On The Table s6 ep7: Deadzone, Mouseguard & Star Trek…Engage!
November 14, 2013 by warzan
In This Episode
Welcome back to another episode of On The Table where we have some awesome stuff to show off in the wake of that epic Halloween episode! We'll be delving into the world of awesome terrain with Battle Systems and awesome stories at the hands of Mouseguard and Journey: Wrath of Demons, two firm favourites there!
As well as that we'll be checking out the epic WizKids take on Star Wars: X-Wing with Star Trek Attack Wing (Picard was always better than any Luke Skywalker I say!) and the release of Deadzone from Mantic Games.
Previous Winner
But who won the mega-competition from last episode I hear you say? Well the lucky winner of all that glorious undead goodness was...
Michal Kolomý
Well done sir and we hope you enjoy your massive booty bag of goodies that will be coming your way.
This Shows Prize

We also have a mega competition for you to get stuck in to this episode as well and this time it features the brilliant game X-Com.
With the release of X-Com: Enemy Within we'll be giving away 50 (yes 50!) Steam Codes for use on PC for the original game so you can get stuck in and warmed up for the expansion.
If you haven't heard of X-Com before, it's essentially like playing an awesome miniatures/board game on your PC where you command a squad of soldiers sent to deal with alien threats.
All you have to do to get your hands on a code is to comment on Youtube or Beasts of War and hopefully you'll be playing soon!

Love the Xcom game, weird to see it in on the table though XD.
We were looking at it and realised, it’s essentially a tabletop game translated into video game form. I’m sure we’d all love to see some Infinity mods for it 😉
BoW Ben
I will have to agree that Xcom, is one of those games that ticks the chords of a wargamer really well and its a nice game too, a worthy resurrection of the classic gold game.
Interesting fact – the designers were hitting a few brick walls while designing Enemy Unknown until they stripped it back to nothing and made a board game version. They got that to work first, then turned it back into a computer game.
James H, can I just say that its always great to bump into you on any forum and dont get a swelled head but as far as Game Designers cough cough go your my second favourite, my first being Sir Priestly. So high praise. Obviously one being a Gameing Genious the other…possibly 🙂 Love you James, now heres what I want. A Death Game Show style Skirmish game. On a nice Mat with 3D terrain but is sold as a board agme( yeah do that one!) Vehicles, Team/or single player, Objective/optional, with character development and League play, options with 80s style Fluff ala Running Man et all, MVPs, betting….etc etc etc ya get the picture! Please set in motion the gears to make this happen and let it bethe true successor to DreadBall with lovely smooth mechanics and in depth almost RPG style play. Again stand on your head BUT what if you used D20…)Thanks!
That is some very cool trivia. Thanks for that James.
Should have a look at Leviathan Warships, as it is made in the same vein. Turn based ship combat where you can customise your ships.

Another great episode guys! Lots of plastic crack to drool over!!!!
Xcom is great, glad to see you branching out a little and doing some PC games too
Ahh BoW why do you have to show me all this epic stuff? My wallet can’t handle it.
Damn it Warren i’m a student not a banker!
love xcom. I suggest the long war mod to any players.
I’ll bet my son would like to get his hands of one of those codes.
Xcom was one of my favourite games back in the day on the Amiga along with Speedball 2 and Sensi…never played this version would love to
Monkey magic! Boy, that takes me back. As a kid I somehow managed to love it while simultaneously having no clue what what actually happening.
The cardboard terrain looks pretty good. 🙂
Blimey. Xcom’s graphics have moved on just a little since the one I used to play in the olden days.
love to get my hand on dead zone, lets come x com
Dead zone is looking good.
love the Xcom game too!
this is pretty awesome that your also doing stuff with Xcom
after watching last weeks weekender i was very intrigued by xcom so i jump on youtube to have a look and the game looks awesome, i will defo be getting it, thanks warren for pointing it out to me
Will there be one for me too? 🙂
i could definitely see XCOM becoming a tabletop game. the video game is already styled as a turn based strategy game and implementing miniatures and playmats can translate the game easily. but i think i’d have a better analysis of the game if i had a copy of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. HINT, HINT! 😉
Another great news report on the gaming world. Can you please give some coverage in the next program to the Viking Hordes Kickstarter. It’s nice to see the first KS in AUS get off the ground for gaming, and it comes from Hobart, my old stomping ground. Looks like a fun and easy game to introduce Kids to Tabletop Wargamming, and is a cross over from a computer game.
