It’s the Week4nd!
..and what’s this new fangled idea of a video called a ‘Weekender’ with various people sat around blowing the breeze about gaming? It’ll never catch on!
Hang on – I vaguely remember you trying this before… before live cast hobby nights and weekends spent event blogging.
I reserve judgment…
Three very nice KS, very different games with different price points… DAMN YOU!
He, he… Very nice.
As for those collapsible trolleys, ASDA are out of stock; I wonder why?
@warzan, just how many did you buy?
Lol we got two mate 🙂
Happy Weekend!!
TGIWeekender
got my covfefe, weekender is on and footsore Picts and Scots in front of me to clean up.
Kinda gutted that I didn’t win the Hobby Night Live long hall, but not as gutted as whoever put up the wrong picture will be once @warzan gets you. tut tut lads that was a set of walls not a long hall ^^
@lancorz Can you pop the right pic in the show notes? 🙂
On the way to southern France for a week of blazing sun, exhausting hiking and freezing drinks. Going to be fantastic. And I wish everyone a great time like that!
Now, the heck are Astral Knights? I only know Astral Claws. XD
Ah, a new Weekender. Somethign to watch whilst I build some more Wolves & Grey Knights 🙂
big fan of the mentor legion legion which in the fluff were a chapter that was used to test new equipment before it was rolled out across the other chapters. But if I was going to resurrect I would’ve started with the Crimson Fists, I know they haven’t been completely wiped out but the Orks didn’t leave many alive and considering the time it takes to grow them means they’re a long way from a chapter these days.
Have to agree wholeheartedly with @avernos as my very first army for my return to wargaming in 5th ed 40k was a Crimson Fist force. Inspiration was from the Rogue Trader BRB front cover and the whole Rynns World disaster fluff. Getting back into 8th ed will see their ranks boosted by a ( light ) smattering of Primaris ( who am i kidding, that Repulsor Tank and the Redemptor Dread have my name stamped on them 😀 ).
Yup C.F. would have been cool, but equally they ‘have been done’ recently with the whole Black Reach box set, and I wanted something a little more obscure where we had more gaps to game in 🙂
The crash test chapter sounds amazing though lol
squad of Mentors with a targeting web, ’twas a thing of beauty 😉
I agree with the choice of the Astral Knights completely. The sacrifice made to stop the World Engine was massive and BoW bringing them back to game in the gaps is a superb choice 😀 .
Just one thing though *puts SM nerd hat on*, Black Reach was an action fought by the dashing poster boys of the Imperium, the smurfs.
Sorry I meant the other box set that had the C.F. in it 🙂
Ok am I suffering from the ‘Mandela Effect’ here! There was a starter set that had Crimson Fists in it right????
I love my Black Templars and I am not going to change. But the Astral Knights look good and they come from the same parent chapter so thumbs up.
I will have to look more into them they sound good.
Not so much @warzan . Unless you are thinking of the classic RB01 “Beakies” and the Crimson Fist’s position since Rogue Trader as the “other” poster boys for the Astartes after Ultramarines….
(Ironically though I am using Dark Imperium as an excuse to get my old part-built Crimson Fists built & painted so they can be reinforced by the Primaris Marines….)
I think the Crimson Fists were the chapter you had in the Rogue Trader book in that infamous mission featuring space marines vs the orks at the farm.
I think it’s them on the cover too …
That’s right @limburger and @dawfydd 😀 . The CF were on the front cover of Rogue Trader and got that battle against the hated foe as well. This has brought back a lot of happy memories for me and i will be setting up a table at my next club meet to play The Battle at the farm, to bring it back to life for my first couple of games of 8th ed.
If I remember correctly with the Crimson fists , during the ork attack one of their planetary defence missiles malfunctioned and hit their fortress atomising it and leaving them with 16 marines.
Yup. Kantor gathered up any survivors during the planetary siege and most fluff says they were well under half strength by the end of the Ork Waaaaagh.
If someone’s going to lug that shopping trolley round a crowded convention hall, they should have to buy another ticket.
A shopping trolley!!!!! Now why didn’t I think of that – that’s an even better idea! Lol
With regards to the chapter icon for the astral knights chapeter (awesome project will be following with interest – have you guys thought about Brass Etch? I’ve seen that there are a few people out there (on the internet) that have been able to create chapter icons (I’ve used a few on my own dark angels) and as they allow you to apply the icons to the models during the construction stages it makes life easier for the painters as it just adds another layer of detail to the finished models.
As BoW has such a wide ranging community perhaps someone on here can help you in this quest? (Liking the whole Bretonians in Space vibe!)
Any one out there with brass etch skills???
Come forward lol 🙂
Great idea
Oh and great show guys, @warzan saying his goodbyes to the “old” marines was brilliant.
I really am the most promiscuous man in gaming 😉 lol
How many beer crates fit in that truck?
