Just woke up to a false widow walking along my back. Needless to say I am tired but wide awake and unable to get back to sleep as it disappeared down the side of my bed. Happy Weekend guys from a sleepy Gaz!
Careful a Friend of mine ended up in hospital for 4 days after being bitten by one of them little buggers
Yeah I had heard they can give a nasty bite for the UK, this is not the first time this has happened to me, the last time it was a Brown Recluse while on exercise in Nevada and they are a very nasty beasty. Good thing is neither tend to bite unless you aggravate them. Bad news is I need to find it before I go to bed tonight hehe.
Morning All
STUNNING competition.
It’s an afternoon show for me. If you go evening it would be very early am.
Come to Australia for PAX in October.
GF9 didn’t just get Frank Herbert’s novels they also got all the books by his son going back before the Butlerian Jihad. The scope they have to work with is huge. If they build it I will buy.
It’s the Weekend!!
If I recall correctly, Dune was one of the first RTS games out there focussing on spice collection with sandworms hovering around. Actually a simple search has just found this:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_based_on_Dune
So a CCG and 2 board games have previously existed. Who’s got any of this?
A friend of mine does have the Avalon Hill Dune game, we played alot. It is a lot of fun and I would be quite happy if they do a reprint of it.
I have the CCG. Pretty fun actually.
The CCG is a bit dry but quite fun, it really captures the spirit of the Dune books.
I’d love to see an updated version of the Avalon Hill game, it’s great but the components are a bit on the crude side. Fantasy Flight did a re-skin of it that takes place in the Twilight Imperium universe, but I’d rather it stay a Dune game.
OK – FFG ‘unique’ games… The cynic in me is screaming “exploitative business model aimed at repeat purchases” while the business person in me is thinking “clever model chaps”.
Is a velociraptor too obvious? You’ve got to give it to the cunning ****s.
Happy Weekend!!
I’m just back from a very hard-fought but very profitable Necromunda game with my Eschers, the Tiger Mamas. 🙂
My dinosaur of choice is a Suchomimus, I really like the look of this predator with its blend of a Tyrannosaur style body and an almost crocodile style head. Drowned Earth is doing a great job of promoting itself with recent events and by expanding its lore and overall playability. Looking forward to seeing more.
The question about what game would you use a universal ruleset for is pretty easy for me. On my trip to Gen Con Dawn and Gianna were kind enough to take me and the guys to the Chicago Field Museum, a beautiful building full of history and I got to achieve one of my bucket list. I got to see the remains of the Ghost and the Darkness, two man eating lions that caused a lot of problems for the British railroad company in Africa. I would like to design a game around dealing with this menace which caused the death of 28 people and which quickly became a legend to the locals.
It was great to see the remains of something real that had inspired a legend and even a movie to be created, so much of what we do in our hobby is inspired by or based upon myths and legends or ties in with the supernatural, rarely do we see the physical embodiment’s of those legends though.
Awesome dino knowledge sir!
Cheers buddy
Interesting game. I am intrigued.
A stunning prize!!
Good morning all – just short of 2:00 AM here. To be honest, Weekender is often a late night show for us here! 😀
YAY, Drowned Earth Weekender, awesome.
I love the Dimetrodon, in TDE he could work as walking LOS blocker.
Snap on Dimetrodon
Please stay as a morning show. It’s the only time I have time to see it before all the demanding critters in the household wakes up.
It shall go into the collective learning banks and we shall see!
The Drowned World is a 1962 science fiction novel by British writer J. G. Ballard. The novel depicts a post-apocalyptic future in which to global warming has caused the majority of the earth to become uninhabitable. The story follows a team of scientists researching ongoing environmental developments in a flooded, abandoned London. No dinosaurs 🙂
Everything is better with dinosaurs.
All good clean honest fun. I can’t believe how much Ben swears making Lance have to blur out his words! Oh still enjoying the ‘hubs’. And the out take was great.
I still think of the Triceratops as the perfect dinosaur. Attack AND defence, check!
And first thing in the morning works great for me as I can watch it before the significant other wakes up. Jammy dance for the win.
Good morning. Have great day of gaming!
Happy weekend everyone!
Happy Weekend! No, morning is better. One drinks in the evening 🙂
I think it needs to stay as a morning show. I wake up make coffee and for an hour or so it seems like Saturday Morning Swap Shop is back on the telly with Warren as Noel Edmonds,Justin as Keith Chegwin,Ben as John Craven and Sam as Posh Paws. Weekender really needs a Maggie Philbin type on the show. My brain can’t process who of the BoW staff that might be at this time in the morning
Although after seeing the hub break on the show John might have the Maggie Philbin angle covered
But I fancied Maggie Philbin… actually, if you squint when Jo(h)nie’s on?
Weekender is a morning show! Goes with my breakfast. I can’t watch it without my oat meal on weekend mornings.
