Woohoo! Bring on Big Ben!!!
Happy Sunday, I thought you were having a lie in 😉
Happy Sunday
Happy Sunday!
Well it would be if I didn’t have a long drive ‘up-North’ ahead of me today following Storm Deidre. Whatever happened to cool names for storms and who’s next? Probably storm Ethel or Egbert!
It’s Sunday, time for the XLBS!
Wouldn’t it have been awesome if Sam, (with his actors background), would have worn a ‘bald cap’ for this show. We’d have all needed sunglasses to watch it! ?
By the way, I have that Buck Rodgers game. It’s fantastic!
Sixth!
Happy Sunday…. Well I’m late, but in my defence I have been to 4 Christmas parties over the last 6 days and I am feeling a little “tired and emotional”. Now for the show …
don’t worry son, it wasn’t up until an hour ago, so you would’ve been very very early if up at your normal time
I think that’s why I did a “sixth”. I’m not used to beating you to the comment section.
I hope your “fun” and “sociability” was worth it!
Brilliant Show guys
“Like an Assault Charge”
May be in the top ten OTT lines of all time.
Definitely going to check out Inquisitor 28
When Cad was talking about Full Thrust and Dirtside why wouldn’t you not use Stargrunt 2 instead of 40k or was it a slip of the tongue
I remember that Little Big Horn game I also loved campaign and many others from that period
As for games I wish for. Well I’ve been trying start Napoleonics for 35 years but haven’t quite got round to it yet. Maybe one day
Sam’s face early on is all of us I think, lol.
Am I the only one who’s not all that enamoured with Jon Blanche’s work? I think it’s great in background books like Libre Chaotica, but otherwise I don’t particularly like it.
“Try out blood on bases and it not looking good at all” – that’s why you’re supposed to paint with paint @brennon , not bodily fluids. ?
Ben’s mention that he and his mates went on to expand their PtG warbands into full armies – this is what I think they should have done instead of AoS to address the issue people had with WHFB with the buy in being so high; come out with a skirmish/low level ruleset that only required say two troop boxes and a hero to start (they could even have done these as bundles with the hero as a freebie), and then you slowly expand the warband until it gets to the point where you just need to add a war machine or wizard and you have a small WHFB army.
Got to agree on the losing enthusiasm while waiting for a Kickstarter to deliver point – currently waiting on one for boards/terrain tiles and it’s dragged on so long that I’m at the point where I just want to get it delivered and over and done with and have opted when the creator gave the option to modify my pledge to get it delivered quicker.
“Headline News – Cast Of Doctor Who Play Boardgame with Minor Internet Personality. More Details After the Break!”
That about right @dracs ? ?
What are your novels about Sam? And are any of them any good? 🙂
iOS Mordheim: it really isn’t the same; dunno if they’ve rebalanced it recently, but when I was playing it a while back I found it lethal even by Mordheim standards. With the tabletop game you expect to take injuries and lose the odd guy, but in the app game the fatality rate is way higher. It was also an interesting experience having about six of the first six ranged guys in my warband ending up with Frenzy. It doesn’t help that it takes so much GC to replace and equip fighters. I think the reason for these things is that it’s weighted to try and encourage micro transactions; it’s their way of trying to get you to shell out real cash to avoid death and to buy extra GC and premium currency.
Over the past year haven’t done much gaming until recently when I’ve been getting back into 40k and I have to say it’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing 40k; of all the editions of 40k I’ve played, I have to say 8th is by far my favourite.
Games I missed out on – Necromunda. At my club Mordheim took off during and just after it’s twilight years, but we never really got around to playing Necromunda to the same degree (think a couple did a short campaign once, but that was it). Which is why the new Necromunda has got me excited and I’m hoping it’ll take off come the new year. I do really like all the non-standard guys that have been added as support personnel and once I’ve built/painted my planned starting gang I’m planning on kitbashing some of them so I’ll have them ready to go when hired in a campaign. One idea I’ve got for Hive Scum is to either eBay a couple of the old metal minis or buy some of Heresy Minatures not-Delaque, with the idea being that the Scum represent Delaque fanboys, hence the similarity in dress but why they don’t look exactly the same as the new minis. And at the very least I want to kitbash some Ambots, cause who doesn’t want Ambots? ?
Good mo….. oh no… I can’t watch this… it will kill me…. I GOT WHAT I ASKED FOR! And I’m scared sh*tless to start the video…. well… here goes nothing, was nice knowing all of you XD
Next week’s XLBS will be sundancer’s wake everybody.
?
I’m just past the point of “the salty surprise” and I’m dying XD
We’ll have a whip round for you; I’m sure between all of us we’ll have enough sprue to build you an extravagant mausoleum.
