was 1 click away from buying 4 boxes of these until i read they 1st have mettal 2nd they dont come with enough noise guns for the whole squad.
they should at least have 1 noise gun type for each man.
Why such fetish with plastic?
Beyond that, its a joke of a kit, providing only one signature weapon when a whole squad can be equipped with it and providing enough parts to have only 3 out of 8 members with something extra to diversify them as sculpts from standard chaos marines.
Why would anyone pick this up is beyond me.
And they only come in 8 models because GW will not redesign the chaos marines sprue if they can avoid it for the next decade.
Thats the thing – they have redesigned it! I have no idea why GW doesn’t just retire the old 8 man sculpt and makes the new 10 man squad the basic sprue across all the metal cult marines.
Gives them space for plastic 1000 Sons or something 😉
Thousand Sons are 9. 🙂 I really enjoyed the specialized chaos troops reviews.
The unit sizes are bit odd.
The Thousand Son and Plague Marine boxes, are 9 and 7 respectivly which are the sacred numbers of Tzeentch and Nurgle.
Slannesh’s sacred number is 6 so a box of 8 has just been randomly plucked out the air it seems.
Khornes number is 8 so having 12 in a box is another odd choice. With the Khorne Berserker box if I remember right they were released after the initial 10 Space Marine multipart plastic box and priced the same. As the Berserkers didn’t come with a heavy weapon, special weapon, or champion option they seem to have stuck an extra 2 torsos and legs in instead, resulting in the box of 12 Berserkers.
Also if I remember correctly back then the rules allowed standard chaos marines to be armed with either bolters or pistols and combat weapons but the actual chaos marine plastic box back then didn’t come with enough combat weapons to arm a full squad that way, another possible reason why there were more in the berserker box and plastic berserkers were released in the first place?
I’ve not played in many years so I don’t know how the options for Noise Marines are worked out now, but back in 3-4th edition you could equip the full unit with sonic weapons, something that made the Noise Marine set seem very poor indeed. The Blastmaster (which is the long barreled one I think) was the heavy weapon so was restricted in number, while the Sonic Blaster acted like a supercharged bolter and could be given to any number of marines in the squad.
That made only getting 1 of each sonic weapon in the box seem a bit rubbish. I personally don’t have any issues with metal models as long as they are nice metal models and I would have been happy with Noise Marines being a box of 6 (sacred number) metal fully slannesh detailed marines all packing sonic weapons, rather than a box of 8 plastic marines with a handful of slannesh pieces chucked in.
You would assume that creating a dedicated plastic upgrade sprue would be all that the Noise Marines, Thousand Sons and Berserkers would need to convert the basic box into these units, Plague Marines I do feel would need whole new models.
Even with the apparant costs of making molds, if these upgrade sprues were sold via mail order for a decent price when a basic box was bought it would probably be very successful.
The company may be of the mindset that the sales wouldn’t be big enough for plastics of these “elite” units to be profitable, but with an upgrade sprue they wouldn’t need to be produced in large numbers so the wear on the mold wouldn’t be so great, over time they would surely turn a profit and it would only be 3 sprues, less than most new units have, to cover the 3 units.
The last Codex was so much cooler for building your Legion themed marines. Not only the 4 major cult legions but also Word Bearers, Alpha Legion etc.. I might bother to build a Thousand Sons army with the next dex, if it allows a cool fluffy one, but the way GW is acting currently it seems my money will go to Privateer Press
Oh gods, not wanting to make a post that ended up rediculously long even longer but…
I agree that when the Chaos Marine sprue was redesigned they should have set it out so you had a basic parts sprue (legs, torsos etc…) then one of 4 options sprues depending on the set. So the Standard Marines would have a sprue with basic helmets, heavy weapons, special weapons and so on, Noise Marines would have styled helmets and sonic weapons, Berzerkers would have helmets and Chainaxes, Thousand Sons would have helmets, tabards and some sorcerer parts. Even Nurgle could be worked into that system with helmets and rotted chest fronts.
I really don’t understand what GW is thinking.
In the old codex you got the troop champion for free when having the holy number of the chaos god. But with the new codex one couldn’t care less for things like that. Because some brilliant mind in GW decided that armies with a theme or some originally are bad.
They took out the holy numbers and the themed armies of the Chaos gods, the Imp Guard doctrins and the Space Marines traits for no apparent reason.
It’s not just the specialised Chaos choices, nearly every army has that problem.
I’m about to starting a new Fantasy army and now I have to realize that every frigging troop box has to few models to make a decent unit. Chaoswarriors come in a box of twelve, Orks in a box of 16 bretonnian knights in a box of frigging 8!. In the older editions when a regiment only had to be 4 wide this was perfect but now that they need to be 5 wide you are forced to buy at least 3 boxes just to make 2 decent units or 1 horde.
I’m just happy that Mantic makes such awesome army deals or I would never able to afford an Undead Army.
Maybe I don’t see the greater scheme behind GW’s strategies but I sure hope someone grows a brain or at least starts to care about there customers and sees them as more then mere walking bags of money who need to be mugged.
Enough ranting, I apologize in advance for my english but I hope it’s understandable.
Do not forget that Mantic is also coming out with their one game rules.
And this should cost no were near what GW is selling WF for.
I think it’s probably for two reasons. The first being to get people to pay more for a full set of units (though why they couldn’t just charge more per box I don’t know) and the second being to “balance” the game which clearly hasn’t worked, as we can see from Darrell’s relentless cheese mongering. So really all they’ve done is made the game less interesting, while making it inaccessable the costomer at the same time… At the exact same time that they are beginning to see hightened intrest in their product, great timing GW; great timing.
These models are nice but i prefer the old noise marines, the ones where the sonic weapons are in the shape of guitars! and i prefer the mad heads one i think had a huge grin with a demonic type tougne stick out of its mouth!