I’m going to have to keep a eye out for Dust adventure it sounds pretty interesting. I wish I had the extra cash to get in on the Journey Kickstarter, it looks awesome.
Xcom is always a good time.
Battle systems terrain highlight of the week for me
got a group of friends going to the mantic open day including the guy i shared an order with so we’ll be getting our kickstarter goodiesend of the month 😀 looking foward to it and that terrain looks grand! wondering how to fit deadzone on it in it’s entirety curse mat based play!
That sci fi terrain is looking great. looks perfect for a star wars RPG.
love the kickstarter projects coming out recently! i’m still waiting for my raging heroes to get ready, they do have put out some amazing sculpts.
Ah man, talk more about Raging Heroes’, the stuff from their Kickstarter is really looking good!
http://kck.st/1aF97Yw
The Battle Systems terrain looks cool.
How have I missed these episodes (or this actual site). Pretty hawt stuff and in really nice and compact form. You got one new user \o/
I would like an XCOM key.
Glad x com is getting coverage, it’s a great game and deserves all the press it can get. Have you guys ever thought about doing a K’S only episode? There’s certainly enough going on to WARRENT it!
I’ve herd a lot of good things about this game. And now a chance for me to get my hands on a copy, Great! So please chose me. It’s my birthday in 10 days.
Here’s a comment.
Can’t wait to get my first Deadzone delivery! Going to be awesomely epic.
Xcom looks pretty cool too, may have to check that out.
Both the wife an I love X-Com. It works better on screen than on the table because of the alien hidden movement bits, imo, but if someone could manage to simulate that (without some poor guy essentially playing in a notebook perpetually checking LOS to reveal – yawner) I’d be all over it.
I strangely like the sound of mouseguard :/
Cant wait for Deadzone. Journey looks interesting as well.
Woo, XCOM
So much cool stuff, great episode again. Can’t wait for my Deadzone kickstarter stuff to arrive, roll on December. Squeeeee……..
Nice to see a promo spot for Battle Systems. Would love to give X-Com a go as well.
This computer game has been on my list to check out for a while. Looking forward to seeing more on this expansion as well!
XCOM would make a sweet hybrid euro-wargame.
And I cannot wait to see the fantasy version of that terrain from Battle Systems. Loved the look of the future scape, but I just don’t play any games requiring that.
great vid has always!!!
x-com is very cool
I need to win the lottery… Haha
XCom looks soooo good!
XCOM is a real classic.
I like the sisters of battle electronic codex upgrade. I also look forward to the Inquisition codex we’ve been hearing about these days.
Xcom enemy unknown 1994 was the sole reason for my first pc purchase. Xcom enemy unknown 2012 was why I bought an xbox 360.
I used to love X-COM when the original came out years ago, looks like I will need to pick this one up.
Great episode, Journey: Wrath of Demons looks amazing right now, and only getting better.
I’ll probably buy the Battle System terrain although it seems a little flimsy.
LOVE X-COM! Met some of the developers last year at Comicon. Would love to see the new stuff!
I also cant’ wait to see what else this company puts out!
A buddy of mine just got into Xcom. Please give me a steam code so I can kick his a#* online.
think will be getting star trek post xmas already have x-wing and love it!
The Battle system stuff looks cool. I will check it out. Might be usefull for AvP or Infinity.
A game based on journey to the west, must buy 😀
Always wanted xcom…. Never got round to buying it
The possibilities for that terrain are endless. Heck I’d even fancy a quick 40k kill-team game in there!
played the XCOM demo, its awesome…
Love those Darklands figures. they look excellent.
Flipping great, all that great stuff and I cant get the monkey magic theme out of my head now.
‘journey to the west’ it is then
Nice info in this one for me. Didn’t know that Adrian was a part of the Journey game!! 😀
Having not played computer games in a few years now, it was nice to see a turn based game like Xcom. I do understand it correctly by thinking it is turn based?
I’ve heard great things about X-COM.
Deadzone really reminds me of Necromunda, certainly a good thing in my book! Necromunda was one of those game’s which GW really, really, shouldn’t have gotten rid of.
I never got a chance to play Necorumunda but I would really like to now 🙁
Im getting back into my computer games after a year off. A free copy of xcom would be awesome
Beautiful Darklands models. I have some of them and they are even better than the photos.
I want Xcom 🙂
Sweet. I would love to win the code and play the new incarnation of the game. The original one blew me away.
I wish I had any money to give that kickstarter looks amazing. I have been eyeing it for a few days now and still blow away.