GW could try to continue publishing more stuff for Relic 😉
I think that falls to WizKids now who are going to be working on the board game side of things.
In a word Eisenhorn. I think that series is ideal for a 40k movie/tv series, it would serve as a fantastic introduction to people who don’t know the IP, Inquisitor demon hunter, retinue of other characters, love interests, space marines, it’s ideal. If anything gets made I really hope it is an Eisenhorn film/series, I genuinely think it would work well.
that was exactly what I thought.
what are you talking about Morning vs Evening: are you forgetting time zones, at 12:30am PMT its 08:30am GMT so I wait for you to release the video on friday
+1 for keeping Weekender as a morning show. Great way to kick off the weekend with some painting.
I still haven’t had time to start painting my Drowned Earth pledge. The minies are fantastic and I’ve really enjoyed reading the background and the stories from the rulebook, well worth the extra effort James put into it.
I vote morning. My weekend plans start with getting up, eating breakfast, sitting down at my desk, putting the weekender on and starting to paint.
My favourite dinosaur has to be the blind one: the doyouthinkhesawus 🙂
Awesome show as usual.
I thought that was the one eyed one, maybe your thinking of doyouthinkheheardus or doyouthinkhesmeltus, all from the same gene stock I think so I get them muddled 😀
Yay! The weekender is here 🙂
@warzan As long as I get to see your lovely faces, preferably twice a week, I wont be picky about the hour. Though I do love my morning Weekenders in bed, I see no reason why I couldn’t enjoy my evening Weekenders in bed with the lot of you as well. Or even an midday/afternoon Weekender lie down. I’ll use any excuse to revisit my bed and get a nap 🙂
Also…absolutely killed me with the hub!!! Thank you. 😀 😀 😀
As for a custom skirmish game, I would love a Vampire – Vampire Hunters game, with poor civilians caught in the crossfire. I would like to turn it into a campaign through the ages, starting with the dark ages (or even before that time maybe), and then each game progress up through time. Could have some real fun settings, like Vampires fighting with the Nazis in World War II and the Vampire Hunters with the allied forces or Vampires in ancient Rome or Greece. And with each game lost or won through times, the factions get different penalties/bonuses. Then add in the poor civilians, who knows nothing about this fight, but gets caught in the middle of it. I imagine they should be played by the game AI itself (maybe a bit like what I saw in Battle Systems Core Space). If a Vampire can grab a civilian, he might heal himself or get stronger, but will be relative week while feeding. The Vampire Hunters having to try save and protect the civilians, and for each that survive and get to the hunters, maybe they can get equipped with some low lvl weapons and thus aid the hunters. I haven’t given it all too much thought, just think it could be a fun setting, that you could even take into the future, for some sci-fi scenarios as well.
I absolutely love the Drowned Earth setting and the description of how it plays. But I better opt out of the prize. I already have way too many games that see way too little love. This prize should go to someone that can give it the attention and care it deserves.
Good luck everybody 🙂
@aurorainbag Really like your vampire idea and it’s use of time as part of the campaign.
I know it’s not a universal ruleset, but wouldn’t FrostGrave fill in Ben’s wishes? I haven’t played myself, but it looks so much fun campaigning with dueling wizards and hired muscle!
Frostgrave is pretty good but I mean teams of Wizards going up against each other. Not entirely required to fit into the Fantasy setting either.
Imagine a cabal of Necromancers versus a gang of Elementalists!
Happy Weekend all.
A 40K TV show or film? just imagine the NERD RAGE!
Holy cow! These dinos are sweet 🙂
And the favorite dino would be a Velociraptor. It’s the size of a turkey. It weights 80kg. It’s small fast and deadly just as my girlfriend is when she’s mad. It hunts in packs.
As for my favourite dinosaur, I always found myself prefering the interesting herbivores like the heavy headed pachycephalosaurus or parasaurolophus. Then there’s the armoured tanks like Ankylosaurus or Triceratops, again great dinos.
But, I have give my winner to something like Argentinosaurus, or which ever is the current largest Titanosaur. I struggle to imagine what the sight would be of a herd of things this large shaking the earth with every step.
Yay Orks Drift! (you can then follow up with the Tragedy of McDeath)
Drowned earth is looking really cool (favourite dino has to be Dimetrodon, huge back fins for the win)
keep it a morning show (even though I only get to it in the evening most of the time)
For us in New Zealand it is an evening show – dropping between 4pm to 6pm depend on when UK and NZ are on Summer time or not.
If you did change it around:
Weekender would be a Sunday morning show
XLBS would be a Monday morning show, so some people might not see it until Monday evening due to work schedules.
And any one suffering the Monday Blues can tell you, Monday isn’t part of the weekend.
I will totally use a universal skirmish rule system for Ninja Turtles! I have the IDW board game but never been arsed to play it. But I would absolutely break the models out to play a full tabletop game!
