The iron areas were painted leadbelcher, washed nuln oil, then highlighted ironbreaker followed by runefang steel.

The bronze was painted warplock bronze and then highlighted brass scorpion.

The stone was painted stormvermin fur, washed agrax earthshade, then drybrushed longbeard grey.

Periphetes facial hair was painted tausept ochre. The runes on Theseus’ blade were painted mephiston red and his horn was painted rakarth flesh and then washed agrax earthshade.

So I have now painted every model with over two months to go before my deadline.

Still to do is to re-base everything on to clear acrylic bases. I then want to take lots of scenic photos with the models on the playing boards and with scenery in place.

Finally I want to review the storage of everything and see if I can safely store the models in less boxes.

Swapping to clear bases

I’ve replaced most of the bases with clear perspex now. Here’s how I do it for the bigger models.

1) Use clippers to cut off the sockets on the bottom of the bases.

2) Wiggle the model so that it separates from the base.

3) Clip off the old pegs.

4) Peel the backing plastic from both sides of the perspex base.

5) Place the perspex base on top of the old base. This allows me to position the model on the perspex base in the same place that it was on the old base.

6) Use gorilla glue 2-part epoxy to glue the model in place. The gorilla glue starts to set after only five minutes so I can only mix a small amount at a time. That said, I can usually re-base all the models from an expansion with one batch as long as I do all the above prep work first before mixing the epoxy.

That’s the entire project done with six weeks to spare. A few points I noticed:

  • Undercoating all the models at the start in their main colours allowed me to play games straight away, but sometimes when I came to paint a model I found I had not used the best undercoat colour. Over all I still think I was best undercoating early as the vast majority were painted an appropriate colour.
  • The clear bases work really well. You can see in the pictures above that even with the thick 4mm bases the artwork of the play areas are not obscured.
  • I very carefully measured the sizes of the bases but forgot to measure their thickness when ordering the clear bases. I ordered 4mm thick when I should have ordered 3mm. This wasn’t a big problem, but some of the models have to squeeze in to their storage space.
