Wild West of Kickstarters, Food & The Lack There Of!
February 22, 2014 by dignity
It's been another huge week in the world of wargaming and on today's Weekender the guys will be chatting about the cool Kickstarters that have caught their eye, the Wild West Exodus two player starter set, fit club, the Warzone Mutant Chronicles RPG and a whole host of other gaming goodness.
Now we mentioned three links on the show so here they are:

Great show, good too see some WWX love. I backed the kickstarter and would love the game to get more coverage to get more interested, as it is competing in the small scale skirmish game category with warmahordes
as for the fit club im just into week 1 of weightwatchers as I needed some extra help, I am actually surprised what I am allowed to eat. I can still eat meat, just cut the fat out, still eat rice/pasta/bread, just switch to brown.
We’re really looking forward to giving WWX a proper run out shortly 🙂
Wild west exodus looks fantastic, excellent sculpts and and a very unique feel to it.
I gotta say, I’m very impressed with the detail and quality they have managed to pull off straight out of the gate.
I think the real world game they were thinking of is Jai alai, which uses a hand launcher to throw the ball very quickly.
I get what you mean, Justin. When you’re playing a game with a design philosophy based heavily around synergies, it’s much easier to build combos using cards than a rulebook. In my CCG days, it was always much easier to deck tech with the cards than a print out of the spoilers. Infinity has a release schedule like a game with stat cards but doesn’t use them and it’s been a big barrier to the game taking root in our group. By contrast, WM/H was picked up straight away and stuck because it had stat cards that made it easy… Read more »
Ahhh ‘deck tech!’ that’s what he meant! 😉
And suddenly the fog lifts before my eyes 🙂
You can export your army lists in Infinity army builder as printable set of profiles with all the stats. So you just choose the minis you’re interest them and have them printed on some A4.
The problem came earlier in the process than that. It didn’t get as far as army building. Without stat cards I couldn’t get anyone involved beyond a quick demo.
Also, the units are updated online at no charge to the players and there’s never any need to get the new version of whatever has come out.
I’m glad that my efforts to get people playing Infinity have met with such approval
did you mean guild ball instead of slaughter ball
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1248312770/guild-ball-a-tabletop-medieval-football-game?ref=live
No. I’m quite sure he meant what he said. 😉
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frogthewhatgames/slaughterball?ref=users
should better check my spelling for slaughter next time then. only some found something non gaming related. Already knew about guild ball from twitter and the fools daily podcast who dedicated a week with the devs about it. which you can find here http://malifools.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/daily/
I think Guild Ball looks stunning, I’ll be talking more about it once I’ve had a chance to find out more about it.
As to Back Stagers, I think you are possibly losing out by not allowing a single month payment. It put me off joining for months because you have to subscribe with a paypal direct debit, and paypal do not make it easy to cancel.
Er… Unless it’s changed you just go to paypal and hit cancel. I ended up doing it in the past when BoW got very light on Backstage content at one point.
The way I look at it is simple, BOW is basically an online magazine (a considerably inexpensive one at that, but with amazingly high quality content!), by not being a subscriber, people are reading the magazine and putting it back in the rack and not supporting the content that they have just enjoyed. Irrelevant of whether backstage content is light or not, they provide a lot for the community as a whole with the site, so I support it. Simple as that.
Like Tasker says, you just have to log in to paypal and cancel it if you don’t want it anymore. It’s very easily done. That said, once you’ve tried it, you’ll not want to cancel it 🙂
Oh aye. I don’t think i’ll ever cancel again. I think the amount of Backstage content is pretty bloomin’ good these days. Especially for the price.
Thanks Guys
Went round in circles till I found a cancel button and then not even 100% it does that because of the wording they use, not cancelled BTW, just thought it would be a good idea to let people by just 1 magazine and not have to subscribe to it.