We can now tell what colour (some) dinosaurs were as you can find fossilised remnants of the pigments in feathers, skin etc https://www.wired.co.uk/article/paleocolour-dinosaur-facts
Weekend to watch from Saturday morning please! It can be evening or anytime.
Drowned Earth for me has sparked an interest outside my historical world. Fantastic minis and opportunities to go crazy with terrain!
Weekender late night!
A raunchier, sexier version of the Weekender. More innuendo, more double entendres more fondling of mats and more minds melted!
Presented by Warren, Justin and Megan Fox 😀
As a kid both the Stegosaurus and the Iguanodon were my favourite dinosaurs.
As i grew older, i was more and more intrigued by carnivorous species, especially the Velociraptors since JP1.
As long as it is a decent show I can watch over a weekend I don’t really mind when it goes out..lol
Can’t deny, even finding out they would have been fairly dim-witted I still have a soft spot for the Stegosaurus, both because they look freaking cool, and their Dinobot incarnation – Snarl – was my first ever Transformer 🙂
Otherwise love how the Drowned Earth is progressing. Still gutted I never got around to upgrading in the Backerkit…
Its a MEGLADON
Sorry , meant MEGADON !
Time to invest in a sea mat.
ooohhhh – do love the drowned earth stuff. Such a rich idea with stunning minis
Stick with the morning show.. !
Hyped about Dune, and Justin’s comment around Spartacus would work really well. Hoping for a more ‘Raider’ style table top game, as in spice raids or House spoiling attacks over full battle games (not something the first book really covers, though I suppose until the final attack through the shield wall, most of the engagements were company level). The follow on Jihad is a completely different Worm.
Drown Earth sounds interesting, but not sure about the way the ‘campaign’ system was discussed – more like a limited campaign pack if only for 2 players. The models are really nice though, and I wouldn’t object to having them in my collect.
Picks of the week for me have to be speed freeks and Black powder 2 – Although I desperately don’t want to do black powder, it is tempting model for the pre-order is stunning.
As to generic rules, I think they are great for the diverse collections and those gamer groups that have a shared vision of stories they want to explore. Or a large odd narrative in mind – time travelling adventure type thing. I think they tend to suffer in either being too generic or requiring so much work they might as well be home brew rules.
My favorite dinosaur the Edmontasaurus, I would always cheer for it as a child when I watched the dino special hosted by Christopher Reeves.
I really like the look of Drowned Earth, and my favorite dinosaur is the Triceratops
I wanted to get this game for me and my friend but sadly we didn’t have enough money to get it in our hands
Rorke’s/Ork’s Drift you say, well I know I’d be interested. Every year is an anniversary, next year shall be the 140th of the Drift. John Stallard is responsible for part of my interest he wrote a fascinating article while he was still at GW about the action and recreating it. Although he tried to separate it from the film and I chose to embrace the film wholesale.
I sold Orcs drift a while back for silly money. Still have McDeath though
I’ve gotta say my favorite Dino is one not trying to eat me
Happy Weekend everyone 😀 .
I think a movie / tv series would be great,as you guys mentioned,Gaunts Ghosts or an Inquisitorial Warband would be a good jump off point. That way,you can insert ( oh err 😉 ) Warren’s love interest angle without having a Space Marine be a part of it as it would be so against all the Marine fluff to try and make the Marine a part of it anyway.
Regarding a GW 40k movie or TV series, Rogue Trader would be the most flexible vehicle. You have the romantic potential and the ability to interact with every element of the 40k universe. And the “Rogue Trader” title ties in with the origin of the universe and what it has developed into.
Drowned Earth is such a great great game. So fluid and cinematic. My favourite dino will always be triceratops. Yes I know it’s a bit of a cliché but I’ve always loved it.
The Weekender is my Sat/Sun afternoon show as I don’t paint much in the mornings. But I want it there ready to go for when I’m ready, so say good morning and kick off my hobby days!
hello guys!!! happy weekender… my all time favorite dino got to be the T-REX, its the one that reminds me of my childhood, from Jurasic Park movie and he is just the coolest
My vote is for the morning.
Coolest dinosaur would be the ankylosaurus, the tank of dinosaur.
Giant Piranhas!!!! They need to make an evolved amphibious version playable. Giant Piranhas? No worries, I’ll just stay away from the riv-AAAAAAHHH!!!!
triceratops 100% all the way
Let’s keep as a morning show guys. 40K TV or movie… Horus Heresy/Game of Thrones. Demons,Titans, The Emperor, Horus and more. Drowned Earth looks quite cool.
Growing up, the triceratops was always my favorite dinosaur…still is. Just a big tank with horns. …probably wouldn’t do too well if they have to tread water though.
wake up and smell the spice. WAKE UP !!!
