Tell 4Ground What You Want (What You Really, Really Want)
April 15, 2019 by crew
If you wannabe in with a chance of having wargame terrain designers 4Ground build your dream kit then holler at 4Ground in the comments and tell them why!
Move over Cad, it's time to let the community lead the way. Justin and Gerald have already submitted their wishlist to mama Ben, but if you wanna have some fun with a 10mm Reichstag or have an idea for something completely new and royalty free then comment below.
If you can follow Ben's train of thought please leave a map for the rest of us!

I repeat myself, but: I! Fraggin! Love! This! XD I could listen to you two rambling for hours XD (but please fix the squeaky chair ;))
Agreed, Ben is a delight and needs to be on more often. ?
10mm Reichstag? No a 28mm Reichstag.
Actually I’ve had more time to think about it. I’d like either a modern building complex a la Princes Gate London, get my SAS Spectre boys to storm it.
Or a bunker/cave tunnel complex. Not a fantasy one, but a cave complex like Tora Bora, which could be used for just about any system or period. Or a man made bunker again used for hunting down criminal masterminds, fanatical leaders or Hitler.
Also, what I really would like: a Chinese treasure ship! For 28mm Freebooters Fate! It would be a whole table on it’s own.
Yes I’m still here
I genuinely did nod when they said ‘nod if you’re still here’. ?
How many ideas can we submit? Got a few, so let’s throw them at the wall and see if any stick.
1) Space Egyptian temple complex in 28-32mm. Basic form would follow historical Ancient Egyptian buildings, but with something added to give it a sci-fi flare (not sure what, maybe play up the animal headed statues/paintings and the odd techy bit thrown in). I think this is marketable because it will appeal to Thousand Sons players for 40k, people who want to play homebrew Stargate games and generic sci-fi players looking for something different. Unless I’m mistaken, most desert sci-fi stuff available currently is based on the Tatooine look from Star Wars, so this will stand out as something different, while at the same time being close enough that it could be used alongside such pieces. It also has the opportunity for you that with a few tweaks you could also sell it as a Fantasy Egyptian set and could be useful for you as a starting point to make historical Egyptian stuff if you wanted to expand in that direction.
2) Space Egyptian tombs, again in 28-32mm. I’m thinking maybe a modular kit to build corridors and chambers. Again take the cue from real life Egyptian Tombs and add a sci-fi flare. I say modular as part of the marketability would be that you can add additional rooms/corridors/etc to the range at a later date that people can buy to expand the complex. Again it comes with the opportunity that with a few changes it can become a Fantasy Egyptian tomb or an historical one (or more accurately/usefully an Indiana Jones/The Mummy style tomb for pulp games).
3) Evil Dwarf fort/temple in 28-32mm. Unless I’m mistaken most Dwarf stuff out there is for vanilla Dwarves and the only evil Dwarf stuff I can think of off the top of my head are large resin pieces, so I think there’s room in the market for other Evil Dwarf stuff. Starting point again would be taken from history, this time from Mesopotamia, so basically would be a Bablylonian or Sumerian style fort/temple but not as colourful and demonified. Marketability is that it’d appeal to Chaos Dwarf players for WH/AoS, Abyssal Dwarf players for KoW, Infernal Dwarf Players for 9th Age and so on; it could even work as a generic evil temple for something like Conan the Barbarian style games (or even other pulp games a la Indy). Something that would be cool is if you were able to get the guy behind Admiralty Miniatures on board; he’s recently been doing a lot of artwork exploring ideas of Evil Dwarves all over the 9th Age world and would be a great source of inspiration to draw on. (Link to his DA page to show what I mean – https://www.deviantart.com/karaknornclansman/gallery/ ).
go nuts submit whatever you want until it’s over.
I would like an addition to the Jesserai line, well, that look at least. Something that could act as a 40k knight hanger or repair bay. I think you guys could do something amazing with that.
Omg the squeaky chair..!!
Wonder if I’m still at 3rd place or gone up one. The Roke’s Drift set should be finished by now, no?!
Still can’t believe Justin jumped me..that’s so un-justin-like!!!
Think your place depends on how many suggestions made here they like. ?
we played on the prototype, needed to change the walls on the internal layout to be less accurate but more accommodating to miniatures
I guess I’ll repeat my comment here. There just seems to be no interaction on YT.
