The Last Market of Bataar – terrain challenge

About the Project
This is my project log for an Age of Sigmar terrain piece, for the Terrain Challenge 'end is nigh' comp 2018. It's inspired by the tales of the floating city of Bataar from the Realm of Fire - Age of Sigmar. The new core book gives us the background that this once powerful trading city that was over run during the Age of Chaos, after the destruction of the Iron Armada. I'm looking to make a remnant of the huge merchant hub, a broken floating ship - really just a trading post now, a last reminder of the once great market. I hope to share my thinking and choices all the way through this project. This will be a terrain piece and not a diorama or display board, so the level of detail (for now at least) will reflect that, due to time and budget, plus as a gaming piece I need to leave room for the models to game over in/over it.

Cutting the hull
Well looks like life and work has conspired against this project getting done for the deadline, but pushing ahead all the same. Here’s the hull marked up for cutting.
With the hull cut to sections it was time to put it together and test for sizing.
Second sketch
I angled the plan image to give me a sense of perspective, also using the mat grid to help with the sketch
This second sketch is more accurate is the proportions of the ship to buildings. Also added some planting, as I’m thinking they we want some food. Still need to decide the height this flies at and make sense there is a docking ramp for Overload ships to moar up for trading. Also need to add all the higher planks and walkways to make this more of a necromunda type setup. Next stage – cut the ship up 🙂
collecting core elements
Always had planned for this build to use a playmobil ship as the core of the construction. It’s strong, will cut up and still add structure, plus it’s a big boat! From the reference (see the project main image) the ship seemed to be ship hulls, so this seems like a no brainer. Also measured out to 24″x24″ to make sure it never becomes too big for use on a gaming table.
Next I wanted to use some sector mechanicus boilers and pipework to help explain why this market ship floats in the air. The next job is to make craft board templates to understand what happens when the hip is cut up.
Will be using Lake town house kits so made square for thee footprint. Only getting 2 kits so I’m planning on cutting the top floor off one of them to make more coverage.
With everything cut out – it’s time to label
this is the first layout – ship cut into sections to open up the hold area for the market, see my earlier sketch. Then adding the pipework and house elements. One thing this has shown me is that, I might be able to get more out of the house kits just using fronts. If you see at the bow, I might be about to blank off the insides and get more use from the shorter sides. Kits don’t arrive til later next week so will wait for then and a better fitting. Also not shown is the great walkways will should add height to whole thing. Next job is to take this and make it into a new sketch.
First Sketch
Stage 1 – Decide a size of the finalised piece. Only roughly, because there are many settings before you get to start gluing stuff together.
Stage 2 – What’s at the core of this project – for me I want to use a playmobil pirate ship. It’s bringing the right shape and chunky volumes and I can cut it up and it will still hold it’s shape. It will be the backbone of the market.
Stage 3 – Make a sketch. It might not be anything like the final piece, but it’s good for understanding parts, heights, number of elements, which is the front…
Project reference
Always like to start a project off with a pinterest board, collecting everything from colourways, textures, so details or just stunning vistas that inspire me. You can also add a widget to your chrome browser to save images straight out of a websearch or webpage onto your board.