Ok well have to test that on a hobby night live 🙂
ya its the weekend
Ah time for the double entendre show 😀 Many congrats to all the prize winners.
Ben’s face during the trolley smutfest was a picture. Related: never play poker against Ben.
Weirdly I’m usually quite good with hidden information…or roles…I love being the traitor in board games haha. Just seems to be the smutty jokes I can’t stop laughing at…eventually.
It’s rumored that the primaris hosts are able to unleash a treble entendre 🙂
I have to honest, I think things like that trolley should be banned from convention halls. It’s bad enough getting hit in the ankles by people with buggy’s and suitcases. without adding this trip hazard to the mix
my first thought @avien mate, 16’000 people with a trolley.
Morning All. The Weekender is back at last YAHHHH!!!!.
When my 8th Edition box set arrives I am torn on what to do with the Primaris Marines.
They are gonna be the First– no doubt on that. The indecision is on how to paint them.
Do I do them all black with a red trim? go classic with the paint scheme that made me fall in love with Dark Angels way back in 1st edition. Or To do aged yellowing ivory under armour with black-green armour over. Or to do gloss black or black graphite under armour with black-green armour over. Any advice or suggestions would be welcome if anyone cares to give an opinion on how I should go. My other Dark Angels ( well all my space marines actually) are pretty much Games work shop painting guide for them. But I want these Primaris to stand out.
go for the classic black, have you got a pic of the old style heraldry for the shoulder pads and the like? If not I have the old marine painting guide I can scan and pm you
I still have my 1st edition rule book, and all the compendiums, companions, and collections from White Dwarf. If that covers the design I am good; if not I would much appreciate that scan. Thanks.
I’ve started a thread called Codex: Astral Claws, Research and Development, for people wanting to chuck in ideas on symbols, paint schemes, decals and the like that the Beasts may want to check out before chucking paint down on the new shiny plastic marines.
Thanks avernos very much appreciated!
Just wanted to give a shout out to Ben, never realised he didn’t have a video view of the studio! He’s been blagging it well 😀
really like the look of the gnome wizard. be great for roleplaying as well
That has the potential to become a classic sculpt.
agreed. an amazing character beautifully executed, top sculpt.
Another great show guys.
About your biker gangs, WARLORD’s PROJECT Z have some excellent 28mm plastic biker gangs, male and female characters with and without bikes and a whole bunch of weapons.
Oh Yeah!!!! We have to check those out 🙂
Sooooo… when does the Jes Goodwin: Designer’s Studio interview air?
And would I like to see Pandemic: Legacy? Heck, I’d hop on a plane and come and play it again. It is that good.
If your serious about that, let us know and a seat at the table is yours for the series 🙂
If I can make the logistics work then I’d love to do it 🙂
Very much on to make this a thing! Az
Weekender Time! 🙂 As I always say! Time to paint a bit while listening!
Up on the painting table atm: Iron Warriors Kill Team for Shadow Wars! 🙂
After seeing the interview on your coverage of the Expo I backed Escape The Dark Castle immediately… Ben, maybe we can have a game when I next attend a Boot Camp as well as some Saga 🙂
Would certainly be up for that. Can’t wait till I get my copy with some of the stretch goal stuff they’ve announced!
Amazing show. Thank you 🙂
In the devir games dragons & chickens prize winners you said beef08. I checked thinking there is another person out there with the same impeccable taste in usernames but didn’t find another cool guy. Did you mean me?
*sqeee* … yeah, you lot show too many good kickstarters.
I know it’s still my decision though, so it’s all good. 🙂
It’s seriously impossible to keep up let alone choose between all the amazing Kickstarters that are just firing out these past months! Az
Mp3 download not working
@lancorz @warzan @lloyd @dignity
There’s too many http’s at the start of the address. Just delete them so the url starts with http://www.beastsofwar.com and it should work
@dignity next time you pull Warren around find a hill and let go.
I`m surprised @dignity did`t…………………accidentally trip up and redirect the wheels of the “Warren Cart” towards the river bank, as it was down hill. 😉
It might be time to find out if the asda cart is amphibious 🙂
Happy weekender guys.
Curse you Ben. Just backed Escape The Dark Castle now 🙂 So many shinies !
Woot – join me in the awesome old school fantasy world 😉
Wait, new person..?
I’m confused and frightened.
I’m also doing an all new or resurrected space marine chapter with my Primaris stuff, rather than add them to my existing chapter. Waiting for inspiration to strike.
Is there a list out there of all the destroyed chapters?
I promise that I’m nice….. 😛 did ramble some so I’ll accept the confusion for sure >.< Az
Give this a go @tachycardia, it may be helpful.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Loyal_Space_Marine_Chapters_(List)
Thanks very much for the mention, @warzan . 😀 50th Anniversary of the Six-Day War was a milestone we didn’t want to let slip by, given how much its ramifications still shape the Middle East, and thus the world, to this day.
