Happy Sunday!
Battle in the box 1775-1783 war for independence would be awesome. American regulars, militia, natives and French verses the American loyalists, British regulars, natives and German (Hessian) mercenaries.
If you want to do the Battle of New Orleans you are now in the Napoleonics as that was the Second War for Independence more commonly known as the war of 1812. Of course this was truly just an alternate or second front of the Napoleon French wars that ended with 100 years of European peace with the Congress of Vienna and the budding relationship of the U.S. and Britain following the Treaty of Ghent.
Would be awesome!
Happy Sunday everyone!
happy sunday!
Happy sunday
Happy Sunday! The ACW did indeed have a large variety of very different uniforms. both sides had Zouaves with uniforms based loosely around French Colonial troops of the time… hence the fez and baggy red trousers. There were also “Highlanders” in kilts and even some hand me down AWI and Mexican War kit was around at the start, mainly in Confederate units, as uniforms were in very short supply!
Was this the song Warren was talking about? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuQwxUEPFD4
Aye Aye sailor, I like the look of that!
@warzan, did you learn nothing from my tutorial on the Robins?! Let’s go over it all again and next week there’ll be a test!…
Just kidding. To the best of my knowledge Pulp City is inspired by the superhero genre but not based on any IP. It’s been on the fringes of gaming interest for a few years but never quite made the leap. I agree that the current KS seems a step up from what’s gone before. With Batman Miniatures Game, it’s not so much that X can’t fight Y because they’re from different versions of the IP, but that the range is a bit of a hodge podge right now that has bits and pieces from different versions that aren’t fully developed. At least IMO.
Lol
I will ‘continue’ swatting up for it mate 😉
Warren defiantly look at Zouaves and Antietam. The Civil War is an awesome era to game and getting into the background and fallout of the war is really interesting.
Also The Battle of New Orleans was fought during the War of 1812 (Called the Forgotten War) and the Last of the Mohicans was fought during the French Indian War. A cool game to look into is Muskets and Tomahawks from the guys who make Saga which works for all three periods
@warzan, @redben, nerd hats on….
Dick Grayson was the first Robin, who left to form the Titans and changed to the costumed identity of Nightwing to create a clear line under the Robin identity. When Bruce Wayne was missing presumed dead (in the wake of Final Crisis), Dick took up the mantle of Batman with Damian Wayne as his Robin. When Bruce returned Dick remained as Gothams Batman whilst Bruce took his operation international with Batman Inc. As part of the New 52 reboot of DC’s line, Dick was back in the role of Nightwing, until his identity was revealed to the world by the Injustice Society and he had to fake his death. Currently Dick Grayson is working for the espionage group Spiral as a super spy…
Jason Todd, the second Robin. More volatile than Dick, most famous for getting beating then blown up by the Joker. His death influenced the Bat-books for decades until it was revealed he had been resurrected by Talia A’Ghul. As a result of the Lazarus Pit process Jason latched onto the idea that Bruce had failed him by not taking down the more violent elements of his rogues gallery permanently, so Jason took up the mantle of The Red Hood and became a vigilante with an approach more in common with The Punisher. He and Bruce reconciled (in a manner), and Jason has more recently formed The Outlaws with Starfire and Arsenal (Roy Harper), currently down to just Jason & Roy. Acts as the Robins snarky older brother…
Tim Drake – Robin III. One of the worlds greatest deductive minds even before becoming Robin, as he worked out Bruce Waynes role as Batman and that he NEEDED a Robin to counter balance his own inherrant darkness. Later took on the identity of Red Robin (more recently retconned that this was always the name he had taken), current leader of the Teen Titans.
(note – Tim is most often the Robin depicted in the videogames)
Stephanie Brown – the fourth Robin. Daughter of d-list villain Cluemaster, Initially took the identity of Spoiler, became Robin when Bruce ordered Tim Drake to vacate the role. Fired herself when she ignored one of Batmans instructions. Presumed dead after being tortured by Black Mask during War Games but spirited out of the country by Leslie Hopkins. Returned several years later and, in the wake of Batman presumed death in Final Crisis, became the third Batgirl. Post- Nu52 she has only recently appeared “in continuity”, again in the role of Spoiler where she is rooming with Harper “Bluebird” Row.
