Happy Sunday!!
That is absolutely the worst kind of putty I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t even test that out on my children for toxicity yet alone try it out on a test model!
You want some nice osb board as the back – trendy interior designers love its raw look!
Good call! Damp proof too! 🙂
Store those paints upside down and the pigment settles in the nozzles and isn’t easily agitated! Anyway, the clear storage already makes it easier to see the colours at a glance. My wife is going to get suspicious later when I suggest a diversion into our nearest Poundstore!
Putting colours on the top of the label is too obvious; like retailers shoul put the larger sock sizes on the top row rather than near the floor!! (Sorry – an old rant of mine)
As a size 11-12 I’d never even thought of that with the socks *sets fire to M&S*
They do that in the states also. Get down there only to find them sold out. Now that is a gurn of the week.
Don’t think the first link to nail varnish holder will work very well ordered some before and just too small for dropper bottles unless you,, store upside down then they fall out easily and clog the nozzle
Justin
Sorry dude but you done goofed.
Silly putty is basically a silicone putty that leaves no residue behind. It is opaque and a fair bit firmer than what you have there. When you put it on your model you can then use something like a tooth pick to form it around details use the relief of the sculpt to get hard edges.
Go on Amazon probably the easiest way to get it if your toy stores don’t carry it.
Although you have to be really careful with silly putty as well. Much of the stuff you can buy easily is strongly coloured and that colouring comes off on anything it touches (fingers, painted areas, etc). Ideally you want the old fashioned plain one, but I’ve struggled to find that easily.
Never had a problem with color coming off just buy silly putty classic
There are plenty of sites that will show you how to make your own, usually a pva glue mixed with something that slows it setting. Just leave out the food colouring… and glitter!
Why not flour and vegetable oil mixed , that is what play dough is and that works.fine
Silly putty is not the same as play dough. Play dough is more likely to break into pieces and leave bits on the model, especially if pushed into deep details.
Hoo not good silicone is the painters kryptonite when it comes to car paints and will probably be the same for painting models @warzan
Home Raiders ordered – woohoo!
not pound land prices but this is what I picked up on ebay:
http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/Clear-Acrylic-6-tier-Tattoo-Ink-Nail-Polish-Display-Stand-Rack-Organizer-Holder-/182312026269?var=&hash=item2a72a4c09d:m:mVDYE62OMca_8HyksmIplBA
This model takes GW paint pots and I have even used the bottom row as an improvised tablet stand to do some painting while listening to weekenders or Mel the terrain tutor shows
There are plenty of other models too, just do a search for “nail polish display”
I have a similar one. Fits every single pot of paint I have, including GW, P3 and coat d’arms. I think I grabbed it off Amazon for about £7
Always a great show when Justin and Lloyd sit together..lol.
I use the wall mounted angle strips to store my paints but will certainly be getting some of the Poundland storage units to house paints that I’m using regularly.
Sorry to hear Re-Roll is on hold for a while. For as much as the Boot Camps look awesome and are a great opertunity for a few, sadly they’re out of my budget until my 6 numbers come up.
I don’t think many Back Stagers would be opposed to seeing adverts in Re-Roll so long as they were related to our hobby. If you were to include articles from use guys, then the magazine could almost write and fund itself. Why not poll the masses and see what they want from it.
Great show, good to see you all back and over the plague.
Just in case this gets a bit muddled later, I’d like to be clear that boot camps have no effect on reroll 🙂
Reroll’s primary bottle neck is @lloyd and his design time – that is skill/time that just doesn’t exist among the rest of us and we are at a stage where we need new and more shows (so animations and assets etc) and the whole move to the updated web platform, which will allow us to actually develop and launch new features and functionality (current platform can only really be maintained not expanded)
So if we want to grow the core of what we have here (content and functionality) then we are going to have to unleash this man lol
But in the long run it opens the doors for us 🙂
Hobby weekender sounds great. Just wondering for people that fly over how they get the primers and varnish aerosols that you mention they will be getting as freebies back home
I guess posting home would have to be an option..
Trouble is Royal Mail don’t allow each aerosol to be over 350ml in size and you can only send 2 per package. AP aerosols are 400ml and couriers are expensive
These days airlines only let you take 3 bottles of liquid in your hand luggage and budget airlines are going to charge you another £20 to put stuff in the hold
If your lucky and you organise beforehand you may find more than one person in your flight and could just book one piece of hold luggage and split the cost.
I am in error about the liquids as long as they fit in a 20×20 sealable bad and the total amount doesn’t exceed a litre then your fine? At least thats what the guidance seems to be saying
Happy Sunday!
I have no issue with Re-Roll rolling out to everyone. If there needs to be something for the Backstagers could some of it be made XLBS, or could you run a giveaway in the mag in which you enter by posting on a thread in The Green Room?
Giving it to backstagers x days earlier could also work.
Just give it to them share the love dude. better to feed them then ” let them eat cake” and your next public appearance is a live snuff show followed next by a head performance that will be ” here all year- thank you very much uh huhhhh.
Sounds like one of your jobs is to organise your books. Alphabetical by author or invent the gaming Dewey Decimal System?
The gaming Dewey system – genius.
Yeah Gents just some feedback. I am a “listener while I paint” but I do exactly what Justin said , if something sounds interesting or whatever I will look up for a bit, the visuals are still important but if you got the content right. You could get the occasional pod cast in
Plasticine demon falling apart? Sounds like maybe Justin saw “The Gate” instead of Evil Dead.
Poor Ben, shaking his head in the background, having to endure such school boy humour from Warren and Lloyd! Tut! Tut! Don’t worry Ben, take solace from the fact that you’ll always ‘Rise above them’ (sorry! Couldn’t resist just one more in-your-end-O).
Noooooooo
Happy Sunday!
Sorry Justin that is definitely not Silly Putty thats some kind of slime and no Play-Doh is also different. This is Silly Putty
On the Re-Roll you could try and charge non-backstagers for new issues but have a kind of preview copy that has one our two articles that is available for regular BOW members as a teaser. Tho that might take a little extra work so might not work so I don’t know.
I think Baking Soda can work as a Super glue accelerator.
Have a good week guys!