Great show as always guys, but yikes the swearing this week! Usually watch this in the same room as my kids without headphones so I’m not shutting them out, but even with the bleeps they were looking across at me as if to say “do you honestly think this is age appropriate, daddy?” Clearly fit club is taking a massive toll! 😉 Really excited about the website updates though. Have found it really difficult to use the search function on the site, so that huge wealth of content can be very difficult to sift through especially if you’re not quite… Read more »
Search function doesn’t even work on my phone… *coughs* @lloyd
Its currently running Google search, but its not great, once we get a few weeks of updates under our belt we’ll start looking into swapping it out entirely and try and make search smarter.
First we’re trying to make browsing better though.
Sorry about that! – Will wash the mouth out for the next episode 🙂
The old ‘fog of war’ mechanic….
Speaking of awesome kickstarters, if you’re into roleplaying games, check out Project: Dark by Will Hindmarch. It’s a card-driven (like playing cards) stealth-oriented RPG where the players are thieves, assassins and spies. It works well with only one player and a GM (or the usual party of four). The cost is dirt cheap because the creator is modest in his goals. He just wants to publish an awesome game and make it widely available. He’s not trying to start a new miniatures empire or produce leatherbound collector’s editions. The project has reached the custom deck of cards stretch goal, however.… Read more »
Sounds really neat!
oooh will have to have a look at that!
Haha! Watching while eating my breakfast this morning. My wife is walking around the house, doing her morning business. She hears Warren say “My Fitness Pal”, probably the only words she actually heard in the entire video, and says, “Oh I use that!” Congratulations, you’ve connected with my non-gaming wife for the first time, ever (though she uses it to try to gain weight actually, thyroid).
I do try my best to never connect with non gaming wives 😉 but it can happen!
I wondered in the past if my thyroid was under active, but now I’m coming to the sad realisation that I’m just a greedy ****!
I only just joined the website in…December I think? I saw On the Table over on Geek& Sundry. I came over to the website and had to sign up. I’ve mostly been a board/video gamer, but you guys got me all excited and I am venturing in the world of Miniatures gaming with my very own copy of Deadzone. I bought paints and everything. So thanks for introducing me to a fun new hobby. Regarding Backstage, I normally don’t subscribe to websites, but you guys put out such quality stuff that I had to toss in a few bucks. Like… Read more »
You’re most welcome @ghostbear!
Thank you for helping to keep the whole thing running!
@warzan the looks I did get from herself while you where talking fit-club priceless 😉 as for the beeping I’ll have to say it never bothered me.
and 3 Sports games to look at the moment … I might end up being a fitness freak, watching fit-club and playing ball games 😉
@ Warzan. Just a quick tip to help with portion control.(And stop obsessing about counting calories!) Each meal should have . One hand sized portion of protein rich natural food.(Eggs, chicken, fish, beans etc.) One hand sized portion of complex carbohydrate .(Rice, cereals, pasta, baked/boiled (sweet)potatoes.etc) One hand sized portion of vegetables (Excluding potatoes, especially chips and crisps!Lol) You can swap out the veg for fruit.(At breakfast and dinner.) 3 or 4 meals made up of natural food like this will let you eat well and still loose weight. You may loose more weight eating 2000 calories of quality food… Read more »
Thanks for this! Good ready reckoner that!
These look great! When you say 35mm, is it 35mm to the top of the head or the eyes?
Technically when we talk scale its always about the average ‘human’ (or equivalent) and measures to the eyes.
In this case I haven’t checked, so can’t 100% say for sure, BUT… that’s how it should be.
14 mins , looks like Justin wants to lamp Warren one tbh!
@dignity loves me … sometimes I fear too much 😉
WWX does look rather impressive…and I’m not even that big into westerns.
I’ll have to check out some videos on how it plays though before I get committed. But it has my attention.
I will say that the plastic my friend got in his WWX pledge were some of the very best I’ve seen in the business. Better than Malifaux and at least on par with GW’s.
hi everyone at BOW I love watching your weekenders every week but (even though I can understand why) you seem to be GW bashing, each week you bring up information on a new game system which I like seeing although every single one you are comparing to either 40K or fantasy with the new game having good points and the GW games being the negative please don’t think I am some kinda GW fanboy as I do play other system but if your not going to cover their stuff like the new dwarfs or the new style white dwarf then… Read more »
To be fair I don’t think they are bashing GW or their games, just comparing on what they prefer, but I can see how it can be a bit negative at times though..