You gotta be in it to win it!
me win win win!!
cool i have been on the look out for another good tactical video game.
Nice job guys, thanks.
Necromunda is still being played. Rules have been improved by the community (I found the original rules to be a bit of a downer). I love my Delaque gang, consisting mostly of heresy miniatures.
I can not wait for the addon to xcom as I have played every one of the ufo games
Havent played x-com in a very long time! The new version looks cracking.
And BoW strike again ! awesome ;p
I love your “on the table” serie, a lot of good news, keep the good work guys, i’m cheering on you
The new XCom expansion looks really cool…very much like computer version of the By Dagger or Talon for Tomorrow’s War!
I’ve been considering X-Com for a while now, just never got around to trying it and the expansion looks nice.
Hm… Every time after watching an episode of On The Table I feel the desire to buy either a new board or war game. 😉
XCOM BABY!!!
Never played XCOM, but I would love to!
What do wargamers like better, X-COM or Fire Emblem?
I’m going to have to check Dust Adventures out! Also, please count me in for a copy of X-COM! 🙂
Journey: Wrath of Demons looks very good. Nice figurines in there. I have look at the kick starter and I might go for it. Nice episode again…keep up the good work
Man I love the X-Com games, cant wait to enjoy all the gunfights, management and deaths again (only this time with mechs and biologically engineered super soldiers)!
I would love a Steam code!
Yes, sir, got to get me some Firaxis lovin’ going.
I remember playing Ufo Defence back in the day 😀 Was soo awesome yet sooooo damn hard!
another great show. keep em coming
I think x-com is the best video game that feels like a table top game. It’s awesome!
Battle system looks good enough to eat !!!
There are so many good Kickstarters out now just have no money for them AVP looks awesome!
Xcom looks like a lot of fun. Battle system looks great for infinity.
Keep meaning to pick up Xcom, just keep putting it off until I have time to actually play it
That steam game looks reminds me of Infinity…awesome!!
XCOM is one of the best PC game around, I’ve been waiting for this expansion anxiously..
yet another epic episode. keep up the good work.
i’ve never played Xcom, but i have heard a lot of really good things about it, hope i win a copy
X-Com? Sign me up!
I’d love to win the XCOM!
My steam name is dijnsk, so IF im so lucky to win one of the codes, find me on steam and we can have some games!
That X-com certainly does look interesting!
Dead zone does look great. One to watch!
the expansion to X-Com looks awesome! Would love to see random maps added to the game!
Gluck to everyone on the draw :p
I had never even heard of this game a week ago, a friend asked if i played it, what??
Now everyone is talking about it!
Must have been sleeping for the last couple of years, since I only just heard of XCOM.. Now I’m not sleeping because.. Must play – cannot rest. it’s within…
i love XCOM : EU, really gets me excited for whitemoon dream’s warmachine title.
i have been a pc gammer since 1994, i had no idea TT wargaming was even a thing till DoW 1. once i discovered BoW ( nids week ) i have consumed just about every vid you guys have done since.
i am very excited that BoW is branching out into other gaming genres, looking forward to the next 5 years and maybe another nids week next month >P.
I remember playing XCOM back in the day. Looks like it has come a long way!
i may have to get the xcom games just to play against you guys!
Watched a couple of multiplayer vids of Xcom, looks great! Heres hoping I can get my hands on a code.
So how close is the new Xcom to the original?
Nice to see a video game company sponsoring BOW with such a good giveaway
Love the Xcom Games. Great show
That’s a good chance for many of us getting something.
Xcom looks interesting but sadly I haven’t played it. I play both tabletop games and real-time strategy games on my PC so I think the combination of the two formats is very smart indeed!
actually showing and describing the Journey kickstarter was a big plus. It’s a little opaque on the kickstarter description and doesn’t give the feel and flavor of it.
Xcom is great. Haven’t played the expansion yet. My favourite board gamey video game is valkyria chronicles though.
I have never played the game but would love to give it a try
I pretty much was in love with the original UFO Enemy Unknown back in the days, I won’t be surprised if it had some influence on me becoming a wargamer (but then again, maybe I was playing it the first time because of X-Files, it was a big hit back then, so I might became a wargamer because of David Duchovny? Odd…). Too bad I already own the new Enemy Unknown so I’m out of competition.
And thinking about the wargaming – video gaming fusions, any chance of resurrecting Panzer General? 🙂
Great show as always.