I’m definitely interested in the hobby Bootcamp, will Romain be on hand to give out some sagely advice?
@warzan we’ve been running Irregular Magazine since 2009, it’s been funded from our own pockets and we’ve toyed with the idea of adverts or a price of about £1. Though once you start charging hard cash, people will want original content in every issue. Getting enough content has always been an issue, especially getting people to produce content for free on time.
I think Re-roll should continue because there’s a lack of magazines out there for the table top gamer, especially those who don’t play historical. Growing up in the 80’s as a gamer there were a ton of fanzines as well as high street magazines on table top gaming. The Internet has meant that a lot of folk now run blogs which is great but it’s just not the same as a dedicated magazine/fanzine. It would be sad to see another magazine disappear.
I’m happy to see part of the backstage costs put towards Re-Roll even if that means a price increase to £4 a month.
If you fancy a chat about it, drop me a bell: [email protected]
I’ve dropped you an email 🙂 would be great to get a chat!
Thinking about Re-Roll, personally I don’t see an issue with sponsorship through appropriate, informative advertising – it’s not like you’ll be looking at car insurance.
The Weekenders already include Hubs and features on hobby products companies intend to sell so why not use this to fund Re-Roll. Use the income from advertising to employ someone to run Re-Roll and open it up to the whole community. Include community contributions and look to expand it. You’ve created something which has generated a lot of positive criticism which is no small thing in this industry. Use it as your flagship.
Beasts of War has so much commercial potential. I’ve previously suggested merchandise, look at how Games Workshop profit from the sale of non-gaming lines. McDonald’s make most of their money from their ‘Happy Meals’ because of the toys which they probably get for nothing do to the franchise.
I’m sure there is enough business expertise within our community to help develop your company releasing you to do what you do best.
We have had a policy from the start of only industry related advertising (we don’t do the whole insurance or toung cleaner thing) 🙂
When I worked for a loss adjuster company we used to get quite a few claims for stolen wargames figures
Can’t wait for the hobby weekend 🙂
Just a little bit worried about my flight allowance with primers etc 😐
Your flight allowance would be most likely zero as they are restricted to 100ml in size .Some airlines just ban them completely
Maybe they can be posted home ahead of your flight?
Happy Sunday guys, I really enjoyed the episode today and it was great to see Lloyd in the mix. I even had to pause and go for a second brew which rarely occurs.
@lloyd I really like where you are going with an organised paint area. Have you thought about picking up a cheap solid wooden headboard on eBay that could be attached to your painting table. It will have a good finish on it and be well supported to add the GW items you wanted to do. Also now you know the size works well you should really check out the tiered nail polish holders in acrylic, these are also very cheap on eBay.
I think the hobby weekend is a great idea with huge potential. Tomorrow I will be finding out if I have a chance of being free that weekend so I can try and pick up a ticket. Having a dedicated mix of hobby and gaming is what a visit to you guys is all about for me. As torros has mentioned though I wonder if those people flying will be able to take home any sprays.
I have really enjoyed having access to the re-roll magazine which more often than not allows me to access content that slipped past me on the news feed. I understand that it has been a test run and I think a successful one. I also understand the hesitancy in putting in advertisement but if it needs funding then so be it. Another option may be to have a 3 tier subscription system allowing someone to get just Backstage, just Re-Roll or both. This would allow everyone access to whatever they wish to have as content and could be priced appropriately.
I know a few people now who download and listen to podcasts when travelling to and from work, some by car others by train. I watch the weekenders so see as well as hear all the content and feel something is lost when I can’t see Ben shaking his head at the innuendo in the background hehe. That being said and thinking specifically about the content you did for the Adeptus Mechanicus week, I think that would translate very well as a lot of the content was discussion about the background and army options. More recently the Relic Knights week has some great content that would edit well to podcast requiring few visuals.
Have a great week everyone.
I’d love to do a hobby weekend, but the past few times I’ve tried to get to bootcamps reality has given me the purple bone…
Justin, Justin….Evil Dead films are classics of the genre, they use editing styles such as jump cuts….it was edited in a way to make Evil Dead more scary and create anticipation, atmosphere and hopefully make the viewer jump with fright. You also have to remember the period in which they were produced.
The reimagining/ reboot of evil dead is great, and having a female ash, it is so much more wrenching and harrowing to see the girl beat to shit as she was and to cut her hand off also- ash had it easy to her. Ash was done for fun, the girl it comes across as pure misogyny
@Ben don’t highlight with bright red, use a mix of red and bright orange
Will give that a go @warhammergrimace 🙂
I think if you are juggling too many balls then Re-Roll is the thing to drop. I enjoyed it but it was very much a bonus. Unless there is a way for it to pay for itself I’m cool with not having it. For me the backstage value is in the two weekenders. Anything else you give me is a nice bonus!
I like the podcast idea – especially the ability to download so it can be listened to offline. However, if the Weekender videos could be downloaded the same end would be achieved.
What I would be interested in is a separate podcast which whistles through all the week’s gaming news with the aim of beimy fairly comprehensive. I love the way the weekenders pick out certain highlights to discuss in more detail, but I would love it even more if it was a one-stop-gaming-news shop. As an example, no weekenders have mentioned the huge piece of gaming news that Kingdom Death raised $12m. Of course you’d have to live under a brick not to know that but it does highlight the need to have multiple news sources. If BoW did a comprehensive weekly news coverage i’d switch off some of my other channels. I think a short podcast could be a perfect medium for that with the Weekender picking highlights for discussion and all the nice pictures.
Just some thoughts, I do love BoW as it is though!
For re roll maybe going quarterly is something to consider.
With regards to Super glue activator (which I only discovered was a thing, on here last year) I remember I saw the word “alcohol” somewhere, when I was trying to find out where to get it…. after 15 minutes of detective work I came up with this (bottom of page)
http://shop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=4#Magic%20Superglue%20Activator%20-%20Alcohol%20(pump)
So basically Army painter is saying that alcohol is the major constituent in theirs but what type….stuffed if I know. Since you are on good terms with them … you could always ask
It’s usually called accelerator ( well to me it has) you should be able to buy it for a few quid
Most superglues react with water a mist of water from a spritz bottle works well for a desperate times solution or just buy a bottle lol
either pure ethol or methol. Ethol is purer, less water good to use on metal and electronics ( cleaning the internal of a pc ) use on cuts to clean them, can be drunk, usually clear. Ethol usually mauve, highly flammable( , dirty, high water content, poisonous.