What I would really, really want is central European, early 20th century architecture apartment buildings and rural houses, because nobody in the industry does those! I’d want them for 28/32 mm scale, but this should be easy enough for you to scale down. Who would want those? Well, pretty much all the historical gamers can use them to finally play some 1944/45 campaigns in Germany with appropriate buildings. I would use them for my post-apo games set in Germany. You could also use them for 1920’s (i.e. Berlin) Pulp game settings and finally modern or even Cyberpunk settings. Architectural styles to choose from would be Classicism, Jugendstil (aka art nouveau) and art deco. Scaled down to 15 mm you have the whole market of WW2 and Cold War gone Hot players as target demographic. And yes, we can hear the chair squeak :D
the chair squeak is subliminal it moves too fast to be heard 😉
I love the apartment buildings idea though, it would really help with the 15mm reichstag that I’m sure Ben will cave in on any day now.
I would like to have a 28mm Lindisfarne Castle. I think this would be a great piece for games such as Saga, it has great historical ties, could easily be tied into Fabled Realms and would make a great participation game table at events for 4Ground.
Before or after the Vikings sacked it?
Would also work as a stepping stone to making Bebbenburg to play games from the Bernard Cornwall Uhtred books. 😉
My dream kit would be a 28mm futuristic cyberpunk oriental villa with working shoji and fusuma the panels would be partially see-through with thin crafter paper. This would allow for some great photos (creeping cyber ninja). With an internally playable Engawa and a LED lighting kit for the central interior. The roof would be tiled in places with some of that amazing corrugated card you use as a nod a more traditional past. There would also be space for a rock garden and sculptural trees and a perimeter wall running from the Villa around the gardens with space for some advertisements to be placed. There would also be some internal furnishings but in a minimalist style to allow for play and the expansion options would be… In fact, I changed my mind this is my next project but I don’t want it to be bespoke like the rest of my stuff I spend way to long finishing instead of building. If you pick this just send me a tiny fraction of the pallet of corrugated card and I will send you the files as payment :p
now that’s the sort of genius thinking I can get behind 😀
also it would be ideal for my Yu Jing
Shhhhhhh no names and JSA forever.
Bakunin will always be there for you, at very reasonable rates, of course.
I would like you to buiild one of XVII century tall houses from any european city that are build around town sqares. search – Old Houses At Dlugi Targ Square In Gdansk, Danzig or Sukiennice from Crakow. it will fit to many tables from napoleonic to modern times, and also all sort of fantasy too,
Spanish Main pirate buildings
I would like to see some pre WW2 Chinese building that would be suitable for gaming between 1911-1949, as this would cover both the Warlord period and WW2. It would allow gamers to play Bolt Action in this theatre of war, as well be suitable for skirmish style gaming set in the Warlord period which could include Chinese gangsters, brigands, spies, Japanese Yakuza etc.
It’s an often over looked period and setting but has the potential for some interesting gaming. Also once I get back from China in a week’s time I will have a ton of reference pics…
I spoke to Joerg from things from the basement. When you get back you should send him a message he may be able to help you out there
cheers, will do
I’ve got a few ideas…
Some nonsuch university/library buildings for fantasy and fabled realms
Elf related buildings
Dark age churches
I agree with Andy Zecks Roman fort idea, especially if it could be worn down to be used for both romans and dark age.
I’d love some add on pieces or even sets so daldorr could look more osgiliath: domes, bridges, etc. they are good as is, but I think it could be taken to the next level.
Im thinking the Bradbury Building in 32mm. Id go 32mm as it will still suit 28 but I have alot of 32 as well. The Bradbury building is an iconic building good for wild west, steam punk, WW2, modern, and thanks to Bladerunner cyberpunk. It has open spaces, close spaces and ticks so many boxes it’s incredible.
If there was a down side I would it would probably be the size but there is always the possibility of artistic licence tweaking stuff to suit, perhaps making it modular. Then again, sommtimes bigger is better.

Ben and Gerry – Soul mates.
Just relocate from the BoT / OTT Studio to the Irish Pub across the road, order a round or two of Guinness and make this a regular show.
