Flames Of War 4th Edition Boot Camp: Day Three
We're rounding off the Flames Of War 4th Edition Boot Camp with more battles and we'll see how the campaign plays out on the tabletop that's been going on over the last few days. We've had a massive amount of fun getting stuck into the new rules and exploring how it's coming together as a game.

Looks good from the perspective of someone who has never played but is into history. Can anyone suggest a good way to get into playing to see if I like it, but without needing to buy and assemble a huge force first.
Well battlefront are releasing a El Alamein starter set for v4. It includes a mini v4 rules, the cards, 1 grant and 2 crusaders and 1 panzer iii and 1 panzer iv. It’s rrp is £25 and you get some card terrain in the box plus dice and unit cards.
That’s probably you’re easy entry point into v4. From there you can expand with the full army boxes.
This boot camp is awesome.
The campaign against the videos have been great so far!

Would love this set. My son is showing intrest in war gaming and this look to be a decent entry into it. But alas i dont have it nor do we have the money to get into it at this time.

This has really made me want to do two things:
Get my arse up to a boot camp for a solid weekend of hobby fun
Get stuck in to historical gaming
Of course, probably shouldn’t throw myself in to another project, but it seems like a perfect time to jump in.

I think its really neat that they come in coloured plastic now, make them look great when your playing with them before you get around to painting them all.

Can’t make it to Ireland, but at least one of my gaming buddies and I and doing a Rune wars boot camp of our own that weekend if our pre-orders have arrived.

Thanks for the tips. I will certainly consider the vi edition starter box as a way in. Just need to figure out where to put all the stuff if I branch out into yet another war game. Will see what local clubs play flames of war, see if I can crash a game a two as well.

boot camp is truly awesome as it showcases the games, newest editions and other tidbits however, i really dont have any faith in the contests but that is mainly because to date i have never won a contest and im sorry but after 20+ years of entering contests i should have statistically won somethign by now but i digress. here is to hoping i win this time. keep up the great work beasts of war, loving the bootcamp vids

I was admittedly a bit skeptical about 4th, but it looks great and so keep up the good work. I’m loving this boot camp so far.
Mega-battle was great, but I like the final conclusion: This outcome was merely a delay of the inevitable. For a rewrite of history, the Germans would have had to do far better than the 6-1 collapse they had in the first round of battles, i.e. El-Alamein 1

All this stuff looks so good. It’s a shame you didn’t have the mats arrive in time (if only because we didn’t get a weekender and some more Warren meets Mat segments).
The bootcamps always look so much fun.
I am serioussy thinking of buying some Perry Rats and AKs and some portee trucks and jeeps and panzer IIs & IIIs and some vivkers, mathildas, UC’s and covenenters.
Gonna have me a time.
Yeah, I know that’s all 28mm stuff but…I like the idea of some tan and yellow paint.
This was one of the best, if not the best, bootcamp weekends to watch.

My only suggestion would be to get oriskany and John in a room with some flash cards naming campaigns, divisions, weapons and armour from WW2 and let them wax lyrical for as long as they want.

What a great addition it has been having Jim (oriskany) in, the guy seemed nervous as hell in his first few videos but seems to be getting in him groove. Nice work BOW team.
OK…. so i was looking at the starter sets for FOW 4th edition. eems to be a little confusing. Previously they had the Open fire starter set which was fairly fleshed out starter set, now they have a much cheaper starter set with only a few tanks. Is this really worth it? Whats its purpose? How does it fit into the overall Flames of war 4th edition “next buy”.

Concerning the vid on unit sizes its worth noting the confusing differences between the US and British systems. For a ‘one battalion’ regiment such as 3rd Carabiniers or a regiment of an organizational corps such as 107th Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps, the regiment was essentially a US equivalent battalion. Most regiments were not combat units but rather umbrella administrations for several battalions which fought separately, often in different continents, e.g. The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. Then there were regiments with misleading names such as The King’s Royal Rifle Corps which was not a corps like XXX Corps or XII Corps and The Rifle Brigade which was not a combat brigade!

It occurs to me that my comments in the last campaign video are a little misleading. Yes, the Germans won (badly won) the last big mega game, and so largely halted this part of Operation Supercharge in our campaign. However, for those who have been following, the huge British lead built up during the early turns managed to carry them through.
After the boot camp I did the math and presented the final results, but this was in a “green room” thread for backstagers only. For those interested, the full results of the BoW Boot Camp El Alamein campaign are posted in the images linked below:

FINAL RESULTS: British 18.5 – Germans 16.5. Even after the big German win in the final mega-game, the campaign comes down to a naaaarrow British victory.