The “why not in plastic” debate is going to run and run. At least until GW cops on and realises that producing rank and file units in metal or hybrid kits is not the way to go.
Personally I hope that when the next Codex: Chaos Space Marines comes out GW will have seen the demand out here and will realise the need for all-plastic god-aligned Chaos Space Marines.
The conversion posibilities if we had all plasic Nurgle, Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Khorne and unaligned Space Marine kits… I think my heart just skipped a beat, lol!
I don’t think we will see nurgle troops in plastic at least not so easy, I don’t think a plastic mould can support such design.
Plastic moulds can support any design metal moulds can, it’s all about money.
I disagree, even with the new techniques that GW does possess but not uses, you cannot avoid undercuts in injection molding.
Added Benefit of a Full Metal Army: Great upper body workout if you keep lugging around 2000pts of pewter toy soldiers every week. 🙂
Its not so severe and I do speak from experience.
In a way GW fixed this set by selling sonic blaster bitz online. The reson why you don’t see them on the table is because they are way over priced for what the do.
To start I am on the opposing camp, that of metal miniatures, so my opinion might not be liked much.
I firmly believe the “plastic mania” is something GW carefully cultivated over the years to make the production of plastics not only acceptable from the community, but also demanded, separating them from their opposition who, in their minds at least, could not follow them.
So what is the advantage of plastic, for starters its cheap, moulds are on the expensive side, but will virtually last forever in contrast of the RTV moulds for metal miniatures that need replacement every so often, it also allows a level of automation that RTV moulds cannot give because they need human assistance (and extra manpower) they also make inventory easy because all parts of a model (or models) in on one sprue so you must track sprue and not parts and of course any excess is recyclable, all the above are the industrial advantages that have some merit to the modeller is the cost saved from them is passed to him.
Another Advantage is the “plastic glue” since it isn’t a glue but a plastic solvent, two parts melted into a bond will always glue better than two parts held together by a thin strip of adhesive.
The disadvantages in my opinion are many, for starters you loose any organic forms and get models with many undercuts and many unnecessary parts to overcome the undercuts problem, you loose in sculpture dynamic partly because the press mould needs the model to be flat since it cannot do undercuts but mainly to maximise the ease of conversions, that is the main defence I get for plastic models, in my opinion you do not get ease of conversions with plastic models, if you need to cut reposition and greenstuff the model resculpting at least part of detail, then its not an easy conversion, its the same with converting a metal model maybe with a bit easier cutting, likewise all the extras like holsters, knifes, pouches and so on, since they have not sculpted on the miniature, but designed to fit on any miniature assembled from the parts of the sprue, more often than not look like they were just glued on the model than been part of it, on top of al the above you get the usual loss of detail plastic models get.
Metals are not the god send thing either, they cost more, the moulds tend to deteriorate so the last batch of the mould may have serious issues with quality if the company insists on using the mould till the end and not retiring it earlier, are more difficult to cut and do not come with many extras if at all, since many small parts make the inventory storage a hell incarnate, but hold detail better than plastics, can hold organic form and in extension dynamic poses and need fewer parts per model because of this.
For me the things lost in a plastic model are more than the things gained for being plastic, so I prefer metal models over plastic ones.
Good quality metal miniatures are certainly very easy to work with. Often they require far less work to prepare and sometimes the extra weight can help when it comes to conversions.
The difficulties come when trying to convert metal models that have lots going on, like cloaks, capes, tabards, heavy armour all sculpted on. Many metal models where the limbs are away from the body or not linked by clothing are just as easy to work with as plastic.
For me though GW’s metal models are far from high quality, the sculpts might be good but the actual molding and finishing leave a lot to be desired, not to mention the super glue repellant that they seem to add to their metal. Also the very bulky and busy nature of GW’s style often makes it harder to take their metal models appart compared to most 28mm true scale models.
Well, I have to agree GW metals are of the low end of quality, even new models like sternguard have issues in alignment of parts, excessive flash and misalignments, on the bright side because the metal mould shrinks they are more thin and proportionate than their plastic counterparts.
But companies that produce far better metal models exist.
There is way too much metal in GW. Eldar are the worst for it. All the elite, hq choices and some of the troops are metal. The only plastic in my army are dire avengers and tanks.
I have no problem with metal, as long as they are not too big. The hive Tyrant was a nightmare to assemble.
I prefer plastic for conversion work. It is a lot easier to cut and shape.
But trying to get plastic and metal hybrids to go together is a pain.
Noise Marines clearly listen to & play Rammstein… After all, they are metal.
those noise marines are fairly old models (hence the metal guns) but you can buy sets of the guns on the web-site so you can make units of them easily enough (assuming someone hasn’t already posted about them)
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1400035
You get 5 sonic blasters and one blastmaster.
Seriously…£13.50 for 6 arms and guns…that is rediculous.
I do really like the noise marines, all 4 of them… this box set seriosly suck! you get parts for making 4 noise marines and rest of em are regular CSM, its seriosly broken…
according to the codex, each noise marine may be equipped with a sonic blaster, but when you look into the box… Nope, one marine may be equipped with the sonic blaster, and there is like 3 noise marine head options, rest of them are regular CSM… seriosly GW make a new full plastic 10 man kit for the different marines…
tabletop, the noise marines are awsome against horde armys like nids or Orks… and i dont ever see people besides me playing the noise marines, but im telling, they do rock against horders…
Literally.
Of course they scream and make sounds during battle the name Noise marines must come from somewhere
In my opinion one of the worst cult troops kits. Why? Because you only get 2 of the Noise Weapons. It’s easier just to get the Sonic weapons upgrade bitz or convert them yourself. Though that Sword and Backpack are nice.