What I really really want? Some really good 40k Ork terrain. The Kromlech MDF Ork buildings are somehow too zany for me. I prefer the “serious” rusted Forge World Ork style, rather than the more “fun” cartoon style that Games Workshop and a few other companies go with.
there is a resin building kickstarter coming up that you may want to watch out for 😉
Excellent – just don’t forget to mention this Kickstarter when it goes lives on The Weekender – or post the link here if it is has been already announced.
I think the editors would argue against this. @lancorz am I right?
Meh, after a few pints the editing may get sloppy enough to slip through the cracks.

Living the Video Editor’s Dream. Am I right?
The White House as it was pre-1814 before the British decided to use it as a BBQ to cook the sausages they stole from the larder. Like Gerry, the commander in charge of the British forces that day was from County Down, but we won’t hold that against either of them.
Why this building? The historical research and the challenge. Having a representation of an historic building before the many extensions and renovations it has got over the years. Just for the sheer joy of building it… but the true reason is the opportunity to do some “Hollywood” gaming, twisting a historical event in an attempt to create drama, tension and perhaps even get a love story in there as well.
Imagine President James Madison, his wife and his most trusted advisers are still in Washington, duty compelling them to remain inside the Presidential Mansion (I believe it became known as the White House later), with only a small force of loyal soldiers to protect them. The English, led by the most Machiavellan character you can imagine, are on the march, committing the most alarming atrocities one can imagine (like wearing hats at the dinner table and liking soccer), and are continually closing in on the proud nation’s capitol to increasingly dramatic music. Outlying farms are burnt to the ground, children beaten to the ground by repulsive English soldiers (with perfect teeth and the worse accents since *insert any movie were American actors try and do Irish accents*) and women shot in the back, fleeing from the insanity of an English army in 1814 wearing uniforms from 1831 with the wrong colour of buttons.
The President, against the advise of his advisers, decides to remain in the capitol, supported by his loyal wife, ready to give their lives in the name of freedom. He addresses his troops on the front lawn. His speech is rousing, and you just know his troops will all fight to the death. The leader of these American troops, handsome and possibly with an Australian accent, kills 10 Englishmen before receiving a very graphic bayonet in the back. He keeps fighting, despite the mortal wound, killing another 10 of the evil invaders before he collapses with exhaustion just as the reinforcements arrive to save the President and the day. Of course the English commander will have just breached the front door of the Presidential Mansion, but everyone will wrongly call it the White House, just as the reinforcements come sprinting out of a nearby forest without so much as a bead of sweat of their foreheads. After an epic fight with the leader of the reinforcements, the English commander from County Down (not Gerry) will die and the President and the USA will be safe. The next scene will show the handsome Australian, having risen from the dead, receiving a medal from the President with his arm in a sling.
But what about the love story I hear you cry? Well, the leader of the reinforcements is in love with one of very attractive young maids who worked in the kitchen, and they are last seen happily living on a farm given to them for saving the White House with 15 children at their feet and the young maid looking as attractive as ever…
Not sure that sounds better than just wanting a building to sit on the edge of a battle field, even though historically there was never any fighting near it. Oh, yes, this all will happen in 10mm while the above story will only ever happen in my head.
lol
not sure how I can upvote this more than once.
Glad I’m not dead.
Also Down is the best county 😉
Wasn’t it the Canadians who used the White House for a bon fire? Or was that a seperate incident?
Canada didn’t exist until the 1860s, so we can’t put the blame on them. The evil commander from Count Down (not Gerry) Major-General Robert Ross, who had fought with the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War, commanded a large British force most of who would have been veterans from that conflict. I’m not sure if any of the regiments he commanded actually were raised in the British colonies that are now actually Canada.
Medieval England please for 6-10mm war of the roses.
As a reneactor in real life I also want to hobby this period.
Be amazing to be able to have Bamburgh castle or Warwick Castle to play seige.
Get some town too and campaign the war, scatter terrain for Bosworth and after seeing the Titanicus stuff I know you guys can do great shrinknwrapped terrain!
