    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

Question of the week (courtesy of the almost-as-old-as-me fart @warzan ):

    • Growing old. Are you feeling it? Are you dealing with it? Do you have any plans for when Age happens to you?

And now back to the show.

My pledge (also courtesy of Warren): Tidy up my hobby/work space. As he I do have the tendency to just mess it up. And it’s not helping that the space is limited!

    As for my answer:

Yes I am feeling it. Literally in my bones. Everything hurts all of the time. But most times I can ignore it. Eyes are getting worse and I am almost at that point at getting new glasses. (And boy are those expensive! G’Wullu has nothing on glass manufacturers)

How am I dealing with it? Most times I ignore it until I can’t any more and then I’ll get new glasses, a magnifying glass with light or a new chair. Since I’ve done most of this recently I guess I’m good for the next 2 or 3 years.

Luckily the shakes I sometimes get when trying to paint very fine detail are not getting worse. Especially since I use that magnifying thing and paint less tiny details. I’m never going to be a top class painter of models and that is fine.

As for music: let’s go old school demo!

Pledge of the week… paint some miniatures that have not arrived for a campaign idea involving scuba gear and tomb raiding.

Also paint the terrain that arrives this week (the One Ring is heading to Moria… if they live through tonights game).

I’m 60 in less than a month… so yes… I do feel my age at times. Always worn glasses, but the eyes are getting worse and the ‘floaters’ are really annoying at times. I mostly feel tired, but working a six day week to get one week off every six is hard as it’s physically tiring, but when the week off comes around it’s good… it’s come around… no work next week.

And I think I’m dealing with it.

Getting old sucks . You don’t realize that all the dumb ass things you did to your body in the past will catch with you . Hence the aches and pains of arthritis in various joints . One minute you can balance on a kitchen chair and stretch up to change a lightbulb , the next you hurt bending over to slip on your shoes . But at least being retired you have time to get all those figures painted and kits built , if you feel motivated to do so. I go through phases were I’ll be at my hobby bench from breakfast to bedtime pretty much 3 – 4 weeks straight , then all on a sudden its on the sofa watching a TV show box set or two . I find the trick is to have more than one interest so you don’t get bored . I mostly build 28mm Russians with some Canadians and Germans for variety of color .  I also have a variety of different kits of tanks , planes , boats , fantasy figures in various scales if I need a change of pace . Hell I’ve even got some foot tall resin garden gnomes from the Dollar Store to paint up for my Daughter’s garden .   If I want to avoid the hobby bench , I’ve got a ton of DVD movies and box sets to waste my time on . Plus , I’ve got a stack of CDs that I’ve bought over the last year to listen to , and a ton of reference books to page through .  Just received that massive 800 page KV book from Tankograd that is going to show me all the things I forgot to add to the3 KV kits I built .

I do have family close by , 4 kids with their spouses and kids within 200 miles . We don’t have to see each other every week , in fact one daughter I only see 2 -3 times a year , but everybody’s doing well . I hate clingy families , your grown up , get on with your life .  You can visit me on my birthday and I’ll buy you lunch . LOL

I do have a group of guys in my age range ( 40 – 70 ) who get together for lunch every Saturday to bitch about the world in general and how it was so much better when we were younger . All are involved in the hobby scene in some way ( GW , Trains , RPGs , model kits ) so we have common language . So we talk about new kits , washes , hobby tools etc . And once in a while we’ll carpool to hobby/ train /RPG  show in Edmonton or Calgary hitting various hobby shops on the way . I figure I’ll never finish building all the kits I have ( got 2 plastic & 3 resin on order at the moment )  and I told my kids that getting rid of the almost 200 tanks I’ve got built when I die is their problem .  Not true , actually I’ve made a list of which books to give to which guys and one of my friends will coordinate the whole deal . No reason to have all your books and hobby stuff tossed in the bin once you’re gone because your family has no idea who would want them or their value . Always sad to see some old guys lifelong collection of trains thrown in a box at a yard sale for $20.

my pledge: to maybe get back into my hobby room this week; I’ve had a temporary house guest staying who will hopefully be leaving early, which means I might get my room back!

do I feel “old”?: sometimes? I’m in the unusual position of being retired young, and as I come up in various anniversaries of events that led to that happening, I am taking more stock this year of milestones. Looking back isn’t always good, so I’ve made some new goals for myself to enjoy life more, etc.