Dilos are beautiful models that I’d love to paint/use in Drowned Earth, but if the question is really my favorite dinosaur, its stegasaurous.
Two more things –
1. MORNING – MORNING – MORNING – Now, I am in the US, so evening wont have a big impact on me, but sometimes I make breakfast for my wife – BECAUSE SHE TELLS ME I WANT TOO!!!! and while doing so I listen to this.
2. Drowned earth is amazing and I have only holding off to play when I have more time to get a group to play more skirmish games. As for RPG – I think Savage Worlds would do great for this, and if not, then maybe a reskinned of Feng Shui, since it is amazing action pack, but would require quite a bit of rework. Either way, Drowned Earth is high on my next game list.
Morning show for me, love my coffee and Weekender. Drowned Earth looks great, I didn’t back but would love to try it. I really enjoyed the lets play demo of it.
+1 for keeping it a morning thing. But I think change is healthy, mixing up the format of the morning TV show could be rad.
On the subject of Saturday morning cartoons, as an animator your dreams are feasible, but the price tag will shock you :p
Warhammer tv show / movie easy. have a guard “Band of Brothers” during the fall of cadia.
As for a universeral rule set, the test for me is how well it allows to mix genres Magical/Fantasy vs technical modern or even sci-fi genre. Raymond Feist, Margret Weiss and others have had books of this sort, and of course things like V tv show or Necessary Evil RPG are other examples that are good tests for how the rule set allows across genres
@brennon if you want a game of wizard vs wizard combat go back and look at the old Metagaming Concepts game Wizard. Don’t despair if you can’t find a copy. Steve Jackson Games has got the rights to it now and is going to republish it.
It was/is a really brilliant stand alone magical combat game that was the follow up to Melee, a regular combat game. Both games later served as the basis of the RPG system The Fantasy Trip which added skills and character progression.
The game had lots of tactical options. For instance you could cast a spell, and if successful, make a wolf appear. What your opponent didn’t know was if that wolf was a real wolf summoned to the battle, or an image that couldn’t hurt you or an illusion that could hurt like a real wolf but could be defeated by attempting to “disbelieve” it’s existence.
The game also had a “courtesy rule” that said wizards over a certain power level couldn’t use direct attack missile spells as whoever got to go first could one shot an opponent.
Man, this is bringing back a lot of nostalgia!
In any event, check it out. It was a fun game of wizard combat.
Sounds very fun indeed! Will have to check it out @blipvertus!
I watch the normal weekender usually in the afternoon while doing some hobby. XLBS usually somewhere later in the week due to my time being more limited on a Sunday.
My favourite dinosaur is the Velociraptor. And yes, I do like it with feathers.
I would love to play a game around the Great Emu War. If you’ve never heard of this, look it up.
How can you guys not know about Car Wars and Rallyman. Rallyman will have a KS in November and the Car Wars will soon follow.
@Sam — there was already a Dune Board game in the past https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/121/dune
@Ben — There is a wizard v wizard game where everyone has spells https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjgames/the-fantasy-trip-old-school-roleplaying?ref=user_menu
As far as a game universe for universal rules, it would have to be John Carter of Mars Universe or Stargate SG-9 or Farscape
Considering your audience is international, and the show is very rarely done live…leave the show available for the mornings. Let’s face it .. we have an option to watch it whenever lol… I personally love getting into the show when making breaks for the family.
‘Wasteman’ would be the ideal catch-all ruleset with point-buy to suit your models.
Think @warzan spot on about 4Ok Universe , I’d been thinking you could play just about sci-fi genre with it, Starship Troopers , background had loads of Giant bugs without the Tyrannids, now race games, Terminator is there, Aliens etc!
Sinornithosaurus as it is a pesky venomous dinosaur 🙂
Definitely prefer the show being in the morning. The Drowned Earth looks to be a fantastic game although I have yet to play it. I always liked the flying dinosaur so for me it would be the Pteranodon. I would love to see a tabletop skirmish game for Dune.
Funny thing is that Drowned Earth pre Kickstarter did’nt grab my attention, but now I’m intrigued.
Drowned Earth looks fun.
I’m not looking for a 40k movie. Dredd was a well made movie that pleased Judge Dredd fans, but still lost money because casual moviegoers didn’t show up. I remember a review in my local newspaper that lamented the fact that Carl Urban didn’t remove his helmet. Does anyone think that a universe that is far weirder than Dredd’s won’t be butchered to fit casual moviegoers’ expectations?
Battletech – which could be called “sci-fi ‘Game of Thrones’” – could make a good movie/TV series. Space opera has had success with the Battlestar Galactica reboot and The Expanse.
Which is why I say they do it in a medium that the audience will appreciate and won’t need to go to the silver screen. Make it an anime-style adventure to go with their over the top action and you’ve got a winner on Netflix.