Technically all spirits you drink- vodka, etc are ethol alcahols.
@lloyd @warzan those acrylic storage boxes are great, but if you go to eBay then they have the exact solution and no need to build anything else. What’s great about these is the trays are not segmented so it’ll take GW pots as well. Each unit holds 60 pots for under £10 with free shipping they have to be the best deal out there for a complete solution.
http://ebay.eu/2kg1HvP
@dignity I’ll bring down some silly putty this afternoon to show you. I did provide the link, shame on you for not paying attention. tsk tsk
No John’s tool on Saturday, but purple bones on Sunday. Never let it be said you don’t look after backstagers!
Oh man I’d be very interested in a hobby bootcamp..!!!
Due to Salute coming up in April as well funds are be very limited tho..bugger bugger bugger 🙁
Happy Sunday so definitely up for the hobbycamp…
Reroll and Saturday show my favourite parts of Beasts
Happy to increase monthly cost to keep Reroll
Why not buy a few more of the nail polish holders, file out the corners and glue on magnets and either add magnets or small squares of metal to the bottom of your top paint racks. Then they will stack, and you will end up with some enclosed storage in the lower racks for parts or other supplies. The magnets will keep the paint racks from sliding off, and the upper racks for a “lid” for the ones beneath.
@warzan superglue activator/accelerator/kicker is usually N,N-Dimethyl-p-Toluidine suspended in a solvent. That’s not really something you can buy at your local supermarket etc (unless its labeled as superglue accelerator) so we go to how it works. Superglue is basically a plastic dissolved in an acid, neutralising that acid is how the accelerators set the glue faster. so really all you need is a mild alkali solution that wont burn your skin etc and is easy(and cheap) to obtain. Like Baking Soda. Dissolve as much baking soda as possible in a pot of water, run it through a coffee filter to get the stuff that wouldn’t dissolve out, stick your baking soda flavoured water in an atomizer and that should work.
As a bonus you can also use the baking soda to fill gaps in models, fill the gap with baking soda, drip superglue on it and it sets into a grainy white lump that you can cut and sand pretty easily.
As for your Irish yeti and ghillie suits, I thought you were a former airsofter? Surely you remember what sorts of weirdos and bampots there are out there with easy access to surplus gear…
@justin
it is the wrong thing, DON’T PUT IT ON A MODEL!!!!
what you need is called ‘panzer putty’
i found it on amazon uk too.
but i have an unopend here i will you send it, in the next days. 🙂
cu
caleum
Hobby weekend? I would be very interested
That isn’t silly putty…
Those particular nail polish organisers aren’t for me, but knowing they exist does open a few doors for other solutions. Those massive wall mounted ones are more the thing for my “never mix paint” approach to accumulating dropper bottles.
More great food for thought!
No chance I’ll make it for the boot camp (stupid Atlantic ocean in the way), but with any luck we’ll have our copies of Runewars locally and I’ll be able to work on painting my set right along with you.
Silly Putty is silicone based and is traditionally pink in color though I think other colors are available. It’s made by Crayola.
Play Doh is flour, salt and mineral oil and will leave a residue.
buy silly putty justin.. goes out and buys silly slime, classic justin goof. also justin if you’d read Angels book you’d know the exact bar ranges to set your compressor to, its literary on the first page or so of the first volume also all the other tips Angel stuck in the books just for newbs like you lol get them read! 😛 #voteslapjustin

Speedball>rollerball
Thanks for the heads up on the Rune War’s weekend. I want to fly in for a “weekend” from the USA, but that becomes more like a week given flights, etc. By the time I could coordinate with my boss for the time off to attend F0W you sold out; Martin sad. I’m checking with the boss and hoping you will have the day before and day after option for the accommodation. Love the show, great to be part of Backstage.
That blue book decribing a napoleonic skirmish must be Ospreys Chosen Men.
The hobby week end with RuneWars sounds great. Shame though, you don’t have a State-side version. Get Dawn and Gianna to run one: they’re close enough to me that I’d even offer to help.
Silly Putty in the States is a silicone (I think, been a while) putty that came in a plastic egg which could be used to pull the image from a newspaper. So, it might have issues with fresher paints.
Play-Doh, on the other hand, comes in a variety of colors and could be made in your own kitchen (my daughter had to make some for an elementary school art project). It is edible, considering the ingredients, but I wouldn’t recommend that.
Pulling out my bottle of superglue accelerator, it says it contains Synthetic Hydrocarbons and Aromatic Amine.
@blaeyn the thought has crossed our minds and we would love to do one here in the U.S. We have scouted locations and such. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into putting on a boot camp and the guys in the home office (BoW HQ in Ireland) have set such a high standard.
If @warzan and the team decide to charge for re-roll, I suggest the price for an issue be equal to a month of backstage. This way someone who buys an issue can explore backstage for a month… and hopefully get hooked! If not, they decide on an issue by issue basis what they want to buy/get involved in.
@warzan you know for Re-Roll putting adds, is not so bad i am going to talk for my self but with adds i have discover new store and new games etc ,, so a lot of new things and if it can bring staff to keep it rolling then why not ?
lol not silly putty
Not sure what you guys have in the UK, but this is the silly putty I can purchase in the US
https://www.amazon.com/Original-Silly-Putty-Red-piece/dp/B000BR4K0I/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1485099381&sr=8-22&keywords=silly+putty
You should look in toy stores
Regarding masking, I use different items depending on what you are doing
– Masking Tape — automotive detail type
– Masking Film — This works great when painting camo on tanks or aircraft
– Liquid Mask — Complex compound shaped masks. There is a trick to using liquid mask and that is put it on thick. I always use a brush and put on several layers
– Silly Putting — Odd shapes like masking hands or helmets or imprinted logos
No one technique works in all situations
Also, a shout out to others in the USA. The same exact Geekbox containers can be found at Walmart in the Office Supply section for $0.79 each. There are versions with latches versus lids that are $0.84
Great show guys!
