how far have they gone?”
“Well, no one has, sir. It seems that someone’s found a hole in the right flank. They’re trying to push elements of the 35th and 321st into it.”
“Seems, Booker? Elements of the 35th and 321st? What I mean is, who’s pushin’ them in there, and where the hell are they?”
“Well, I don’t know, sir!”
“I’m coming’ down there, Booker!“
I am really liking the look of the Team Yankee really looks good, I just hope it is a little less gamey than FoW was.
Loving the look of the Kelly’s Heroes stuff, maybe they can go up against my Bolt Action Dad’s Army box 🙂
Ah. Speaking of the Kelly’s Heroes set, my good buddy is a huge fan of the movie (well we all are in this particularly group), and two years ago modelled up Oddball, and the rest of Kelly’s Heroes for his 40K Imperial guard army. They are all pretty awesome, but when he saw this set, he freaked out because we are just getting into Bolt Action and he can’t wait to get his hands on all the Kelly’s Heroes kits.
Great show guys. A hell of a lot of information packed into this one. 🙂
Both interviews where fantastic and am looking forward to see what Hawk has in store for the future; as far as Team Yankee I am not yet sold on it, the minis look great but I already have 3 massive armies for Flames of War. I am looking forward to the Guildball starter set and will probably pick it up just for the board tokens and templates, neither team interests me at all but will use them to get other players in to the game; I personally like the look of the butchers or the morticians.
I appreciate that Dave from Hawk explained whats going on with our pledges, the game and minis look amazing and am looking forward to the content he filmed this past week. I hope Dave never loses that passion and excitement he has for his product.
Brits will do for now, but I want to fly a Mirage in Team Yankee.
Unleash the French before its too late.
Fair play Dave, fair play. As a high level Dropfleet backer eagerly awaiting my stuff, I appreciate the need to move forward with retail. It is hugely important for the game to build support and presence in retail so that we can gather a community to support the game long term.
A great episode and a great segment on Iron Maiden. I learned a lot about the Chieftain (this is part of a generation that often gets “skipped” – along with the Leopard I, the M60A1-A3, the T-64A, etc), especially that armor upgrade.
So I either (1) agree with or (2) learned great new information I didn’t know before on 99% of what was presented here.
My only small issue came when I heard the Chieftain’s armor values. I think that upgrade is too high. Don’t get me wrong, the base 17 I can totally agree with. The T-72 has a 16 (without reactive armor panels), and carries the same laminate steel armor the Chieftain does. The Chieftain carries MORE armor than the T-72, so naturally should have a higher armor value.
My issue comes when the upgrade bumps it to 19, which puts it over the 18 listed for Chobham-equipped M1 Abrams and early-model Leopard 2 (which admittedly didn’t use Chobham in its initial configuration, despite popular belief, and I’m sure Team Yankee is trying to represent these early configurations).
What? Look, I know the Chieftain’s armor was upgraded, as mentioned in the video, and I know the details of that addition was still classified. But unless that upgrade was Chobham (which is also still classified in its exact composition and makeup), I don’t really see the Chieftain’s upgrade outstripping the Abrams in protection (to say nothing of later variants of the Leopard 2). And I don’t think it could be Chobham in that Chieftain upgrade, as I don’t think you can make Chobham in those curved, cast shapes. That’s the reason most more modern MBTs have that boxy, slab-faced look.
Admittedly, there is no way to really compare Chieftain upgrades to Chobham tanks because the Chobham armor is still so heavily classified. There are no sources anyone can quote (without breaking any national security laws, anyway) to draw an objective comparison between the upgraded Chieftains and really anything equipped with Chobham.
So it sounds like they made a subjective, artistic choice in this game. It’s a choice I frankly don’t agree with, but admittedly, it’s subjective and “artistic.” No worries, to each their own. 😀 I would only add that if bolting on this upgrade gave tanks a better protection than Chobham, I think they would have gone with that than investing tens of billions in a whole generation of NATO tanks equipped with Chobham. Circumstantial evidence perhaps, but I think it’s still pretty strong.
That said, it sounds like that Chieftain upgrade should get more than a +1 bump (say from a 17 to an 18), which is probably how BF wound up at the 19. I think the real problem is the game has “run out of room” in its armor scale. So if we look at something like this . . .
