Jervis Johnson Talks Unbound Armies For Warhammer 40,000

Jervis Johnson has been sat down over at Games Workshop to talk about the changes that are coming in Warhammer 40,000 7th Edition. He kicks things off by talking about the different types of armies you can take to the battlefield. See the video above...
It's not much more than we'd heard before but additional to the list making they have included the formations choices which is something we suspected. Interestingly I'm just excited and interested that Jervis Johnson is still beavering away behind the scenes on these rules.
I know a lot of people are very disenchanted with Warhammer 40,000 but I think this could be a very good edition. We shall have to wait and see, but look out for more videos throughout the week from Jervis.

7th verse, same as the first. The only thing that makes it different is that they say it’s different.
So, same formation rules as Dust Tactics and allowing you to unbound your forces officially, that players did unofficially anyway 🙂
I found that refreshing, a GW video which actually had some content. Hopefully the early signs of a change in attitude.
Jervis has always been the acceptable face of the design team. Aside from his column in WD, he did some interesting podcast interviews a few years back. His one with Jes Goodwin is well worth a listen.
Looking at 1:16 in the vid it looks like there could be different types of detatchments with different themes, each giving different bonuses. The one at that time is called “Combined Arms” and is the current force org chart, wouldn’t be difficult to add a tank army option with more heavy support slots but less elites/fasts and different “Command Benefits”.
Hi folks. I am old and my hearing is not that good. But did Jervis say, at 0.36-0.39 ‘..they can choose what to ‘abuse’ and play with..'(lol.) I only mention this because the natural way to say it would be ‘choose what to play with’.or ‘..choose what to use..’.(When you play with some thing you are automatically assumed to be using it. ) And as far as my gaming group and I were concerned the F.O.C in the 40k rule book was a guide line for random pick up games.And NEVER EVER considered ‘mandatory’. Tbh, have been a little sceptical but it hasn’t blunted my interest – shame, if we could get some more material I may be able to have a good think about these changes, as for the time being while they deffo sound exciting in the end it’s a question of execution… Bound armies, formations probably should receive damn good boosts but in the end it’s a question of balance ironically… Apocalypse with an unbound formation perhaps, you have all your other blocks but a ‘what the hell’ formation that you could sling all sorts into would only make official practices… Read more »
Be interesting to see if anyone fields a Helldrake swarm with their unbound CSM army and not get anything (words or physical objects) thrown at them. On a more serious note, I welcome these changes. The rules have always been guidlines to help players get the best out of each game. GW are doing the right thing here by encouraging more creativity in players games, they aren’t giving permission to play outside of the standard FOC, just ideas on different ways to play and thus inject (hopefully!) new approaches and thinking into a game that is lacking in fresh innovation.… Read more »
The FoC is an important way of playing a balanced game, it was indeed mandatory if you actually wanted a fair, balanced game. It forced you to think about your army list and added a lot of depth to the game, in the name of a balanced game. Of course you could agree to ignore it but to do so in games of less than 2000 was to willfully unbalance the game, which requires agreement and understanding. lol – Well we the public are Franco/Kim and GW are Seth/Kanye giving it to us over the motorbike.
