Kings of War Week: Basilean Faction Breakdown
October 28, 2013 by warzan
Kicking things off the guys will be settling down to have a look at the Basilean Faction for Kings of War. I'd say that's a pretty good start to Kings of War Week right!? What is this faction all about and what sets them apart from your run of the mill religious zealot army?

Those are some good looking models. This faction looks really interesting.
I really like look of this faction. Besides they get bonus points from me for having big cats.
‘I tawt I taw a puddy tat, I DID, I did taw a puddy tat – wiv a frickin scary nun on top…’
With frickin’ lasers?
the sisterhood deffo look cool, i dunno, there’s something about scary battle nuns… mind you, living near a catholic school has probably had an influence on that haha – a nun viciously wielding a ruler vs a nun with a flail, they really aren’t that different…
I do like those minis, not sure about the colour scheme the studio ones are painted, but they do look good.
Nuns with flails ridding big female lions O_O! I want to know more about that “technology” part…
Angels are pretty neat. The fluff is a little to goodie, goodie for my taste.
oh nuns and their ultimate solutions
Heh I’m not sure about the idea of big cats as mounts but.. when you can field Angels (or angel-like) minis in an army I’m pretty much sold. The detail on them looks great and even the simpler “rank and file” troops like the Sisterhood look good too. I often think it would be nice if Mantic had a boxed set you could buy that consisted of one of each infantry figure from the “good” or “neutral” races for use as RPG characters 😀
But the current way generates so many more sales for them.
I love the look of the models. I like the faction ideal but I will have to see the Dwarves before i make any final decisions on which one I would run.
I don’t know, those lion riders and lion chariot look a bit awkward for me, but the paladins and angels are not bad. Not to mention the battle nuns. Go for it, nuns!
A nice lookng Army and a great sounding Backstory/Personality to it – Looking forward to hearing about the 2 Armies I am most likely to go for – Ogres and Undead!
I think if I get into this game, it would have to be these peeps. Back in the day I was a sucker for the Sisters of Battle in 40K, so the style of these are right up my street I think. But must admit even if I don’t get into the game might have to pick up some of the ur-elohi and the grand master on the loin special characters as they seem like fantastic centre piece models to paint.
Undead armies for the win!
this looks like a rely cool game system would be rely nice to win sum thing from it
Panther riders? Ok that’s fairly cool.
Reminds me of the humans in Might And Magic, always did love an angel warrior!
Just wish they had kept the game simple. All those magic items and additional special rules just made it stink of that big company GW.
Really? There’s barely two paragraphs of new rules and optional magic rules (maybe 300 words) and two and a half quite spaced out magic items. I’ll be honest it’s not exactly an onerous affair 😉
Looks nice.. really like their style.. 🙂
Great miniatures,to bad i never win….
Really love the look of this army. I’m going to take the plunge into KoW
These miniatures look awesome! I mean how can you say no to guys in armor riding lion?
Is there a one player set coming out for this army?
This game looks really good, cant wait to see more
The Basilean’s don’t sound like my cup of tea.I think something in green with a sharp pointy thing hidden behind its back sounds much better!
Big cats and angels look awesome 🙂
I was always more of an evil army lover, but one of my friends would definitely pick the Basilean up in a second.
The models for this faction are very nice.
Not the army for me. A bit too up themselves i think.
love the models and the baackground sounds pretty cool from the quick account but there’s not enough shades of grey for me… maybe as allies just so i get guys on lions and angels?
An army entirely of angels does sound very attractive.
Glad I get in on the kickstarter – to be honest I probably wouldn’t have picked these guys/girls/angels up – and that would have been a shame.
I love the angels. They really help to solidify the faction in the fantastic universe of Kings of War.
What an awesome theme for a human army. I love all the different cats tied into this and those Elohi look awesome.
Still wanna see the other factions but I can see me picking some of these up just to paint and then probably going for a full army.
I love the angels! I might just pick some of those up to paint!
Looks sweet.
Except for the panther cavalry, the rest of the model range is pretty awesome!
This is such a unique army idea, and the mini’s are great. Would love to see a battle report with these guys and gals.
They sound like a cool army
the Basilean Faction for Kings of War looks Awesome!
…and this is the army that makes you have faith!
Gives me an excuse to be a goody-two-shoes… as long as I can have my Flail of Smiting to go with them!
Wile the army lists say good vs. evil, I always interpreted is as order vs. chaos
The difference is that, while order (like the Basileans) represents life and stability it also represents stagnation and oppression, and the Basileans outlook represents that nicely.
What that interpetation means is that the world is still quite broken and that there are no factions, that are good or evil as a whole, since the two sides both go the the extreme of the spectrum
Maybe I’m too old, but the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear someone or something described as “good” is: “By whose definition?”
Still, it’s nice to see something besides the usual grimdark spiky bits.
Am longing the whole Panther lancers and lions units 🙂
I really like the look of the Paladins and the Angels. This Faction reminds me alot like the Heroes of Might and Magic Castle faction, but I would guess plays quite differently due to them having great low level shooting. Actually, if I got my hands on a Basilean army, my first conversion would be to make up some Crossbow footmen.
Those some of their best looking minis. I’m almost tempted to start an army of religious zealots 😀
I do like that there’s a Lawful Good faction. While being Lawful makes them a little joyless, it’s so much more interesting than the “everyone’s a dick” fluff that a few games have gone for.
If I do get round to KoW, it’ll be the standard Kingdom of Men list (and historical minis) for me but it’s good to know there are some genuine good guys.
Thats my favourit Faction so long… love the Angels, an there are some sweet paintjobs, this will be my Faction to go with.