Battletech had a TV series which was awful. Might be interesting coming from a disgruntled Imperial Guard unit. I do think it should go back to the original origins of the game and have Space Marines and their ilk as the bad guys or would that make it too like Star Wars?
I love the look of drowned earth just did have the cash at the time
the new dino’s for the drowned earth are great looking.
I’m just going to leave this here. Rorke/Orc’s Drift Bootcamp.
If you go for evenings then you need to release Friday night and Saturday nights instead of what you do now, and I’d vote for that.
Not sure on the new Black Powder cover, edges look like flock wallpaper.
Favourite Dino has to be the mighty T-Rex
@warzan – I think you should stick to a morning show. When I watch depends on whether or not I have time to watch before my Saturday D&D campaign, but on those Saturdays I do wake up early enough I think I’d really miss it if it moved to the evenings. Another consideration is that you have an international audience and moving it to an evening might tick some of them off, specifically your Asian and Australasian viewers as due to them being so far ahead time zone wise it’d kick the show over into Sunday for them, and if XLBS was likewise moved to an evening slot, that would get kicked into Monday for them. A morning slot GMT/BST is the best slot as it allows everyone to watch both shows on the weekend without scheduling issues.
I think a WH40k film/TV series would need to focus on either the Inquisition or someone being hunted by the Inquisition (or both if you have an Inquisitor who goes rogue at some point) to work as it’d allow for that human element that’d be absent from Space Marines and allow audiences a broader view of the setting than you’d get focusing on Guard. I suppose you could do an Arbites focused story, but that runs the risk of people saying it’s just ripping off Judge Dredd.
On Dune, hopefully whatever they do with it, the minis will be compatible with one of the games set in the 40k universe; given how much 40k draws on Dune for inspiration, any Dune minis produced could probably easily be dual purposed for 40k games (Fremen as desert based IG for example).
Isn’t every year the anniversary of Roark’s Drift?
?
Anyone else want to see a fashion show of @dracs paraded around in re-enactment costumes now? ?
Advantage of 80 Marines vs a Big Ape Warren is that you could dress Sam in a gorilla costume and it’d be to scale. ?
Drowned earth is a very cool game, and I have to admire the amount of creativity, effort, blood, sweat and tears for one person to pull something like that together and make it a success.
Morning or Evening show? Well, a lot of the time I don’t get a chance to watch till a day or two after so doesn’t matter much to me. Being an evening format might be interesting, depending on how that changed the show. It is convenient having two morning shows though, to maximise the chance of watching both over the weekend.
I am super excited about a Dune RPG as I said at length when commenting on the news post about it 🙂 I am still excited!
As I said about Key Forge, what I’ve seen so far, I’m not sold on the unique game idea. The quality of the procedurally created parts shown so far, have been underwhelming, and I don’t think they add enough for what they take away. It’s a hard idea to articulate the trade-off in general terms (Key Forge it was easier in concrete terms, as I went over on the last weekender I think it was). A good analogy might be to look at computer games that are procedural vs crafted, and look at the pros and cons. It’s not so much that one is better than the other, more that personally I dislike the cons of procedural content and don’t value the pros enough. It can be really hard for a thing to be genuinely different (not just a superficial change) and be engaging, functional content, without a huge amount of work up-front.
Gangfight skirmish looks cool, so many one-offs that might make a nice unique scenario. I have found Savage Worlds can work for very small scenarios quite well, perhaps not intended to be so mechanically balanced of course, being primarily for RPG. I loved Ben’s idea for a wizard fighting game, I do love games with strong spell-crafing systems (I came very close to backing this game https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lmstudio/black-rose-wars ) it’s not exactly spell crafting, but it has some pretty cool mage-duelling options and magical interactions.
Also loved the hub break, I don’t know how many definitions there are for Hub, but I feel like we might be about to find out…
don’t stop the signal nobody stops the signal @warzan
Drowned Earth was a game I loved the look of and did back… but unfortunately had to drop out before the campaign ended… hopefully I will get hold of it one day.
Drowned Earth is looking more and more appealing for sure. With a campaign system happening just gets more appealing. Morning show. Also for the universal gaming system thinking Heman and Master of the Universe.
great show guys the Dune game will be one to watch I think.
I would buy that for a dollar
Watching in the evening. Good evening Warren!
Right there with you guys on the LOTR coming out and getting stuck into the new game system!
Please keep weekenders and XLBS coming out in the mornings! It’s my only quiet time on weekends!
Keep an eye out next week 😉
I’m on that like ‘White on Rice!’