?
Build a pyre from it 😉
What, and release all those toxic fumes into the atmosphere? Tsk tsk.
When I go I’ll take you all with me! XD
Dont panic. Its all very sensible. Though the Hobby hangout wasn’t that funny either
Happy sunday folks!
Sat watching this working on my Warbringer titan (Project update later 🙂 )
Happy Sunday!
Now that was a nostalgic trip 🙂
Some of these games including Full Thrust and Adeptus Titanicus are a a nice memory.
well it is a happy Sunday “ho ho ho”
what I wish id played more…
EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID
The Buck Rodgers RPG that TSR did was great as well
Great show, really enjoyed it. Happy Sunday.
I SURVIVED! 8)
Great show.
And nobody mentioned Gorka Morka from the golden days 😉
happy Sunday everyone.
it is always a lot of fun when Ben & Cad are there.
know the feeling what Ben saide about frostgrave everything in the house and finally ready to start and then the next game arrived.
but have found the solution.
the frostgrave figures are used for what I am looking forward to next year, The Legends Of Fabled Realms
ho ho hoooo and for everyone a happy play and hobby Sunday???☃️
When you are talking about things being moved around the office, just look at Sam’s facial expressions .. He has to be the culprit!! Sneaky Sam is! ;D
Kill bill 4: Balrog
great group for an excellent discussion. Do get the 4Ground guys back again.
Happy Sunday
I consider myself fortunate enough to still be able to play many of the games I enjoy despite their age due to a great group of gaming friends. If there is one I was obsessed with for years but sadly rarely get the chance to play now it is space hulk.
In terms of games I’ve not explored enough there are three. Two are kickstarters, namely Mythic battles pantheon and a song of ice and fire. The third is the Batman miniatures game which no one else at my club has shown an interest in sadly.
@brennon Really sad to hear your comments about Frostgrave. My mates and I have had many games, played through loads of scenarios and had great fun expanding our warbands and telling some fun stories. Consider yourself welcome to an open invitation to get together with us and explore Frostgrave to your hearts content. We are a few hours away but im sure we can sort some logistics. Feel free to pm me and we’ll make a plan if you want.
Having fallen back asleep it was a late finish to this XLBS.
The game I loved the most was epic. Between the sheer scale of battles with those tiny models (6 shadowswords? 6 baneblades? Damn right!) and the fact they were too small to spend forever painting I just got so into this game. GW would be crazy not to add tanks and infantry to modern Adeptit (as we called it back then).
Game I wished I’d played more: Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Let’s ignore the predictable rant about its demise and replacement by AoS, it’s just rank and flank (IMO) is the best way to fight big battles. When I got back into the hobby, WFB was the second thing I did (after WM/H) and despite knocking out over 100 models, I never had enough to play. Perhaps a hint as to its demise, there, but I may finish that army one day 🙂
Ah well we all have games we would have liked to have played more, I’m still having a blast playing the games I do play. Hope you’re all doing the same.
Some of the old games I wish I still played include Cosmic Encounters, Dark Future, Car Wars (one of my all time favs) and Bushido RPG. There have been quite a few I wish I had but never played, which includes Heroquest and Advanced Squad Leader. Yes, I am one of the few 80’s gaming kids who never played Heroquest.
Some of the more recent games I’ve not played but want to include Star Wars Legions, Descent board game and Song of Fire and Ice.
The one game I wish I’d backed when it was on KS is Kingdom of Death. I really kicked myself for not backing it.
Happy Sunday
Mine have to be Avalon Hill’s Gettysburg and of course LOTR War Of the Ring Mass Battle game from GW
Where can I find this space campaign that Cad was talking about?
I presume it was a home made campaign so probably not available. Full thrust and Dirtside can be downloaded for free at http://www.gzg.com
I love path to glory, the version you talk about, it has a new version released a couple of years ago, and even a 40k version, but this new version doesn’t appear to be as personal. I’ve been looking for longest time for the original rules from either slaves to darkness or lost and the damned as those warband creation rules are supposed to be even more chaotic. i’d love to play it again, perhaps with some house rules for having a demon champion as if you read the rules pamphlet they did promise this as a future addition. Mordheim has always been my absolute favourite, spent hours and hours creating lists, cutting up and modelling warband members, reading and staring at the rulebook. My biggest regret right now is that at some point I lost Empire in Flames, the expansion book somehow not sure when, and I’d love to have it back. Town Cryer released a bunch of extra stuff, some legal like dearfs and orcs, some play at own discretion like khemri and lustria. I wish I’d played more, I loved the look and feel, the setting, the campaign nature of the game, and in fact I’m looking at having a few games again of it next year, currently modelling up some warbands and hired swords with as many original and old school models as possible. I too am afraid of a new version being sigmarified, but if they did then I still have the original.
