It's now time to get our delve on with Dungeon Saga this weekend. Warren and Justin are taking on the roles of the Human Barbarian and Dwarf Fighter while Rich from Mantic controls the undead legions as the evil Overlord.
Will our two heroes storm the dungeon and win honour and renown or will they fall at the first hurdle and be forced to retreat to the local tavern?

Seems like a nice update to Warhammer Quest – Mantic are doing a good business for themselves remaking the specialist games Games workshop are abandoning.
There were dungeon crawlers around before Warhammer Quest. 😉
Warhammer quest was itself an update to heroquest, which is what dungeon saga is actually (quite openly) paying homage to. And heroquest was not a GW game. It was made under license by MB.

Warren does have children and speaking from personal experience,they do have a wonderful way of reminding you how to revive your forgotten imagination!
Many at my local club have taken to the opposed dice rolls mechanic from Spartacus and in a similar way, adapted it to suit other skirmish battle melee resolution.

There was an AI deck mentioned during the kickstarter, so everyone could play as adventurers. I don’t know if they’ve managed to get it working yet.

Doh just read about the adventurers companion which has solo rules, very excited now as this appears to be the game I have been waiting for, so I can to get my two young sons into the hobby, already bought them the dungeon an dragons TV series on dvd. I may even start painting again.
Talk about setting the atmosphere. This is great, and I cannot wait for this game to be released.

Really nice demo game to get you into the game. I really like it that they made it really easy so start-up your first adventure.
A really nice video (with cool sound effects) that introduces the gameplay in a anyone will understand fashion. Plus I like the way in which Warren sets the mood.

I was laughing almost from beginning to end of this video. Dungeon crawler board games can be quite dull to play if people don’t understand HOW to play them. They are all about storytelling and putting yourself into the story, loincloth or not.

I think Saga looks a very pleasing product – decent models and decent game. An advanced Heroquest in Manticaland so great for those invested in KoW.BUT in its normal play mode it pales in comparison to the awesome Decent second edition by FFG…
Even if descent is a “better” dungeon crawler, which it may well be (I’ve never played it so can’t comment), dungeon saga would probably still be the game I’d go for, because it has something descent doesn’t: nostalgia.
Descent has its own aesthetic. Let’s face it, dungeon saga is meant to look and feel like heroquest. What I would want from the gameplay here would be to replicate the feel of heroquest, but bringing it into the 21st century. From what I’ve seen so far, seems to be doing that.
High points for me…
1) Dwarf strolls in and obliterates the Skeleton the Barbarian couldn’t handle… Barbarian Huffs.
2) Barbarian Obliterates Skeletons with his Special Move… Barbarian gets Cocky
3) Dwarf casually smashes a Rising Skeleton
4) Barbarian runs towards door screaming incoherently “Leeeeeroy Jeeenk-murmer”
the part I could do without….

I have to say this game captures all the old school Hero-Quest like feel and then some. I think Mantic have hit on another winner with this game. They are one of the ones to watch in this industry in my opinion. Hope to see the game out in AU sometime soon 🙂

Now that was brilliant, the way that door splintered like old damp ash instead of the heavy studded oak. The barbarian roared in triumph or was it a splinter that had entered the area where his fur loin cloth had just protected a moment before.
Justin, you’ll need to pick it up a bit if you want that best supporting role nomination, c’mon mate you can’t let the Barbarian out shine you when it counts.
We now have two games we need, waiting in for the Frostgrave rules today, and we will be playing dungeon saga at some point as well.

First corridor cleared 🙂 …or is it? I wonder what will happen to the two skeletons that remained once the door had been forced open, will they perhaps make a reappearance in the next room? Would be nice if they included a search ability to find upgrades to armour weapons etc, perhaps in a later expansion once they get to a certain level?
Brilliantly played out. Warren needs to be locked in a cell and made to play games on video for our amusement on a permanent basis.