T-72: Defense 16
Chieftain: Defense 17
Chieftain+ : Defense 19
M1 Abrams: should be Defense 20
Leopard 2: Defense 20
M1A1/HA: Defense 22-23
M1A2/TUSK: Defense 24+
Meanwhile, before it sounds like I’m “British bashing” (absolutely not the case) – the Challengers 1 and 2 would have monster defense values exceeding the earlier Abrams. Those guys would START at 21 or 22, and climb from there. 😀 (Thicker armor than the Abrams, and while the Leopard 2 was also thick, didn’t have Chobham at least at first)
So I suppose my real issue isn’t so much that the Chieftain’s armor is too strong . . . it’s that the M1 and especially Leopard 2 are too low?
Then again, you run into an issue where this is only a d6 based game and if you give the M1 and Leopard 2 armor values of 20 and up, the T-72s will almost NEVER knock them out. This is less of a historical / technological issue and more of a game design obstacle. Leaving aside the fact that NATO shouldn’t be fighting T-72s in Soviet Category One armor divisions in the first place (that’s another whole post) . . . 😀 But even the correct tank (early T-80 variants) have basically the same gun, but better fire control and ammunition. So I really do understand that they can’t have T-72s needing to outnumber M1s or Leopard 2s by five or six or eight to one to achieve parity, which was actually the case. The game would start to break at that point.
It is a tough one. I’ve run across similar issues in many other game systems I have used, worked on, or designed. The technological variances are so high it’s tough to come up with a game that is both reasonably quasi-balanced (at least to the point of game functionality) . . . and also realistic / faithful to the conditions and factors in the field at the time.
Hello all,
the Dropfleet stuff is awesome. Purely awesome.
Justin asks us to suggest some additional ideas for Soviet releases.
I desperately, fervently, and earnestly plead for some T-80s. 😀 😀 😀
Because (deep breath, braced for backlash) . . . the T-72s aren’t really the right tank here.
I know, I know. I’m going to catch a lot of crap for this. But at least for the “Category One” GSFG Tank Divisions (Group of Soviet Forces in Germany), the Soviets by and large went from the T-64 to the T-80.
The T-72 was used only in small specialist roles in these divisions (surely the divisions that would have spearheaded such an invasion of west Germany and thus the ones featured in a Team Yankee game), and of course as an export tank to Warsaw Pact nations and other allies around the world.
PLEASE DON’T GET ME WRONG, I sincerely applaud Battlefront (I was at the Team Yankee bootcamp and met more than one rep from the company) for sticking true to the Team Yankee novel, which YES, does feature oceans of T-72s coming at the gallant American heroes.
That novel, though, was a little out of date when it was published in 1987. I don’t know when Harold Coyle wrote the book, but by 1987 the T-80 was the primary bull in the Soviet yard. They also portray the Abrams with the L7 105mm rifle, years after that gun had been replaced in US armored divisions by the Rh-120.
Also, Harold Coyle freely admits in his forward that he set his book in the setting outlined in Sir John Hackett’s The Third World War: August 1985 (published 1978). Now I wouldn’t stand up and try to correct a former commander of NATO, 🙂 but I would point out that this book was published in 1978, long before the T-80 was introduced. At the time the T-72 was EXPECTED to replace the T-64 as the next Soviet-used MBT, when in fact it would later turn out to be the T-80. Even Sir John Hackett wanted to update his own work, when he rolled out Third World War: The Untold Story, an update published in 1982.
A careful look at the Soviet MBT evolutionary line shows that they “skipped generations,” with the new release of a tank in a given decade first being exported to allies and proxy states, and only the SECOND line of tank kept for use by the actual Soviet Army. The T-62 was rolled out to everyone, the T-64 was a keeper. The T-72 was rolled out to everyone, the T-80 (actually released as early as 1974) was the keeper.
I have run across people before who swear up and down the Soviet Army made heavy use of the T-72 themselves in East Germany. The only thing I can say to this is that maybe . . . I stress maybe have been the case in the mid 1970s, in some select divisions. this would explain why Sir John Hackett included them heavily in Third World war 1985 and thus why they are in the Team Yankee novel and thus why they are in the Team Yankee game. But by 1985 certainly (when Team Yankee takes place), the switch had been made to the T-80.