@warzan Regarding a podcast thats something I would love personally, I listen to a couple of 40K ones walking home from work daily and its nice to get me in the mood for doing some hobby when I finally get home. I suppose It wouldnt have to be weekly, maybe monthly or something, discussing hobby plans, games played, bow news and events, and things like Justin’s head melter stories could become part of it. I know what you mean with visuals, but there are a good few out there that are successful.
Saying all that I would hate to loose an episode of the weekender to accommodate a podcast, so me being greedy would love it as well as 🙂 But i know the time restraints!
Justin an artist friend of mine uses green undercoat for the the bones in his portrait pictures.
I have to agree with Lloyd on a UFO being confused by radar. Space is full of powerful naturally occurring radio wave sources so aliens must be aware of them and have built ships that don’t get confused by them.
I can imagine that in the 1940’s when radar was one of our most advanced technologies it was easy to think it could disrupt something, but that’s a bit like a cave man thinking a UFO has crashed because it got confused by his big bonfire.
Perhaps a UFO might have been shot down as the aliens were surprised by a hostile reaction from humanity, but the chances of them making the journey here only to crash must be very small.
I just wrote along answer and when I tried to post it the internet lost the plot.[sigh]
I basically said don’t miss your opportunity, there is momentum from the industry behind BOW right now. but the momentum won’t last if you don’t grow to facilitate it.
release the bottle neck in content from all these companies chomping at the bit. drop reroll , charge more, do what ever you got to do to grow inline with demand.
Quote of the day:
@lloyd “I’m stumped”
@warzan “Don’t be a dick, Lloyd!”
Comedy gold 🙂
Sounds fun, wife not so sure to let me loose in another country taking pics of army’s real or otherwise following our recent experiences in Gambia
The Hobby Weekend really sounds like a blast. I would so take part in this if the timing was different and I could manage the finances of travel from North America. While I think the “normal” boot camps are great (never been to one) the hobby weekend sounds much more like something I’d enjoy as I’m more interested in the models (building and painting).
There are loads of Youtube videos with folks using silly putty for masking. It looks like it works best for larger models. I have tried it on a Battletech miniature for a camo pattern, but found that trying to make a scale accurate splotchy pattern AND wrap it around limbs and torsos was not worth the time. It’s much easier to just hand paint a pattern over a base color.
One tip: use a modelling tool to mold silly putty into shape around the model for better detail.
I love Re-Roll. I hope you find a means to continue it in some fashion. I wouldn’t mind if it became a front stage thing. If links are included toward BoW content I think backstage stuff should be pointed out as well. Obviously if you do put it front stage you need to at the very least advertise backstage.
Quite honestly the amount backstage costs is really not very much (a Starbucks late) for a month. The content that you produce is excellent. Having said all that Re-Roll is quite awesome.
This is silly-putty http://shop.crayola.com/shop-by-brand/silly-putty
The stuff Justine had is not silly-putty.
@dignity you could paint the bones green.
For all of the doubters, let me bestow upon you some….SCIENCE!!!
Green staining on bones can occur naturally in the right conditions.
pic –
paper/blog post – https://bonesdontlie.wordpress.com/2011/10/06/colored-bones-varied-meanings/
“Bones can be a number of colors including black, red, yellow, white or green. Sometimes the coloration can be due to natural processes within the soil, and sometimes they are an indicator of cultural activities. Color can be painted or stained directly onto the bone or can be placed on the skin and become imprinted on the skeleton following putrefaction. It can also be accidental but still due to the nature of the funerary rituals” …
“Finding green stains is actual quite common in a number of historical and social contexts. Green stains occur when bones come into contact with copper or bronze that has begun to degrade.”
For an example of ‘glow in the dark’ bones check out the TV show “Bones” S. 2 Ep. 20 “The Glowing Bones in the Old Stone House” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0988236/
A phosphorescent bacteria (p. phosphoreum) found in some seafood can survive being eaten and set up colonies in the bones of the host making them glow. If the undead were raised from a fishing culture they could share this trait.
Imagine the legions of the dead walking out the darkness shining an eerie green glow…
Silly putty is a product no produced by crayola the crayon company. It isn’t playdoo which is a organic clay.
Make sure if you are getting silly putty it is the brand name stuff.
When it comes to reroll and other productions, I found BoW from watching On the Table when it was on Geek and Sundry. There needs to be a promotional program or item that will lead people to the site. Not everyone is going to want to backstage and that is understandable but this is the hopper principle. The more that go in the hopper the more of each type and level will be created.
I love reroll and hope that it finds a home here at BoW.
With a podcast audio only idea, I love it. I like books and podcasts in the car and while painting etc.
Cool me too.
As I have a total boner for felicia day from buffy, watched the Guild, this lead to geek and Sundry which leads to the Beasts. If this was HollyWood The beasts would be the best men and maids of honour at my wedding to Mz Day. With Adele singing total eclipse of the heart, and Die Antwoord singing November Rain; but With my luck it would probably be tailor swift and justin bieber 🙂
lol
Hobby Weekend sounds interesting. I’m not quite sure if I’d like to hop into Rune Wars though.
We’ll see what happens and when the tickets go on sale.
So the fastest that we have sent a mission to mars is something like 8 monhts.
Setting aside the EM drive and its possibility of being real. You are absolutely right that you do gain by accelerating continuously. But … however long you accelerate for you have to de-accelerate for. The other problem is that you are not doubling your acceleration. If your acceleration is 1 m/s/s than your velocity after your first second is 1 m/s, after 2 seconds it is 2 m/s, after 3 seconds it is 3 m/s, after 4 seconds it is 4 m/s, etc. There is another problem and that is as you accelerate to a faster and faster velocity it will cost more energy to continue to accelerate.
EM
is that the micro nuclear explosion one ? or the electric ark field one?
And to spray paint masking, I have had success with white school glue. I brush it on to areas I want to mask and allow it to dry, even semi-dry work. With a small flat tip tool its easy to flick off the model after the spray coat drys. No residue that I have ever experienced. Just throwing this out there.