Damian Wayne – Robin V. The 10 year-old son of Bruce Wayne & Talia A’Ghul, Damian’s existence was kept secret from Bruce for years, only being revealed fairly recently. Very much his fathers son, Damian is incredibly intelligent and (even before entering his teens) one of the best fighters on the planet. Raised in the League of Assassins as it’s eventual heir, Damian did not necessarily lack morality, but did not know better so has been known to go for lethal solutions. Since meeting his father though he has strived to emulate him and gain his approval, first by taking up the role of Robin to Dick Grayson’s Batman after Bruce’s death, then continuing in the role once he returned. Damian was himself killed during Talia’s “Leviathan” gambit, an event that drove Bruce to extremes to bring his son back, including a trip to Apokalips. Since his resurrection Damian was briefly powered to almost Kryptonian levels, but has since reverted to “just” being the son of Batman. Has a soft spot for bringing animals home that reveal his young years.
Trusted partner to Dick Grayson, Jason Todd finds him an odd kindred spirit, whilst he and Tim Drake as the “younger sons” have an often antagonistic relationship, but a healthy respect for the others abilities….
So who was Red Thrush then?
An ex-girlfriend?…
@dawfydd, the nerd hat can come off?
I suspect that may be a freudian slip all of your own @warzan 😉
And @reben: sadly not that I’ve found.
Oh, and given this fascination with naval action, can I recommend Jim Butchers latest novel, The Aeronaut’s Windlass? Very steampunky but a major element is airships waging war between huge “spires”, each a sovereign nation in it’s own right, keeping humanity save above the ravaged ground. Lot’s of fun combat combining naval & aerial combat into one spiffy whole…
Sometimes.. sometimes.. comments that mean one thing totally strike me as funny for whole different reasons. Well said Mr. Redben, well said.. ex-girlfriend indeed.
Wasn’t she a villain who appeared unwanted out of the sewers, irritated a lot of people but then died when she fell into a tub of Canestan?
He was a little known character who’s only vulnerability was to the very rare element Can E Stan.
hank green is huge youtuber one half of the vlogbrothers channel, you should contact him and get a copy of the game to review for us, plus we can laugh at lloyds face when you make him play it @warzan
Sails of Glory sounds like a lot of fun, manoeuvring, broadsides and whatnot.
However, what it really needs is dragons!
Okay, so I’m in the middle of reading the Temeraire books by Naomi Novik – they’ve actually managed to get me interested in Napoleonics. Trafalgar, armies across Europe, Boney trying to get across the Channel… It’s great.
I don’t suppose anyone has heard of any games based on the series, have they? I thinking that the opportunities for games are immense.
Also all this talk of Zouaves is getting me very confused with Infinity 😉
Big thumbs up to Aeronef as well which is lighter than air naval ships which brigade models make some lovely models for
Do Pulp City have a distributer in the UK or Eurozone?
Pulp-city is based n Poland, I think at the moment you can only order from there website.
I don’t know about distribution but I can tell you that turnaround is pretty quick ordering from their website to the UK. And as they’re based in the EU there’s no Customs charges to worry about.
And their rulebook is a thing of beauty. Not as flashy as the Batman rulebook, but a clean, well laid out design with bold colours and great art. And a fun ruleset, but that’s almost secondary 😉
Happy Sunday!
Boswell? the heart of British Super-Heroes like “the Apologist” 😉
Home Raiders is delivering soon, they’re coming in bok-like storage bxes, additional boxes with foam available in the PM.
Don’t die… $35 (inc p&p) for a quick pickup?
Wizard School… different pledge & postage same overall price… $35. Looks more fun though! (Reminder – must pickup a copy of Evil Baby Orphanage & Jetpack Unicorn!)
& how could you NOT preview Halfling Feast – an eating game based around H0bb1t$ (disclaimer – definitely not those LOTR folk) eating lots of stuff! FINISHING WITHIN 24 Hours – £15 gets the game inc postage, ther’s even a fancy boxed gae for @warzan
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1588759266/halfling-feast-card-game
I hate my tablet’s screen keyboard!
Saxon were not a Hair Metal band! They were part of the NWOBHM… Ok they went a bit radio in the later parts of the 80s
Even Maiden had a touch of the hair metal about them 😉
Wash your mouth out, please!!!
I rest my case me Lord 😉
its only hair metal when you can visibly see 12 cans of hair spray have used
My accusation is now officially withdrawn lol
The Perrys box, is on my Christmas List. Would be cool if there are Zouaves in the box.
there are! not many, but they’re in there 🙂
The Perry’s box set reminds me of the old Featherstone book where it suggests you buy a box of Airfix Union and Confederate troops and he gives you basic rules to use before adding Cavalry and artillery and building up your forces from there
Excellent find Lloyd, just picked up the Puma and the Hanomag for my Bolt Action Germans…
Vikings would raid Vikings, as the Saxons would at least raid the “local” Viking settlements -a lot of it would be more a question of Kin than where you were from
And from the man who’s the closest living thing to a viking I know – THIS IS FACT 😉
@warzan check out the AWI tv show: Turn- Washingtons Spies. I’ve just finished series 2 both 1&2 are on Amazon streaming service.
