Love and GW in the same sentence!? Now I’m intrigued…
Happy Sunday! Now this is how to start a working Sunday. A sausage and cheese toasted sandwich, a large brew and BoW.
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday
happy sunday – coffee, bacon and sausage sarnie with HP sauce check now lets get going
Happy Sunday folks!!
Had a thought regarding your comments on Lost Patrol and the possibility of GW releasing boosters: Back in the mists of time my first visit to GW was out of the desire to expand my Space Crusade options and a friend at school had lent me a copy of his White Dwarf with rules for Tactical Dreadnought Armour. One trip into town at the weekend and I came home with the old Metal Terminator boxset (with the Captain & Librarian), plus 2-pack blisters of the other options. And that was me hooked.
I know it’d be trickier now White Dwarf is only available from Games Workshop stores, but putting out expansion rules there is one way to get people to enjoy the likes of Lost Patrol to pick up extras.
@redben, those Star Wars ships of Agis are all currently part of Bioware/EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG, still chugging along throwing out more story content. Still very nice designs though. It’s amazing what you can find by browsing Shapeways…..
And regards your comment about the classic heroes and villains of Star Wars appearing in most products, and FFG creating new heroes & villains for Imperial Assault? Checkout this article on io9 from this week, where they discuss the guidelines for writing Star Wars adventures that West End Games issued in the mid-90’s http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-secrets-of-writing-good-star-wars-according-to-wes-1765739282
A fascinating read, and I have to say I still have a decent stack of the old WEG Star Wars RPG books as they are chock full of original artwork and little vignettes that flesh out the GFFA in interesting directions. (A personal fave is the Rebel Specforce Sourcebook, if only for the huge variety of Stormtroopers it showcases…)
I think you mean @brennon though I’m happy to be confused with the axe master! lol 🙂
I played a demo of IA at GenCon a few months before it was released, and the guy running them mentioned that they weren’t allowed to create any new Jedi characters for it. It’s why all the Jedi are called Force Users instead, even Luke and Vader.
Sorry dude. The hazards of posting when still half asleep 🙂
Thanks dawfydd for putting this right.
😉
I actually wrote it as the 1st sentence on the website the BoW folks are showing:
“The following ships are all fan made designs based on the SWTOR RPG.”
😉 😉
Happy Sunday!
I’ve got another 30 mins until I get my bacon sandwich- and then off to play some Force on Force Vietnam this afternoon…
It’s been a busy year so far on the Kickstarter front for me- I’m actually backing both This is not a Test and Blood Reef- like Lloyd says, Deep Wars has always been a game that appealed to me visually and the KS seemed like a good point to jump in!
Happy Sunday! Great show again. Thanks to Justin for introducing “This is not a test”. This will definitely help to create a “The Division/Fallout”-themed RPG/Tabletop for our gaming-group.
I’ve been getting into the IA skirmish game as I descend into FFG’s OP scheme. I’ve been at tournaments the last two Saturdays. It seems to be coming together as a skirmish game with a broader range and the errata from a few months ago. The downside of it is the set-up time it takes. As it’s an adjunct to the boardgame you need to play it on the tiles, and FFG’s solution to this has been to create maps from the tiles, and have two missions for each map. At any given time three of the maps are tournament legal. You need to assemble the map before each game and disassemble it afterwards, which is a bit time consuming for tournament play. People do get the maps printed onto vinyl which speeds things up considerably, but which is an additional expense. It also means that to have access yourself to all the maps and missions you need every release.
They ought to bring back the old WotC style poster maps for tournament play. It would be a lot more practical and if every player got a copy (subsidised by the entry fee) it would give everyone something physical and useful to take home even if they didn’t do very well on the day.
@brennon bondi is not from bondage, we are not talking feudal when we talk Vikings. Bondi have the same roots as the morden Danish bonde, farmer or a free man, they would sign on for a share of the profits.
And a free man would have his own device on the shield I would think
Thralls (the cheapest ones in Saga) on the other hand would be the bonded men.
Great job on them Justin by the way
What she doesn’t realise is that my keenness to make her breakfast in bed is actually an excuse to put on XLBS in the kitchen while cooking so I can watch without interruptions…
Deep wars KS looks fantastic, rather appropriate as I watched 20,000 leagues under the sea on Friday with junior Tresillian – I love me some James Mason.
I am tempted but went a bit stronger on Twisted than I had originally anticipated.
Aghhh Kickstarter why do you always tempt me with your shiny new games?
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday!
Nice and simple Vikings Justin 🙂 you have managed to paint a whole starter army and I only 5 Bondi lol.88
Games Workshop games are quite interesting. I must say I love Space Hulk and had a go or two at Warhammer Quest which was fun. Should they produce more? Maybe. I must admit I have a few boxed games with miniatures, but I did not have a heart to paint them and I do believe I should have done this. Still, they are playable thou. I really think that these new GW games will get some people into the hobby. You buy the box, you play the game and at one point you want to paint your minis so you visit your local GW shop or any other club and buy paints and you see the minis from the game etc. You get my point.
