Warlord Games announced a new addition to the Epic Battles range. After tackling the period of black powder and pikes, Warlord are heading back to the Ancient period and the Punic Wars for some more Historical wargaming. Hail Caesar Epic Battles sees the Romans battling against the Carthaginians and other foes that were battering at the gates of their empire.

The big boxed set from Warlord Games focuses on the period of 264 BC to 146 BC and the Punic Wars fought between the Roman Republic and Carthage. Hannibal starts his epic campaign against the Roman Empire, looking to loosen their grip on the Ancient period.

War Elephant Charge - Hail Caesar Epic Battles

At its core, the game is similar to what you'll have played before when it comes to Hail Caesar. Rick Priestley is at the helm once again and this switch to epic scale should end up making those large battles that seemed impossible at 28mm much more viable. There have been a few changes to movement and such but otherwise, the rules have been tweaked to make these epic battles very easy to play out.

The new set comes packed with options for those building mighty armies for the Punic Wars. For example, on the Roman side of things, you're going to be able to run mighty regiments of Hastati, Triarii and Principes. These Romans are a good example of where Warlord have gone with the sprue design, creating innovative infantry blocks that should be easy to build and paint.

Republican Romans - Hail Caesar Epic Battles

Rather than having to squeeze ranks of troops onto a base, you instead have the front and the back sandwiching the rank in the middle which is simply represented with heads. This seems like a great way for you to build up the massive ranks of troops that you're used to seeing in Ancient wargames and get them painted without having to sneak your brush into the fiddly bits.

As well as the Romans, you're also going to be getting miniatures for the Carthaginians as well as Gallic warriors, Libyans and Iberians.

You can see us checking out the infantry when we were at Salute last weekend in the video at the top of this article. Whilst I was immediately drawn to the Republican Romans as someone who played Rome: Total War back in the day a lot. However, the Gallic Celts look fantastic.

I also know that a lot of people are won over by the addition of so many awesome War Elephants into the mix. This seems to have been the overriding factor in people getting excited about this take on Hail Caesar.

More details are going to be coming in the near future about Hail Caesar Epic Battles including a breakdown of the sprues and the ways you can take your armies beyond the Hannibal boxed set. Pre-orders are going to be hitting the Warlord Games website in May so keep an eye out!