In regards to Japan there were several engagements over the years with Korea and China. I plan to cover one of the major campaigns the Imjin War, in my article series; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_invasions_of_Korea_(1592–98)
Was that not the only time it happened though? Atleast in regards to that period (the period the perrys have minis for ie samurai).
it always seems odd to me when you guys say happy sunday and were now off to game…. you’ve told us you record the show, ‘usually on a Thursday I think it was, so it always makes me smile when you pretend to be off to play games or go car booting in warren’s case 😀
Wasn’t recorded on a Thursday 🙂
And I did go car booting (got bugger all though!) 😉
For years I wondered why Brucie would tell the audience they were so much better than last week’s..
Friday then 😉 lol
It wasn’t Sunday though which was my point 😀
Never the less – still makes me smile…
I am Ill today so up early this time, normally I don’t watch till after dinner on a Sunday… So there’s no way you recorded this and published it by 7am unless you are that committed that you need committing 😀
Good show though guys – get us some more on Cold War Pulp City please 🙂
PS: yes good find Lloyd, just picked up the M16 for BA.
In WW1 dreadnoughts had an engagement range of about 9000mm. Just as a point of interest the British built the first aircraft carrier in 1917 and launched its first ever carrier raid against a Zepplin base in Germany, although it might have been a factory.
ACW is interesting as it saw the end of what could probably be described as Napoleonic line tactics and the birth of modern warfare which would culminate in what happened in WW1 in regards trench warfare, machine guns etc
One game that might interest you is a recent Osprey release called They Come Unseen
“Submarines and surface fleets battle for Cold War dominance! NATO players must use their submarines to sneak troops into enemy ports, destroying vital strategic targets, while the Soviet team deploys a surface fleet to hunt down the subs and protect their crucial supply lines.
Designed by retired Royal Navy Officer and submarine commander Andy Benford, and developed deep beneath the waves, They Come Unseen is an asymmetrical strategy game of bluff and deception that uses two boards, one for action on the surface, seen by both players, and one for movement underwater, seen only by the submarine commanders. The game also comes with specially designed control panels to help keep track of vital information such as fuel, ammunition and current cruising depth.”
Happy sunday!
big fan of a cider they serve in my local called Naval Gazer, at about 8% after half a dozen pints it does what it says on the label…
@warzan i think you mean Red Robin (Alex Ross creation for Kingdom Come) or Red Hood who was the resurrected Jason Todd.
Happy Sunday
@warzan I thought on the front stage you mentioned that you were going to cover some stuff about the TY bootcamp? or did i just mishear that?
Ok Naval wargaming
The descision on Naval period to choose is so interesting
@lloyd wants Age of Sail @warzan wants WW1 and @johnlyons wants WW2
each have their merits and some good games
My view yes Sails of Glory is your x-wing equivilent for Naval action in the Age of Sail. its a neat little game but it gets boring after a few games. Well it did for me but then again I have played several other Age of Sail (AoS just to confue everyone….lol) games. Simon has actually got a really quick play set of rules that he wrote which I think I posted a link to last year at some point somewhere in the Historical forum. These if you use tumblin dice ships you game get a great game for a fraction of the cost of the Sails of Glory which the ships are way over priced to expand on in my opinion.
In WW1 the big ships came out to play and there are some truely interesting games to be had jutland being the biggest fleet battle in history but to do that justice it takes time to play as there are 249 warships involved…lol
In WW2 there are several engagements that took place that have fleets and the next article in the series will cover one of these 🙂
lots of rules out there as well
However One of my favourite period of naval warfare is ACW and I am hoping to pull together an article on this for this series as I have quite a few 1/300 and 1/600 boats for this
1/300 or 6mm
1/600
to give some comparision in the scale of the boats in the background is the 1/600 model of HMS Hood against USS Ironside (the one with the masts an Ironclad) the CCS Virginia (Merrimack) and a japanese WW2 escort.
However one thing to remember you can do naval gaming relatively cheaply so you can actually do more than one period:-)
Beasts of war really need to get into dystopian wars.
It’s a fantastic naval (and ground/air if you want it to be) system.
The game is fun, simple yet deep due to all the special rules for different countries/ships.
The game mechanics have exploding 6’s, cinematic moments galore and every ship from big to small can make a difference and has different strategic advantages (I.e. Fast vs big)
Even the 28mm game has so much depth.
