Happy Sunday
Too many models? No such thing, there are only 3 types of models painted, unpainted and the ones you’ll paint some day.
How do I deal with too many models? Well that’s a trick question, you can never too many models lol.
The game is called Age of SIGMAR, nuff said.
News: Ben got a haircut.
3D printing of Justin: swap the whole head for the beard lengths and stubble amounts.
Too many figures: do what Warren does, call John.
£10 for a Justin?. I’ll offer 3p and an opened packet of Panini football stickers
There is no such thing as too many models, simply ‘I must buy more paint as I have run out’
When painting my 6mm stuff I only use an O size brush. More than suitable for the job
@torros I’ve started painting my 6mm MDF figures from Commission Figurines, much of it can be done with a Size 2 brush, I can turn around a small unit of 16 or so in a bit over an hour. I pull out the detail brush only for strapping and cuffs. Lovely to paint!
@georgesealy Sounds great. When can we see some photos?
@torros very rough pics of my first try, still need to do some colours on the facings etc. The painting is very easy, although I could have perhaps been a little more careful 🙂
Oops, can’t post pics in a thread here, I’ll get some decent pics taken and post today or tomorrow with luck.
It is a proven scientific fact that if you paint all your mini’s you will die
Too many Models???? Doesn’t happen …… and in my free time I like to go tiver diving in Egypt …. yes I am happiest when I am “Deep-in-de-Nile” 😀
obviously that was supposed to be river not tiver …. sigh
Nice paint work @Dignity… But why, oh why have you stuck them on unprimed bases?
As for a miniature of Justin, what would I do with it? Firstly I’d get my snippers out to ‘meat out’ (geddit?) some revenge on behalf of a notorious warband of his…
Rathcore Miniature Holders v3 will be going to retail at the end of November.
Me, as a wine drinker I have plenty of corks and I try and drill/pin most of my plastic models so I can pin them to the corks for painting before pinning to separately painted bases at the end. Metal models are a bit more awkward unless they have a slot base which can also be mounted in a cork.
I have a solution for boxes of minis bought with the best of intents but still sat there… Sell them or even give them away. Either if I’ve fallen out of love with a system (sorry GW, it’s not you it’s me! Actually that thing you did… where was I?) or if I got a one of everything KS.
For example I sold or am selling off original KS GuildBall and Dropfleet factions to other club members. Reduces the backlog while encouraging more players into the game!
As for painting, I’m with the “it’s just a boardgame” mindset, although with some of the hybrids I’ll prime, wash/dip and highlight to different shades/hues… e.g. Blood Rage done to look like bone playing pieces of the gods – Rising Sun will be similar.
I suspect MB:P will be a two level job, level one simple schemes for the mass troops and level two (a bit more work) for the heroes etc. The odd model might get more love – but only if it maintains the overall aesthetic and doesn’t clash. The dips help with that!
Gave the miniature mount a go yesterday and must say I liked it, until I wanted to turn the mini upside down to get at a fiddly place, then it just got in the way. Going to give it a few more goes though as it does completely change my hand position in a more comfortable way. Az
One of the things I’ve been doing, based on an article I wish I still had the link to, is keeping my elbows off the table. It takes a bit to get used to (okay more than a bit) but it give you the ability to position your brush and model using your full range of motion. For instance holding your holder upside down and tilted back slightly; you can also adjust the way you hold your brush for those hard to reach spots, say a little underhand. For stability you can then brace your arms against your side like a photographer and even use your brush hand’s pinkie as a brace/bridge against the holder.
As for hand shake it gets better with practice, you can also treat it like you’re timing jumps in a platforming video game 🙂
I’m definitely an elbows on the table painting girl…alternatively the pinkie finger on the base of the model works keeping the hand shake in check.
I sorted ummed and arrred on one of those, particularly with my ability to get finger prints on stuf (could do one for big tank models as when I’m putting on decals my ability to put my finger on the one I put on earlier is legendary, nearly up with the legendary time spent on hands and knees on carpet looking for the essential part of model that popped of sprue and landed inside small hole that you would spend all day trying to deliberately target!)
so will be interested to see how you get on.

I prefer to pant mine unbased so I use 5″ flat head nails. I have some wooden boards with holes for the nails to sit in and I glue the minis to the nails. Gives me something to hold the mini with whilst allowing full access.
Happy Sunday!!
You could do bowstrings with the rigging line made for ship modelers. Its nylon, so you can stretch it taught then attach with a dab of superglue, the stuff for 1/700 scale is about 0.5 mm diameter, so would look much better than guitar string.
This sounds like an epic idea! Thanks for sharing 🙂 As
On my true to scale bent, i did a web search for the diameter of bow string. It varies, but bow string is about 3mm in diameter, which at 1:60 scale ( roughly 28mm or 32 mm ) is 0.05mm. So then i did a web search for 0.05mm thread and found 0.05mm fishing line, such as this one: https://www.troutline.ro/hends-synton-0-05mm . I’d be interested to know if this works well. It’s reported to be quite strong, and i would think it would need to be to hold a trout.
