So, one little boo-boo here is that a model only gets one AP to spend during it’s Sentry Action and both the models in the Cybertronic squad were facing the wrong way.. so their only possible Sentry Actions would have been to move (which we will get back to in a moment) or to Dive for Cover.
Moving is generally considered the best way to protect your squad (or a more valuable squad nearby) as you can move into close combat range with as many as of the Rapid Deployment troops as possible. Of course, if one of those models activates and kills your guy who moved into range, the rest are free to shoot at your squad as normal. Also, the obvious counter to this counter is to ensure you land more than six inches away, or to land on the other side of the squad you want to shoot at so that the sentry models can’t move in a straight line.
An extension of the sentry tactic is to take a custom warlord with the Early Warning System. This allows the Warlord to take a free Sentry action if an enemy model Rapid Deploys nearby, even if the Warlord has acted this turn.. HOWEVER you are still limited to one action of each type during the turn. Thus, if your Warlord moved and made a ranged attack during his own activation, when using that free Sentry action later in the turn, you Warlord would only be able to chose the Close Combat or Dive for Cover Actions. So.. generally you want to activate your Warlord last to try and avoid this.
Probably the most common counter RD tactic however is the use of tokens – be they the Venusian Ranger’s booby traps or Imperial’s Sentry Guns. While they are not a sure thing, the threat of (some) damage to models acting in proximity to the token can offer some area denial.. although there is never enough of it to go around in my opinion!
Just a few question:
– how long ago was this recorded? (Blaster is 24″ for some time now and RB12-19a has much better stats atm)
– can a model fire with Sentry backwards (I don’t believe it can)?
Oh this was the middle of last year I think, before the recent force list updates (including the one increased the range of most machine guns to 24″). But..no, a model can’t fire backwards π
So the Chasseurs shouldn’t have fired.
1.5A came out this week….again nothing for the Imperial π
Heh, you’re kidding right? During the kickstarter, all factions apart from Imperial were funded and they were implemented at a basic level.. lets say 8 units for each faction. Heroes of the Solar System came along, and added maybe another 2 units for each faction. Imperial were developed after that and we got the beta rules for lets say.. 20 units all in one go. Over the months that followed almost all the mini releases were for Imperial. Then the beta rules were officially ‘released’ with some rule changes / balance tweaks etc, and still it was only the Imperial models that were getting released with the occasional Legion model.
So while the faction rule books have been updated recently (except Imperial but you can think of it as.. the Imperial rule book got updated first, then all the other factions were updated later and released in one go), they STILL have more unit options and more models for those units than any other faction. I think if there was a continued Imperial focus, all the other players would have given up with WZR and gone home by now π
So while there are a few Imperial things on the release schedule (e.g. Fenris Bikes) most of the other planned releases are for the other factions.