I have always fancied having a league were you have your own country/islands to defend. It starts with a naval battle. For every ship that makes it to the island the attacker gets x points of land vehicles for the land battle (in the same scale as the naval battle) while the defender has extra points for fortifications that They have on the island. Then if the attacker gets through that you play a 28mm skirmish battle for the base on the island.
That way it truly is hard to take an island as it should be.
Dystopian wars is always one of my favourite return to games. It’s just awesome.
Warren and team need to have a good look and explore of it. John and Lloyd would love the 28mm tanks, the empire of the blazing sun keho tank is the best resin kit I have ever put together (and I have had tons of forge world kits including 2 Titans). Also the keho tank in the 28mm game is one of the largest kits where as the same tank in the larger scale land/sea game is the smallest tank.
Please guys have a delve into it.
Time to get Dr. Dave over for some DW action
I like it some much that I have 5 fleets which at least field 2 battleships – and both my EotBS and FSA are in the 10K range
@warzan Battle of New Orleans was the War of 1812 – while Britain is fighting Napoleon in Europe the faction known as the war hawks in US senate pushed for war against the UK. Britain had been press ganging UK born citizens into the navy that they found on neutral merchant ships, so a lot of Brits and Irish who moved to the states for example who ended up working as sailors, if a British ship came along (since concepts of citizenship weren’t really defined back then) ‘ah, he’s got an Irish accent, must be a deserter!! Royal Marines! Take him below!!’
Not surprising that it really annoyed the Americans, between that and between our confiscating of American ships headed for French ports it wasn’t difficult for the war hawks to push for starting a war against the UK. Start of the war was brutal guerilla warfare in the woods of Canada and ship to ship engagements at see, wasn’t until 1814 when the war in Europe was coming to a close that Britain sent a large number of reinforcements. The Canadians had held the yanks off, so now it was time to go on the offensive. Brits burned Washington DC to the ground (it’s why it’s the White House, after we’d defeated the local garrison we torched the place so they had to repaint it afterwards, peel the paint off and the scorch marks are still there…) but we struggled to crack Boston and New Orleans. Mind you, by this point we were sick of fighting after war with Bonaparte for 20 years and just wanted to draw it to a close. Peace deal was signed, Canada retained it’s identity and barring a few blips we’ve generally got on ok ever since. War of 1812 would use your typical Napoleonic minis, and for the yanks you can easily convert British plastics into American troops as each of the states had it’s own uniform variations.
@lloyd the Saxons did develop a navy to fight the Vikings, King Alfred is arguably the founder of the English navy, after holding off the initial Viking attacks on Wessex (rest of the country had already fallen) he built a series of forts called burghs to protect the countryside and the estuaries then built a navy to harass the Vikings wherever they could. Got to think of the Vikings as being a collection of groups, each ship hosting a warband and it’s own leader, the leaders could have a tendency to hate each other as much the Saxons. Also, being the pirates that they were, soon as they heard there was plunder to be had or that an army was being assembled you’d get viking ships from all over the place racing to catch up and join in the fun. It’s at this point that the English ships would pick off these lone ships full of reinforcements – check out the new series on BBC, the Last Kingdom – based on Bernard Cornwell’s books (awesome books by the way) and it’s all about the Viking invasion of Britain
Awesome post 🙂
Looking forward to seeing the Last Kingdom – write by Bernard Cornwell, so it is a well researched work of fiction.
And both sides where split internally along lines of personal rivalries, and marriage unions, some even a cross the line
I’ve watched the first two and there really good
I am quite enamored of those Alfred he Great-era Bernard Cromwell books: The second I saw those Saga boxes it was the first thing I thought about. His descriptions of shield wall battles are so evocative they make you want to game them so badly. They would go great with that Dark Ages wooden palisade fort that was on kickstarter a few weeks ago.
As for the Battle of New Orleans, here in the states it is the only thing most people remember about the War of 1812. It was a two year war that gave us The Star Spangled Banner, gave our flagship the U.S.S Constitution it’s nickname “Old Ironsides”, The battle cry “Don’t give up the ship!” and many key things in American culture, but it mostly went very badly for us, with the aforementioned burning of the capital. But a future president shot the crap out of the Brits in a foggy swamp days AFTER we already signed a peace treaty with the U.K., and as far as we care, that was the ENTIRE war. Hey, anything that makes it look like a win. 😀
To be fair, the Johnny Horton song probably helped a lot. 🙂
to be honest no one knows a thing about it in the UK, everyone knows about the battle of Trafalgar, of Napoleon and the Waterloo campaign but the American theatre is completely ignored in our culture, sure, we know of the war if independence but not much of the detail – odd really, us Brits usually have a fascination with our defeats (like Hastings or Rorke’s Drift, we don’t really get many but when we do they’re wipe outs)
Great books, the show does lurch away from them but it still captures much of the feel of it. Just read the new one, Warriors of the Storm (and by the sounds of things, there could well be just the one more before the series comes to a close…)
Rorke’s Drift? What am I on about?!! Battle of Isandlwana.