@justin liking how the Cataphracti are coming on but please please drill yr barrels ;-P
Happy Sunday everyone 🙂
Az
I have a list if projects that I am doing and that need paint.
I do not allow myself to have more than 30 projects in the queue and I do not allow myself to play with unpainted miniatures. These things help me keep the lead mountain under control.
I gasped at 30 projects, but I don’t know how many I have. It could be 30 projects 😮
I prefer to think of it all as one big project – or rather one big BAU (Bu&&ered As Usual) ongoing, never ending operation to keep my head above the rising pile of grey!
Whichever way you look at it, it’s a shameful pile of plastic. I guess yours is too 🙂
Some projects are 2 minis and some are complete armies.
At the moment I have one project of two Dragyri Ice Caste that will finish off all of the minis I have for that army. Another project is a complete Strathclyde Saga 6 point army.
I also put estimated timings on the projects and at the moment I have 335 estimated project days until I have finished everything 🙂
Is Justin’s reticence to have his own mini based on having to … snip himself?
+1 for a mini Justin!
Also on painting handles – I’ve never used one but I saw that thread in the painting forum (that STUNNING giant with tattoos) where the guy one of those with the arm to hold it instead of the top of the mini. That one would be worth it for me.
That’s probably the Rathbone handle – retailing end of the month! See above
RathCORE, not Rathbone (Elementary mistake 😉 )
Aha cheers. I’ll might have a look for one or two of those.
yeah there is such a thing as too many models! I was going to forum thread on it… maybe I will after this,
Happy Sunday 😀 .
My ( rather sparse ) hobby time has been revolving around a largish amount of IG i picked up off a couple of friends. They’re very much a WIP, as i need a few more special weapons and bits sites are all tapped out ( at least every time i visit one ). Seeing the progress of @brennon and @dignity along with my purchase of a GW painting handle should give me a much needed push in the hobby direction.
Does @thisisazrael have the mobile game to go alongside LightSeekers the card game ? As apparently the cards contain special effects if scanned. Congratulations again to all the Golden Button winners and again, that Wraithlord is simply stunning 😀 .
I like the Darkoath Queen, i have certainly seen many barbarian women mini’s far worse than that one. The only thought that comes to mind when i see the Blizzard promo is ” i have a lot of unpainted stuff…i’m very glad it’s not that many “.On that note, i don’t think there is such a thing as ” too many “, because we all intend to build, paint and play with them at some point, it’s just not always ” right now “. My current solution is to bag and box my surplus mini’s, keeping them together and stored by game system, rather than just lumping them all together in a huge pile.Nice to see that Bandua’s new stuff, even if it is a little on the pricey side, but nowadays what isn’t in this hobby of ours ? The Atlantis mini’s are beautiful and would bring to life a game of D&D or any other RPG for that matter.
Final KS thoughts, they are both very nice looking projects, the mountain climbing game looks cool as hell and those terrain pieces look great. But my wallet is spoken for at the moment ( a lady called Joan and a man called Leo saw to that 😀 ).
of course you can have too many minis. it’s all about having a less neurotic and more balanced approach. well done Justin for recognizing that and showing some restraint.
as I said in the thread it really depends on what sort of painter you are. your man stated clearly in the thread that he only paints to the best of his ability. one mans detailed paint job is another mans simplified method. you can certainly go the route of just not painting your hybrid
games at all. nothing wrong with that if you are comfortable with it, my brother has gone that way for now. but for me if it looks like a miniature then I class it as such. I think seeing all grey or clashing pre coloured plastic looks awful. i do like the black and white pre shade method with a few spot colours and the stone affect but you could spend just as much time doing something like that. i personally think a board game looks classier with metal or wooden tokens than low quality miniatures.
i have also come to the conclusion that the fast paced hyper ball that is our industry need not be a negative. there is always another got to have new toy. if you missed out on rising sun no worries you could jump on joan of arc. no money or hobby time free this year? no worries there will be something else next year. if nothing takes your fancy then there is always folks selling last years hotness on ebay. it helps filter out the good from the great and you may have a smaller collection but you’d have the real gems.
plus one for Justin the survivor
atlantis miniatures for mythic battles wound be spectacular
I use bottle corks to place the mini on for painting, you can either glue them or use blue tack. I generally get my corks from Wilko. They come 10 to a pack for under £2, and work perfectly.
When. ainting armies I tend to dtick with simple paint schemes. As I was always taught; Keep it simple, STUPID….
My board game minis are considered part of my grey army.
Didn’t you already have 3D prints of Justin’s head?
I ended up not backing Joan of Arc due to the mini count.
…. but most of them were only little! 😉
Agreed but that doesn’t really make much difference to me. I reckon I would still spend around 30 minutes minimum on each cleaning, priming, painting and detailing.