@warzan I’m one of those people that @dignity mentioned while you were talking about the possibility of a podcast that paints while listening and then looks up when I’m wanting to see the visuals. However, I’d love a separate podcast. Also Reroll must live! I’m really enjoying the digital magazine once a month, while I do want more video content I want Reroll to live. I like the idea of selling issues/subscriptions of Reroll that is provided free to backstagers.
I definitely want re-roll to continue. It was one of the deciding factors in becoming a back stager. I wouldn’t mind it becoming available to all though and if having gaming related ads helped it continue then so be it.
I’d love there to be a podcast as well. If you allowed advertising on that, it could generate more income as well. Would be great if there could be some BS exclusive content on it, just as a way of making up for losing the exclusive re roll and could generate some more backstagers.
You could use Kickstarter to get the funds for the staff required for Reroll.
Have to be Patreon to raise regular income, Kick starter is by product, I do not think funding staff is even legal on KS
when did it become..”Carry on…Beasts of War” ?……lol
Carry ON ???? I must have missed the huge boobs and exploding bra ;-p
That day XLBS became Ancient Aliens. God I love the Melt Justin’s Mind segment
great show guys cant wait for the BOW witch film to come out @dignity ?
Ends with John in his Gillie suit and with his sniper.
Ends with John in his Gillie, holding his Sniper, Waving his fist in the air and growling I would have Got away with it if was not for you pesky war gamers grrrrrr.
Dead Dave to do the score.
Best film EVAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it includes scooby 😉 Snax, I would be in; we all know what Scooby Snax are made of 😉 😉 😉 ummmmm munchies- a- riffic scoob
@dignity Here’s a link to the wikipedia article on Silly Putty.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silly_Putty
And here’s a (American) link to Silly Putty on Amazon, it should switch locations to Amazon UK when it realizes where you are.
https://www.amazon.com/Crayola-Original-Silly-Putty/dp/B00Q2HH030
I’d camp out in the forest in Ireland with all the fellow BoW Backstagers! I’ll bring marshmallows, wieners, sticks, a machete and some face paint.
I have 2 kukri, 2 mace torches and a phd in John Wisemans The SAS survival guide . The good old one showing you trapping, and how to make spike pits, sprung spiked bars, swing traps, net traps, dead falls and everything out of a viet congs wet dream oh and also how to deliver babies and do a C section . That book was AWESOME. to add to that. I have seen survival tube tents for £3.50 on amazon. I might be for that. Depending on irish laws i can also bring a hunting air rifle and an 185lb pull killer literally magnum pistol Crossbow
Justin . Nice catch on the soldier DUDE you can see the rifle in his right hand – being carried barrel sub 45′ downward, and his grip is on the breech ( top of gun about where an m16’S top handle is or a L85’s susat scope is. That pose is of a soldier in a serious mode moving rapidly to a new position, that slightly hunched stride
Warren it is probably an Inniskilling; true might not be a Soldier from a main land british regiment. But you still have the Royal Irish Regiment running around being soldiers in the woods up there. as Part of your home defence forces. or heck could be even a Sciathán Fiannóglaigh : a RoI-ster Ranger ( sorry I have relatives from Cork, they find it funny when I use that term to differentiate the northern and republic of Irelands’ so it stuck ) an elite ranger from the Republic of Ireland up to no good, on some nefarious task for the EU in and out of all those black helicopters that the EU uses to drop off the bodies of mutilated cattle , and some probing victims ( watch Richard D Hall/ Rich’s Planet)- It is all true, ‘I know this as the tin foil hat is stopping them from controlling my brain waves still’ ;-p. Seriously though Might make an interesting topic for you to melt Justin’s mind with on cattle mutilation and the links to the EU ( or NWO’s possibly) black Helicopters.
Hobby weekend sounds like a great idea. Something I’d try and get to if possible, been making extra effort to step up the hobby of late.
If you can’t find silly putty (or panzer putty same stuff higher price tag I think) then blue tac does absolutely work.. And is in poundland too quite often. Those paint racks from poundland are great.. I’m moving away from the GW pots but do have tamiya for airbrushing as that’s hands down the easiest paint to learn to spray through an airbrush IMO.
On the subject of airbrushing yes it does take time but once you get the basics down it starts speeding up and the effects you can create are worth it. Preshading and colour modulation is great for armour. Zenith highlights for the infantry.. Having an airbrush that you can backflush means you can do quick rinses between colour changes. Get yourself a set of cleaning brushes (not too expensive a few quid) and it makes cleaning so much quicker. Finally some needle juice to apply as you put the brush back together helps to keep the mechanism nicely oiled ready for next time.
As for drying times I’m with Justin last step of the night then the projects ready to go next evening. Also I tend to have at least 3/4 units and projects in various stages so as you stop for one with drying times you can carry on with the next if you wish. The extra time is worth it for me but I also get that sometimes you just want to crack out the product and game on.
Speaking of projects there only so much any one person can do at any given time and priorities come first, so concentrate on what you guy’s feel is needed to continue the success of BoW.
You could think about 3 tiers of membership in the long run. Free, full backstage and then one in middle that would give you access to things like re roll, extra forums, possibly the downloads that we get as backstagers for the projects and rules betas but not the videos?? Just an idea and I’ve no clue how much hassle that would be from an IT side..
Lastly if you have a spare hr there’s a great documentary on you tube about the Horten 229. A group of scientists are given permission to make a full scale replica and then test it’s radar cross section at a testing facility in the states.. Great stuff.. Oh and aliens may not be dumb enough to crash there ships but we’re dumb enough to shoot em down..

On Re:Roll.
Sure I do not mind if you open it up to all the community.
It is too good too keep it as a Back Stage only thing, more should experience it.
We are a community after all
On: Funding things: .I have stated constantly that I feel the annual amount I pay for Back Stage is not enough and I would like to contribute more . An optional regular monthly payment , billed monthly , with options to make 1 of larger payments. kinda like patreon. so i could say set up an extra £5 a month payment, auto billed to I stop it. With no extra benefits wanted except maybe special icons to use as our profile image, or small badges that we collect on our profile header ( like GameSpot used to.) also you could give these out as a community thing, such as site member for (@1,2,3,5,7.5,10 years and so on or created forum post, or made so many comments. Also on the one of payments . Like with the centurion Challenge. I could go to the page, enter in any sum i choose say i can do £50 and I can list this for what ever in a box ; say general/ or I could put in fund 4k cameras, or say fund New Re:roll team.or great bloody show have a few drinkies on me guys, mines a Stolli. Again nothing expected for this except: the money would be used for what contributed for if a real thing (4k cameras), but a pub crawl one is a joke- a general gift to say thanks and to be used for what ever you need to use it most on. Also be cool to get icons to use as profile pix such as one that states say : 4K all the way or some such jokey thing. and also again small badges that line up on the top bar of our profile page.