Old ? My smart watch told me that I’ve got the body of a 45 year old.

I think it’s the simple fact that I’ve been cycling to work for the past month. Getting up early when it’s dark still sucks, but I am feeling better so I guess my watch isn’t lying.

First sign of getting old is realizing you need glasses to read. OTOH … for some reason companies think that a 3pt font is readable by anyone, but in reality magnifying glasses and good light help everyone with decoding that kind of stuff.

I’ve got the week off and have made it my goal to finally finish that 1:1 scale terrain I was doing. I think I underestimated how little time I had during regular weekends. Anyways … less procrastinating and more doing. I also got a smart doorbell to install, which should be ‘easy’.

If I can all of this done I might even get some actual hobby in, but I suspect I will spend time packing hobby related stuff so I can finally call the movers and get that part done and dusted. But first I gots to paint 2 more walls. I’ve managed to prep one wall today. If my motivation holds I will finish painting it tomorrow.

Music … and what’s better than this ?

I just love that intro guitar pattern …

@limburger the body of a 45 year old is very subjective. If you’re older than that… it’s good… if you’re younger it’s bad.

@pagan8th it’s 9 years younger than I am, so it should be good 😀

I do wonder how they calculate this metric, but otoh I don’t feel bad so it must be somewhat ok. 😀

Quick update on Sunday’s One Ring game… it went very badly! Two of the party and recurring NPC dead. Last party member fled with the hobbit scholar while the monster under Fornost munched on their companions.

The game continues with new characters for two players, but they are not foolish enough to go back and get revenge until they have proved their worth in battle and upped their skills…

So… this weeks pledge has changed to writing a new campaign arc… moving the story to Wilderland for a bit.

Also need to paint some miniatures to replace the ones that were eaten…

@pagan8th who did eat those player minis ?
    Are they that tasty ?
    😀

plan for today is to paint half the living room, because that’s all I got prepped yesterday.

    progress is progress 🙂

I cast my minis out of chocolate… dwarves are a bit hairy though so I’m glad his character didn’t die.

Obviosuly the minis did not get eaten, but you can’t use the same miniature for the next character, that’s like adding a number 2 to the name of your character after it’s been killed and having exactly the same PC.

This week’s pledge is to settle on my Terrainfest layout. Progress so far: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1896810/

    • Growing old. Are you feeling it? Are you dealing with it? Do you have any plans for when Age happens to you? – Nothing to complain about too much – been going bald since I was about 25 and have no memory of my Dad with hair, so always accepted that. Getting bristly hairs growing on my ears was a surprise though. Still, generally have good health so nothing to worry about yet…

Hair, don’t get me started on that XD

    @pagan8th  60? Ye olde fart! ,) #scnr

@a27cromwell  I think you hit the nail on the head. Don’t focus one thing. That could burn you out. Might need to take that advise more to heart myself tbh.

@grantinvanman what made you loose your hobby room in the first place? I seem to remember that you told at one point but I totally forgot.

But isn’t it hilarious to a degree? Most active members seem to be past the 50 year mark yet the crew of OTT is still below that threshold. XD Life is weird!

@sundancer – my spouse’s friend sold her house, and didn’t have a new place to go to (poor planning…). But she left early, after finding a place to rent. Thankfully. She only has a mattress to take out now.

Average age of hobbyists? It’s not getting any younger, is it? The Games Workshop as an entry point doesn’t seem to be having the same effect it did say 20 years ago, when one could count on an influx of aspirants to the hobby world.

It’s honestly a bit of a scary trend, the age getting older; it might also be that the younger gamers are using other methods than forae to converse…  us oldies keep using what we know