I don
t have a favourite Dino, but i do like Blue from Jurassic World. On the other hand my 18 month old grandson loves Tyrannosaurus Rex, i took him with the misses to see Walking with Dinosaurs in Manchester a few weeks back and he went nuts he even tried to get to the T-Rex when it come on stage to hug it. As for when to air the show makes no difference to me, as i never know when i can get to watch it. Some times its in the mornings and sometimes as late as Monday (or anywhere in between), but i always watch Saturdays show followed by Sundays show. If i could get to watch it on a Saturday morning, it would be in the kitchen while cooking my full English while trying to stay awake. Cant wait to see what GW have planed with the Speed Freaks, i do like the new look and are they planning on re-vamping all the Ork vehicles......I do hope so. I have backed the KS Gangfight Skirmish Game, as i have quite a few figures from over the years i have collected. It now looks like i can start putting them to good use, and this could be a way to get my grandkids in to gaming only time will tell.Favorite dinosaur is the Triceratops. He looks the right amount of otherworldly, good stocky fellow, horns show he could mess you up but he’s not a jerk about it like some of those carnivores.
Drowned Earth looks great.
morning , look forward to it as I live in North America but that means it may not matter.
Dudes!!!! Don’t screw up my Saturday and Sunday coffee and chill time. I work hard to pay for my Backstage pass. DON’t F UP MY WEEKEND MORNINGS! ok.. now that tats over. How goes it lads?
Drowned Earth looks fun.
Gangfight sounds interesting, I’m on the lookout for a good set of simple skirmish rules with easy rules for creating model stat cards — I have a couple of games with great miniatures but not so good rules.
For favorite dinosaur I have to go with the T-Rex, especially the one from the Jurassic Park/World movies. That thing has a lot of personality…
Happy weekend!
Great Drowned Earth segment. Almost went for the KS at the time but, well, too many games at my place already! What stoppped me at the time, was the terrain… did not have anything that could do it… Plastcraft games previewed apocalipse themed terrain that could do it but, it’s also very nice to see that official terrain is on the way! My favorite dino? It’s a tie between the Triceratops (what a nice tank/possible mount!) and of course, the Raptor!
See you guys on XLBS
I would support an evening show. That would put the show in the morning on the US west coast. I would like to see a 28mm Dune skirmish game. The world is so well mapped out that the potential is nearly limitless. Frank Herbert is one of my all time favorite authors and it is nice to see his work being transformed into a table top game.
I missed out on the Drowned Earth Kickstarter and am still wishing I had not. The two groups that have most interested me are the Bondsmen and the Militia. Nothing like a chain gun or giant pick axe wielding simian to make you give the game a go.
I have pledged for the Gangfight Games Kickstarter. Like a lot of gamers I have a giant pile of minis that need to be played and I think this will be the motivator to get them painted.
Drowned earth looks really cool. The models are really fun and characterful. The gameplay sounds fun although there might be a bit of overhead to it that I am a bit weary about – having watched the Lets Play the game looks a bit slow but maybe that is just due to the filming format.
Dungeon crawl also sounds like a really fun game. However I also find the art style a bit bland. It doesn’t really scream fun and excitement to me… Will still consider it tough.
@warzan…. warlord May have game for you soon, they have been teasing it …. also mornings are best for me…. i feed the little one while watching!
My fav dino is the Utahraptor since Jurassic Park 🙂
I do prefer my Weekender shows in the morning, that way I can get to lie in bed watching it while my girlfriend «puts on her face». Choosing my favourite dinosaur is much harder. I was a real «dino-kid» growing up. I made my parents take me to the cinema to watch Jurassic Park four times when it came out, when I was around 6 pr 7 years old. It is still one of my favourite movies. I loved the Protoceratops growing up, and then it shifted to the Ankylosaurus. When Jurassic Park came out, Spielbergks version of the Velociraptor had me both fascinated and scared. Then I read the novel Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker, which introduced me to the Utahraptor. Later, when The Lost World came out, I loved all scenes including the Compsognathus. But in the end, I still have to hail to the king, baby! The mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex! Who wouldn’t want to ride one out to war, especially after watching Dino-Riders?
The dino I like the most is the stegosaurus.
The Weekender/XLBS is most certainly a morning show in this house 🙂
Get up, grab a drink, head to the mancave, switch PC on, begin watching and painting minis
I’ve backed the universal rules set not so much to game ideas that have no rules set but to game across a variety of time/space/genres without having to learn a new rules set for each niche area.
ECW skirmish, two foraging parties stumble upon each other.
Fantasy skirmish
Modern conflict – although it will be interesting to see if it is possible to setup asymmetric skirmishes
Sci-if skirmish – I’m not into 40k and Infinity melts my brain.
Pirates
17c highwaymen, smugglers and the Revenue.
Hopefully it will mean I can use some of the awesome minis I already have and give me a reason to buy gorgeous minis that are not part of all the other games I already play.
Don’t lose the mornings! This is what we all wake up for in at the weekend!
If you are looking to adjust the show I would love to see a week in the life of you guys. So pics and discussion on what you have all personally been playing building and painting that week.