Okay, so before I sound like I’m suggesting we all toss our T-72s, that is NOT the case.
1) T-72s are absolutely the correct tank in terms of the Team Yankee novel.
2) T-72s can be used as East German, Polish, Czech or any other Warsaw Pact tanks, and there were LOT of them.
3) T-72s can be easily proxied as T-80s (they look very similar).
4) T-72s can be used as Soviets, just say it’s a Category Two “follow on” division or some such.
5) T-72s are incredibly useful in a huge range of other areas. In fact, I’m thinking of buying a new M1s and repainting a few of my T-72s (I have 18 of them) in desert colors to run 1991 Gulf War One scenarios.
It just struck me as funny when Justin suggested we get East Germans. I laughed aloud and said “Dude, technically speaking that’s one of the things we DO have.” 😀 😀 😀
Hell, Battlefront could even include a T-80 turret in their T-72 kits (much in the same way they include both the L7/M68 105mm gun and the Rh120/M256 120mm in their Abrams kits, seriously great move there). I’m pretty sure the hulls are almost identical. You’d just need one extra piece for reactive armor bricks on the glacis plate, I think. Presto, T-72 becomes a T-80.
That, and a new card for the T-80.
Just please, some T-80s. 😀
Whenever I watch the weekender I get hyped about gaming again! I’m putting my models together as I type this!
Exactly what we want to hear 🙂
A lovely Monday here!! – Team Yankee game yesterday – my first game – 5 of us playing American vs Soviet – Soviets on both their objectives (one still contested) beginning turn 5. But my side of the board mostly US infantry was still in good heart and giving the Soviet tankers some major problems – pity about the M1s though all dead!! 🙂 A fun game
Team Yankee has always looked cool and all accounts seem to be that the quality and strength of rules is evident throughout. Playing as the British would be awesome especially the chieftain. I was too young to feel any serious anxiety or understand the cold war, but I was keenly interested in the Falklands War and love historical games. This game gives you a chance to field some units that were rarely fielded on any large scale at the height of the service period. I’m sure that people have already considered stats to get these great minis into TANKS for a real casual experience with an alternative flavour.
Different ways to play has been a theme recently and I find this compelling and really useful to me as a player with a limited base of people to play against.
e.g. Storm of Sigmar is on my Christmas list because it is a cheap gift, gives me some hobby, provides a bite size quick AoS game and if I can demo it to friends or family, I might just get a chance to collect and play more AoS if the bug bites.
I get shiny syndrome and have several game systems on the go, I love the hobby side as much as playing so I feel I still get my money’s worth from what I spend eventually.
I don’t need another space game but dropfleet still looks tempting…
Can’t believe you guys have done that many weekenders! I only get one weekend off in the month but that Saturday when I’m off I get up, go for a run, get back, shower, coffee and then weekender time! Thanks for making my weekends complete guys
Who said you can have too much gaming stuff?
Dropfleet looks cool but the Iron Maiden kits look banging
Patiently waiting for my fleet to drop in.
Meanwhile I’ll have to look up Kelly’s Heroes.
That Brit stuff for Team Yankee looks the DBs
I have been waiting for the British to arrive in team Yankee. There is a chap at club who has the Russians and I want to push the British against them. As for Kelly’s heroes I love that film and would love to create the characters on the battlefield.
I cannot wait to get my dropfleet in!
Hey, have you tried the Louisiana seasoning I sent in yet?
As a kid of the 80s the Challenger was the best thing ever – can you put a Thatcher objective marker in one!
Kelly’s Heroes is an awesome film! Don’t forget Clint and Telly Savalas – wish more miniature companies would do film tie-ins 🙂
…a crushed Jack Pallance from Attack!
Attack is a great film.Definitely in my top 10 maybe even top 5
Justin’s knowledge has come on so much since I started watching BoW so long ago. Check him out recognising all the tank parts without asking John first! Good job buddy!
In Team Yankee guesses on the future. More and better missiles to take out armor because a missile launcher is far cheaper and faster to make then a big tank. Some fast lighter armored units with missiles.
That’s it gotta get team Yankee now the brits are out
One day I will be able to start my team yanke army I just have to meany other games figures to paint
Hi there!