Speaking of Titanicus, any 6-10mm terrain would work for that, so it’d have appeal to Titanicus players too. 6-10mm Fantasy player too come to think of it. 😉
Loved this! More please 🙂
My idea pitch: Generic two storey half timber townhouses without overhang to the sides so that they can be placed beside one another to represent crowded city streets in various european historical periods and even get press-ganged into fantasy games. Each building should have the front door off center to allow space for an included detachable lean-to to be placed against the front of the building (if not attached then this item could serve as a stand alone market stall for scatter scenery elements). A detachable wooden sign should be included which could optionally be affixed to the front of the building with PVA (or via some sort of groove mechanism for you clever terrain designing types). And, as you can probably infer by now, inclusion of a sheet of paper (or perhaps utilising extra space on the build instructions sheet?) with some pre printed signs (black and white outlines would be fine as people could then colour as they saw fit). Idea would be that multiple of these buildings could be procured and by affixing different labels to the signs and or adding accessories to the lean-to element as people see fit this one design could work as multiple types of shops (or even main street townhouses for the wealthier citizens).
Why? Many terrain companies make an inn and a blacksmith which is great if you are playing a D&D campaign or similar. But when was the last time someone designed a terrain kit for a cobbler, tailor, apothecary, jeweller, spice merchant, bookshop, mapmaker etc? Something generic but with a slight accent element could let one kit design fill multiple niches.
Admit this wouldn’t do well for all trades (a cooper, wainwright, abbotir or baker wouldn’t work) but you could have them used as the retail front (so butcher, bakery or similar). And people would have the option of printing their own signs (or downloading extra designs from the website?).
Appreciate you may be able to achieve something similar as an add-on for existing kits without reinventing the wheel but just thought I’d float the idea 🙂
Oh and I forgot – A sign for a cheesemonger, mainly because cheesemonger is such a fantastically fun word to say 🙂
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz1JWzyvv8A
There is not enough cheesemongery in the world so this is an important, as well as excellent idea!
Love your ideas, good stuff!!!
Always a great video when 4ground are in the studio. I like the idea of 28mm Caribbean/tropical island terrain. Smugglers den, jetty, a temple, shipwreck terrain with a couple of levels and interior and a cave that works in the same way. Pop the top off and theres a few tunnels inside. Or Megacity-esque cyberpunk apartment complexes so you can have a block war. Room to room clearing or balcony to balcony shootouts
Elf village in 28mm please. Lots of clean lines, elaborate roofs, fret work. Ideal for mdf. Maybe a hall, wizards tower, watch tower and a cottage.
Battle of Mogadishu (1993) Black Hawk down 🙂 28mm/15mm
Can I have the town of Sedan in 3 or 6mm including the Chateau fort from the 1870 period please
Too many Ideas will have to generalise.
African Architecture from the mudbrick and Adobe construction of ancient Mali to the intricate drystone walls of Great Zimbabwe.
Mesoamerican, Mayan and Aztec style structures.
Steampunk but with different cultural trimmings eg. Chinese/Japanse aka Silkpunk. 28mm, good for Wolsung
Early to mid 20th Century, Art-Deco, Neo-Fascist styles how the Nazis planned to re-build Berlin after their believed victory in WWII, eg. the Newest Wolfenstein Games. 28 mm, good for, 40K, K47, DUST, Weird World War in general, War Of the Worlds.
I want to never see Ginger Gerry ever again [drinks hard liquor about something entirely different]
Having given some thought of a laser-cut MDF kit I’d want, I’d love to see a couple of additions to the homeland apocalypse range. A drive-in burger restaurant (think a well-known clown-fronted chain but without the IP quarrels); and a single story bar, in line with Davis Jewelry and similar (ahem let’s call it “Joe’s Tavern”).
Hoping the prose mood-board is giving you ideas.
I have always wanted a modular multi-level 28mm space station with docking arms.
As per my YouTube comment; Powick Bridge 1642/1651. 28mm. (With removal span.) The first (1642) and last (1651) battles of the English Civil Wars were fought over this bridge, and so it is a uniquely iconic piece of terrain. In 1651 it was damaged to prevent the besieging New Model forces from crossing it, and so the bridge model would need to allow for a span to be removed. In 1642 you would have Prince Rupert’s dashing cavaliers clashing with the Earl of Powick Bridge 1642/1651. 28mm. (With removal span.) In 1642 you would have Prince Rupert’s dashing cavaliers clashing with the Earl of Essex’s fully armoured cuirassier, over the bridge. In 1651 you would have Royalist Scots bravely defending the broken bridge against the red-coated hordes of Cromwell’s New Model army. What could be better?Essex’s fully armoured cuirassier, over the bridge. In addition. Most model bridges are very straightforward / dull affairs. Powick bridge has very attractive buttressed pillars, which would also be an interesting design challenge for the 4ground boys. Also it is made of a very appealing , warm coloured. sandstone. Battles involving bridges are always challenging, and the terrain is a real part of the battle, rather than an attractive backdrop. The more I think about it, the more obvious the choice is :-).