I probably average around 2 hours a week where I can paint so the project would take me around 2 years if I did these exclusively and always managed to find those 2 hours. It’s around 200 hours work.
I think I could do it as a Boot Camp month at BoW, where I got all the minis and then just knuckled down in the corner and painted all week every week. Pretty sure I would come out looking something like Golem.
very sensible of you mate. gutted you only get a couple of hours a week to paint.
I remember someone once saying something to the effect of:
” God put me on this earth to paint only so many miniatures,
and so far I am so far behind
I
Will Never
DIE.”
I have Mythic Battles, Shadows of Brimstone and Star Wars Legion dropping in the next three months or so. Too many minis? You may have a point…
No such thing as too many minis; just ones you haven’t painted yet that you own, and the ones the manufacturer is still looking after for you.
I’d happily paint up miniature members of the BoW team. On re-reading that last sentence I feel that I may have missed an innuendo opportunity. Oh well, I guess I’ll just leave it hanging.
Unlike @dignity you mean 😉 .
I’d totally buy BoW team minies, so +1 from me.
As for too many minies, I try to make it really visual for myself how much stuff I have unpainted and how many projects going on. I use a simple Trello board to track my lead pile and WIP. This also helps with being more effective and getting batches of work done: for example I see what is ready to be primed or varnished and if there is lots, I’ll just do all in one batch.
There is already a Justin mini out there, Prodos printed his head and Warren stuck it to the body of a Genestealer… That needs painting up and put on the shelf just under Bens screen…
Thank you, @chadster – you are totally correct. I saw it myself first hand at the Team Yankee Boot Camp. I wanted to get a T-shit that said “I HAVE SEEN AND TOUCHED JUSTIN’S HEAD …”
But somehow it sounded weird … 😐
Do’h! That’s supposed to say “T-shirt” … 😮
a t-shit sounds messy.
John to the Paint cave, Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na!!!!!
I love how people are demanding GW beat the Blizz diorama. The record was based on video games… so we need a total war: warhammer, or a Dawn of war one.
I wonder how many models Beasts of War has? It could be with the ones in the board games thrown in that your not far off hehe
Listening to the show, and I’ll say I’m a big convert to larger brushes. I typically use a size 5-6 brush for the majority of a 28mm figure, maybe drop to a size 2 for a face. You can have a figure ready with basic shading and glazing done very quickly. Then pull out the detail brush just for the final touches.
There certainly is such a thing as too many models.
I’m not just talking about the time needed to paint them, but also about the space they take on the board. There more models you have, the less meaningful choices for movement you have, as all those models start getting in the way of each other.
Ask yourself, is my game really that much better because I have all those extra models?
For me, the answer is a resounding “no”. I’ve simply gotten to the point where I have neither the time, nor the patience, to paint hundreds of models to get a game. I’d much rather play a well designed skirmish game than a badly designed mass combat game where the individual models means nothing and I’m removing them by the bucketload every turn.
Interesting to hear that a No. 1 brush was recommended for the JoA minis. I’m going to go with that bit of advice.
Although, I’m guessing that it depends on how good the brush is. It’s all about how good the tip is, my W&N is phenomenal and worth every penny; the no.1 gets used for 90% of my painting.
I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ll never get all of my stuff painted – I’ve already got a small mountain untouched, MB:P is going to arrive soon and there’s no way that I’ll get through that in a year before JoA arrives so my paint queue is getting longer, not shorter!
I think we need a Justin Mini that is a comentator for Aristiia, just put a mic in his had like he was at a con interviewing someone.
Happy sunday!
I love collecting and variety so I’m confused by this new concept of too much.
I’d buy a 3D Justin!
I thought I had too many models, than I bought more and now I don’t have enough.
I use a “paint handle”, blue tac on the top or bottom of an empty gw paint bottle works perfectly fine for me, has for years. I have enough of them to paint a ten man squad at a time. Seems to have sped up my painting a tad too…either that or it is just all the years of experience finally catching up to me.
The Death Guards look great, @dignity ! 😀
The Mini Justin (and Ben) Painting Competition? Oh, yes please!! 😀
Yes indeedy!
@jalong thats my theory.
The Infamous Kevin ofter says ‘not going to buy anymore minis till painted what I’ve got’
He’s currently painting Death Guard, and has the Typhoon pledge for Mythic!
I rest my case.
Main reason for stop buying minis at moment is lack of storage space. certainly contained buying much more terrain, as got very limited storage space.
Need a bag of holding!
I’m definitely running into the ‘too many models’ issue as kickstarter rewards are coming in. Or as I like to call it: “I have my hobby sorted for life.”
As much as I’d like to I’ll probably not get everything painted. But I’ll try to batch-complete certain aspects of different games as I’m putting them to use. Starting with (colored) primer and a zenith highlight on everything is definitely a good start.
I just use a pill bottle and double sided tape…
Regarding too many minis, no such thing. I just paint what takes my fancy at the moment, what a wonderful problem to have!