We often compare and contrast with a GW game (most likely 40K) for the very simple reason that by some estimates, that’s what 80% of the entire market place are playing (or have played). So when we describe a mechanic or element of a game, sometimes it’s a useful ‘benchmark’ to describe how it differs from 40K and what the effects of that might be. In the video above, I’m trying to convey the potential freedom for releases a game can have when its based on stat cards, where as the 40K model requires a complete codex update before it… Read more »
Also between me you and these four walls, sometimes we’re applying a little bit of pressure where we can to see things improve 😉
Don’t worry you and every other 40K player are among friends with us as we are fans of the game.
@biggazi I think it is more the community bashing GW for this that and the other rather than BoW itself. Also, hasn’t it always been that way I mean even before the advent of the internet you always had a large amount of discontent over any number of things. Just now a days things are amplified because of this soap box called the net. I am just as guilty as the next guy and I am pretty sure we will all never just get along- We are war gamers man, Some of the bashing could be due to the fact… Read more »
“I have been in that same toy box quite a bit”
What a lovely image to have stuck in my mind before going to bed lol 😉
I’m more worried about what she might have done to your poor toy box over the last 18 years mate 😉
Ok so I looked into the WWX game as I love steampunk and this vid intrigued me to it.. So after looking at it I looked into union, and saw Abe Lincoln… He better be a Vampire Hunter haha that’s hooked me at least a little 🙂 But seriously I did enjoy it and enjoyed the unboxing of the starter set, I really like the bases as they remind me of small plinths, making them seem more like showpieces that you can play out rather than a generic gaming piece, if they are the same size as the Malifaux bases,… Read more »
I think they already have been released, they are under ‘Mercs” and you can buy them separately or all in one box called ‘The Wayward 8 Mercenary box set’
Hey Warren…I managed to lose nigh on a stone in a month simply from cutting out chocolate, added fat, salt and sugar (so no take-aways, biscuits, pastry, chocolate or alcohol or fried foods) instead using fruit/natural honey for my sugar and fish/bread for my salt intake. I also switched from semi-skimmed to skimmed milk. Now my favourite breakfast is porrage oats, 1:1 with milk in a bowl, with some frozen summer fruits mixed in and cooked in the microwave for 3 minutes – the berries explode and it’s fething awesome! I’ve found that steamed veg is the best, now the… Read more »
@warpspawned Now I LOVE LOVE LOVE the tip on the tin foil parcels.
Good job on the Deadzone, make sure and keep us posted on how you get on with it!
Warren, could the outlaws be a Firefly band in Deadzone?
What a ******* cool idea, yes they would make amazing Rebs – Space Cowboys FTW
Aren’t the Rebs basically Firefly characters in Deadzone? I know I’ll be painting them that way. 😀
Your plan to change the web site to cover more games is a good one. Having just moved I know people will have old games they don’t play cause of lack of interest & the like. So you may find a lot of interest from people who didn’t know they existed.
HI guys, Great show. Hearing Warren last week about starting fat club, got me back in the gym for the first time in 6 months. Gonna check out that MyFitness Pal. Sounds like just what i need. About your site updates, I have one request. The specific areas organized by genre etc are great, but when you enter a “hub” or search a game system…can it organize content by the date published, starting with most recent as this will make it easier to find older content covering an area of interest. Took me 20 mins to find the Deadzone demo… Read more »
I will look into this kind of thing for sure
Forgot to mention I was fascinated with the experiments Lloyd was talking about. I used to love Horizon and Tomorrows World. Don’t get them over here though 🙁
If anyone members the 1980’s Grendil War Child comic series, that’s where the iron horse’s from WWX really look similar. Was a really top notch art work in that series.I always loved the look and was hoping someone would eventually make similar mini’s.