Interesting show this weekend. Really glad to see another force being added to Team Yankee. I now just have to convince my gaming group to begin playing this. In the end I’ll probably pick it up for myself anyway as the models are so nice and I’m a huge fan of modern warfare and the Cold War era. I think it was Justin who asked what R&D during the war would bring up, here’s my long winded answer:
For the Americans: We haven’t seen the next follow up versions of the Abrams. Right now we have the Abrams w/ the 105mm but the next step, the M1A1, brought the 120mm as well as thicker armor and more advanced sights. So I guess this version would be coming on line pretty quicly. I’m not sure but it might even have been in service in the timeline of Team Yankee. Next up would be the M1A1HA with depleted uranium armor and if the war continued on for a bit, I’m pretty sure the M1A2, again with more advanced electronics and better armor, would have entered service.
Also, I don’t see any mention of the M2/M3 Bradley IFV. This was the mainstay of the heavy armored division and mech. infantry division of the US. The Apache attack chopper was also in service during that time. The F-16 fighter would probably have had a huge role in close air support also. Finally, there is no mention yet of the reserve element of the US. The M60A3 tank was a huge part of that and it would probably have played a huge role in the war.
For the Soviets: follow up version of theT-72 are many. The T-72B and BM would probably join the fight pretty quickly. They had better armor and more advanced sights. The Soviets also had a neat trick up their sleeve called explosive reactive armor. All the T-72 versions were equipped with it culminating in the T-90MS entering service now in real life. This version would probably fight in the last day of the Cold War gone hot.
The T-80 was also a huge chunk of the Red Army in the Cold War, equipping elite Guards formation. This too had many versions and was a perfect match to the american M1. During the Cold War the T-80 was matching Abrams upgrades step for step and had some cool tricks up its sleeve too.
The T-64 was also in service at that time and contraty to what it’s designation may tell you, it was actually more advanced than the T-72. It was in service in Guards formations and would have been a force to be reckoned with.
We also don’t have models for the BTR line of wheeled APCs. That would be a nice addition as it was a huge part of the Soviet mechanized infantry units. Further down the line the Ka-50 Hokum and Mi-28 Havoc attack choppers would probably have entered service pretty quickly. Versions of the Flanker and Fulcum modernized for multi-role would probably have replaced the Su-25 in some roles. I’m speaking of the Mig-29M and SMT and the Su-30M and SM and the Su-34 Fullback.
I could go on and on but there’s an awful lot of room for Battlefront to continue churning nice models for a couple of years. In my opinion the scope of this is as great if not more than WW2.
Cheers.
Kelly’s Hero’s models and Oddball tanks? I will definitely need to get into Bolt Action now!
i am very impressed with the kellys heros set, especially the hollywood tiger. had no idea how many movies its actually been in but ITS A LOT!
Need tanks want tanks give me tanks Please 🙂
Dropfleet Commander looks awesome. I wish I could’ve backed the Kickstarter.
Still waiting on my dropfleet kickstasrter. So excited, but I get why. Dave has always done right by me in all my Dropzone commander stuff. And he’s tried to do right by everyone; kickstarter backers and retailers. Just appreciate that he tried.
Pick me!
Seeing all this Team Yankee stuff reminds me of my days in Germany with BAOR and later BFG. The Lynx MK7 was indeed retired from service earlier this year. The MK9A remains for the time being but will ultimately be replace with Wildcat which apparently isn’t a Lynx.
Warren, I hope you have now watched Kelly’s Heroes your education was obviously lacking somewhere!!
It took me until Thursday to see the Weekender but again I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I wouldn’t mind trying out the Team Yankee products.
The Brits for Team Yankee look awesome. I’m now holding out for the East Germans early in the New Year…
Beast Squadron Signing in 😉
Team Yankee looks great and its now inspired me into starting another scale. More stuff to add to the painting pile no doubt, but I must have it.
Just making sure I didn’t forget to comment!!!
I just looked up Kelly’s heros on youtube. They certainly got the Hollywood tiger right. It does look back to front.
Ahhhhh, my Dropfleet kickstarter should be turning up Amy day now (fingers crossed, whistles, knocks on wood, etc) but I really really want tyne Iron Maiden stiff to!!!! Why isn’t there more hours in the day