Nice work on the miniatures… I need to check out the gameplay!
Flipping goodie-two-shoes! Wheres the Abyssals! Show me the Evil!
For me these guys are what made me take notice of the setting and actually see it begin to be properly defined. The Angel Devil concept so obvious but its not really been pursued in a non eastern style setting that ive seen in a wargame, at least not recently and to me this identity is vitally important.
Very interesting lot.
Don’t like the Men at arms, the arms look weirdly proportioned. I like that they’re whiter than white after the murky greyness of the ‘other’ bunches humans. The paladins arms look a bit odd too looking at them closely. Love the angel chaps though.
The paladins are very nice but I am afraid I can’t really reccomend the Men-at-arms they are less than stellar unpainted as well.
loving this mantic stuff im a big fan of these
I want it! Hello? Here, the waving arm! Hey!
Not sure about the arms on them nuns
Got some of these with my kickstarter so my use these allies with my humans (Bretonnians, sorry GW your rules are too complex)
I love the look of these guys! I will definitely be starting an army of men once my wallet fills back up.
The Basileans would be my army of choice for Kings of War. Not only are the models interesting but I like the background to this army.
these are really good sculpts are they plastic
Conversion number one. Take one of the sisters with flail. Replace flail with ruler and tremble in fear 🙂
OMG yes you are totally speaking my fears!
I love the Basileans.
I really enjoy the look of this race, but I mean come on? They have frikin ANGELS!
Interesting ideas and beautiful models. I’m curious how it plays.
Cool models, i especially like the sisters on panthers.
An army of paladins lead by angels? Not my kinda thing but nice looking Models.
Ugh, WAY too goody goody! *shudders*
I bought several extras from the kickstarter. Already using the paladins as undead revnant. I am using the goul heads for them. Yea it is good. All the models have been good to excellent. The angels rock.
Not sure I like the lions in this army, but everything else I’m seeing looks wonderful.
Such a great faction, I’m glad Mantic waited till they had something interesting to show with humans
Ordered a bunch of Basilean goodness on the Kickstarter. My daughter grabbed this army from me and is working on painting it up. 🙂
Angelic hordes come forth!!
Painting angels probably could be challenging. However, I still would prefer dwarven faction over Basilean.
This is my favorite army, I am now concidering jumping into this game… the army packs look like a good start… or maybe the prize…. would love to paint up these paladins and angelic heroes…. just amazing scuplts… the Panther cavalry looks epic… The hero riding a lion is also amazing…
I really like the look of this faction.
Just ordered the big army deal because of this video
Entry 4! Yeah I’m gonna continue on the trend of saying this has to be my favourite army of yours, a massive well done and I look forward to seeing what awesome stuff you come out with in the future!
I actually like the color choice!!
Definitely my favourite army for kings of war.
Good name for a Kings of War faction, considering “basileus” means “king” in Greek (without entering into too much detail about the origins of the word).
Looks like an interesting game, some nice models.
I am on the fence with this faction. Still darn cool though!
Sign me up for an army!
So much lore!
I love Paladins! My first AD&D character was a Paladin. It would be very interesting to see how to play an army such as this. KoW is definitely looking to be my choice for a fantasy army game.
I just faced these guys with my undead and had my rear handed to me. those paladin cavalry are hard as nails. if you find yourself facing them, try your best to crush them before they reach you…they don’t mess around.
I really like the angel figures. Flaming wings = Coolness
riding lions cool
Amazing looking army, really reminds me of white from mtg…
Now, this is a holy army I want to play. Angels, nuns and lions, oh my…..
Wouldn’t be a coincidence your favourite Warmachine faction being menoith…I think you just like burning people 😉
Baselians look great
Theres some shiney models there. I like the idea of having angry angels in my army.
The Basilean range fills a great niche. There are some problems with it, but I’ve been intending to pick some up once the “to paint” pile dies down a bit. Especially those Elohi and Paladins!
Incredible paladin knights.
Nice angels
wife will want to paint those angels
This army I really like. The models look great, they really don’t have a GW counterpart, and it is nice to see a good crusade army for once. They don’t have all the toys that other armies have, but that gives you a good reason to use the ally rules. If I got into KoW, this would be the first army I’d look at buying mantic figures for.
This army looks really appealing to me visually. Surprising since when i first heard of Mantic, I really didn’t care for their models.
we need a king model with someone behind him banging 2 coconuts together
The Basileans might be the army to choose if you won the grand prize, the whole good vs evil thing. Could see some heated battles going on; maybe even some before the game seeing who plays what faction.
Love the cat riders and angels. Still like the Elves the most I think, but may have to ally a few Basileans.
Great looking figures! An army with Angels on your side, how could you lose?
I like how there is no ambiguity with these guys they are good they are righteous and they good gods say so lol
Ah, the Basileans….
My first group of angels were turned into terrain – they had the bad luck to show up when I was making a graveyard themed battlefield for a Hallowe’en game. They make great monuments. 🙂 (I stole an idea from Violet Death by Tinracer, here on BoW.)
I need to order more of the angels – they are also very good looking models.
Right now I am cannibalizing all the loverly Basileans from the Kickstarter, they are being used in all sorts of other games (the Sisters are seeing play in Mordheim, the lion mounted Paladin and Sisters in Pathfinder, the (sadly dodgy) Men at Arms are Korvosa City Watch for Pathfinder… but I do intend to create a crusading army.
Which means that I really need to get the Basilean Legacy.
The Auld Grump
I wasn’t sure at first I’d like the Basilean, but the elohi and the sisters on the panthers are really cool.
Yep, sold.