Haven’t yet got round to buying X-Com, was waiting to see if it came up on the Steam Christmas sale.
X-Com…
How many hours I spent with fighting underwater aliens in Terror from the Deep? It’s the only game for what I would install Windows on my Mac 😀
The wait fro dreadball will be better with some X-Com games
Haven’t really played any video games for a while other than a little Fifa occasionally with my son but Xcom looks interesting and wouldn’t mind giving it a go 🙂
Has anyone played Dropzone at a con yet? Looks fun and I’m curious how fast it plays.
If i don’t get the code but buy the game myself, can i actually play with you live ? I’m considering it as an option.
Also what other games do you play ? I have Space Marine and Dawn of War 2 : Retribution 😀
Another great episode og one the table 🙂
OMFG. All the T-shirts you are wearing.
Don’t know which I’m more excited about, Deadzone or Battlesystems! Can’t wait to be playing the former with a bunker entrance on the board leading down to a whole new level that plays concurrently. These two seem so perfectly matched. I love the XCOM flavour to DZ too!
Love On the Table, you just give me the correct dose of game addiction I need.
great episode. played xcom was impressed with the game play.
Nemesis looks really promising.
and xcom… yeah. i loved the UFO series 🙂
I LOVE MINI’S!!!! I’m so glad Beasts of war are still going and going strong and i especially love the addition of video games
Just catching up on my missed BOW vids from the weekend.
Not a massive video gamer, but just seeing the few demo shots you has in here is looks like it is a good adaptation of a TTG. Will be looking into this in more depth – thanks for being the information point again
Count me in
Huge fan of the Original XCom UFO and Terror from the Deep. Picked up the new version for the XBOX and really enjoy it. Enemy Within looks great and I hope it continues to live up to the hype.
There are so many nice projects coming out. Where do I find the time?
The Journey minis look amazing. Mouseguard sounds very enjoyable. And the idea of Castle Wolfenstein RPG made me laugh.
X-Com is something I’ve heard of before. But now that I’ve seen a bit more of it I would really like to play the game.
Here’s to the hope that they will rerelease Darkslands as well
Love this show, and I agree Deadzone will be amazing!
Guys, you are so cool! 🙂 To get a chance to win the new X-Com game only by put a comment here is awesome! 😀 This made my day! 🙂
Here’s hoping for an actual tabletop version of XCOM.
Who wouldn’t just love to paint up some of those little grey men.
Love it, Love Xcom, would love the next one!
XCOM…not really sure how I’ve missed this game. Looks amazing and has a Steam rating of 89/100. I may have to put the toy soldiers down for a bit and give this a whirl.
I was looking forward to playing Xcom then my ps3 died and buying it again for PC at the time seemed a bit much of a price to pay. But it’s a great game.
I had never considered XCom until Lloyd mentioned it on last weekends Weekender. Had to go check it out and go tthe first one…Enemy Unknown. Not had much time to play it yet mind you.
A free expansion would be jolly well appreciated though.
Still the best squad based/turn based combat game. i LOVE ME SOME XCOM!
Anyone have info about the Mouseguard RPG? The official website doesn’t have much info besides the 2008 and 2011 edition.
Sweet… Finally. *-*
Love the Xcom series!
X com really is a great board game in video game for
I have the first one, Iron man mode or nothing!
fan of the xcom . nice take from the old school game i use to play.. looking forward to the expansion… really need to look at that new terrain sets as well. great episode looking forward to more
I saw rythian (yogscast) do a playthrough
Wanted it ever since 🙂
I would love one of those codes
I want some Xcom! Pick me, pick me!!! Also I have to +1 the idea for an infinity mod. That would be awesome.
TBH I’m not surprised you’d be promoting this game in some way, desptie all it’s flaws it is a very good tactical strategy game, similar to Infinity.
love turn based strategy since we dont have to many enthusiastic mini gamers here.its not quite the same feel as playing with your own painted minis, but a junky takes their fix any way they can! lol j/k
Always loved Xcom and pritymuch got or had em all.
The New one I love even though seems a little cut down it still works and for me the best part…
Is that I can play Xcom do a turn and while the badguys and toasting my butt I can build my models for what ever system I’m working on.
I’ll have to try Xcom.
I’m in… get me a copy of XCOM
I still play the original X-com pc game, it’s a great game.
Would love to take a crack at the XCom game, seen it on a few other video game review site. quick question, is there a reason I’m not seeing any new podcast up on ITunes ?
Love the mention of Mouse Guard, great RPG