I was half expecting that closing scene to end up in the river Carry On style . . .
@warzan I know these won’t fit the new marines in the starter box but when they release individual boxes of them you’ll be able to give them different shoulder pads to them and I’ve found these which i think you’ll like
https://www.shapeways.com/product/AW7WRGGEC/astral-knights-standard-shoulder-x10?optionId=57881833
@warzan I have a ready made narrative for your Astral Knights. For a long time the Hammers of Titan, an Iron Hands successor chapter, have been trying to destroy the Necron tomb world of Viridia, homeworld of the dynasty of the Kem-haq. How about the Astral Knights turn up to break the stalemate and destroy the Kem-haq for once and all?
Happy weekend! Finally some time to spend at the hobby 😀
The Astral knights never left us…
If you want some ideas warren
http://astralknights.blogspot.co.uk
3.34 “goes into the arse of it” I do love technical talk 🙂
Congratulations on the Salute winner. I’m quite envious!
Great show. As a warning Justin I’ll be at expo next year too…
I was looking at the Mastodon over on Forge World, and it seems really big. But it’s kind of hard to get a good sense of scale with just all those short marines standing around it. 😉 :p
Awesome backstory for the refounding of the Astral Knights.
That Chapter Master Librarian being given the chance to
avenge his entire heroically sacrificed Chapter… and as a
Dreadnought should be a novel by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.
And GW should ask you guys to write the Codex!
Great to see you back guys. Another brilliant show
Why they called them Eldritch Essences and not Mankee Candles is utterly beyond me.
I like the idea for your chapter. I have an idea that I have found suprisingly amazing and I think it would fit wonderfully for them.
Paint it them in a chainmail, do the highlights in silver or the chrome as you plan, then take the Army Painter Dark Tone and Blue tones and mix them about 50/50 and wash them with it. I tried this once for another one of my projects and I was amazed how well it worked. May and to thin it down a bit for your guys marines, but should work really well.
missed you guys.
I found myself nodding in agreement with much that was said today.
escape the dark castle does look good Ben and i’m digging the retro art style. I think Justin is spot on with the potential of the game and others like it. story telling card and board games in general have so much to offer given the high game turn over that we have in the industry.
Az is bang on about the kings of the genre. kingdom death monster, so good it’s tough to classify, and gloomhaven ,while being a more traditional dungeon crawler, has that fantastic legacy feature. I might have potentially thrown mansion of madness in the mix as well, again not your classic dungeon crawl but Cthulhu never was your standard RPG.
with Arkham horrors LCG leading the way with narrative card games i’m excited for the future.
i’m with Dawn, I love a bit of solo play. it’s like being a kid again lost in my own imagination playing with my kenner action figures. sometimes I just fancy playing something away from one of my organised game nights just cos.
on the subject of story telling and the best part of the UK games expo. you hope when you go to things like this that you’ll discover something new and unlocked for that blows you away.
the RPG Shadows of Esteren. the beautiful, emotional , romantic, evocative ,atmospheric and terrifying medieval Celtic horror RPG did just that.
it caught my eye along with a few others but once I got home and did my research the full extent of what Shadows of Esteren was hit me like a train. this is now officially my favourite thing in all RPG.
there is to much to go into but this group of French writers , artists and musicians have crafted something special here in my opinion. gutted I missed the concert they did at the expo, next time i’m there.
Shadows of Esteren and KD;M share Berserk the manga’s dark fantasy as an inspiration and you can also clearly see the Cthulhu vibe.
thought Ben would be all over this one, I know Dawns eyes were twinkling when she did the interview. only available at conventions and kickstarter at present, if i’d known at the time i’d of thrown money at them. i’m now left waiting for the backer kit to open to jump on as a late backer. sooooooooooooo happy I found this.
Happy Saturday and welcome back guys!
Wow, if Papa smurf dozes off, I’d see if that trolley would float and watch him sail out to sea.
oh yeah 8th edition.
like the very image of the imperium its self was slow to change to the multiple threats that beset her. like wise they have evolved in tandem to face those threats.
too much to say here about the mechanics but overall fantastic job on bringing 40k up to speed. what they have done with the wounding system is worth special mention, great job. just don’t let invulnerable saves go past 3+ and you have ironed out all the issues with how damage is resolved in one fell swoop.
would of liked to have seen them go alternate activation given how dynamic the changes have been in other areas and while I understand why they have gone with a random element with charging, i’m not a fan of it. other than that though, jobs a good un.
the new marines are the pick of the bunch and they look real nice, so good to see the improvements in posture and anatomy. a lot more dynamism in them which gives them a more organic feel and they have never looked so menacing. in fact they look better than forge worlds heresy stuff, interesting one that.