From a Canadian perspective (in song)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tRwiH18QwpU
Hello Love the post. Fun fact did you all know that the battle was fought two weeks after the war was over, that is the battle of New Orleans .
Also King Alfred hired the Norsemen who had settled in England to help build his navy. Much the same as the saying,”Takes a thief to catch a thief!”
It’s years since I read but wasn’t the original Master and Commander book not British vs an American privateer raider?
indeed it was @torros, but they changed it when they did the film
They decided that the Americans would not watch a film where they were the bad guys…lol. I personally wish that they had done the books as a series not mashed together the plots and bits from several books.
Samurai battles could be the sengoku Jidai, samurai vs samurai or it could be the Japanese Korean war where the Japanese samurai invaded Korea and fought against the Koreans and later the Chinese. The Perrys have ranges for both of these conflicts but would have to do the plastic tooling as they are all metal. I reckon your guess of Agincourt is far more accurate as they have lately been hard at work making plastics for that period.
Could do what I’ve done which is to go into a bit of alternate history – you could do Kublai Khan’s Mongol invasion, a couple of boats did actually make it before the invasion was called off but imagine if the weather had been slightly different. Fireforge Mongols, Wargames Factory samurai – awesome!! What would really excite me, particularly with us only burying Richard the III not so long ago would be a box for the battle of Bosworth. Only stumbling block would be the lack of any plastic 28mm medieval artillery for such a set but you could theoretically do without and have the box focused on the efforts of Norfolk’s vanguard, the Ricardian infantry and archers slogging it out with Tudor’s mercenary French pikemen
Great XLBS but where was the info on the Team Yankee Armies that was mentioned in the front stage show and in the Bootcamp Green Room?
I’m waiting for this aswell, 🙂
AWI also had the redcoats fielding German Mercenaries in a fair number. From Hanover which if I recall it right were in a crown union with the UK.
In the Patriot there is some regular engagements in the background, before Mel Gibson run mad with his irregulars (not mercenaries as they were paid regular wages (or not) but they were not pros hired to do the job)
As for Samurais vs. Ninjas there is Rise of the Kage
On to WW2 -and a peace in the west – Fatherland, you can find the movie version with Ruthger Hover. Have an unending war in the east.
The GHQ ships were all WW2, not WW1 -but I am with @lloyd I want Pirates! on the table top but with fleets not single ship combat
King George was Elector of Hanover (not strictly in union with the UK but closely aligned, German geopolitics at the time is confusing as hell tbh) but they drew heavily on the presence of Hanoverian and more generally, Hessian infantry to bolster Britain’s forces in the Americas. Hesse-Anhalt was an ally of Britain (confederations of German states allied with the UK against France, with Europe at peace the Germans sent troops to help their ally just as we’d done in Europe)
I am just pleased I recalled that it were Hanover, even if I forgot the Hessians
‘Trafalgar’ is another game I’ve played done by the Warhammer Historical department of Workshop I think. We use Langton’s Ships to play it. It really got me reading up on Nelson and the times around then.
When Boswell was mentioned all I could think of was Boswell and Johnston in Scotland fighting Aliens
Pulp City is a fantastic game. It’s not set on any of the big comic universes its based on its own. The characters do have there own background but there’s not loads, just enough to get your mouth wet and you make up your own.
Some pics of stuff

That Eldar looks fantastic
I like the Sputnik guy for the Red Republic, he reminds me of Modok, and that fiery dude looks a little like Firestorm.
More like the Human Torch. Firestorm obviously inspired this one:

Great show!
Great show again guys and the Perry twins looked to have made an excellent box set. Don’t know if I missed it yesterday; but who won the fantasy scenery set?
@warzan
With regard to your alternate WWII-you have to remember Germany (Hitler) declared war on the US a few days after Pearl Harbor. If he hadn’t, would Roosevelt have been able to steer the US public opinion into the European war? Japan had launched a sneak attack and the US, who cares about Germany? Maybe afterwards.
So, just that one different decision could change things immensely.
Wizard School looks interesting . I imagine in that school your homework could eat your dog . IRC the Russians received some of those M16 Quad 50 cal halftracks in Lend Lease , so should be good for a Soviet Dust Army . And the band Saxon is still alive and kicking ass , a new album ( Battering Ram ) should be out soon in Canada , released last month in the UK I believe . Been a huge fan since the 80s !
