Avatars Of War Marauders March With Their New Champion
August 22, 2014 by brennon
Avatars of War are marching down from the North with some deadly Marauders of the Apocalypse but the real bonus is the new Marauder Champion that comes with them, leading them into battle...
Now you can begin your march down from the North with a deadly champion at the front of the horde. I think these are going to be a perfect replacement for the ones from Games Workshop who could certainly do with an upgrade soon. In the mean time a mighty horde with an awesome character model leading the way is a great start from Avatars of War.
While the actual regiment kit is great I think the character model steals the show. I like the cloak detail, the helmet is the right side of evil without being impractical and the sword is a big burly weapon for slicing up foes with ease. A great barbarian style miniature for role-playing too!
Will you join the Marauders?

Good grief. Such good figures, but such a bad track record. These are far superior to the GW marauders, and the price is definitely right! I just wish they could get their sh*t wired tighter.
Still not seeing the other Apocalypse stuff back up there, the box sets that got taken down last year, or is it two now? Their warriors were outstanding, but I’m guessing demand outstripped production by a huge margin. Anyone know what is happening with those other sets?
BTW, with a head swap I’m thinking these would make great barbarians!
Every time I see something new from this company I know I’ll enjoy the comment section below! Marauders which are a bit better looking from the GW counterparts, but
a) nobody plays them anymore,
b) you can get a butload of GW marauders on eBay really cheap so why bother with these,
c) 35 euros for 20 minis is almost as expensive as GW! How on earth did they manage to accomplish that? Lol!
d) Hate to break it to you but Shieldwolf beat you to it first, they are very similar sculpts (both rather static) but in resin and not terrible PVC and at a fraction of that price. AoW should research the competition a bit better I believe.
e) Also, Shieldwolf has them so they can be used as barbarians, something a bit more original from “another GW copy”.
All in all, this has been another horrible surprise from these chaps, I mean what are they thinking? If you guys (from AoW) are reading this, here’s some advice, go sculpt some dwarfs from your already miserably failed IGG campaign. Maybe it will stop people from calling you names too.
Hmm… since I’m not a teen I don’t play Warhammer, so I couldn’t tell you if people do or do not use them anymore. I still paint at the store on occasion and see them as part of Chaos armies, and they still sell them, so they can’t be totally obsolete.
I spend my first hour on EBay every day, selling and looking for old GW bits while I down a pot of coffee, and I can say with certainty that marauders are no more or no less common than any other Warhammer figures, and after you factor in postage, often cost the same or even more than buying them new. EBay is very much a ‘buyer beware’ environment.
As for the price, you get 30 miniatures for $50 Canadian, whereas you pay $42 for 16 marauders form GW. That puts the price of the AoW figure at $1.70, while the GW one costs $2.60, over 50% more. I know… math is hard.
If the Shieldwolf sculpts are static, how are they better? And I agree. I also found some of the poses a bit odd. Therefore I would choose these over the Shieldwolf figures, but that is a personal preference. The Shieldwolf figures also work out to $1.80 a piece, so slightly more than the AoW ones. If you factored in barbarian heads (which I have in abundance) the cost would likely be the same.
Though I have had trouble with AoW orders in the past, in the end I always received them, and I can say that statements regarding their quality are unfounded. They are great figures. Just don’t count on seeing them any time soon after you order them!
30 miniatures is the initial offer, according to the AoW website they will afterwards sell for the same price but with 20 minis and without the champion. Therefore that would be $50 canadian for 20 AoW minis, $42 for 16 GW minis. I haven’t done the math but Shieldwolf beats them both hands up. I don’t mind them both being a bit static, I would think that AoW would do them more dynamic however they chose to follow the same path.
Anyway, I have a bucket load of the GW minis, so both leave me indiferrent.
In the past AoW used to be a great company, I was very fond of them. Their overall quality went down the drain after their crowdfunding campaign, but let’s not get back to that… Although I doubt it, I hope these sell well, especially after the not-so-good witch elves kit, maybe that will put them on the right path again, who knows?
I still use marauders. It’s how you get a horde in WOC. Great weapons and a mark stick a sorcerer in there and watch them chew through things.