@longlivethesheep – I’m posting this just in case you aren’t aware, but the I think the original ‘Path to Glory’ wasn’t specifically called that. It was in the two original Realm of Chaos books, ‘The Lost and the Damned’ and ‘Slaves to Darkness’. This was pre-‘tournament’ army lists, so when you were picking an army there was a lot of rolling randomly to find out what you had, what equipment you got, etc. So you could build up warbands that way.
You can still find the books on e-bay but GW have also reprinted one of the original books which they sell at Warhammer World. So yes, it is the original, not updated or anything. I think they may bring copies with them to big events like the UK Games Expo too.
If you live in Australia, that may not help you much, but just thought you should know that there is a way of getting the original rules – and yes, they did have D1000 tables…
(I think I should also add that I’m not sure if one book had most of the campaign / development rules in or whether they were basically reprinted in both volumes, so you’d probably want to do some research before just buying one of them at random.)
is the navigator a relative of mad eye moony ?
loved the show great work on the hounds Justin.
I get so little time to model, paint or game these days so I’d have to agree with most of the choices everyone’s already made.
Over the last few years I have made time to played Dropzone Commander and am looking forward to the new edition finally being released in the hope that people will start doing tournaments again that are the inspiration I need to actually do some gaming.
excellent show for us old farts.
I miss playing Traveller, Lots of good times.
Sam, hide the clippers. Ben is might be far enough away from the Que Ball-Zone to be momentarily safe.
No news on Fabled Realms? I’ve been maintaining my enthusiasm for this one, which as the guys mentioned, tends to happen with kickstarter games. I’m super excited to read the fluff, learn the rules and fully immerse myself in the game.
We’ll have more on Fabled Realms in the future from the folks at 4Ground. Rest assured they have it in hand 🙂
What a great chat this week!
I recognise the head on the Inq28 conversion: it’s the head of a Chaos Cultist from the Dark Vengeance starter set from a few years ago. It’s totally different on that body!
I was fortunate enough to be able to get in on Kingdom Death during the first Kickstarter. It could become an entire hobby unto itself for me!
Frostgrave is definitely one that I wish I had got into. I played Necromunda and Mordheim back in the day, and I see the potential for Frostgrave to recreate those times.
But I’d need an interested group and space to play. The first I could rustle up maybe, but the space and scenery is not something I have the luxury of right now.
The game that I wish I got to play more of us Dropzone Commander. Sadly the local community never got very big and disappeared several years ago. I hope the release of the 2nd Edition rules will kickstart it back to life but TT Combat is taking forever to finish them.
As for current games, Gangs of Rome. Just a really fun game, great rules and characterful minis.
Future games? Tough to decide. Probably The Drowned Earth as I’m currently working on building terrain for it.
A game I own but would like to play more of? God, where to start. I guess it would be Infinity but everyone I know just seems to want to do 40k.
A game I really want to play but haven’t is Saga, just don’t have anyone interested in playing a historical Wargame. I’m considering getting the rules if/when they release a fantasy world book. And if this ever happens I think it would be cool if 4ground were to release some Skyrim style buildings – a bit like their current dark age buildings but with a slightly more fantasy look to them
Cad! Ben! Great seeing you guys on the website again. My old favorite was always Warhammer Warbands, it allowed you to customize your units like Mordhiem without having to deal with 50 figures in one unit. We used to combine warbands with DnD rpg games. The characters would link up with mercenary warbands to fight large battles.
My Dwarf barbarian would turn out to be a questing Dwarf prince out to his honor by clearing away grudges, but could call upon or would find a small dwarven army to lead/help.
The first game that really got to me was Avalon Hills – Magic Realm – At some point I will get it to 3D in 28mm or something like that
That game that I wish I could play more…It has to be Dropfleet commander, which I jumped in and got the 4 player Kickstarter. And Dream Pod 9’s Heavy Gear. Again got a lot of minis to play the game, far too much for simple two player demo games… The Beasts of War Crew should do more Dream Pod 9 stuff.
Epic Armageddon! Anything epic really… Missed it by being a teenager with money for one game only.
Happy belated Sunday all! Wonderful show as ever, always love seeing the 4ground guys in the studio. So hard to pick out something from the past. One thing is I picked up the Edge Dawnfall Warchest, and backed the 2nd Kickstarter to get the upgrade, but I’ve still not actually got around to playing it yet! Or painting any of it for that matter.
So what your saying Sam is that you almost became a watcher on the wall ?