Car boot sale = flea market
Old money to new 😉
The Bash Street Kids, yes! I forgot to comment on that on yesterday’s video. Justin could play as Smiffy lol. 😛
Nice find with the tanks at The Works!
Maybe @lloyd could have a go at that naval game he liked on here? I liked the puffs of smoke from the cannons. 😀
SoG is AWESOME!!! I have almost all the ships and you can tailor the “depth” of details you want to play (the wind is murder by the way). Very good terrain islands are out there to buy as well.
Loyd: you cant really adjust the ship on the base….the base represents the arc of fire form the guns…so if you rotate the ship in its base…it will mess up the arc (wedge) of fire for that broad side.
Also look at Osprey Publishing “Fighting Sail”. I have gone through the book and it is decent as well. You can use the SoG minis to play it too.
Happy Sunday everyone! can’t wait to read the naval article I know you want to do historical but would you have a look at Firestorm Armada sometime thats what I think of when you say fleet action, big space battles offer something more interesting and different.
Cheers.
Warren,
This smacks heavily of an old PC game called ‘Freedom Force’. It was superb and this reminds me of it so much. Take a look at more info and hero villain roster https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Force_(2002_video_game)#Supervillains
Freedom Force is a great game (as is Freedom Force vs The Third Reich!). Pulp City is a great game in it’s own right though.
I like the look of both the ‘Don’t Die’ game and the ‘Wizard School’ game. I like the art direction in both – I think in both cases the game suits what the games are trying to do.
I agree with Lloyd that I don’t recognise a lot of what appears in US TV shows about high school, although I suspect they’re not very representative of what most US kids go through either. Anyway, I feel like through TV I get enough exposure to at least a ‘Hollywood’ US culture that I can understand what in this case the Wizard School game is about. Certainly enough that I’d probably enjoy playing the game.
Hey guys at BoW you might want to check out the naval wargame Victory at Sea and Victory at Sea: Dreadnoughts. They are pretty basic rules but a lot of the naval game get a little Heavy on the rules….also if you want to check out the movie or book Fatherland. The background is a what if the Germans stopped the invasion and won WWII and now thirty years later Germany seeks an alliance with the US to help against Russia. The main story is about an American reporter and a German homicide detective uncovering the truth about what happen to the Jews during war as Germany tries to cover it up.
As for naval war gaming, look at pre-dreadnought era. Stll has your recognisable battleships, cruisers, destroyers etc, but gunnery ranges are that much shorter so means that the guns can’t cover the entire table. Can heartily recommend the 3D printed ships from War Times Journal in the U.S.
http://www.wtj.com/wtj0155.html
@lloyd that looks awesome. Thanks mate 🙂
@buggeroff, It’s not zombies – but it is cool 🙂
Happy Sunday Great show guys,
And @warzan morphs in to Sheldon? Lol The Germans sort of stay away from US shipping at the start to prevent them joining the war even after the Lusitania? Liner was sunk Americans has plans to invade Canada if Britain fell to the Germans. So the Germans had Ork tanks? as well love the vehicles did you like the (dust) walkers in Dr who @lloyd > try the battle of the river plate 1 pocket battleship V 3 cruisers. Love the tank & elder @johnlyons love the books put those on a shelf will make you/ (I) more educated?? not The tree man reminds me of the spirit of the woods from robin of Sherwood, interesting card games the wizard game is good that everyone has to work to win.
The Germans said they would sink an ship if any nationality if it was known to be carrying arms and ammunition to the allies. The Lusitania was
OH right….????…cheers @warzan for the heads up iv been waiting to hear from you about doing the US airborne army for you but you never contacted me, shall i take it now you don’t need me ?????
If you can get Justin to do a hypnotic past life regression, can you get Lloyd to do a hypnotic high school regression? There seems to be a lot going on there in his head regarding that time period.
Loved the weekender.
Saga! Starter sets??! Excellent news.
Perry Twins! Battle in a box??! Excellent, please give us Culloden or Bosworth Field (almost put Boswell Field)
Though a 95th rifles set against some voltiguiers in a true ‘skirmish’ game would be really cool. Grasshopping about in pairs from cover to cover, firing and loading, hoping the dice roll their way sounds fun.
Don’t Die card game looks fun. Quick, easy, silly.