This KS postapo game reminds me of Neuroshima Tactics… a great system with disastrously casted minis.
Its nice to see Agis get some coverage – his WotC stuff combined with his conversions were a great source of inspiration for me when I was sourcing models for my RPG and his success at adding variation to the IA sculpts also gives me hope that my own set need not look as samey as I first feared.
As for the shapeways ships (which he also did a fantastic job with – particularly when it comes to the preparation of the printed surfaces), most have their own fan-created rules, dials and cards which gives them a very professional look. I cant speak to how well balanced they are but it is nice to know that your favourite Star Wars ship is probably flyable in friendly games of X-Wing.
Thanks siygess!
There are indeed fanmade shipstats for all the SWTOR ships around.
Personally I just use them as stand-ins.
So the Mantis counts as Bobas Slave-1 and so on…
Happy Sunday……………………..
This is not a Test : will nip on to KS and have a look, but as i have a few KS`s from over the last few month`s so i may just see about getting just the “Rule Book” for now.
Deep Wars – Blood Reef : Nice concept for a game, loving the “Great White” figure a nicely done piece. Just wonder how long before other`s start to jump on the band wagon…………..
@lloyd Might be just my experience, but if you’re considering getting any of the Avatars of War Witch Elf equivalents, you might either have to wait 6-8 months longer than they promise and you might find the figures much less awesome than their hero figs.
Your Vikings look great Justin. I prefer hand painted shields as well, they look more realistic to me. Painting a band of individuals can be hard work compared to units in uniforms. You want them to look different but also they should look like they belong together at the same time. To speed things up I limit my pallette to about five basic colours, So if the first figure has a dusky blue jerkin I paint the next one with dusky blue trousers. I then I just mix and match until they are all done and you end up with a band uniquely dressed but look like they come from the same village.
Happy sunday folks!
Happy Sunday Guy’s
for the Warhammer 40 K stuff i have bought their 3 new board games and they are all great by them self and for me i think their DeathWatch overkill can become their new necromunda game only needs a new rule book and a few card and boom new necromunda wow also i would love to see GW making Warhammer quest again so it might introduce me in to age of sigmer but the game by it self can bring them a lot of money witch they like 😉 and for the new Dust stuff i think that i prefer to introduce my self in to Warhammer 40 k or Age of sigmar with a CIE thet will not steel money from me even if their stuff is expensive GW stuff is always top notch and i am sure to receive it 😉
Well done on those vikings @dignity . Gone are the days of miniatures ER. I actually like the rough and ready freehand on the shields. As if the vikings have painted on their own heraldry before battle.
Great show. Just a note about GW board games …. Fantasy Flight is already doing new games based on the Warhammer Universe. Forbidden Stars has received great reviews since it was released last year, and the 40k Living Card Game is another one. FFG also had the disc wars which featured the fantasy side of things.. FFG also produces the RPGs for the Warhammer universe. The nice thing is that there is NEW Wahammer boardgames being made, not just a rehash of old ones, and FFG is already an established company known to boardgamers.
Justin, I’m loving your Vikings, I need to base mi e now ;D
I remember buying space crusade from toys r us, and the expansions. I hope they are going to start distributing like that again, it was a great way of getting their products in front of young ones.
Also, very nice Vikings @dignity, makes me want to start some myself 🙂
Nice work Justin! 🙂
Aww no, not another bloody set of Dust rules! I’ve already got the supposed “new rules” from the damn kickstarter, and the Allies cards pack. Right now I’m thinking of using the minis I got from that KS for Wasteman instead, as I feel less inclined to get into Dust fully after their messing about. I know it shouldn’t put me off playing but, the wait to get my Dust stuff had been so long, that I’d lost interest. New games have since come along, and kickstarters too, like Wasteman, come along and have been fulfilled properly (Wasteman is a one-man-band effort from Thunderchild Miniatures and he’s only got some bases to send out, the mainstay of the minis and rulebook, tokens etc having been shipped out already, soon after the KS ended, which put Dust/Battlefront to shame).
The new-ish Dust minis look really nice, but as I said, my interest has waned. The wacky world of post-apocalyptic 80’s influenced Wasteman has caught my imagination instead.
For an intro board/skirmish game to 40K, it needs to bear some relation to the game play of 40K, in the way that Necromunda did. And since FW will be doing the specialist games, I’m sure Necromunda will be the intro game they need. The three recent board games are an intro into the 40K/30K worlds but not so much how 40K is played.
Just a quicky, Space Hulk First Edition did require an amount of mini construction, certainly on the Terminators.
I believe that was a massive seller.
Justin, I agree, great job on the miniatures.