Again icons and badges are optional , would be nice like with the scouts and brownies. But not that important. Also on donations page list the projects and items you would like to fund in importance , each in its own little box and have a running total of donations, and have it turns green in relation to raised % of total sum needed. and when funded it moves to a 2nd colum and gets a gold border Do not Pressure us to give monthly sums, and donations., Make us aware by say every month or so thank the people who use the donations hub, and when say 4k cameras were funded again thank the back stagers like you always do and thank the ones who donated through the donations hub. that way people would be like “what donations hub they never mention it”, they will go find it and what it is about. Think wow great guys have a tenner. Also say some one who will not generally pay a monthly or annual fee, as just will not. might make a 1 of contribution to a
certain goal you have say 4k cameras.
certain goal you have say 4k cameras.
Or a person may not have enough to pay for a back stage pass but maybe feels bad by just getting free content and could donate anything from say a £1 up to A fiver a few times a year, or chip in to a goal.
Also on a donations page you could have an open goal for providing free Back stage passes to certain people that just runs; as a person may not be able to pay in the full amount of a 2nd back stage pass but might be able to pay in a tenner or twenty; to help out other less fortunate community members..
If you used the profile badges idea you could give a “you passed one”; when a person donates the last bit that makes sum raised go above another back stage pass fee . You would soon be able to pass out a lot more free passes. You could have a draw to award these passes to front stagers for reaching certain goals ( do not announce these ) just run a metric of your users. and of course as you do now to help out some users to get or retain their pass.
Both of you guys are xbox gamers so I am sure you for awhile was addicted to that little ping and the green bar stating achievement unlocked. Well if you gave profile header badgers, instant addiction. Ping you have started your 1st, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th forum topic or same for posting on a forum, comments on bow, fb, and what ever, friended us on face book, instagram, twitter or what ever social media, attended a boot camp, amount of videos watched, articles read, comments made, community interactions. instant addiction and increased community participation. and so on.
On badges you could give out happy holiday ones, seasonal ones, during your live blogs , and special events also what ever it is limitless, also if a person wins a prize give them a badge; it could say ” you lucky git”
On a donations hub. you could use it a bit like kickstarter.; say: help use put out a justins & Dragons collection trade paperback. get the E.book / pdf free for donation, and if buy the paper version get free postage say. and if donate the cost of the book fully, get free pdf and free postage and an A4 sized signed picture of all the BOW team each person signing under their image.
@lloyd @warzan
Re:Roll
again 😉
As all of us Beasties are a community I do not mind my Back Stage fee funding free stuff to Front Stagers.
I Joined on a front stage free account- before that included 1 week of free Back Stage ; mmmmummmble gggrummmmbleeeee hmmmmmmmm; ;-p enough of that I sound like harrison ford these days- the great mumbler 😉
The content you provided , the entertainment, the enjoyment was like doing a whole bindle or even an 8ball at once. I like most tend to free load when can. But I just felt so guilty that you provided me with this amount of content, and this level of enjoyment. I felt guilty twice over once to you guys, as the content providers you gave too much for nothing from me; And to the Back Stagers who were paying for this amazinous ( i know) for me , it was not fair to them. Thanks guys your support letting me use all that content saved my mind and got me over a very bad and black time in my life. and a bigger thanks to both of you groups you brought me back to my first love and the Glorious First specifically ; and back into TT , none european board games, war and collector and hobby games in general, and introducing me to all the new games. So I had to pay for a pass. The guilt was so bad.
Any hoots back to free stuff for none payers. If we want BoW to continue to grow and flourish into the media giant it deserves to be, it needs to grab ever more free users by offering so much and amazing content to keep them in and to suck in more people, this way the community grows , gets bigger, more vocal , more main stream notice which sucks in more people, which brings in more converts to paying, which allows more content to be made to offer free to bring in more new users. It is the community growth that the site buoys
on and will make it grow and survive. So I will never mind funding content for free users.
Another thing about you and free content is you never close off half an article or series behind a money wall – watch 50% pay for the rest – this totally pisses me off about TTG -despite loving everything Dave does especially his banter batt raps and especially against Quirk, well anything with Dave and Quirk together is hilarious, and I love Matts Beat Matt and his reviews. DAVE and Matt reviewing the new Tau Codex and the new mega battle suits I could not breathe for laughing Dave is comically anti Tau.- I hate how everything is 50% split. it destroys some of the love I feel for that site, and would not donate to them ( yes I pay I love Dave. but it tarnishes my feelings for the site and causes bad will. On Beasts if it is for free users it is 100% for free user. As I stated I had no reason to pay at BoW . At the time I was not buying or painting figures or building and modding so most of the paid content had no interest for me ; I solely paid out of good will to not bum off my soon to be back stager peeps, and as of the content you Beasts made and provided I had to support you, and say thanks. In fact The only show you split with a pay wall is the week ender but not really as week ender is 100% of a weekly show- it is a complete show that covers everything a weekly gaming show should, no extra needed, nothing feels left out. XLBS is very much a complementary show if you can not watch it you miss great guys in an amazing show, and you end the week in a fuller and more fulfilled way but you do not lose anything of what is the best last/ this week in gaming show. in fact when I first became a Back Stager I tried to watch XLBS I did not get it or really enjoy it much as it is a character driven show, and I didf not know you guys enough, over a few months, I got to know you guys, and loved Y’all . The show clicked and now i prefer it to the Week Ender. Again I watched all the 3 colours up not for the painting though it has given me skills , but as the free stuff with Roman- I just fell in love with his character, his quirky Frenchness, and the way he has an off beat view and comments, heck even his sentence structure and the way he puts his views across. the guy is major funny I watched them for the host not the content.
