Undead by Lovecraft2020

We start with the addition of some excellent undead from Lovecraft2020. They have been growing an undead horde for use as part of their Vampire Counts army in Warhammer: The Old World and recently introduced some well-painted Ghouls to their force.

Undead #1 by Lovecraft2020

I really like the grim and gritty way that Lovecraft2020 has painted their Ghouls, especially when you take into account the various skin tones amongst the regiment. It suits the Grimdark leanings of Warhammer Fantasy Battles of old and reminds me a lot of classic Strigoi artwork from back when I was playing the game.

Undead #2 by Lovecraft2020

I am also quite the fan of the basing that Lovecraft2020 has done for these miniatures. It evokes the idea of foetid marshes where flies choke the air as these Ghouls scamper forward seeking living flesh! There is also a good use of blood amongst the miniatures to hint at their ravenous appetites without overdoing it. It's a really nice set of Ghouls, making use of the new Warhammer Age of Sigmar miniatures and slotting them into The Old World.

I also really liked these proxy Crypt Haunters that Lovecraft2020 has introduced into the army.

Undead #3 by Lovecraft2020

I can understand why this was done as the Crypt Haunters from Games Workshop aren't particularly great miniatures. Going further afield to get some alternative miniatures was a good shout. I like the twisted giant skeleton vibe, especially with the roots/growths bursting through their skeletal forms, giving the impression that they have long been buried beneath the earth.

Make sure to go and check out more from Lovecraft2020 over on their project, as it's packed with great Undead inspiration.

Terrain Basics by onlyonepinman

Next up, we're having a look at the work by onlyonepinman who has been getting into the spirit of TerrainFest with their project.

Terrain Basics #1 by onlyonepinman

This project has been prepped for a few months and is focused on making sure that a tabletop feels lived in using a lot of the basics that you'd expect to find in a wargamer's collection. To that end, the aim is to fill a four-foot by four-foot space with trees and rivers, the kind of terrain that you can play around buildings to make the tabletop feel natural.

Terrain Basics #2 by onlyonepinman

onlyonepinman has been doing that by documenting the materials that they have been using in order to bring these different trees and rivers to life. There are breakdowns on the materials used and where you can get them as well as information on why they are important to the process. A few test pieces have already been made and there are going to be more indepth walkthroughs over the course of the project and TerrainFest.

I was particularly taken by the example river that onlyonepinman made. I think the river effect works super well and it will be good to see the breakdown of how this came about as the project is updated.

Terrain Basics #3 by onlyonepinman

We talked about terrain basics during one of our recent XLBS shows and so this is a fascinating partner to that discussion. Trees and Rivers were two of the four big things we could think of so maybe this will get some of us to pull our fingers out and get on with the process of building terrain!

Epic Warpath Terrain by graven

Last but not least, we're going epic and checking out what graven has been working on as part of their project for TerrainFest, bringing a set of 10mm Sci-Fi terrain to life for use in Epic Warpath.

Epic Warpath Terrain #1 by graven

As you can see, the terrain is already looking great even at the early stage of production. They have used Sci-Fi fleet battle asteroids and space station parts which have then been blended into a rocky outcrop before being 3D printed.

The terrain then gets the personal touch. After mounting onto a masonite board, gravel and sand were added to develop the natural texture of the pieces. This should mean that the buildings and the terrain as a whole should blend well into the board much better than typical set-on terrain.

The buildings then get painted up alongside trees for a sense of scale. I like the ageing done to the different buildings where nature has started to reclaim parts of the structure. It creates an eerie feeling to the terrain, as if it's a secret base that you should maybe stay away from. Perfect for wargaming!