Wizard school – I’m with Lloyd. I don’t empathise with or enjoy the American high school movies much and feel UK schooling has a different dynamic. Yes being good at sport generated a clique and sadly those driving to be top of the class were often marginalised by the majority. Some kids were more popular but in my experience UK kids don’t fall into the ‘jocks’, ‘nerds’, ‘in-crowd’ boxes as neatly as the US kids are purported to. The movies seem to portray US kids and their loving parents as all driving for A’s at all times for fear of being considered an utter failure, in a way that at my comprehensive I saw only a handful of students obsessed to that degree. The majority of kids in most my schooling were judging each other by retention of facts that they considered everyone should know and only those in the lowest class or remedial extra support classes were considered worthy of ridicule.
Sea warfare – I read the first article and liked it. I prefer the tall ships napoleonics era because you have some really cool dynamics and brutality that engines and iron clad ships did away with. Trafalgar was utter carnage and horror, but had been skillfully fought, against the elements and before the boarding actions and bloodshed was very strategic and tactically thought out. I like the fact that the two conflicting styles of naval warfare were at odds and put to the test that day. The ranged attack, two fleets sailing in parallel lines trying to master longer range shots over a prolonged engagement or the sail headlong into that line at intervals and get upclose heavy broadsides blasting holes through the entire length of an opposition vessel. It feels like the type of quandary napoleonic army general’s faced with forming in line, column or square.
Thought provoking and fun. Thanks BoW.
Happy sunday! Those Pulp City minis look very nice, gonna check on it.
Good evening, everyone . . .
Thanks for the shout-out guys . . . the American Revolution is definitely one of my favorite periods (almost as much as WW2), Especially the northern theaters in New York, Canada, Vermont, etc.
34:20 – you are right to largely dismiss the idea of a German nuclear weapons program. Pretty much a non-starter, especially after Norwegian resistance fighters had blown up most of the German heavy water infrastructure.
Another big “what if” that’s interesting . . . if the American entry into World War II had been delayed, Stalin might not have been able to deploy reserves out of Siberia JUST IN TIME for the decisive defense of Moscow in December 1941. These were deployed against a possible threat from Japan (they had fought large battles in 1938 and 1939), but once Soviet spies assured Stalin that Japan was moving against the US at Pearl Harbor and the Philippines, he knew Siberia was safe and could shift those crucial divisions against the Germans . . . again, JUST IN TIME.
@johnlyons – that’s a great looking Panther. Then again, don’t Panthers almost always look great? 😀
Is that rocket launching halftrack supposed to be “Weird” War II? They actually had those. Those are basically 15cm nebelwerfers bolted onto the side of a SdKfz 251.
Hey, on the Boot Camp free gaming time . . . wild idea . . . anyone up to taking down the World War 2.5 game and giving it a go?
Count me in on WW2.5 hex counters what not to like
Awesome, @rasmus . If they still have the compete set there in the studio, we’ll set it up and play a 15-day (5-turn) game. These usually take 2-3 hours, once set up is complete.
In terms of who the Japanese Samurai should fight, you should go with the fights against Korea. That way we might be able to see Korean Turtle Ships!
Actually, if you’re at all interested in the Japanese and Korean battles of the era, I would really recommend this YouTube series.

@warzan and team – yes, the WW2 was the “age of the carrier,” especially in the Pacific . . . BUT . . .
There were a large number of very interesting battleship, cruiser, and destroyer gunnery battles in the Pacific, including the very last battleship vs. battleship engagement (San Bernadino Straight, October 1944). These all took place AT NIGHT, when carrier aircraft of the day could not fly.
And they are NOT boring. 🙂 They take place in narrow channels and island chains just like you imagine.
Lastly, they were often balanced. Japanese and American forces were very closely matched in a lot of these, especially the ones in the Solomon Islands campaign. Examples include:
Savo Island
Tassaforonga
Cap Esperance
The Tokyo Express
Some of these WERE battleship vs. battleship fights, there’s one between USS South Dakota and IJN Kirishima that was nasty in and among these small island chains. And while the battleships and heavy cruisers hammer away at each other, the light cruisers and destroyers are trading torpedo fire.
The once caveat . . . these fights ALL TOOK PLACE AT NIGHT. Once the sun came up, the carrier was again the queen of the sea.
I’ve been playing World of Warships and it’s pretty fun. It’s a video game and not a tabletop game, but you could check it out for inspiration. Broadsides don’t happen very often, and when they do it means someone is about to choke down some torpedoes.
I’ve always been fascinated by the Monitor and the Merrimack. They represented the next step in warship design philosophy going forward. I also get that same sense from watching the original Gundam anime. It’s really neat to see how technology evolves from that initial flashpoint of prototypes duking it out.
I like that the Battle of Jutland feels exactly like a war game outcome. The Germans sunk more ships and scored some objective points, but the victory condition of keeping 75 % of their fleet intact was failed and the German fleet was confined to minor skirmishs for the rest of the war. 🙂
Guys, for fleet battles check out the Korean – Japanese conflict and Admiral Yi’s fleet against the Japanese.