Also saw a comment on YouTube saying out the name of what it is your talking about at the bottom I would second this as I have to watch it while dealing the the army of toddlers I have so sometimes forget what is going on.
Also DINOSAURS!!
We do a lot of what we’ve been playing/hobbying with during the XLBS show @katana101 so that somewhat fills that slot 🙂
I love my Drowned Earth minis! Really looking forward to a campaign system!
There are plenty of stories you could apply a generic game system to. I can think of various movies I might want to play. From classics like Indiana Jones to more recent stuff like The Hunger Games. Mission Impossible or James Bond would also be a good candidate.
Perhaps even more fun could be to grab some stuff at random from my eclectic collection of miniatures and mash it together in a ‘what if’ scenario. Can a space Marine tactical squad stand up to… a unit of Ghulam supported by a TAG (or two). … a horde of angry Dwarf Slayers. … The Hand from Kingdom Death. … The Joan of Arc dragon (a.k.a. Satan)?
Oh yeah, and I like my Weekender to be ready in the morning. Then I can watch it during the day while hobbying.
Please leave the format as is
Cheers guys, great show ?
As an Aussie, the current format works well for me. I usually watch both shows back to back on Sunday evening as I get my hobby on.
I kind of struggle to see any mass combat style of game set in the Dune universe, except perhaps set during the various Jihads. Political/ Mercantile struggles for sure though.
When it comes to universal rule set, I’d want it to be able to do something silly… like He-Man vs Transformers vs Astroboy… or something
Drowned Earth looks awesome. T-Rex has always been my favorite
My weekend begins with the Weekender and I wouldn’t have it any other way! It’s my excuse to take some time, having a cup (or three) of tea before needing to get on with the weekend housework.
The more I see of Drowned Earth and the support they are giving the game, the more excited I am to get into it. I’ve promised myself that when I’m done painting my current projects, I’m going to look into it and Gangs of Rome as the next two rulesets to paint and then never actually get round to playing 😀
Morning shows please. I’m too liquored up on weekend evenings to trust myself with such a handsome man that Warren is. 😉 Great show!!
Count me and my buddy in for Drowned Earth
To be honest the only real reason I would get and push for my friends to join in an Universal Gaming system like the one mentioned is so I could use any model at any time that I wished. There are just so many cool looking models out there but from so many different ranges/games that it would be hard to learn all the systems and get others to play all of them as well.
Great show guys. Justin if you go to discovery and look at nova programs you will see they have pulled the colour pigments for some dinos from fossils
Sorry its PBS Nova
The Drowned Earth art is stunning. Best Dinosaur ever has got to be Barney. Only an Apex predator would be that purple.
First of all, thanks for bringing this game to my attention, it looks a lot of fun and somehow it went completely under my radar. Second of all, domeheads (I mean, Pachycephalosaurus) all the way, I loved them ever since 2nd Jurassic Park.
I watch the Weekender when my weekend allows. Even though I’m watching yesterday’s show on Sunday evening, it’s still a morning show in my mind.
+1 for keeping it a morning show.
want to see starship troopers on the table top this maybe a rule set for it…
I think being able to play a “Time Bandits” style game would be great for a generic system or a “Kung Fury” game would be sweet.
I watch it when I can – sadly it’s rarely in a single sitting. Currently it’s infront of the ironing or lunchtimes over the following week…
Drowned Earth looks great. I was so close to backing but had to drop out before the end.
Ive been wondering why there aren’t more dinosaurs in minis games. Drowned Earth looks like it might be for me.
So my favourite dinosaur is a chicken – a chicken is a dinosaur, more or less, right? Miniature games need more chickens. Failing that I’d love to play Pteranodons in a scenario trying to get to safety while having them dive down on you…
Steampunk Pirate Zombie skirmish games sounds awesome!
My dino choice is the Apatosaurus, because a brontosaurus would be so out of fashion
Since seeing two seasons of “the 100”, I would love to see fighting future like soldiers against kind of middle ages clan warriors. I love the setting and the show!
Wish I got into the Drowned earth kickstarter. Love me some Dino action .. it just looks so well thought out.
For the Gangfight skirmish game .. It would have to be a Stargate SG-1 setting. Loved the tv series, and the modern miltary feel going up against the alien Goa’uld would be cool .. especially in a campaign setting where you could have a random team member be infected. New worlds all the time using the Stargate. Oh the possibilities 😀
So many options for Dune games but fingers crossed for a 15mm game, also my favourite Dinosaur is a Triceratops as it was always the only one that stood up to a T-Rex
I seldom get the time to watch The Weekender on Saturday mornings anymore. Or even all in one go. Often it is 1/3 Saturday night, 1/3 Sunday night and 1/3 Monday night.
However, I like the positive “Saturday morning” atmosphere which gives it a fresh “time to chill and plan in doing some Hobby” Motivation – even when that almost never Happens – with all the other Family, House and Garden stuff.