28 mm buildings and scatter terrain for an abandoned amusement park. This could be used for the Batman Miniature Game & modern games.
For me the money no barrier choice would be for a Napoleonic Martello Tower. It is good enough to be used for blood and plunder, bolt action operation sea lion, fantasy, or weirdly enough……Napoleonics!
However that said the one bit of terrain that I’d want making that I think would have good sales appeal is the good old Bailey Bridge. As it’s a modular system you can add extra packs and get really creative with your bridging. Airfix used to do one at 1/72nd scale with pontoons that I played with for hours as a kid. Imagine how good it could look with 4Grounds eye for detail. The gaming options are as wide as the gaps that need crossing, bridge crossing (The bridging of the Rapido would be my choice), hold for
retreating forces, demolitions, static terrain. The system was used world wide and on into the Korean War and even used in modern conflicts such as Bosnia. It would make a great centre piece for any gaming table.
See I had a few ideas – I mean first thing that pop in my head yesterday was Notre Dame (Due to the sad news) or may a generic Cathedral as some of them like the Notre Dame have witness close to a century of human history, something with a table foot print of the Mead hall or larger, and a bit more personal one would be the GPO (General Post Office) down in Dublin again it is Easter or almost …
But then we did go out today, and seeing the architectural scourge of our time the concrete apartment block, it did strike me that nobody have ever done a full size full interior apartment block, unhandy as it would be. It would allow all kind of Modern games for @oriskany and Co. including Police breaching an apartment or near future games all the way up to Infinity and the like.
1 floor pr kit and about 4 (or more) times the foot print of South Point View, 2 or 4 apartment on each floor (and maybe a lone Penthouse apartment)
#1 A modular expandable 28mm castle/keep with interiors (throne room etc). One you could add to like the mall and truly make an epic center piece to anchor a village or city together.
#2 Some 28mm ships, a fleet for a harbor town would be another nice addition and help round out the feel of a city since so many were based around ports.
#3 Fabled Realms 28mm shops, lots of’em. Baker, butcher, candlestick maker, unique buildings with their own looks to really dress a town up with variety.
Either way I love all the 4Ground kits and ranges, best terrain company out there, just my two gold pieces!
6mm! WWII and Modern.
I would like (and indeed have often looked in vain on the 4Ground site for) a modular 28mm Castle Construction set. I would love to buy Dwarvenforge castle set but at over £1000 its too much. Warlord do a nice castle but it looks like its running to out of print status. I’ve seen a couple of others that don’t appeal (need painting etc). It could be made to work with the ruins of Daldorr maybe and could include stand alone features like towers, gatehouses etc that could be used with Daldorr or other Mordanburg pieces (eg barracks, stables etc.). Yes something modular that I could combine and make my own thing from (as I have with the wooden fort sets from 4Ground and the kickstarter Broggenbridge pieces).
During the KS you mentioned that the next area that Fabled Realms might explore would be underground. I would like to see either underground cave system with all the gubins like dwarven forge or a shifting labryinth
I would very much like the bank from the Kellys Heroes film to go with our small 28mm Kelyys range .
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/458461307/kellys-a-miniature-range
That would be awesome
Been thinking about this on and off for a while and what games do I play that don’t really have that much nice terrain available. I think an Egyptian setting with scenery that makes up the interiors walls of a crypt or pyramid complex has lots of potential games it could be used for.
Thinking about it. In 28mm – a relatively small footprint ‘European’ church, (with flying buttresses please), and more generic Southern Italian/Southern Spanish Village architecture. This would work well for a whole range of games.
Not strictly an mdf kit, but I’d love too an elven tree house in 28mm but I think you’d have to 3D print the tree components. Be nice as a range of buildings linked by walkways and different levels.