There’s a really good youtube video series explaining what happened there including the Korean turtle ship!

I think that could be a very interesting game to play tactically.
http://www.admiraltytrilogy.com/cas.html
some very good rules for ww1 and ww2 wargaming at sea
Of the two factions from the Saga plastic starter boxes I would say you would be more suited to Vikings @warzan
The last 5 minutes made me feel warm around my heart. So I wasn’t the only guy in school who got picked last for sports and everybody thought he was a loser because of the games he played. Now of course I know that nerds are just the best kind of people and the others were just mean people who couldn’t let us be they we were.
Once a nerd, always a nerd. Don’t want to be anything else.
Happy sunday,
When Naval go : Anglo-Dutch Wars, the first 4 wars to be conducted entirely at sea.
Big fan of that time period ( probably because i am Dutch) , like “master and commander” go watch “Michiel de Ruyter” or alternative titel “Admiral” , next to lot of boring politics, the see battles are Great.
When the young republic of The Netherlands is attacked by England, France and Germany and the country itself is on the brink of civil war, only one man can lead the county’s strongest weapon, the Dutch fleet: Michiel de Ruyter.
Being one of the smallest country in europa, is like david vs goliath, witch i realy like.
Happy Sunday ( Tuesday) weird – I just came back with same model for my axis for dust and you just talked about it in WXL – @lloyd I have stummel model and it is 100% exactly same size wise! so dont worry mate it will fit perfect to rest of your friend army, now I am thinking about buying more and Works selling Puma that has Dustyfied card – so I recon you should buy one too.
sorry it was not a puma it was sd kfz 234 but its sold out online.
Warren, Mongoose Publishing Victory at Sea naval rules are best. Get yourself some WWI British and German fleets … No carriers and lots of battleships. Best naval war game ever would be Wooden Ships and Iron Men, while another was Flat Tops. I think they are both out of print now. BTW Lloyd, I too have Age of Sail and it is great fun, the X Wing of historical as someone said.
Nice to have a bit of focus on naval.
Completely agree with others on Cornwell’s Last Kingdom series … A must read for Dark Age fans. Unfortunately the TV series hasn’t hit the far off shores of Australia yet.
The Pulp City book is filled with all kinds of little story hooks that fire up the imagination for gaming in the gaps. The creators have actually put it together in such a way as to encourage that kind of game experience. Not to mention that the minis are fantastic…and the rule book is awesome looking.
Happy Sunday! (didnt get to se the episode until today, wednesday..)
Awesome that you plan to get some Dust on the camera. I think Paolo and Dust is sort of getting back on track, any way its a great game. Big fan of the Battlefield version and most guys here are into the game, to bad we can buy nothing for it..
Naval Warfare, Modern Naval Warfare. On name; Tom Clancy
You are starting to get hyped on the cold war with team yankee? Then get yourself to also read Red Storm Rising. There are a few boardgames for that are nice aswell 😉
But on the Naval BAttle part you have an other of Clancys work, the Harpoon series. And Warren, what I think you will like about modern naval battle – how to do you bring down a modern aircraft carrier? You use nuke! If that doesnt hype you, I dont what will 😛
You may begin checkin out some minis here http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/1-2400.html#order=name&limit=36&p=1&dir=ASC&cat%5B%5D=59580
THere are other manufacturers and they all make a bunch of countries fleets. A big part of modern naval battle is, beside firing cruise missiles, airbattles, and you do have in scale mini for this. BUt if you want a good and fun modern game there isnt one, really, at least no that I know of. I have my homebrewed mods. But is an intresting this to get into but mainly its to broaden a subject you walk into, like; the cold war. You get into the land warfare part and get all the fun, you play platoon battle in 28 or 20mm scale, scale up to company at 15mm or go battalion at 6 or even 3mm. Then you check out the airial warfare and perhaps after that the naval. But then you want the campaing that hooks it all togethere, kinda like what GW was doing with 40k before, what ever they are up to now. Epic-battalion, 40k – coy/plt, necromunda – semi rpg, gothic – naval and so on. You wanna go full circle with your games ^^
I just played my biggest Firestorm Armada yesterdaym great game on the “naval” topic.
I just finished this, late I know, but Hank Green is John Green’s brother (as in Fault in our Stars) and has a great youtube channel Crash Course/ Vlogbrothers
I was recently looking for a notebook with a 3d cover like the ones @warzan was showing. I found this artist who makes incredible handcrafted books. You should check her out here – https://www.facebook.com/MilleCuirs?fref=pb&hc_location=profile_browser