I disagree with your point on the wheeled vehicles in Dust. Wherever you see wheeled or semi-tracked vehicles being used it’s because of maintenance costs versus battlefield value. That’s why the M3 and SDKFZ 250 were used so extensively in WW2. So if it’s just a discussion about where they would fit in the universe, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
At the scale of this game, you might not see them because it looks like it is tactical in nature (platoon sized). It may also not be a good marketing move to sell boring trucks and jeeps unless they are souped up LRDG style vehicles. Oooo… Kubelwagens with rocket assist!
great show love the Vikings @dignity the new figures are great looking.
The GW board games, imo, are aimed at collectors and are waaay too pricey for any gateway thoughts. The new sculpts are great. Any AoS game would have to be a lot less expensive than the current starter box and the sculpts would have to be a lot better (less static, more dynamic, etc.). Plus, my idea of a skirmish game keeps the numbers per side down to 20 or LESS (i.e., Frostgrave, Malifaux and their like). AoS seems to be creeping to be even with 40K and back to the WHFB level, if not in numbers but in sheer volume, looking at the size of some of those mounted figures.
As to Deep Wars, I saw it at Adepticon 2 years ago, and ordered a couple of starter sets. The rules were decent, taking into account height levels (with nifty, optional stands to mark your level from the bottom, colorful play mats, even submersibles. I found the figures were a mixed kettle of fish (excuse the pun). The larger resin figures were very nice sculpts, whereas the smaller, character figures cast in white metal not so much. They seemed a little 2D and the finer bits (such as the spears, swords or tools) were too spindly and easily bent or broken. Terrain for it could easily be found in your local pet store in the aquarium section. Plus there is the possibility of walking out of the water and into the large underground cavern with its own skirmish system outlined in ShadowWars ( I think it was called). Picture Mysterious Island with an underground sun to light/warm it.
@dignity your vikings look great!
New small games like Lost Patrol, reusing exisiting molds, or re-configuring them as press-fit will work as entry level games for GW. Think original Space Crusade and Hero Quest: Almost no assembly required, had the flavour of the settings as they were then, before the grim-dark really kicked in, and served as an excellent hook to get people in, or worked fine as a board game for those that didn’t want to go any further.
I *knew* there was one more thing I meant to add. There are 17 days left in the Kickstarter, more than enough time for those who have a copy of the rulebook to do a video battle report.
@dignity like the Vikings a lot
when you going to stage your invasion of the south??
Happy monday lol (i’m a bit late thanks to work yesterday)!
I think the next GW boardgame should be AOS but, at a lower price point than Deathwatch Overkill, this one interested me but, not a that price (even if it had a lot of models)…
Hi folks,
now that was a strange experience!
I haven’t got the full “to pay for” membership for BoW, but got intrigued by the mention of IA.
When seeing my minis on the very first pic I decided to pay for a month and watched the video yesterday.
8 Min coverage for my work and website, nice! Thanks folks.
Just explore my site and you will see that I am involved in many, many games, I even wrote and publish my own rule system and worked freelance for Bolt Action and Mongoose, not to mention my play testing for GW.
All the small misinterpretations you made during the vid is already cleaned up above by other guys. Thanks to the very observant dawfydd and siygess!
I think GW has probably missed the boat on board games which is a shame because there sculpts have never been better. The reality is that now that 40K is no longer the biggest miniatures game out there (X-Wing is) and most people, once they move on from GW don’t go back. The Warhammer/AoS fiasco has cost GW a massive chunck of it’ fantasy base and the upcoming changes to the 40K universe will probably scar the crap out of the 40K players (the Beast storyline if you don’t know what I’m talking about, invasion of Terra by Orks in a Death Star, and the Imperial palace by Eldar, destruction of the Mechanicum, massacre of many marine chapters, return of Pertarabo?(but definitely the Iron Warriors saving loyalists) and Vulkan, etc) These board games are great value for existing collector but are expensive for new players, especially when you factor in paints and further hobby expenses. Pre-painted figure are ultimately cheaper and more satisfying for entry level gamers.
Having said that It was great to see Justin’s Saga Warband, and it inspired me to finish off my Uhtred of Bebbenburg led Anglo-Saxons!
Genestealer cultists are making their way into Necromunda. A friend bought Overkill, we sat down to play it, open minded about the experience to see what they’ve done and it’s dreadful.
As such, he sold me his cultists, happy days!
I’m pretty sure there are tracked vehicles in the Dust universe for all factions, infact they use alot of the historical vehicles. The power that fuels the walkers is rare so its not feasible to equip the entire army with them, also there is advantages tracked and wheeled vehicles do have over the walkers in certain situations like wide open terrain.
You say there is no way they’ll bring a warhammer quest back because the universe is gone but we already know they are doing BloodBowl, we have seen the box and mini’s already.
I have heard there is a Age of Sigmar boardgame coming and with the rules for the wargame being free i think its a gear idea. With there being no cost to trying the wargame ith the same minis it could really work to get more people trying AoS. I have heard there is also a Sequel to the Horus Heresy boardgame coming this year.
Very nice vikings!