On John wow An amazing choice to bring him on , amazingly assured in his skills whilst being totally insecure about them. Roman and him could form a comedy duo with a bit of work,. 2 nerd core guys sitting about painting figures whilst riffing, justin could be their Karl Pinkerton, showing up for pratt falls. John alone has made the back stage pass 50% to cheap. Shit do not listen to me the back stage pass is running at 1000% too cheap for me . shit i could not afford that—- shit urm its too expensive- phrewwwww there quick save; great cover phrewwwww. Seriously though I would willing pay double for the Pass. Good will guys is great . Keep generating it as you do and it is Forza BoWs
Tell you what Lloyd, when you’re not baiting poor old Justin you don’t half come up with some good tips fella. I called into my local pound shop Sunday afternoon with no real expectations only to find them well stocked with both the tiered and round storage units. The round ones are great as they have holes in the middle to hold brushes. 🙂
Very excited for Guild Ball week. I recieved my copy of Kick Off! 50 minutes ago after returning from work. The quality of that plastic they have used in the minis is something else . Very impressed with the product as a whole. I, a Butchers player, have decided I am getting Farmers guild when they come out just so I can have another army in that plastic (it would be really nice if it was orange but hell I’ll take gray)
@warzan
As you get fitter power walking, to maiden. ( great choice btw. ) and it becomes easier, switch up to Dragon Force the power metal will kick your heart rate up by about 50% more than maiden.
Until he gets to a guitar solo and then they have to charge Herman Li with attempted murder…
Lol but Meh that its all rock and roll, murder and power chords, the drummer will lose ahuge amount of the bands money and sleep with everyone’s girl friend. T he singer will either get a bigger god complex and either join a cult or worse start singing christian rock . or be a true rock god and will do so many drugs and so much vodka his heart will explode in a hotel bath tub in Paris. Less bieber more biting bats heads off please 😉
In regards to Re-roll (and this may have already been said, so apologises for any repeats), but if Re-roll goes to Frontstage, why not charge £1 or £2, 1$ or 2$? So it is cheap enough to generate interest, but its funds that can go straight back into Re-roll. Also, if you charge Frontstagers for the mag, say on the mag that all funds go back to the product. That way, the one or two people who will be negative and claim the funds will go straight to @warzan or @dignity ‘s back pocket will (hopefully) be silenced. Also, if it can fund itself even partially, then its less funds that need to be pulled from the rest of the budget. Just a thought…
Well really I’m fine if it goes straight into their pockets… this is their job. Let the poor beggers eat
Whilst Lloyd , john, romaine run off with all the cash giggling like loons and framing Ben. Beasts of War the east ender years -doo dahh doo doo dooo . YOU SLAGS
Melting Justin’s mind.
I often see things while out walking my dogs that look human or familiar then when I move closer or change angles it all becomes clear that it is something my mind has made up out of the surroundings. It is all to do with our animal minds being tuned to spot danger and react quickly in a similar way to horsed shying at branches on a track imagining them to be snakes.
I imagine that picture is the coincidental coming together of moss, branches and shadows and our brain sees a vaguely human shape. If the woman had noticed this at the time and moved around it the illusion would have been spoiled.
I know that you will say “but what about the dog going mental?. Mine often do in the woods when a squirrel scampers across the ground in front of them and up a tree.
Open your mind to the weird dude . what you saw is what you believed it to be, first – you had a chance to say hi to the weird and have the weird . notice you back.. But you unconvinved self and took it back to : the dull: the plane we live in. Embrace the weirdness and take a walk on the quantum side . perceive reality, through the weird, and let the weird perceive you.
I think my preference would be to fund the magazine by opening it up to general members for a cost. Eventually you can sell subscriptions but initially it could be open for the price of a cup of coffee or something like that.
Rip off we pay about the price of a fancy cup coffee for a whole month of back stage . Talk about fleecing the flock a quid An issue sounds fair and say 4 quiddish your suggested price for an issue , but for a 6 or 12 month subscription. If you want to fleece peeps £4 an issue .Ones who might love to support BoW as a back stager, but can not afford it . You should be forced to pay another £48 a year for back stage ; with no choice and no opt.
We are never getting our back stager fee back . Deal with it.
Why Rape others for money. BoW would lose good will and fan love , new contributors would dry up and you would stop your back stage pass as not enough new content, and the site would shrivel and die.
Pay it forward let BoW use your fee to spread the love and more free content , to front stagers, let them grow the good will and love the users will feel and they will pay more money in and the site will flourish and grow. That is our only reward and pay back for our support we will ever get is knowing that yes we are making sure this site thrives. Heck I have said for years the Fee for Back stage is way to loww and even though still low I would accept an extra £1 a month or say a nice round £5 total a month to support Re:Roll going out to front stagers for free .I am willing to invest a bit moire money now , to make sure my future returns grow . these returns being the growth and flourishing of this web site to the media giant it deserves to be.
Happy monday! I know i know, better late than never 😉
Happy Sunday!
I love listening to you guys while I paint 😉
@warzan the discussion on starship drives was interting but any kind of continual acceleration system has a couple of problems the major ones would be the need for the acceleration be low enough to not kill any passengers due to g-forces, you would also have to deccelerate in the same way so you would spend as much time in this stage as accelerating. The biggest one would be the relativistic effects the would happen such as time dilation/length contraction which would mess with your travel.
The best option currently is the Alcubierre drive, in which the ship doesnt have to travel fast but due to the drive warping space-time you would effectvely be able to travel faster than light without breaking relativity.
True and there has been some promising results with it on a quantum level. But the power needed to to compress the space in front of you and expand the space behind you at trillions of miles a sec/min/hr/day is huge well more than the sun will put out over its whole life for a relatively short trip. Also I think gravity wells would seriously mess with that system. Needing to be far away from your own system, with no large space bodies about nothing can be in your front arc or you would suck self into it likje a fly to a blue zapper, Also would be a devastating weapon if a space body is in front compress or rear expansion zone. Probably be a great death -terror weapon for destroying stars. Also have to travel in real space for a long final leg to destination . micro warps would cost too much NRG, whilst long warps would feed in masses of NRG
Also when left warp your relative speed to real space is zero. So need to build your speed up to make that very long final run in not to mention the long run out to start point and Deceleration to you start warp.