I’m a fan of the old realms of chaos, rogue trader and fantasy role play art and while some of the art captures that style some of it was a little too cartoony. the art its self was good, it was just not as inline with the setting as i’d like.
will it get me back into 40k ? well, no. but it will for a lot of people. along with D&D, which has its self only just responded to the changes in the industry, it’s the gateway to a larger world and i’m happy that they’re doing a good job show casing what table top has to offer in an excess able way.
infinity is my miniature wargame and along with KD:M and the odd sculpt I like here and there it just won’t get near my paint table.
I have two game nights, one for infinity and one group night for RPGs and story telling board games. room for solo narrative card games in my life. but until I can convince my brother to throw down a competitive card game after our infinity game and the odd weekend where we get together for a 4x board game that’s me all in.
the other reason is I take my time in backing games but then go all in when I do. one of the great strengths of 40k is its huge cannon. i’m a big STAR WARS fan and play the RPG and the accompanying cannon is equally huge. along with the odd classic manga , graphic novel i’m again at my limit.
Star Trek RPG is looking good. along with ascendancy Star Trek is looking ever more tempting
When you paint your Astral Knights I hope you do a tutorial video on it. I want to do a metallic paint scheme for my primaries marines.
I’m sure we’ll do something like that for this project – maybe a Live Blog style affair or part of Hobby Night Live!
@warzan, Badger paints makes Stynylrez primer in metallic silver. In the UK, I believe that it is branded as Ultimate Primer by Ultimate Model Products. Stynylrez is a terrible name, but it is short for Polystyrene Vinyl Resin. It is a self leveling primer designed for airbrush. When you were talking about painting a metallic Space Marine chapter, the new metallic primer came to mind. Flory Models did a great review of it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llD_DjsiLx0
Can you please make a throne and dais for the tv with Ben’s face. He can be looking down on all of you judgingly, kind of like he does now, but from a seat of power. Epic chapter idea, the 17th can’t get here soon enough so I can start building my own set.
I am very much onboard for the big throne…I like that idea.
+1 for the “Ben-Bot” or you could call him “Metal Ben” you could upload his conscious into it and he could live forever as part of BoW team…..
Fantastic show guys, great to have everyone back, can’t wait to see the new Primaris marines come to life.
Mad Robot do some cool motorbike miniature stuff –
https://madrobotminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=32_34&products_id=212
That’s awesome that the old heads fit the new Primaris miniatures – that was my biggest worry about the new sets 🙂
Only Warren could take something as simple as opening up a portable cart and turn it into something so sordid and perverse.
Kudos to the cart designers though – if it passed the Warzan load stress test and is still intact, it really is a quality bit of gear. Although not sure I can say the same about Justin’s back – after hauling that load he may well be spending the next several weeks at the physio.
I just noticed the Halloween Jack t-shirt that Justin was wearing. Viva SLA Industries!
great show cant what to see some of the new marines painted up.
Great show, congratulations winners! 😀
Thanks for doing the size comparison side-by-side with the new Marines, I’ve had mixed feelings about those since they were rumoured. Though they look quite good, and you say there’s fluff that allows regular marines to be upgraded?!? Hmmm…
I really enjoyed this weekender. I rarely watch them twice, but most likely will watch this one again. The length, content, and pace were all extremely engaging for me. It’s the best weekender I’ve watch in a while! The others aren’t bad, and maybe I didn’t phrase that properly, but this one is just really, really, really good, like a cut above the rest! 🙂
I agree – this Weekender was excellent – I watched the Astral Knights section twice.
It is always great to see creative people discuss, develop and improve an idea.
Oh boy 🙂
Never have so many innuendos been used to describe a shopping trolley!
Found this excellent pic of the chapter colours.
@warzan
if you want custom sculpted shoulder pads for your new space marine chapter try http://www.chaptercustomizer.com they can 3d print them for you, also decals and vehicle doors.
Its an offshoot of fallout hobbies. I struggled to find it using google chrome but found it ok with internet explorer.
Well worth a look.
Rob
Always liked the Soul Drinkers as a chapter
Me too. So much so i butchered a few BA shoulder pads with a chalice on and built some SD Deathwatch marines. I feel they were hard done by, the didn’t ALL turn to chaos….
After spending the last however many weeks wrapped up in elections, it’s been good to get back to Beasts of War – and the Weekender!
@warzan If the Primaris Astral Knights are that knightly you could have the ‘old’ Space Marines standing vigil over their fortress to become their retainers. That way you can believably mix both chapters and fit it in the story.
Thank you so much for my prizes…. I will treasure my Hobby God bag and can’t wait to get the Viking fort setup up
@dignity @warzan @brennon thank you all for the amazing comments on my ship build… really appreciated:D
Fantastic episode! Really wanna do Primaris Astral Knights! But I must resist!
