Happy Sunday CoGs and OTTers! Sooo much shiny stuff every month these days. My friends and I now do things is advance. At the start of this year we decided on 4 games to play. We picked Warcry, Blood and Plunder, Warmaster and ASOIAF. So in January we each started painting 1 Warcry warband and 4 bits of scenery. We started Warcy in April and started painting 2500pts for Warmaster, 4 bits of scenery with 1 player making a campaign map. We played our last game of B&P 2 weeks ago whilst we painted or ASOIAF armies. We are all playing ASOIAF now and painting Warhammer Old World armies.
So much more organised and so less prone to ‘shiny’ regrets.
my RPG group does the same thing, it means you know how long you have to run something and people don’t get bored stuck with the one system and GMs get a chance to actually play. @brennon should give it a go that way.
Ugh… in the throes of Shiny syndrome at the moment with an army build idea. It’s a bad place to be when trying to right the boat in the midst of a brainstorm. “Make and do with what I have” needs to override the “Think about what I could get”.
Any ideas why when I’ve tried to download the podcast for the last couple of weeks it says “Forbidden”? Sounds epic, but is there something I need to alter on my device.

@lloyd Germany was where flats began to become popular after WW2 and they the best and biggest ranges. Not sure if there’s many made now though. The original ones had next to none in way of embossing etc on them so all the highlights and shadows had to be done freestyle on the miniatures
based on the flats I’ve seen they had plenty of embossing on them and they’re close to 300 years old. I wonder if they just went through an artistic phase post WW2 and reduced the detail
After the war who knows. I can only go with what I’ve seen in the flesh so to speak. Maybe they were some dodgy 1950’s recasts

Flats are lovely and give a very different look on the table and in displays. If you are interested @lloyd then search for “zinnfiguren” on eBay and you’ll get plenty from European sellers who are using the German name. There is also a British flat miniatures society who will be able to tell you about suppliers.
On Shiny syndrome – my preference is to just go with it. It isn’t that often that I regret buying stuff and even though I’m in a gaming group I don’t play too often, my projects and interests are largely my own. My group are all into the Wild West and the Lardie’s WAC rules. I’m getting into A War Transformed but still have projects going for Silver Bayonet and Xenos Rampant which I don’t get to use on the table much. I’m really enjoying going with the shiny and control the spending by not settling on a final army list.

I’ve fallen foul of shiny syndrome but I’m at a time where now it’s not so much as I must have something but more of a “do I have time to get any worth from it.
For example the upcoming Dead Man’s Hand kickstarter is very tempting but that would mean starting a new terrain collection, new miniatures as well as the new system which to get a game to the table would take up too much time, time I already don’t have enough to all of the current things I want to do.
I like Ben’s idea of just buying a single miniature to see if you like it.

It’s always there… It will never go away I have spent so much on stuff over the years it’s scary.
That said at the start of this year I took the stand that I would only ever be backing one Kickstarter from now on and that is Dunkldorf because they are amazing and I love those figures. Plus they are ok as they are part of my grand plan for DnD (#annoygerry 1).
I have also looked at my interests and apart from DnD I have decided to focus on games which I am already invested in, such as Mortem et Gloriam and that will mean at the most an additional army a year. So manageable.
I have a passion for medieval stuff so I have branched out into The Barons War this year, but that I can focus on small bands of figures and repurpose the minis for other games and the terrain for DnD
I am also going to try and start selling off some of my other stuff that I do not use any more…but that is something for next year’s focus.
The other thing I find helps is setting deadlines. So I can focus on one project at a time. Especially if I have a club game or a tournament to come.
Also I do what Ben suggested buy a single mini and decide if I want to paint it… I did this with Moonstone and it’s sat in the box and realised I have no enthusiasm to paint it so moonstone is not for me (#annoygerry 2)
But that said I do collect rule books so shiny syndrome is here to stay
Hi backstagers. I think the having no opponents for certain new shiny syndrome attractions has had more impact on my purchases than it used to. Am usually buying two forces for my skirmish games anyway, but there’s something about lack of space at home and then the added unlikelihood of getting a game has been the tipping point. I still keep buying bits in sales etc. but quicker to buy a rules book than a starter box and minis. The lack of storage impact a book has and the opportunity to open up new ways of playing with the minis I have makes a book an easier purchase.

I deal with shiny syndrome with the clever adoption of not having any spare money any more.
In order to overcome my shiny-syndrome, I have simply been going through my pile of shame and think what dioramas I can do or forces I can paint up for specific skirmish games. I also am staying off the internet a lot and focusing on my pile. It is working for me. I have also discovered lot of stuff I will never use and I am part-exchanging them for stuff I am playing – therefore narrowing the games I play, but expanding the armies I have.
Disney already announced Ray Stevenson’s replacement but took the post down because of all the abuse they were getting from someone in Glasgow. They said they were sticking with their decision to cast James Corden. Obviously none of the lesser Hemsworths were available
For me the shiny syndrome is STL files. They tend to be relatively cheap and they take up no physical space. It’s so easy to say “one day I might want to print that”. Last month my 1 TB hard disk started running out of space and when I looked it was STL files taking up a massive chunk of the drive.

Minis boardgames have been a deep trap for me. A few years back I was enthusiastically back into painting but had no local wargaming group. But I did have a boardgame club, so started kickstarting big games full of minis I wanted to paint.
Then stuff I’d backed over a year or two all started to land and I got swamped under big projects. Since then I have found local wargamers into stuff I want to play and am now struggling with having far too many big projects waiting their turn.
I don’t regret the boardgames I bought as I like pretty much all of them, but I do want to play them painted and feel a bit reluctant to keep putting down grey plastic. But can’t find time to get it all done.
I scaled way back in Kickstarter over the he last year or so and am trying to focus on on completing projects rather than flipping between things. Not entirely successful but I have made progress this year on terrain projects and painting new purchases quickly rather than putting them at the back of the queue.
One way I try to combat “shiny syndrome” is to ask myself “what game that I’m already playing is this new game going to take time away from?”
As Ben mentions, giving yourself time to cool down by asking “let’s see if I still want that a week from now” often works too.