Podcasts, yes please!
guys, thats Gak. do not use that
High quality gak is alright 😉
On Runewars weekend. Please count me in! Any idea when you will put the tickets up for sale? Earlier the better as i have to get plane tickets given I live in the USA. Always wanted to visit Ireland and so taking the week off from work.
Yes please PodCast Please. The only thing Beasts does not have. I love me my pods
The Hobby Boot Camp is a genius idea! As someone who paints at a glacial rate, any teachings by someone like army painter will increase the pace of production. Add to this a whole weekend of actually painting, as apposed to the average, wife-described” whole weekend of painting – which involves having to try and watch my two year old for a few hours, popping to the mother-in-laws to fix or move something, going out to see friends in the afternoon for a couple of hours (usually 7-8 and rolls into late evening), being distracted by something shiny, like a new Kickstarter or three, trying to watch the weekender / XLBS – and the actual time spent painting is measured in minutes!
A podcast would be awesome! Especially if it could be done with game-specific themes like 40K Charted. I really like Guerrilla Miniature Games approach to a daily-themed content such as Throwback Thursdays, and Infinity Fridays. Granted Ash still does videos, but the concept can carry through if these things are mostly audio-based. I’m thinking tactics discussion, observation on current releases, general banter, etc.
As for the difficulty of including visuals – would it be possible to include a link at different time segments (like the ability to comment on SoundCloud at specific time intervals)? I’m thinking these links could take someone back to BoW so they could see a visual just as the podcast is talking about it?
Happy Sunday….yep count me in on the hobby weekend…..
Have you guys thought about selling merchandise through sites like Red Bubble or Big Cartel? I’ve been waiting for my Beasts of War coffee mug and t-shirts. Just saying.
I’ve messaged BoW and Warren directly about t-shirts – still waiting for a response. 🙁
Masking minis.
Silly putty is American and comes in an egg shaped box. Get it on amazon and is great for masking minis, can use sculpting tools and such to cover area and comes off easily.
For larger models and vehicles Panzer Putty is awesome, get it from Ammo and comes in a round tin. Again use sculpting tools to fix to area.
Both products leave no residue.
Putting GW paints into dropper bottles. Done this to all mine and lost is minimal, if you add a medium to paint. I got hold of a small funnel, place into dropper bottle, pour a little of GW in as well thick, but need to get space for medium. I then use a Matt medium to water the remaining paint down and place bottle with lid removed into funnel and let gravity do its magic.
Hi guys. I just have to tell you that I have listened to the Weekender several times while driving. I cover the screen with a cloth so that a) I don’t have to shut it off since Youtube detects that on my phone and pauses and b) I don’t get arrested for driving around with a video on. It’s not the same, but perfectly servicable, and quite useful for me.
There are three Poundland shops in Cardiff. Two have sold out of the rectangular nail polish holders. The third only had two left, it too has now sold out. Like most men I never use a basket and as a result whilst queueing I managed to drop both, they bounced and when I picked them up there was not a scratch or a crack on them. The quality for such a low price is amazing! MDF paint holders get very dusty and difficult to clean these plastic ones can easily be washed.
@warzan As someone who has many of the same constraints as you do when it comes to painting (time, money, energy, kids climbing all over you) I would seriously recommend getting a basic paint station, e.g:
http://ttcombat.com/collections/paint-stations/products/paint-station-mix-palette-gw-citadel-tamiya-size
..and take on a low model count project (no more than 6 models.. perhaps smaller. A small gang for the newly released Rogue Stars, a small warband for Frostgrave.. heck, even a lance of four mechs for Battletech). The citadel type will hold all paints (there will just be some ‘wasted’ space for army painter / vallejo bottles) and a project with so few models should mean that a selection of 10 paints is more than sufficient. When you have time to paint – 30 minutes between getting the kids to bed and sitting down with the other half – set yourself a simple goal for each session. Paint all the flesh on the models, base the models, apply a wash to them or do all the edge highlighting / drybrushing on the armour on all the models. Nothing major, but visual progress each week that can add up to half a dozen completed models by the end of the month. You won’t paint a Napoleonic army that way but at least it should help you feel like you are still in the game, as it were.
If you really want to arrange the rest of your paints and have the horizontal space for it, this will hold 60 paints at more or less the same cost as Lloyds poundland offering:
http://ttcombat.com/collections/paint-racks/products/citadel-mega-paint-rack-60
I know I’m late to the feed but am interested in the painting weekend. Will need to negotiate with the wife regarding trips abroad again, with the last trip only being in November.
The amount of content on the site at the moment is really impressive. I think the Re-roll will come into its own on months like this where I think I have missed loads of articles.
It’s been nice to keep in contact with bootcamp friends like Andy Zack and Gerry on Facebook. I’ve seen their gaming and painting progress this year so far and realised I haven’t got anything to show off in kind. I sadly haven’t had a lot of time for hobby, but will try to remedy that shortly.
Happy gaming.
Re roll I vote free to everyone with links top backstage so you will need to buy access. Welcome Lloyd !
playdough have pigment inside and stick to some paints on models so I would not use that ( because I did and it failed experiment) white tack and food foil works great.
i love the idea of a hobby weekend and it is certainly something I would be interested in attending. unfortunately the game in question is not for me. But maybe if it was something from the Black Powder era… Or it could even be a board game.
Interested in the hobby weekend and have got the wife into wargaming so she wants to come to to get professional advice on painting.PM me with details to stop a war at home.
Have always wanted to go on a bootcamp but have not been able to swing it at work.but this one falls spot on.
So pick ME pick ME.
Just a thought, check this https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/comments/38tju8/paint_bottle_dimensions/
The gentleman has measured the paint bottles for most of the paint ranges, if you want to make your own paint storage this will help.
@warzan sorry for the late comment but I’m only just catching up after real life got in the way far a while. With Re Roll could you make it a smaller page count (48pp or similar) with may be 1 feature article that is about a game or kickstarter or product that is funded in some way by the company featured? You could then get community members to write articles to make up some more content ( things like event reviews or a tale of 4 armies etc) and then with some regular articles from the BOW team like the tactics one it should not have are up so much time