Brilliant, made my morning today guys, loved the getting into character and the game looks to be lots of fun takes me right back to my younger days as my first minis game was the classic dungeon delver which was a natural progression from the d&d which I played alot of…looking forward to watching the next vid later on today

Good question if a door gets a out numbered modifier but I can imagine it does not since it’s not defending itself. Interested in what the FAQs says

This is certainly a good intro dungeon crawl. I can only imagine that it gets better!
Playing these at the same time would be pretty cool.
Warren may have added the dramatic storytelling flair, Justin had the best line in the narrative. (Bit of comic relief was needed after the violence and Warren’s nakedness)

Really enjoyed watching! We had quite a laugh watching the Barbarian rushing forward with all jiggly bits moving! If I recall the last time we watched Warren play he left Lloyd in the dust as well. This looks like such a fun game!

At first I thought, nah, don´t need more 28mm miniatures since I begun to concentrate on 6mm. But then it struck me, this may be the thing to get my children into dads nerdy stuff!

The combat mechanics work really well. This makes each combat an opportunity to prevail or fail. So fun.
There was a certain irony in having Warren claiming you should trust your fellow adventurers.
As he charged for the door, he did not dissapoint.

Can’t wait to see where this game will go, and how it will tie into Kings of War. I remember fondly the times playing Warhammer Quest, using all the army miniatures we had laying around.
As an American, that Hillary Clinton comment was really funny. This game looks tons of fun…also the thought of Warren ripping off a loin cloth makes me shutter lol. Great game. Looks tons of fun, and I love the flavor they are adding with the RP.
A unit can only move diagonally if it could move to one of its adjacent squares. What about when the adjacent square is in the front arc of an enemy. (Example when the dwarf moves to protect orlafs backside – it essentially jumps over a front arc square to move diagonally)
I believe this was discussed on the rules questions on quirkworthy.com with jake, but was wondering if there is clear description in any FAQ/rules write up.

Look good if a bit basic. Simple combat mechanics, although the whole tactical positioning bit seems a bit fiddly… very similar to Descent 2nd Ed.
The barbarian rips his loin-cloth off. Sounds like a standard adventure to me.
I do enjoy Mantic’s games. I’ll have to seek this one out.
Warren’s melodramatic narration and in-character speech is funny as hell. Justin’s cynical attitude is a perfect foil for Warren’s extroverted ham acting too.
I liked everything up until they started rolling dice. The comparative results combat system in this game is over-complicated and cumbersome. I’ll take Heroquest over this any day.

So far I think my favourite mini is the Skellies with the scythes. It’s a direct pinch from a certain other game from my childhood and I love it.
I like the mechanics. They seem fairly simple, at least in the first couple of adventures. Things sure get more complicated once the full rules kick in. The one thing I’m unsure of is how well things level up. Adding more dice gives more chances to beat the opposing dice, but adding more armour can REALLY make it difficult to over come a creature. And requiring more successes, REALLY makes having more dice to roll very important. I really want to see what the “boss” creatures play like.
Looks good so far and it’s nice to see another Heroquest adaptation released with the same feel to it.

This is a great vid. I LOVE how Warren is all about the RolePlaying and trying to get Justin to fall into the real ‘dungeon crawl’ and not so much the rules. It is almost like the rules are JUST a vehicle for Warren. LOVE IT!

Great game! Simple rules, easy to get into. I like the Overlord role trying to defeat the party rather than the traditional GM who’s more neutral.

Grrr Just saw that they added Solo and co-op play with the Adventures companion wish I had known that when the kickstarter was going on would have been all in on this as I saw the kickstarter saw it was PvP and skipped as that just doesn’t work for me 🙁
Well the game mechanics changed a bit comparing the old demo. But it looks awesome!

I’m glad the adventurers now don’t get penalties til nearly dead. It was really easy to cripple them in the alpha rules.
It’ll be interested to see how the advanced version plays!