Not a Backstager so cannot really comment on XLBS – but given the offen mentioned more relaxed and off-colour humour – that might be more suitable for a Late-Night “BOW in the pub” timeslot.
Still, I admire Warren @warzan for his “let’s mix things up and maybe try something different” attitude – clearly he is back from 2 week’s Holiday and is feeling less precious about just keeping Things the Same.
Also, I get the Impression this idea about a new timeslot and/or Format for The Weekender was News to Sam – he looked lost for words for a few seconds…
The best dino is the triceratops
For me its a show I watch on the ipad whilst on the toilet. First 20 mins at c 7am, 2nd at c 11am, 3rd at c 3pm and then I finish off at c10:30pm. Sorry, is that TMI?
It’s an afternoon, evening, later in the week when I have more time kinda show for me. I almost never get to watch in the morning….much less on the day of release.
I will have to say I am intrigued by The Drowned Earth and that starter set would push me full on into the game.
Interesting discussion – great to be back after being away from the community. Drown World – using Savage World rpg rules..
I sadly missed the original Kickstarter and the late pledge – just had a lot going on at the time. But I love post-apocalypse, jungles, donosaurs and running all over buildings! Would like to get into this – and am especially interested in the campaign KS.
Oh, and I’d definitely like the Weekender to stay as a morning show. I love watching it in bed with coffee!
Gotta love Ceratosaurus! A slightly smaller Allosaurus with some badass horns on its skull? Yes, please.
The best dino is Satanus from Judge Dredd, but I’d settle for any T-Rex 🙂
I usually don’t even watch the show on the Saturday, so I don’t really care what time you release it… He said after watching it on a Tuesday.
My go to generic system is Savage Worlds. Been using it for years for all kinds of settings.
I soooooo want one of those large landsharks and my google-foo is failing me. The smaller one is Reaper but I can’t find the larger, kewler, one. HELP!!!!!
My favorite would have to be the Pteranodon also known as Rodan! He’s one of my fan favorites from teh Godzilla series, who doesn’t love a giant flying dinosaur.
Dune on table top? Thats pretty awesome. I love modiphius!
I would choose Brontosaurus. The bigger, the better. From the range of Drowned Earth, I like the gorillas the most.
I split a Drowned Earth pledge with my brother, went for The Firm faction, basically a gang of mercenaries. Could use another set to add a couple more factions. Favourite dino? Well, obvious I know, but for me you just can’t look past the good old T-Rex. “Jurassic Park!!!”
Oh and btw i am one of those folks who likes to have breakfast in bed on a Saturday morning and watch the Weekender, so my vote is to keep it in the a.m. Plus anyone who wants to watch it in the evening can still do that anyway. You know it makes sense!
Awesome prize – drowned earth looks great, just suffers from needing lots of terrain for a home player, brilliant gameplay though, and if you have a club to support the terrain table then this would be ace.
Concern with Unique will be the balance of the game. I’m invested in keyforge to see how it works. My issue is that to make a game unique (I know it can be one tile, one card different to be unique), means that lots of cards/tiles/game bits have to do roughly the same thing with maybe different art or name, to make sure the gameplay they have created holds up no matter what set of unique elements you get.
The theory is amazing, to have that unique experience of a game without the stigma of legacy where people can be hesitant as generally you end up with a game to put in the bin after legacy is finished.
The unique system will rely on their clever AI system in the back end.
It is intriguing, but i’m not convinced its as great as the theory.
oohhhh shiny. Geeking out about the drowned earth.
Hey what about having a morning show and evening show, double the goodness 😛
Keep as a morning release for me. Love to see the Rorke’s drift anniversary game or games.
I prefer flying dinos, so I’d go with Pterodactylus for Drowned Earth
An ankylosaurus cause they might not have the brains but they sure got enough protection for a comfortable life without getting eaten!
So all the Dune discussion had me start the audio version while out on the road this week. The last mile on the road was rather uncomfortable as all people kept discussing water and how much, 2 large iced teas was probably not a good idea.
Thanks @dracs
My favourite dinosaur is the Moschops, because of its funny name and look 🙂
+1 for keeping it as a morning show! I really feel it suits this format better as it means those who want to watch it as a morning show still can, but those who do not have time until the evening can still watch it whenever it suits them. The XLBS show would be greatly affected as it would leave only Sunday evening to watch it if you have a busy week, I don’t know about others but I for one love sitting down on a SUnday afternoon to just relax and watch the show.
Drowned Earth looks like great game. The minis look fantastic, can’t wait to play this game
When I interviewed James Baldwin he said that he’s not planing writing rules for flight in Drowned earth so no Pterodactyls in the near future. So for now Lissz from The Firm is my favorite half dinosaur. I just painted one as well. It appears I can’t post images here, so here’s a YouTube link. I made 360 degrees rotating showcase video.
